Alan Pearce joins us for the first time on Wake the Dead to discuss his book “Coma & Near Death Experience.” Which documents the experiences of individuals who woke up from coma to describe their experiences while unconscious. Every day around the world, thousands of people are placed in medically-induced comas. For some coma survivors, the experience is an utter blank. Others lay paralyzed, aware of everything around them but are unable to move, speak, or even blink. Many experience alternate lives spanning decades, lives they grieve once awakened. Some encounter ultra-vivid nightmares, while others undergo a deep, spiritual oneness with the universe or say they have glimpsed the afterlife. Contrary to popular belief, medically induced comas ARE NOT SLEEP. It does not restore the body the way sleep does. Doctors sell it as sleep, it is not. Coma affects a different portion of the brain. The regenerative effects of sleep are actually turned off by the drugs used to induce coma. There are no benefits to medically induced comas and the process is unnecessary. More often than not many coma survivors go on to suffer lasting cognitive and physical harm. Exploring proven alternatives to medically-induced coma, Alan shows how we can avoid the suffering caused by comas, this book reveals the wide variety of conscious states that can arise during comas, both positive and negative, and how accepting the reality of these experiences is crucial not only to the recovery of coma survivors, but also to the field of consciousness and NDE studies. Alan Nakagawa is an interdisciplinary artist with archiving tendencies, primarily working with sound, often incorporating various media and working with communities and their histories.Nakagawa has been working on a series of semi-autobiographic sound-architecture/tactile sound experiences, utilizing multi-point audio field recordings of historic interiors; Peace Resonance; Hiroshima/Wendover combines recordings of the interiors of the Hiroshima Atomic Dome (Hiroshima, Japan) and Wendover Hangar (Utah); Conical Sound; Antoni Gaudi and Simon Rodia combines recordings of the interiors of Watts Towers (Los Angeles) and the Sagrada Familia (Barcelona, Spain). Premiered in 2023, Point of Turn, is his first vibratory sound work involving the human voice; utilizing collected stories about moments or events that resulted in someone leaving their organized religion. For this work, the combining of these stories and the analog data stretching of a verse and chorus of the 1970's seminal pop band, 10CC's hit song, “I'm Not in Love”. There isn't really an area of medicine that has led to as much self-proclaimed expertise than nutrition. If someone knows how to make a great smoothie they seem to have the credentials to give other people smoothie advice. But why with that same logic, do we never see someone who owns a beating heart claim to be a cardiologist or someone who owns a brain to be a neurosurgeon. And yet, for some reason, if you own a blender, you could be nutrition's next big thing. Nutrition as a science has struggled to fit the research mould that we study pharmaceuticals in, which hasn't done nutrition any favours. In this episode, I invite one of my own mentors, Alan Flannigan, to the podcast to talk about myths in nutrition, and how nutrition might just be turning the evidence-corner in the world of science and research.  We talk about how women in particular are vulnerable to crappy science, and why it's important for the average reader to understand why nutrition is so hard to study. If you struggle to tell what's real and what's fake online, this episode will give you insight (and a few laughs) on how to navigate online nutrition conversations.  Alan is currently a PhD candidate in nutrition at the University of Surrey, having completed his Masters degree in nutrition science at the same institution. Alan is the founder of Alinea Nutrition, an online education hub dedicated to providing impartial, science-based nutrition analysis. Alan is also Research Communication Officer for Sigma Nutrition, creating educational resources for nutrition science.
