In the quiet neighborhood of Westbourne Road, Chester, the walls of Lucy Letby's semi-detached home bore witness to a chilling secret. It wasn't hidden in plain sight, but on crammed Post-it notes filled with her minuscule, frantic scrawls. These scribblings have become crucial evidence, offering a stark window into Letby's deeply troubled psyche. While detectives have posited that these notes were a cryptic way for Letby to end her sinister spree, a deeper analysis reveals more. These Post-its are not a confession, nor are they simple scribbles. They provide a raw, unfiltered look into the recesses of a disturbed mind. As a forensic psychiatrist, delving into the minds of individuals who have committed grievous crimes is not new to me. In secure prisons, tightly locked hospital wards, and courtrooms, I've encountered many who tread the dark path. But Lucy Letby is distinct. The notes are filled with expressions that exemplify 'negative cognitions'. Phrases such as "I don't deserve Mum + Dad", "Hate myself", and "The world is better off without me" resonate with overwhelming guilt, shame, and self-hatred. The inherent contradictions in her notes, with statements like "I haven't done anything wrong" juxtaposed against confessions of her evil nature, signify a tormented soul battling her own conscience. And although these notes give us a glimpse of this internal strife, her guilt, shame, and self-awareness were evidently not potent enough to halt her murderous actions or elicit a confession during the trial. Interspersed in these scribbles, Letby frequently mentions her cats, Tigger and Smudge. Perhaps they were her solace, beings she could control and exhibit genuine affection towards, in stark contrast to the heinous crimes she committed. Despite these profound revelations, classifying Letby under standard psychiatric conditions remains challenging. There's little evidence in these notes that hint towards her suffering from a severe mental illness. However, signs of anxiety and depression permeate her writings. The scribbled "HELP" and "HATE", coupled with the overwhelming intensity of her notes, all point towards a deeply troubled mind. Yet, these symptoms did not impair her daily functions. Colleagues never reported any peculiar stress or abnormal behavior in her role at the hospital. This duality in her nature, of committing unimaginable crimes while outwardly maintaining a composed façade, is haunting. The motivations behind Letby's actions are intricate. While one might be tempted to accept her statement, "I killed them on purpose because I'm not good enough to care for them", as a genuine reflection of her motives, it might just be an expression of self-pity. The actual driving forces, it appears, were the desire for control, power, and a perverse thrill in being around the grieving process. Letby's morbid need to be present during moments of overwhelming parental grief, even when the babies were not her patients, underscores a deeper, more sinister craving. Moreover, despite her crimes, Letby doesn't align neatly with the classical traits of psychopathy. She might have lied to shield her deeds, but she didn't fabricate an alternate reality. The key differentiator here is her emotional perception. While she might cognitively understand the repercussions of her actions, emotionally, she remains detached. The suffering of others doesn't cause her pain; instead, she draws a perverse pleasure from it. Lucy Letby is an enigma. Her behavior before her heinous acts didn't raise alarms. She was perceived as amiable, diligent, and competent. Trying to reconcile this image with the one painted by her Post-it notes is unsettling. With Letby unlikely to ever leave prison, the chances of her receiving intensive psychiatric support, leading to a potential remorse or epiphany, are slim. In conclusion, Lucy Letby remains one of the most perplexing clinical cases ever encountered. While we might never fully grasp the intricacies of her mind, these Post-it notes serve as a chilling testament, providing the only tangible insight into her twisted psyche. This was a freestyle verbal fruit salad of a conversation with Tommy but as always, it was fun. Sometimes no plan is the best plan. Among other things, we spoke about how honest to be with your kids at Christmas time, what and who makes a good therapist, the idea of ‘the student being ready', lying to yourself, a book I hated that became a book I loved, what I'm watching on Netflix and lots more. Interest rates could take off after the Reserve Bank raised the Official Cash Rate up to a six-year high. It is promising to go higher still in a bid to reel in inflation, which is at a 30-year high. The benchmark rate has been raised by half a percentage point to 2.5 percent. First Home Buyers' Club director Lesley Harris says as the official cash rate rise hits home loans there's less income for people to spend on the essentials, and wages are not rising. She told Checkpoint it's extra tough for first home buyers, as there are far fewer low-deposit mortgages approved now. In the past about 20 percent of a bank's book could include mortgages with a deposit of less than 20 percent. But that number of loans has been halved.

Preparing for postpartum to best support Mum, Dad and Baby. In today's episode I'm joined by my partner Tyson Venables. We are sharing out approach to preparing for the postpartum period (which is defined as the first 6 weeks post-birth). This is a really raw episode. We talk about the practical things we did to support ourselves and to aid in the birth recovery. As well as diving into the challenges that we faced with sleep deprivation and the grieving process of letting go of our old way of being. The Dad's perspective on postpartum is really missing and Tys shares honestly the struggles he faced and the things he did to support himself and both River and I. We dive into intimacy after birth. How we supported our nutritional needs. What I did to physically recover from birth. Why we asked for no visitors for at least 30 days. Lessons around setting boundaries. Why we spent so much time naked and so much more! It's a juicy one. Share it with your partner! In the final installment of our Halloween Guest Makes Mike Watch series (we'll come up with a better name for it next year, we promise), Jonny Grant - co-screenwriter of THE DARE - returns to the podcast to dive deep into British horror! We discuss a relative obscurity - 2008's MUM & DAD - and jump around to a variety of topics like: what makes British horror films different from American ones? Was this movie an influence on his own work? Would Paddington save the day if he arrived on the scene? The answers to all these questions and more lie within!
This crazy old world can be very overwhelming sometimes - no matter what age you are; and I know from experience that we need to take care of our health (mentally and physically). It's too easy to forget about ourselves - whilst we continue to spin plates and react to the chaos around us. However, when we do neglect our own needs - then the cracks start to show. In this episode, I am chatting with Sam Bernice - who is founder of The Children's Yoga Foundation. I quickly learn that yoga is not just about sitting on a mat and testing your own flexibility. It is an entire wellbeing philosophy that will help parents and children alike, establish a better relationship with ourselves so that we can better cope with the challenges that we often face on a daily basis. Want to know more? Then Grab a cuppa - and keep listening! ~~~ More about Samantha : Hi – I'm Sam, founder of Sam B Yoga and The Children's Yoga Foundation. In my 20 years of teaching in schools and being a parent of three, I have noticed children developing more and more problems with their mental health. There is so much pressure put on teachers and parents to help with this, but many of us are struggling with our own mental health. How can the practice of yoga help you or your child? Yoga is not just about the postures and getting on the mat. Following this science and philosophy offers us as parents deep contentment and wisdom that can be shared with our children. Modeling self-care and well-being techniques continually guide and support our children. The practice of yoga, especially off the mat, aids our children in recognising and managing their emotions, instilling healthy habits and mastering their minds in a journey of self-discovery. So as parents, it all starts with us. Ask yourself, are you ok? How can you optimise your well-being, to be a better Mum/Dad/person? A lovely place to start is trying out family yoga together. It will strengthen your connection and help you learn about it in a fun way. Try reading some books on yoga, try some postures and give some breathing techniques a go. If you need any help or guidance, I have many years of experience in making it exciting, appealing and accessible to our younger generation. In this episode Sarah Tucker, Managing Director of The Mortgage Mum, talks about the Bank of Mum & Dad and how they can help you buy property.... *** How to use the Bank of Mum & Dad to help you get on the property ladder What is the Bank of Mum and Dad? A recent report from Legal and General revealed that the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad' now contribute to 26% of funds to the UK housing market. And if Mum and Dad were an actual bank, they would be the 9th biggest lender in the market. 84% of parents are helping their children get on the property ladder, 57% are doing that with a gift, 18.3% are doing it with a no interest loan and 4.8% are doing it as a loan with interest. The Bank of Mum and Dad started as a phrase and has become a very real thing. Many parents are having to help their children get on the property ladder - saving for your first home is not easy. And sometimes the deposit is the main factor, but for other people, it's actually the affordability. There's lots of different help available for all of the different scenarios. And we're going to share how your Mum and Dad can help you get on the property ladder and all of the different ways they can do it. Gifting money towards a property - how does it work? So the first thing that your Mum and Dad can do is gift money. There's a big difference between being gifted money and being loaned money - lots of mortgage applications involve a gifted deposit. So this is a gifted amount of money that the child uses as a deposit. It's really important that we know if the parents are expecting the money back, because if they are expecting the money back, we have to take these payments into consideration when working out how much you're borrowing and how much you're able to borrow. It has to be taken into account as a loan, as a commitment. Now on the whole, mortgage lenders do prefer the money is gifted and the difference here is if it's gifted, your parents have to sign a letter detailing how much they'll be gifting and that they do not want the money back - that the money does not need to be repaid and that they therefore have no interest in the property. Gifted deposit letter If your parents are gifting you money for a deposit, you will need them to write that letter. We have a template available for you. A lot of lenders have their own templates as well, but we know exactly what the wording needs to be. We will talk you through that and we'll tell you exactly what that needs to say. Often we'll give you the template and your parents can then fill in the blanks and sign it. This is needed for the mortgage lender, but it's also needed from our perspective, just to make sure that everybody is in agreement, that the money is not being paid back and that we don't need to include it as a loan. So that's the most common way that people help their children get on the property ladder is by gifting a deposit. However, that is not always possible for every parent. It's a lot of money and there are other options out there if you don't want to gift the money. If your parent don't want to gift you the money, but you do want to find out ways that they can help you... Have you heard of the Family Springboard Mortgage? If you are struggling to save that deposit, there is something called a Family Springboard Mortgage from Barclays. We've actually done many, many cases on the Family Springboard Mortgage. How does it work? How it works is you own the property but use your family or friends savings as a deposit to buy your own house with your own mortgage, and they get their money back with interest. You don't need a deposit. You can borrow the full purchase price of your home because your helper provides 10% of security for five years, and this acts as your deposit. If you're the helper, i.e. if you're the Mum and Dad, family, friend etc, you can help someone buy their own home. You don't have to be their parents. How you do that is you open a helpful start account in your name, which is linked to the mortgage, and you transfer 10% of the property purchase price into it. That is then used as security on their mortgage. In five years time, you will get an attractive rate of interest on your savings for the agreed term. It's typically five years and you can help more than one family member or friend get their own place at the same time. Once you get your money back, you can obviously do it again. If you're the homebuyer you don't need a deposit, you can use these savings. So you have 10% into a helpful start account and that will be your deposit. And then you'll borrow 90% of the purchase price. They'll need to keep it there for five years. As I say, you can borrow over 35 years, which can make things a lot more affordable for you, but we will look at the mortgage term completely tailored to you. You select a fixed rate for five years so that you know exactly what your mortgage payments are going to be, and that they won't change over that time. So it can work brilliantly because the person who wants to help gets their money back and the person who needs the help gets the property and doesn't need to find a deposit. So that's a really, really good scheme with Barclays that we can help you with. Another option is a Guarantor Mortgage... Now the other way that you can help (as a parent) is you can actually go on the mortgage as well. So if affordability is the problem, and it's not really about the deposit, then you can go on the mortgage. And there's a few ways that you can do this. So lots of people use the term Guarantor Mortgages, and this is basically where the guarantors income is taken into account when lenders work out how much you can borrow. Joint Borrower Sole Proprietor There's something called joint borrower, sole proprietor, which is very similar, and that's where there's two of you on the mortgage, but the property will only be in one person's name. That's sometimes really, really important to people that want to get on the property ladder. They don't want their parent to be on the deeds because that could involve a lot more stamp duty potentially, but also they want to own their own property. They don't want to own the property with their parents. So you can go on the mortgage, but you don't have to go on the deeds, which is really useful. And particularly, as I say, with stamp duty, if you own your own property or multiple properties, you do have to take into account that there is an additional 3% stamp duty for any additional properties that you own over the first one. That can add up to a lot of money. First time buyers get a relief with stamp duty (at the time of recording the episode) so that's going to be something you want to avoid if possible. Now, if you are thinking about having a Guarantor Mortgage, you need to take into account that the guarantor will need to be able to afford all of their own current commitments and lifestyle, as well as that mortgage. So you do need to look at affordability and a lender will look at it in exactly the same way as normal. So do bear that in mind. But it is a really good way of helping. There are lenders out there who will let as many as four applicants on one mortgage, and that can really help boost the income! Are there any downsides to having a Guarantor Mortgage? Now, the negatives of that is we have to take into account the age of your parents. If they're going on the mortgage with you, when we're taking into account the term. This is what can cause issues for lots of our clients who look to do this. Lots of you look to do this when you're not just first time buyers, but when you're looking at potentially splitting up with your partner and you're wondering how can you borrow this money on your own. That's when we see this happen, a lot. What you've got to take into account is a mortgage lender is going to lend to retirement age generally. And so if your parents are not far away from that, then the mortgage payments can be quite high and that can affect affordability. But there are lenders that will go up to age 80. It's not the be-all and end-all, if your parents are in your fifties or sixties, they can still help, but you just need to bear that in mind. What about lending money to your children as a payback loan? If you do want to lend your children money or your parents are thinking about lending you money you do need to bear in mind that the lender is going to take it into account as a loan. Some lenders won't accept borrowers if they take a loan to fund their deposit, even from parents. So it can be more tricky if you're doing it that way. It's not impossible though, so you just need to sort of let your mortgage broker know, and they can look into the options there. It's perfectly understandable if you want the money back, but that's where the family scheme may come into account and is a better way round of you doing it. I've talked about Guarantor Mortgages and joint mortgages. With Guarantor Mortgages sometimes a charge is placed against the Guarantors house. Now, what this means is that if you are the borrower and you don't pay your mortgage payment, that your guarantors home could be at risk. Talk about it! So it's really important that you do have these really upfront conversations going into this - it's a big deal for your Mum and Dad to help you. You do need to be able to have those difficult conversations around money. I would say that's essential and uncomfortable, but essential because otherwise that's what can lead to arguments later on. It's serious, especially if someone is becoming a Guarantor, they need to seek their own legal advice so that they fully understand the commitment that they're taking on. We recommend that they do that every single time as do the lenders. What about the Family Mortgage from the Family Building Society? There are other ways that we can help. There's a lender called the Family Building Society. So it's no surprise that they do a family mortgage, which helps buyers with a low deposit to purchase a property using security provided by their family and the principle behind it is quite simple. It helps families help their take the first step on the property ladder. So as long as you have at least 5% deposit (and that can be gifted) and you have family that will give additional security by using their savings or having a charge on their own property, they are happy to help. They can do 95% mortgages without the need for a gift or loan. And they have different rates obviously available and different affordability. Now how it works... Family members can help by providing security in one or a combination of three different ways, either: With family savings, With value in a family property or; Offsetting part of the mortgage. So I'm just going to talk you through the savings. So they would put their savings in the family security account, which earns them interest too. If a buyer can find a 5% deposit from savings or a gift, then the family mortgage allows a family member to provide security for the buyer's mortgage in, by depositing savings in a family security account. If the house is sold and the property is in negative equity, there is a risk that the money in the family security account may have to be used to make good any shortfall. So you do need to make sure you're getting all that legal advice around it because it's good when it's good. We've got a case study that I'm going to talk you through just to try and help your understanding here, of how this would work in a real life scenario... We've got the Wilson's story. So George Wilson is 55 years old and he earns a reasonable income as a teacher. His stepdaughter, Christine, has recently graduated from University and he'd like to help her buy her first home. However, he doesn't have savings to spare. Christine has saved seven and a half thousand, a 5% deposit towards buying the flat she's chosen. She wants to borrow £142,500. However, George can't spare any cash, but he does own his home. The family mortgage will allow George to use some of the value of his home as security for Christine's mortgage. And by doing this, he can help Christine get a more favourable interest rate than she would otherwise be able to get. He is not using the whole value of his home, just the £30,000 needed to secure Christine a better interest rate. And assuming she keeps her mortgage up to date, the charge on George's property comes to an end. After 10 years, during that time, he is liable for £30,000 of any shortfall should the flat have to be sold for less than the amount that Christine owes on the mortgage. It could mean he'll have to sell his house to find the money. However, the family building society helped by providing a safety net. And finally, Offset accounts... Now there's one other way that you can help your children or that your family can help you with the Family Building Society. And that is with a family offset account. How can you offset family savings to reduce the amount of the Mortgage you pay interest on? So I am going to do an episode on Offset Mortgages in general, but this is really important. We've got our case study where Dev is 27 and he's landed his dream job. He's finally able to afford the monthly payments on the kind of house he'd like to buy. He saved £10,000 for a deposit. Now, Dev's grandparents have savings. They want to use them to help him, but they eed the money for their retirement. They're not able to gift it to him. They put £50,000 of their savings into an offset account with the Family Building Society. They don't receive interest on it, which means that the benefit passes to Dev. So instead of Dev paying interest on the full mortgage, he only pays interest on the loan amount minus these savings of £50,000. This reduces his monthly payments and gives security for the mortgage, which means the interest rate he pays is also lower than he might've got otherwise. So the money remains his grandparents' money provided he keeps the repayments up and then they can expect it to be returned in full after 10 years. The precise date will depend on the combination of fixed rate mortgage periods chosen by Dev. The interest that they lose is likely to be less than the amount that Dev's saved by not having to pay interest on the full mortgage amount. So that is another great way a family can help with affordability. They're a brilliant lender, but they're one of many who actually do help when it comes to looking for solutions for you that are a little bit out of the ordinary as always. Why working with a broker is a good idea... I would always say the best thing to do is find a broker that you know, like, and trust that you can have those conversations with and brainstorm, because actually what you need sometimes is a soundboard. We do lots of Zoom calls with parents. We'll do a whole family meeting on Zoom so that everybody feels super comfortable and everybody understands exactly what's happening. The other beauty is we can record all of those Zoom calls. So if somebody can't make the Zoom call or the Team's call, then we can record it so that that can be played back to them and they can feel really comfortable with all of it. It's a big deal for the child and it is a big deal for the parents. It's not something that everybody can do and so it's just useful to know the different ways. Finally, to summarise... In summary, if you are thinking about asking your parents to help you get on the property ladder, or if you're a parent wondering if you can help in some way, you can gift money, you can loan money, you can go on the mortgage and not on the deeds, you can go on the mortgage and go on the deeds. You can have a charge on your property to act as collateral. You can put money into savings accounts, which can act as a deposit or indeed offset some of the interest of your child's mortgage. You could remortgage as well, so you could remortgage your house which is still really gifting or loaning money, and obviously there are other options out there that don't involve a mortgage such as personal or secured loans. Just think really carefully, make sure you're getting legal advice. If you're a parent, make sure you're fully understanding what the risks are. Money is very emotive and it can be very awkward to talk about, but if you are thinking about going into an arrangement with your children, you're going to need to have those conversations and get really comfortable about talking about the uncomfortable. We are extremely passionate about helping people get on the property ladder and extremely passionate about making sure people understand exactly what they're doing when it comes to their mortgage.

We made it to Christmas week —- Christmas 2020 will certainly be one to remember and many of us will have have new story to tell about this year. Today I want to share stories of traditions that have been shared by some of our listeners. It all started with realizing that talk with my mom about christmases past had brought a lot of joy to both of us. She at 96 will be alone in her nursing home. One of the workers that was giving her a bath asked my mom if she knew what lefsa was (mom made it every year) and a great conversation was started! The worker's grandpa was Norwegian and they started talking about all kinds of Norwegian traditions. I shared this story on my facebook page and asked for other to share theirs. These are just a few! Cathy - My dad didn’t cook in our growing up home, except when mom was in the hospital having our baby sister. But at Christmas, we would all be in the kitchen together making Christmas treats. Fudge, divinity, taffy (we’d butter our hands and dad would let us pull when the taffy had cooled enough that it wouldn’t burn us.) We made quite a mess with all the different treats, but what fun we had! —— Les - When we were younger we would all take a different counter in the kitchen and make our favorite Christmas Cookies. KC - Cookie baking marathon on Christmas Eve. The kids and hubby have always helped and look forward to it every year and the Christmas meal: Colleen- We also had chicken and noodles over mashed potatoes... just a bit of starch Tina - My husband's family always has cinnamon rolls and chicken and noodles on Christmas day!! I'm sure this started because it was a way to feed a lot but now it's a tradition that we cherish!! Shari - Christmas eve..grandma always made stew with turnips & rutabagas ..I always thought it off but now that she is gone..I miss it terribly.. (don't we all relate to that?) Samantha - Family dinner!!!!!! We would start cooking the day before and always without fail we always forgot the corn in the microwave. Janice - My earliest memories of Christmas in Queensland, Australia, is sweltering heat but sitting with Mum Dad, my sister and Nana eating a roast dinner and Christmas pudding Church services: Candle light services were mentioned by many! Deb, Betty & Cathy - all talked about going to church on Christmas eve - maybe having a kids program - and going home with a sack with an apple or orange, nuts and some candy. I had forgotten that we did that too - so how fun to be reminded! Marsha- Church on Christmas Eve - this year it will be 15 minutes in the church parking lot singing Silent Night with candles. Hope we don't all cry. We won't be able to hug each other. We are be thankful to be alive! Other Traditions: Twila - I don’t think my mother intended for this to be a tradition, but every year it seemed like she would forget where some of the presents were hid and through out Christmas Day more presents showed up as she would remember! Brenda- Still love filling a thermos with cocoa and driving around looking at Christmas lights in our jammies! Katherine Connors - Baking having my children open up one present on Christmas Eve when they were small that was always PJ's and now I continue that tradition and get PJ's for my grandchildren Jean - In New Zealand on Christmas eve we put a pillow case on the foot of our beds for Santa. When we woke we explored the pillowcase 1 big present and fresh fruit nuts lollies and balloons and other bits. Family gatherings: Barb - I have 8 younger siblings, 5 sisters and 3 brothers. I'm the oldest, both my parents are gone. Last years count was 148 people. We rent a hall. Will so miss this year not gathering, Heather - For the past 22 years my family has gathered at a roller skating rink where my mom and her siblings grew up. It turns out to be a pretty nice crowd... And a bunch of extended family comes as well. It's been hard knowing that I won't see these family members till next Christmas. Several shared about this is their first Christmas being spent along - or perhaps they have lost someone very important this year and will miss them terribly. I just want to say It OK if this is a hard Christmas - if you miss someone so very much, its also means you were blessed to have them in your life - and you have precious memories stored up! You can be grateful and sad and lonely - all of the things at the same time. Christmas itself, is, after all the most important story of all.

I don't know what to feel when I hear from fellow musicians that they started learning their instrument at 3 years old. Part of me feels that if I had done the same I would be a more holistic musician and perhaps more proficient in the instrument if we are talking about the 10 000 hours rule. The more skeptical side of mind thinks that I might grow to hate practicing and never take on this profession... Perhaps sometimes parents do not know what they are truly signing up for when they put their children through music education from an early age. The child might grow to love music performance, and parents might hear the sentence "Mum/Dad, I want to enter music school" that they would most likely object. Placida is a perfect example of someone who has received music education from an early age. She has went on to the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory (Singapore) graduating with a Bachelor's in Violin performance and the Royal Conservatory in The Hague (Netherlands) with a Master's in Music Education and a Bachelor's in Baroque music performance. She is part of Singapore's Baroque ensemble, Red Dot Baroque, an organization that is bringing baroque music to their audience in a refreshing way.On this episode of You Play A What? I learnt about all things baroque, from performance practice to the spirit of baroque music. There were some pretty eye opening revelation.. Join us and decide for yourself, is it Buh-rock or Br-Rowk and vibrato in baroque music! Check out Placida's YouTube Channel for some top quality violin/violone performance!Thank you so much for tuning in to this episode of the podcast! Small Biz Matters – Providing the small business community with educational content and advocacy since 2014with Alexi Boyd, broadcaster, advocate and small business owner.Date: 4 August 2020 When the chips are down you need a peak body on your side. And boy are the chips down right now. Right now small, medium and even large retailers are losing income and purging employees to the point of no return. And their biggest overhead? Commercial Rent. And suddenly, the Code of conduct is everyone’s business. What are the Small business owner’s rights and the landlord’s responsibilities? What is mandated and what is inferred? Which level of government administers and is policing the protections? And importantly; who can you turn to for help? Right now the National Retail Association is flooded with queries about what has been mandated. Kyle Swain is the Leasing Advisor to the National Retailers Association and has been in the room supporting and negotiating for you and your business so we’ve brought him on Small Biz Matters to help you understand the changes. Topics we’ll be covering: Background - The creation of the National Cabinet Code of Conduct and the SME Commercial Leasing Principals How did the code of conduct come about and who did the National Cabinet consult when it was created? What is it’s intent? Administration committee (a group of advisors in this case made up of 4 peak bodies) gave info to National Cabinet. National Retail Association’s advisor contributed to the guiding principles for the agreement to protect the tenants Then the States give effect to the code through legislation. So some states were quick to act and others slow to implement the desperately needed change. It is a mandatory National Code of conduct but many landlords wouldn’t act until the legislation actually assented in each state. So how does this work for business owners who have multiple locations across multiple states? What’s the main difference between the states? Confusion around the different data required by landlords in each state Now: what’s the current impact on small business? You mentioned you’ve had a big increase in businesses seeking information about the Code of Conduct to achieve rent relief and understand what their requirements are. There is a lot of grey area and it’s very open to interpretation. It’s not robust enough. How tough is it out there? It’s not just the Mum & Dad small-scale operators; the participants are across the board in terms of size How important is this code of conduct to keeping businesses alive? What about the big boys: Westfield etc. What’s your report card on them? It’s the landlords who have, over a number of years, pushed “market rents” to a level that is unsustainable for SME’s and resulted in such a large percentage of tenants and occupiers of real estate, whether it’s a retail premises, a commercial office space or a warehouse, who don’t have 3-6 months of cashflow in the business to survive a sustained downturn such as a pandemic. For many, particularly in retail, even 1 month of having to close the business and receiving no revenue, even if 50% of the rent is waived, will result in financial failure,... and we’re seeing that in small numbers already, and expect to see it in huge numbers after JobKeeper ends. So my report card on landlords generally is that the bigger ones are certainly fulfilling their minimum obligations under the Code, but not really doing enough to fulfil the ‘intent’ of the code and I fear they will suffer the impact of that for the next 3 or 4 financial years rather than having 1 bad year. The future: The continuing negotiation process between peak bodies & government across different scenarios The ‘reasonable recovery period’ - why is it important to understand what the definition of this period is? Returning to the two versions of “normal” - with or without the vaccine How dependent is the industry on Jobkeeper and why is it important to remember the impact it’s removal will have? With Jobkeeper now extended, will the Code of Conduct also be extended? And do we know what’s going to happen after this Code of Conduct period ends? How can small businesses improve the negotiation process? Where can those affected small businesses go for help? Peak bodies Webinars and understanding the legislation Know your rights, know where to go for help, educate to understand your requirements. Peak bodies can also support in the mediation process on the side of the small business Small business commissioners at state level & ASBFEO To find out more : The National Cabinet Mandatory Code of Conduct - SME Commercial Leasing Pricipals - https://www.pm.gov.au/sites/default/files/files/national-cabinet-mandatory-code-ofconduct-sme-commercial-leasing-principles.pdf About our Guest: Kyle is the Retail Director for LPC Cresa who were founded in 1993 and are now one of Australia and New Zealand’s’ leading, independent, tenant-only leasing and property advisory businesses, and part of the global Cresa group. Jesse Smith goes by too many names to mention but some attributes that are synonymous with those names are: happy, excited, stoked and a heart of gold. Born in Auckland then moving down to Taranaki so Mum & Dad could enjoy the surf, create fellowship and run their business (Seasons / Cheapskates, an iconic Taranaki surf shop that later included skate gear and then ultimately street culture that ran parallel to the upbringing of any Taranaki 90s kid) - Jesse is a man that warms the heart of everyone he passes. To say Jesse is an optimist would be a gross understatement. For years, the 34 year old has made every person within his radius feel like they mattered and is known for being able to change your day around with a simple conversation. However, amongst the smiles and laughter - there is also a story of a family battling a medical condition that continuously threatens the positive radiance of a man (and his family) who have long been at the epicentre for shaping the retail, surf and skate culture of the little yet excited hub that is Taranaki. I sat with the regions most positive man to discuss family, human science, the power of stickers and how religion, nature and good f*ckin attitude can help you through almost anything.
Jesus was a teacher. 2000 years ago they didn't have schools like we have, or even universities or churches. It was all very different. I love learning how to do new things by watching Youtube videos and by listening to podcasts. That's how I learnt how to make this podcast! In Jesus' day, there was no Youtube or podcasts. There were no TVs or radios or even electricity or microphones. People would stand up on street corners and speak what they wanted to teach in a really loud voice, and if you were walking past and thought that what they were saying was interesting then you'd stop and listen. I have hung out with some indigenous christians and they do something similar. The Christians will meet together in a park with chairs and microphones and will speak really loudly about Jesus. They hope that some of the people in the nearby homes might hear the gospel and come out and ask if they can become Christians. Anyway, Jesus had been doing lots of miracles and so everyone was talking about Jesus. He was big news! So not only did sick people want to come and be healed, but other people wanted to come and see sick people being healed. Even though there was no tv or newspapers, the news spread quickly and soon crowds began following Jesus wherever he went. Not just people from the town he was in, but people from the nearby towns as well! He thought going out of town, into the desert and lonely places would be better - more space and only those who were really keen would come out to hear him. There were no microphones back then either so I am not sure how the thousands and thousands of people could hear him, but they must have! “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 7:21 If I lived back then when Jesus was alive and wanted to teach these things people would probably have laughed at me. They definitely wouldn't have believed me. They might have even taken me to jail because I was saying things that weren't the same as what God had taught Moses. That would be saying that their hero Moses was wrong. But because Jesus was teaching these different teachings - the man who did all the miracles - the people listened. Many found themselves understanding, agreeing and wanting to follow Jesus. Not all of them though. Some of the people listening realised that Jesus was changing the laws Moses had given them and they didn't like that. They didn't recognise Jesus as being the Messiah even though all the clues from the prophets were there. Those people did not like that Jesus was popular and they plotted to get rid of Jesus. Jesus knew what was happening and had to be very careful with what he did and what he said. Sometimes these people would ask Jesus a question, hoping to trick him into saying something that might mean they could take him to jail, but Jesus was not tricked. He spoke very carefully and often asked them questions in return, stumping them at their own game. Jesus taught so many things and the disciples (plus others!) wrote it down even though writing was really hard back then, because they thought this stuff was important. Since then the letters and writings had been written and rewritten so they wouldn't perish, and later they were translated into our own language so we can read it. To have these books about Jesus - the gospels - to have access to any time we like is such an amazing blessing. Discussion Questions: Do you like learning new things? Why/why not? Talk together about how you like learning - do you like watching YouTube like I do, or reading books or do you like people explaining things to you? Mum/Dad, what is one thing you have learned from Jesus' teaching that really struck you as being really memorable and why?
Three Fs have been a consistent part of international bestseller Joanna Trollope's life: Fiction, family and feminism. She explains why here. The international bestseller says, “There will always be women who want to stay at home in the kitchen and make jam tarts with the three-year-old, and there will always be women who want to rule the world.” Which kind is she? And why does Jane Austen inspire her? This episode also includes a tribute to poet extraordinaire Eavan Boland from writer Colum McCann. So, Twitter Political Advertising Policy is out, and whilst I sympathise with the position they are in, I want to talk about how they changed the deal, and have turned their back on the very things that made them successful. The Internet, and particularly Twitter, were built on the exact behaviour that they are now trying to stop. There are two factions here that are at odds, and Twitter has completely abandoned one of them. For those of us who have been on the Internet for a long time, and are used to the "price of admission" of online conversations - banter, jokes, saying awful things, a good old fashioned flame war, and a hashtag pile-on, it would seem as though Twitter have now gone completely corporate - turning their back on the people that made the platform a success. For the young Woke journos, this might seem fair, because they grew up with a block button, and an expectation that Mum & Dad would keep them "safe".In today's episode, I talk a bit about that tension, and whilst I hope that Twitter can find the balance, it's really not looking likely.Support the show
With us growing old, our parents are aging as well, but we seldom realize that. Life is short and we must tell the people we love sooner. In 'A Date with Mum & Dad', I talk about the tragedies of life and how living the best, right now is important. Coz today is all we have.

Episode 9 - Niki & Ian Bowler (Mum & Dad) Quite simply put, Niki & Ian Bowler are my Mum & Dad and the people that raised me to be the person I am today. They emigrated to America over 6 years ago and I fly out to visit them once a year and during my most recent trip I thought it would be stupid to miss out on the opportunity to get to know them more than I do already! We discuss their move to states and how that came about, likes and dislikes of their surroundings and what they miss from the UK. So we are in the thick of school holidays and we know they can be a testing time for everyone involved! We take on a huge mission as parents to care, nurture, protect, inspire and guide our young ones however with the testing times of no routine, boredom, too much screen time and sibling spats, how on earth do we get through? I’ve had a few years doing this now and these are some of my top tips for coping? 1. Put Something in their Love Bank Before you start the day and try to get through everything you need to do before taking the kids out, give them a small amount of undivided attention, pay in to their bank and they are then set up for the rest of the day 2. Give Responsibilities Chores to help around the house are a great way to give them something to do and to also help you out at this particularly busy time. Come up with a list of jobs that you are willing to give pocket money for – encourage them to earn, it helps them learn how to manage money and it definitely slows down their spending when they know it’s their own cash! 3. Have boundaries and routine Set some sort of routine in place, maybe have a holiday timetable or a calendar up with planned dates on. Children respond well to boundaries and a framework. They are used to it in school and gives them check points through the day, the week and the holiday. This also helps you see the holiday as a whole, where your work fits in and where there are gaps that might need filling. 4. Be Slow To Lay Down The Law Don’t go making huge threats that you can’t uphold. Have few and fair rules, this is holiday, it’s time to enjoy some down time but that doesn’t mean that everything goes out of the window – and remember, consistency is key. 5. Don’t Be The Referee Get them to sort their own battles with each other, it’s a huge life skill and will deter unnecessary fights as it won’t become about getting Mum/Dad’s attention. 6. Enjoy your children They are only with us for a short time! The book I read from is The Rules of Life by Richard Templar and Liquid Thinking which I quoted earlier on re the psychology in the OJ Simpson defence was Liquid Thinking by Damian Hughes

She pivots and niched down her business in 2018 and is ready to embrace the challenges and the online world of health and sport in 2019. In this episode we talked about: Her journey to the South of France the steps Leigh took to niche her business Blue Ocean Strategy - Blue Ocean Red Ocean https://www.blueoceanstrategy.com how she has built her business up and how her philosophies and approach differ from other trainers Why she set up Fit Nutrition, how she changed her own health and fitness by ditching the fat loss and aesthetics goals in favor of strength and mastery of kettlebell techniques Exercises for menopause and peri-menopause how it changes. How she created a community who are like minded to their health and fitness. Growth is her word for the year. We want more movement and we need to consistently get that movement. I could give you a list of a 100 ways to move more, but unless you have a good system in place, you are probably are not likely to do them anyway. So before we even get to the movement part think about this: I could say, Antonia, here is the best fitness plan in the world - if you follow this, you will reach your goals. But if i’ve Given you something that you don’t enjoy doing, you won’t stick with it. Whatever movement we are going to incorporate, it has be something that you will do consistently. Consistency is the magic word. So how to get a stage where we can be more consistent with our fitness and our movement? So for me , the first step is: Find out what you like to do What really ticks your box? What do you really enjoy doing? Walking, running, boxing, kettlebells, Pilates, yoga...etc. What am I going to get really excited about doing every week? And of course it that might change over time, too. This can be really fun...this can mean going out and trying new and discovering new things. You never know until you try. I hear this with kettlebells all the time. Get out there, get out of your comfort zone and try something new. 2. Decide why you want to do something - that way it becomes more meaningful. Last week, on the FB group we looked at Why, What, How...overall, we are looking for consistency. 10 mins every day is more beneficial that a big exercise session once every two weeks. We are looking for progress, a little more, a little better. Why do you want more movement in your life? What is your goal? Narrow it down and get more specific. It will help you stay motivated to get that extra movement it. Are you trying to lose fat or gain strength or change your health markers? I have a client whose goal is to be able to run around a football pitch with his son. Every has their WHY. And knowing that will help you keep moving towards your goal. Without a goal we are all kind of floating...and when you float, you are far less likely to stay consistent. 3. Work your 3’s: Structure, Systems, and Scheduling: You’ve probably heard this in business coaching and the same can be applied to health and fitness. Structure: these are things and environments that surround us. The things that we put into place to get things done. So for movement, it might be choosing a gym or a class that is close to where we live, so its easy and convenient. Systems: These are processes and practices we use to make things happen. This can include an evening ritual of getting our gym bag ready the night before, or with nutrition, prepping our food for the next day. It’s putting things in place so it makes it easier for us to do the things we’ve set out to do. Scheduling: This is probably the most important one for busy people. We don’t wait for inspiration to strike to go out and get that movement...we schdule it in like we do any other appointment and we keep that appointment. You don’t wait to you feel like going to the dentist to make an appointment. You book it. Fitness and movement - it’s self-care. So we book that time in for ourselves because it is absolutely necessary. We book our fitness and nutrition like any other appointment...and you keep it. Keep that commitment to yourself. I have just finished a grassroots interview with Niki Harre, a leading academic at Auckland University - involved in psychology and sustainable ecological solutions. During this interview, we talked about how she enjoys her immersion into evolving positive change with her local community at the Point Chevalier Transition Towns group, where she finds an active group of localised participators intent on walking their talk. Because, she sees that there is a movement happening - one without a capital ‘m’ but, it’s a fundamental movement all the same. For example, they have the following active sub-groups up and running: The Old Homestead Community Garden with the Dignan Street Community Garden Hub, and the Bulk Purchasing Group. Then there is our Resource Pool for community members who would like to borrow mulchers, hoes, juicers etc. They also have set up recycling for soft plastics at Pt Chevalier Primary School, Te Ra Road - to avoid this going into landfill - as well as a social calendar, that includes local areas in the larger community. However, as an academic at Auckland University it is in the strategies as well as the processes that are enacted that Niki finds fulfilling, because she sees that there is a stirring within localised community a movement of connection happening - one that involves the neighbours like as mentioned before yet, without a capital ‘m’ but, it’s a grassroots movement all the same. It’s when we act in our daily lives, whenever we’re doing things alone or are members of organisations following an evolutionary pathway that; just as when cells come together in greater self organising numbers be it growing from clusters of cells and evolving organs to bodies right up to organisations, when we are involved be it politically or not - ‘at every single level - we are creating the world.’ Like every morning, we wake up we start creating the world - such as how we get to work, how we interrelate with our colleagues, how we relate to our children - the party we vote for, wherever or not we go out and clean the local street - all of it, is part of creating the world. So Niki is wanting to know how, in our efforts do we - become more integrated as possible - from the depths of our heart as well as acting in the political realm even at a localised level - and how do we recognise the actions that are beneficial and those that are problematic - it’s a hard task but to Niki it’s the task of being an activist. And at a collective level, she considers the conversation we need to engage in - like what are we exactly endeavouring to do or create? That most people are recognising that ‘ecological and human flourishing’ are the twin pillars that go absolutely hand in hand - so the focus is really coming back to ask - how do people work and play together in the spirit of life? Then, when she asks herself what are the key critical features to this quest? They are - individual expressions which leads to diversity, which is giving of our best selves - giving of our peak essence and the other part is ‘community and cooperation.’ Just like when seeing a forest - it will have many, many species, and be very diverse at every level of biota, yet all those species will be living and doing in a form of co-operation, whilst all their different actions work towards having all the other species flourishing as well. Each species ‘having its niche’ and fitting in. It’s all about relationship. Which leads her to explore the ‘Infinite and the Finite Games’ - as put together by philosopher James Carse. Life is comprised of at least two kinds of games. One is finite games, in which the object is to win and the other is infinite games in which the object is to keep the game in play. Finite games have boundaries, include only select players and have rules that must not change for the duration of the game. In contrast, infinite games have horizons that move as the player moves, welcome everyone into the game and the rules must change over time or the game will cease. In fact, when infinite players sense another player is about to lose, they attempt to change the rules to prevent this. Would you like to play? To look at things in another way: When parents bring children into the world, their babies are their treasures. Mum & Dad will do their utmost to make sure that their little ones are loved and cared for with totally, dedicated mindfulness. Yet, to fulfil these aspirations, in most cases they have found themselves as the proverbial ingredients in a sandwich - that to survive in our Neo Liberal economic game plan, certain sacrifices have to be made. When seen in this context - the tragedy of our time isn’t just all the damage we are doing to each other and our planet, it is that we aren’t even having much fun doing so. We’ve become stuck, too busy winning to listen to our hearts and each other. Nevertheless, today we are witnessing new ways of doing and living that are now finally being articulated from that of a perceptive, psychological understanding. It is clearly showing us positive options that enhance relationships, pull the strands of community closer and enable us to strategize a way of resolving the challenges of survival. Most of all, it is empowering us to involve ourselves into a new paradigm of ecological sustainability, peace and goodwill, and that which we at heart - all aspire to. For it is now possible for us to change. The infinite game is right here, almost within our grasp, and everyone is invited. If you want to play the infinite game or learn more go to www.infinite-game.net. If you wish to listen into an ebullient an engaging conversation of emancipative possibilities and reinvigorating your life and your community - this intelligent and encouraging discussion with Niki, may very well stimulate you to take another step further. To really let you know that within your community, there are many unique and exceptional people plus prospective friends expressing their virtues in a way that is making the world and that of our children a place where we can find happiness, security and connection. Have a listen as to how we can join the dots to a positive and fulfilling life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zExibEV_PY. Niki Harre, is an associate Dean of Sustainability from Auckland University and has been involved in innovative ways to enable people to become engaged in the process of taking care of our common future, especially from the point of view of sustainability in an ecological context and in particular that which promotes human well being . However, as an Associate Professor in Psychology - she is also very much involved in firing up one’s imagination so to enable people to realise that we can be the change in the world that we want to see. That we can shape our world in a positive way - if we all work both individually and together in community for the betterment of the whole. Her book Psychology for a better world gives us insights and encouragement to become involved in our future, both on a local and a global level. It can also be downloaded for free. https://www.psych.auckland.ac.nz/en/about/our-staff/academic-staff/niki-harre/psychologyforabetterworld.html.
