On this episode of Geektown Talks To…, Dave Elliott sits down in person with composer Fil Eisler for an eighth interview, five years after their last conversation.Fil has created the music for a huge range of film and television projects, including Revenge, Empire, UnREAL, Thunder Force and The Desperate Hour. His latest work includes Netflix's Outer Banks, CBS dramas Fire Country and Sheriff Country, and the fantasy film Momo.During the interview, Fil discusses bringing Outer Banks to an end after five seasons, how its music grew alongside the Pogues, and the unusual instrument behind one of the show's most recognisable themes. He also talks about expanding the world of Fire Country through Sheriff Country, giving the spin-off its own more acoustic identity and encouraging UK viewers to “spot the dulcimer”.The conversation also explores Fil's deeply personal connection to Momo and the creation of its end-title song, “Time Is All We Have”, with Sam Ryder. That leads to stories from a songwriting retreat near Glastonbury, rediscovering his songwriting muscles and discovering that Sam apparently possesses an inexhaustible supply of energy.Elsewhere, Fil takes us around his Los Angeles studio and its collection of guitars, vintage synths, homemade instruments and things which make strange noises when attached to large pieces of metal. There is also a detour into his years touring with Robbie Williams, why he only managed around five minutes of Netflix's Robbie documentary. Finally, Fil shares his candid thoughts on AI-generated music, why the creative process matters more than simply producing an end result, and the importance of keeping music, film and art connected to actual human beings.Visit Geektown.co.uk for the latest TV news, reviews and UK premiere dates, plus more episodes of Geektown Talks To…, Geektown Radio and Geekstorians.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. WARNING: This interview contains major spoilers for the final season and series finale of ‘The Boys'.On this episode of Geektown Talks To, Dave Elliott chats with Emmy-nominated sound effects editor and sound designer Russell Topal about bringing the gloriously violent world of ‘The Boys' to life.Russell joined the Prime Video series for Season 4 before returning for its fifth and final season, earning an Emmy nomination for his work on the series finale, ‘Blood and Bone'. He discusses the challenge of inheriting the show's established sonic identity, developing the sounds of its superpowers, and ensuring that a room full of battling Supes doesn't become one exhausting wall of noise. We also discover why Eric Kripke's notes usually involve making things wetter and more disgusting, how some very ordinary materials became some extremely unusual body parts, and which new characters gave Russell the greatest creative challenge.Away from ‘The Boys', Russell talks about working on the global phenomenon ‘KPop Demon Hunters', creating the more grounded world of the ‘Yellowstone' franchise, and offers a tantalising clue about his next project.Visit Geektown.co.uk for the latest TV, film and gaming news, interviews, UK premiere dates and more.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. This week on Geektown Talks To…, Dave Elliott sits down with Graham Yost, showrunner of Apple TV's acclaimed sci-fi drama ‘Silo'.With Season 3 approaching its finale, some of the huge questions hanging over the series are finally beginning to get answers. Graham talks about the challenge of making those answers as satisfying as the mysteries which came before them, and why Hugh Howey's original novels gave him confidence that the story could deliver on its promises. We also discuss the challenges of adapting the second novel, keeping Rebecca Ferguson's Juliette at the centre of the television series, and why memory became such an important part of Season 3.Graham also takes us behind the writing process for Season 3's two timelines, explains how the team decided where to jump between them, and reveals just how far ahead they were able to plan the show's four-season story. And, without spoiling anything, there are still some very big answers coming. Graham teases a “huge reveal” in the opening episode of Season 4 and gives us an indication of when we might finally see the concluding season.Plus, for those listening via the Geektown Radio feed, Dave has an update on when the main show will finally return after its post-Episode 500 break.Geektown Radio returns 15th September 2026.For more TV, film and gaming news, interviews and podcasts, visit Geektown.co.uk.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Geek culture got what it wanted. The stories once dismissed as disposable became global entertainment. The budgets arrived. The conventions became marketing stages. The films, shows and worlds fans fought to protect became permanent. But permanence is a strange kind of victory.Beginning in the cinema after ‘Avengers: Endgame', Dave looks back across Geekstorians Season 3 and asks what it means to live inside a culture where beloved stories are no longer allowed to disappear, but may no longer be allowed to finish either. This is not a funeral for modern geek culture, or an argument that everything was better when the room was smaller. It is about the complicated space between stories and franchises, love and infrastructure, meaningful endings and endless continuation.Because the love was real. It still is. And while the machine can use that love, it can never fully manufacture it.‘Nothing Ever Ends' is the Season 3 finale of Geekstorians, hosted by Dave Elliott from Geektown. For more TV, film and gaming news, head to Geektown.co.uk, and check out Geektown Radio wherever you get your podcasts. If you enjoy Geekstorians, leaving a rating or review genuinely helps other listeners find the show.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Why can an adaptation reproduce the characters, costumes, lore and famous moments, yet still feel completely wrong? The problem may not be fidelity, but whether the people rebuilding the story understand what is holding it together.Hollywood loves an established world. The maps already exist. The characters have names. The famous scenes are waiting. The fans are already emotionally invested. On paper, adaptation should be the safest possible form of storytelling. So why do some adaptations change enormous parts of their source and still feel completely right, while others reproduce the surface almost perfectly and somehow miss the point? In this episode of Geekstorians, Dave begins inside the screening room where HBO tested the original Game of Thrones pilot and discovered it had a very expensive problem. The world was on screen, but the audience could not see the machinery connecting it.From the pilot's reconstruction and the brutal dramatic logic of the early seasons, through the moment the television series ran beyond George R.R. Martin's published books, the episode explores what happens when an adaptation understands its load-bearing parts, and what happens when it loses the road beneath them. Then, as television launches its post-Thrones fantasy gold rush, Dave looks beyond simple arguments about “faithfulness” to examine The Witcher, The Wheel of Time, The Rings of Power, Foundation, The Boys and The Last of Us.Because adaptation is not the art of making the same thing again. It is the art of rebuilding it without bringing the roof down.Season Three of Geekstorians is The Conquest, exploring what happened when geek culture moved from the margins and became the machinery of mainstream entertainment.Spoiler warning: This episode contains major spoilers for Game of Thrones, along with discussion of storylines from The Last of Us, Foundation, The Boys and several other television adaptations.Written and presented by Dave Elliott.Geekstorians is a Geektown production. For more TV, film and gaming coverage, visit Geektown.co.uk.You can also find Geektown Radio, our weekly podcast covering the latest entertainment news, reviews and UK television premieres.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Season 2 of Geekstorians continues with the moment virtual worlds stopped being just games and started becoming laboratories. In ‘Virtual Worlds, Real Consequences', Dave looks at three very different digital worlds — World of Warcraft, EVE Online and Second Life — and the very real human behaviour they exposed once thousands of people were let loose inside them.It starts with World of Warcraft's Corrupted Blood incident, when a raid debuff escaped into the wider game and created a plague across major cities. What looked like a game bug became something stranger: an accidental model of how people behave during an epidemic, later cited in real-world pandemic research. From there, the episode moves into EVE Online, where CCP built a universe with minimal intervention and players responded by creating their own politics, economies, infiltrations, betrayals and wars. This is the world of the Guiding Hand Social Club heist, the Band of Brothers collapse, the Council of Stellar Management, and the Bloodbath of B-R5RB, a battle so vast it was covered like a real military event. Then comes Second Life, the platform that looked, for a while, like the future of the internet. A world built around ownership, virtual land, and real-money exchange, it drew in businesses, media companies and futurists who thought the metaverse had arrived. What followed was less a clean technological revolution than a reminder that the internet always brings people with it, and people tend to arrive carrying chaos. If the earlier episodes in Season 2 were about collapse, bankruptcy and institutional failure, this one is about something more revealing: what happens when designers build systems, step back, and let human beings do the rest.Geekstorians is a documentary-style podcast from Dave Elliott of Geektown, exploring the hidden history of geek culture, fandom, film, television, comics and gaming.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Season 2 of Geekstorians continues with the corporate disaster that accidentally redrew modern pop culture. In ‘The Fire Sale Blueprint', Dave looks at how Marvel's bankruptcy in the 1990s led to one of the strangest and most important chain reactions in film history. As the company collapsed under debt, many of its biggest characters were licensed or sold off in deals that looked sensible at the time and faintly insane in hindsight.Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four and others ended up in other studios' hands. What Marvel was left with looked, at the time, like the second-string cupboard. Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Panther, The Avengers. Characters with history, but not the kind of obvious Hollywood heat attached to Spider-Man or the X-Men.That bad hand turned out to be the hand that changed everything. This episode follows the path from Ronald Perelman's debt-loaded takeover of Marvel, through the bankruptcy fight involving Carl Icahn, Isaac Perlmutter and Avi Arad, to the strange reality in which the company's most famous heroes became someone else's blockbuster and the leftovers became the foundation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is also the story of how Blade, X-Men and Spider-Man proved the value of Marvel characters on screen, while Kevin Feige, Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. helped turn the characters nobody wanted into the centre of the biggest shared universe in film history. If the earlier episodes in Season 2 were about collapse and survival, this one is about something slightly stranger: how a financial disaster became a design document.Geekstorians is a documentary-style podcast from Dave Elliott of Geektown, exploring the hidden history of geek culture, fandom, film, television, comics and gaming.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Season 2 of Geekstorians continues with one of the strangest survival stories in geek culture. In ‘The Wilderness Years', Dave looks at what happened after Doctor Who disappeared from television in 1989. No big finale. No proper ending. Just a show the BBC quietly stopped making, and an audience that refused to accept that as the end of the story. This episode follows the long years when Doctor Who survived off screen through novels, audio dramas, conventions, magazines and the sort of organised fan determination Britain tends to produce whenever an institution behaves like it has misplaced its own brain. It is also the story of how the people keeping Doctor Who alive during those years turned out to be the people who would eventually bring it back. Writers such as Russell T Davies, Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and Paul Cornell all emerge from the wider culture that kept the show going while the BBC was looking the other way. From the BBC's attempts to sideline the series, to the 1996 TV movie, to Big Finish giving the Doctor a life beyond the screen, this is an episode about what happens when a show stops being just a programme and becomes something its audience is not prepared to lose.If the first two episodes of Season 2 were about collapse and near-disaster, this one is about survival through absence. About what lives on when the official version disappears.Geekstorians is a documentary-style podcast from Dave Elliott of Geektown, exploring the hidden history of geek culture, fandom, film, television, comics and gaming.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Season 2 of Geekstorians continues with a story about collapse. In ‘When Giants Fall', Dave looks at three companies that once seemed unstoppable — Atari, Sega, and Blockbuster — and how each of them, in very different ways, lost their grip on the future. From Atari's collapse after the video game crash of the early 1980s, to Sega's spectacular inability to get out of its own way during the console wars, to Blockbuster staring straight at the future and somehow deciding it probably wasn't important, this is an episode about what happens when success turns into inertia. It is also a story about what comes after.Because these collapses did not just leave wreckage behind. They reshaped the industries around them. Atari's fall cleared the way for Nintendo. Sega lost the hardware war but survived as a games company. And Blockbuster became the monument everyone points to when talking about businesses that had every chance to adapt and somehow talked themselves out of it.If last week's episode was about a film nearly vanishing, this one is about something bigger: the moment giants stop noticing the ground moving underneath them.Geekstorians is a documentary-style podcast from Dave Elliott of Geektown, exploring the hidden history of geek culture, fandom, film, television, comics and gaming. If you'd like to support Geekstorians in the Webby People's Voice Awards, you can vote here: https://wbby.co/57464NSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Season 2 of Geekstorians begins with one of the great near-disasters in modern geek history. This episode tells the story of how Toy Story 2 nearly disappeared during production, not because of a studio fight or some dramatic Hollywood scandal, but because of a routine command, a failing backup system, and the sort of technical catastrophe that still makes creative people wince. But this is not just a story about Pixar nearly losing a film.It is also the perfect starting point for a season about how geek culture survives when everything goes wrong. The glitches, collapses, bad calls, money problems and moments of blind panic behind the films, games and franchises that now feel untouchable. If Season 1 was about how fandom built itself, Season 2 is about how geek culture kept going when it should probably have fallen apart. If you'd like to support Geekstorians in the Webby People's Voice Awards, you can vote here:https://wbby.co/57464NGeekstorians is a documentary-style podcast from Dave Elliott of Geektown, exploring the hidden history of geek culture, fandom, film, television, comics and gaming.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Synopsis: As global military spending skyrockets and social programs face drastic cuts, a 50-year-old alternative emerges as a beacon of hope: the Lucas Plan, born from workers' determination to repurpose their skills for societal good.Make a tax deductible YEAR END DONATION and become a member go to LauraFlanders.org/donate. This show is made possible by you! Description [Original release date July 2025]: With the passage of the Republicans' “Big Beautiful Bill” and NATO allies pledging to more than double their spending on defense as a portion of all economic output, military spending around the world is soaring, while spending on meeting social needs and the climate crisis is on the chopping block. Governments often justify spending public money this way by saying it will create good jobs, but what if the workers themselves had a say? Fifty years ago, employees at Lucas Aerospace, a huge military contractor in the United Kingdom came up with an alternative plan. Their approach, known as the Lucas Plan, used the workers' same expertise, but directed production away from bombs, towards goods that actually help society. In this special episode, Laura heads to the UK to interview some of the original workers involved in the Lucas Plan and investigates what one senior government minister at the time called "one of the most remarkable exercises in all of British industrial history.” As she says, it's as relevant now as the day it was conceived.“What we're talking about is a poor economic choice that's being made to posture . . . and look like a big military power in a world that's growing increasingly unstable.” - Khem Rogaly“One of the things that the Lucas Plan has done is actually made it fairly clear to people that there are choices. You're given the impression that you have to make weapons. No, you don't. You're given the choice . . . The issue here is who controls technology and who should control technology, and should it be used to free people or should it be used to enslave people?” - Philip AsquithGuests:• Brian Salisbury: Former Lucas Aerospace Shop Steward• Philip Asquith: Former Lucas Aerospace Shop Steward• Hilary Wainwright: Co-Author, The Lucas Plan: A New Trade Unionism in the Making?; Co-Editor Red Pepper magazine• Khem Rogaly: Senior Research Fellow, Commonwealth; Author, A Lucas Plan for the Twenty First Century: From Asset Manager Arsenal to Green Industrial Strategy ADDITIONAL CREW: Stanley Arlidge - Episode Producer, Clementine Malpas, Tiger Nest FilmsSPECIAL THANKS: Karen Bell, Joe Guinan, Steve Schofield MUSIC CREDITS: Thrum of Soil by Blue Dot Sessions and original sound design by Jeannie Hopper RESOURCES:- Watch the episode released on YouTube July 11th 5pm ET; PBS World Channel July 13th, and on over 300 public stations across the country (check your listings, or search here via zipcode) and airing on community radio (check here to see if your station airs the show) & available as a podcast July 16th.-Related Podcast: Uncut Conversation featuring Brian Salsibury, Former Lucas Aerospace Shop Steward-Related Podcast: Uncut Conversation featuring Hilary Wainwright, Co-Author, The Lucas Plan: A New Trade Unionism in the Making?; Co-Editor Red Pepper magazineFull Episode Notes are located HERE. He's the only cinematographer to work across both current seasons, and while production is on a short Christmas hiatus, he'll be heading back to Vancouver in the new year as Season 3 continues filming. In the conversation, Jules talks about shooting fantasy in a way that feels physical and grounded, why Season 2 of Percy Jackson leaned harder into real locations and large practical builds, and how you approach sequences involving speed, water, scale and creatures that don't technically exist. He also digs into the collaborative reality of big TV productions, balancing technical precision with performance, and the problem-solving mindset needed when the camera is placed in less-than-friendly environments.Jules' previous work includes Black Sails, Ms. Marvel, See, and The Old Man — shows known for their scale, visual ambition, and the kind of challenges that keep cinematographers permanently on their toes.

Synopsis: As military spending soars, how does the Lucas Plan present an alternative model? This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to LauraFlanders.org/donateDescription: With the passage of the Republicans' “Big Beautiful Bill” and NATO allies pledging to more than double their spending on defense as a portion of all economic output, military spending around the world is soaring, while spending on meeting social needs and the climate crisis is on the chopping block. You're given the choice . . . The issue here is who controls technology and who should control technology, and should it be used to free people or should it be used to enslave people?” - Philip AsquithGuests:• Brian Salisbury: Former Lucas Aerospace Shop Steward• Philip Asquith: Former Lucas Aerospace Shop Steward• Hilary Wainwright: Co-Author, The Lucas Plan: A New Trade Unionism in the Making?; Co-Editor Red Pepper magazine• Khem Rogaly: Senior Research Fellow, Commonwealth; Author, A Lucas Plan for the Twenty First Century: From Asset Manager Arsenal to Green Industrial StrategyADDITIONAL CREW: Stanley Arlidge - Episode Producer, Clementine Malpas, Tiger Nest FilmsSPECIAL THANKS: Karen Bell, Joe Guinan, Steve Schofield MUSIC CREDITS: Thrum of Soil by Blue Dot Sessions and original sound design by Jeannie HopperRESOURCES:- Watch the episode released on YouTube July 11th 5pm ET; PBS World Channel July 13th, and on over 300 public stations across the country (check your listings, or search here via zipcode) and airing on community radio (check here to see if your station airs the show) & available as a podcast July 16th.Full Episode Notes are located HERE.
