If you're doing your first visit to Red Orchids China Bistro in Charleston, SC correctly, you'll walk in a guest and leave as a friend. Owners Kelly and Tony Chu, two-first generation Chinese Americans, fell in love sharing a single dream of opening a restaurant.  They opened Red Orchids in 2003, taking on family style Chinese-American cuisine in a city with a decidedly Southern palate. The restaurant has been voted Best Chinese Restaurant in Charleston City Paper's Best of Charleston for 19 years straight, and they're also the owners of Cirsea Craft Ice Cream, a premium by-the-pint ice cream company, which began when Kelly wanted to offer Charleston something more interesting than a fortune cookie for dessert. They are committed to the power of hard work and perseverance as much as they are committed to having fun together, and they're often a presence at special culinary events in the Lowcountry.

The restaurant review has long been part of The Post and Courier's food section, but the coronavirus pandemic led us — along with newspapers nationwide — to temporarily suspend that section of the paper.Recently, in March, The Post and Courier brought back its restaurant reviews. Moving forward, readers can expect to find a review inside the Food & Dining section twice a month. This week, we peek behind the curtain with help from The Post and Courier's new contributing critic, Robert Moss. He shared how he approaches a review, what stood out to him the most from the first two restaurants he reviewed and why he thinks this isn't the time for assigning star ratings to new restaurants.Moss is the Contributing Barbecue Editor for Southern Living and the author of five books on food and beverage history. His most recent, "The Lost Southern Chefs," was published in February by University of Georgia Press. Moss has contributed to several South Carolina publications including the Charleston City Paper, where he wrote restaurant reviews for years. More coverage:Review: Brasserie la Banque shines brightest with bold twists on classic brasserie fareReview: Laurel reflects the shift in our new generation of neighborhood bistrosThis episode was hosted by Parker Milner and edited and produced by Emily Williams.Understand SC is a weekly podcast from The Post and Courier that draws from the reporting resources and knowledge of our newsroom to help you better understand South Carolina. Are there any stories you'd like to hear on the show? Kicking off a new season of wine stories from the Southeast, this episode features Matthew Conway - the owner, operator, and sommelier at The Tippling House in Charleston's Elliotborough neighborhood. The Tippling House is an intimate wine bar set in a Charleston Single house, and the wine list is printed and dated every day highlighting a global selection of bottles produced by families that respect the land they farm and the history of their domaines. We talk about the goals of his wine program, why he allows all of the wines to be available by the half bottle, and how he sources from his personal cellar to create a list called “Matthew's Stash”. He talks about how he strives to create a wine bar that caters to all wine lovers regardless of taste or budget. We chat about making the move to Charleston, South Carolina in March of 2020 after 17 years in New York City and 14 years as partner and beverage director at Restaurant Marc Forgione. Conway, a native Californian, moved to NYC in 2004 where he worked for the late Chef Gray Kunz at Café Gray in the Time Warner center from 2004-2007. In 2010, he took a short leave to work in the world-famous cellars of Taillevent in Paris, France. After returning in the fall of 2010, Restaurant Marc Forgione received one Michelin Star and shortly thereafter, Matthew became a certified coffee sommelier, was honored as one of Zagat's “30 Under 30” in 2012 and named one of Star Chefs “Rising Star Sommeliers” of 2015. Matthew has consistently been a featured sommelier at several of the top wine events of the year including but not limited to La Paulée and La Fête du Champagne. Matthew now holds partnership at La Tablée which focuses on the Northern Rhône Valley, so we dive into what fascinates him most about this region. Since opening The Tippling House in October 2021, his team has received glowing coverage from Wine Spectator and Charleston City Paper. The Post & Courier also just named Matthew and his fiancé Carissa Hernandez a Charleston “Food and Beverage Power Couple” in February of 2022. My guests on today’s podcast are Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent of the band Shovels & Rope. Most of the songs featured in this episode are from their latest album, Busted Jukebox Vol. 3, which you can buy at your local record store or download on Bandcamp.I was thinking back to 2012, when I interviewed them for a profile in the Charleston City Paper. They were hugely popular in Charleston at the time, and after years of relentless touring they were finally breaking into the national scene for folk and Americana music. They were a little self-conscious about the first taste of success, which seemed like a good indicator that they wouldn’t let it go to their heads.I got to see one of their last hometown shows before they really blew up, and it still ranks as one of my favorite concerts ever. It was a scorching August night at the Pour House, a James Island bar, and people were sweating and screaming and dancing their asses off in the crowd.Onstage, Cary Ann and Michael were sweaty and delirious as the rest of us, stripped down to their undershirts and singing their guts out. They took turns keeping rhythm on a drumset that looked like it had been salvaged from the side of the road. It was bandaged together with duct tape, and they pounded away on the snare and floor tom with a plastic maraca. They still play hometown shows, but they need a little bit more space now. They host the annual High Water Festival at a riverfront park in my neighborhood, a fact that brings me no small amount of civic pride. It’s been a vicarious thrill to watch them scrap their way into a successful career, and it was a pleasure to catch up with them about their art, their view of the world, and their adventures in parenting.Twitter // Bookshop // Bandcamp // Apple Podcasts // Spotify Podcasts This is a public episode. Discover the brewing history of the Holy City! There can be no debate that Charleston has one of the best craft beer scenes in the country. Beer was commercially produced as early as the 1720s on the islands and formalized with Palmetto Brewing Company after the Civil War. The name has carried on to modern day and inspired dozens of brewers to make the South Carolina city their home base, with many of those being in the neighborhood tokened the Brewery District. Suggested beers when visiting: Who's Brett IPA (Revelry) and Paradise IPA (Holy City). Information for this episode comes from Charleston Beer by Timmons Pettigrew, Charleston City Paper, and the New York Times. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/brewerytowns/support

One bright morning in May 1953, Aldous Huxley dissolved four-tenths of a gram of mescaline in a glass of water, drank it, and waited to see what happened. It wasn’t idle curiosity that drove the author of Brave New World to try the psychedelic alkaloid of the peyote cactus. Late in life, he had questions that remained unanswered. Chief among them were questions about perception, self-knowledge, and human connection.“We live together, we act on, and react to, one another; but always and in all circumstances we are by ourselves,” Huxley wrote in The Doors of Perception, the 1954 account of his mescaline experiment. “The martyrs go hand in hand into the arena; they are crucified alone. Embraced, the lovers desperately try to fuse their insulated ecstasies into a single self-transcendence; in vain. By its very nature every embodied spirit is doomed to suffer and enjoy in solitude.”For the second episode of the Brutal South Podcast, I brought on a guest who shared his experience with another psychedelic drug, the psilocybin mushroom, which has been compared to mescaline for its hallucinogenic and therapeutic qualities.Adam F. Naughton spent much of his 20s working for Republican politicians in South Carolina before undertaking some radical changes in his life and worldview. He now considers himself a socialist, and he has gotten involved with disability activism. While no single experience pushed him over the edge, he says taking psilocybin while undergoing integration therapy helped him see the world in a different light.I’m no drug evangelist, and I’ve never tried psychedelics, but I am fascinated by their potential. If you are interested in learning more, John Semley has an excellent piece on the state of psychedelic therapy in the May issue of The New Republic (currently it’s for subscribers only; sorry). I am also pretty pleased with this feature I wrote for the Charleston City Paper in 2014 about an Iraq War veteran who found relief from PTSD in a clinical therapy trial involving MDMA, also known as ecstasy.Adam’s website is notyourinspiration.org. Today we're talking with Ashley Harwood of Ashley Hardwood Woodturning. Our first ever woodturner on the podcast, Ashley started about 9 years ago shortly after going to art school for sculpture and installation art. Knowing that she wanted to create things for a living, she originally thought she would start with glass blowing. However, after taking a woodturning class with her father, she decided to dive into the wood community. She now travels all over teaching woodturning classes and creating wood-turned art! When first starting out, Ashley displayed her work at the Charleston Farmers Market. Soon, she realized that there was also quite a bit of interest from people in woodturning as a hobby. So she wisely added teaching to her repertoire of income generation and began traveling and teaching wood-turning classes throughout the U.S.  Loving the ability to be her own boss, work with her hands, and being able to take something from a hunk of wood and create something unique and amazing are all of Ashley's biggest motivators. We loved her comment that “She's so happy with the freedom of being her own boss, she's not even sure if she'd be able to be someone's employee anymore!”  Show Highlights: In every city, there is a local chapter for the American Organization of Wood Turners. These are non-profit clubs that ask 1-3 people to visit and teach in their city.Ashley holds classes in her own shop as well as travels all over the U.S. Marketing Efforts Ashley has 66,000 Followers on InstagramShe posts almost every day and showcases current projects that she's working on as well as items she personally thinks are interestingIn 2012 the Charleston City Paper did a mini video documentary on Ashley and posted it to Youtube. Sen. Tim Scott joins us, laughs at the NAACP and takes on the Charleston City Paper, which called his win last week "less than inspirational." Governor Nikki Haley's Health Department still won't tell me where she has the potential Ebola patients stashed, That virus that makes you dumber doesn't just change your brain, it alters your DNA. Plus, the Obama administration counted on stupid voters to put Obamacare in place, a salute to our veterans, what really happens to war dogs after they've served, proof that miracles still happen, if you commit murder deliberately with your car, should it be treated the same as if you did it with a gun? The secret to success is to marry someone boring. (73:48)

The Charleston City Paper says Sen. Tim Scott's win is "far from inspirational." Boy did that get callers stirred up. Plus, you thought flu season was bad, now there's a virus that makes you -- dumber. And the change is permanent. TIFT MERRITT has already produced an impressive body of work and earned a passionate, dedicated audience. A North Carolina native, Tift began her music career in the clubs in Chapel Hill. Though she loves her new home in New York City, she still considers North Carolina home. Her live performances, both with her band and on her own, are similarly riveting. Tift's stellar album "See You On The Moon" is a most important step forward in a remarkable artistic journey that continues to search, penetrate, and surprise. DANGERMUFFIN is a sand-blasted, rough-around-the-edges trio that casts a fresh perspective on American roots music. Based in Folly Beach, SC, the group is anchored by the thought-provoking lyrical wit of songwriter Dan Lotti, Nashville-veteran percussionist Steven Sandifer and lead guitarist Mike Sivilli. Accolades include winning Relix Magazines JamOff! competition for emerging bands and the reader-voted Best House Band in the Charleston City Papers Best Of 2009. Dangermuffin brings a new level of groove to Americana music a punchy, folk-jam pastry for the sweet-toothed soul of the South. Their new CD is "Moonscapes" on released on Dualtone.
