"I'm proud that we're still here five years on and we're building momentum, but it's not going to be an overnight success. It's definitely a matter of persisting and building something for the future." This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. In this week's episode, I discussed with Dr. James Kelley the sometimes surprising effects of adversity—what James calls the "crucible's gift." Life's challenges may offer the opportunity to grow in strength and compassion, ultimately allowing us to become the person we were meant to be. James and I explored topics including: What it means to be authentic What authentic leadership is, and what inauthentic leadership looks like Helping oneself by helping others Compassion and integrity as parts of our inherent nature Reasons we hide our true selves The discomfort of vulnerability How passions are related to authenticity The connection between adversity and authenticity Seeing adversity as something that happens “for me” vs. “to me” Developing compassion through adversity Growth vs. fixed mindset Developing resilience through the experience of adversity The importance of honesty for relationships Helpful vs. unhelpful honesty How to create micro moments of meaning The ripple effects of positive interactions Why some companies foster an unhealthy and demoralizing work environment James B. Kelley, PhD, is an international leadership author, TedX speaker, culture transformation expert, and entrepreneur. He has spent the last 15 years working in various organizations across four continents. In his recent book, The Crucible’s Gift: 5 Lessons from Authentic Leaders Who Thrive in Adversity, James interviewed over 140 executives, from Fortune Two companies to entrepreneurs, to explore best practices for leading organizations. James is also the founder and owner of qChange, which specializes in creating positive nudges at the point of choice, and of the Behavioral Internet of Things company. Jon’s purpose-driven path in life is to facilitate this interconnected network. Many people lose connection with self, with other people, and with nature. Returning that connectedness through questions and answers to lead an organization toward collective wisdom. On this episode, I continue my talk with co-founder and president of the Flourishing Leadership Institute, Jon Berghoff, about the consciousness of connectedness, leading businesses toward collective wisdom and how his parenting mirrors this philosophy. Three Things We Learned Figure out how to get everyone to listen. There are 4 levels of listening: being stuck, having an open mind, being empathetic, and seeing all together as one. Business owners need to stop asking, “How do we fix a prob problem?” That question only gets us back to neutral, closing the deficit gap. Instead, focus on the question that will get you to abundance. Leaders need to have patience. The biggest barrier we see to a leader or an organization transitioning to this new approach of tapping into this collective wisdom is patience. It takes patience to figure out what the questions and wait for the answers from 900 people at one time. It’s a lot more efficient for the leaders to figure out what to do since we’re smart and we made it here. Instead of thinking of sustainability as doing less harm, let’s look at sustainability as flourishing. The highest purpose in our work is a world generations from now where all living things are thriving. Our starting point is within organizations that want to start with collective wisdom within their business.
In order for us to be good leaders, we have to tap into our emotional currency as much as we tap into our intellectual currency. How do our negative experiences in childhood and the emotions that come from them design us for our lives in leadership? How can we balance the hyper-focus between our internal selves and the outside world? On this episode, I talk with co-founder and president of the Flourishing Leadership Institute, Jon Berghoff, about overcoming childhood pain, how the seed of mentorship and coaching was planted early in his life, and the levels of leadership required to build successful organizations. Three Things We Learned How success can be a vehicle to prove ourselves Jon believes that a lot of his early success was a rebound or pendulum in response to a lot of pain in his life. A lot of the energy and motivation he had was an attempt to counter not feeling accepted, and not feeling like he was enough. What defines a good teacher Every good teacher/coach knows that the amount of wisdom in the universe is beyond what they can teach. They know that their job is to inspire the student to want to learn on their own— to instill that hunger in them. The most critical skill a leader should have As leaders, one of the most critical things we can do is to listen through the eyes and the hearts of other people. In order to do that, we must have certain emotional experiences and emotional currency. Every experience in our lives prepares us for each level, and this is especially true in leadership. As the world has become more complex, so has leadership. We may feel at times that the complexity of our world has surpassed our own capabilities, but that doesn’t mean we are useless as leaders. In those moments we need to unlock collective intuition and work on helping the people we lead to tap into their own inner wisdom and strengths.
Jon Berghoff is the founder of the Flourishing Leadership Institute and has been described as being to group experience "what Tony Robbins is to individual intelligence". In this interview we talk about: How the entrepreneur of the future will be renowned for their ability to ask powerful questions. How to use great questions to frame your mental state. What makes a good question? As well as Jon's exercise routine that combines meditation and training. How he gets a full workout with just a red band. And this surprising use for coffee that you've probably never done before. For a long time, companies were seen as machines that could be tweaked to improve their performance. However, this approach has failed to take the human element into consideration. How can we see a company as a living organism instead of a machine? Why is personal development so important? And how can we help a low-performing team grow? In this episode Jon Berghoff, the CEO of Flourishing Leadership Institute, speaks about how we can make our employees happier and more productive. The thing you miss when we treat everything like a machine is the humanity. -Jon Berghoff 3 Things We Learned From This Episode Personal development is the key to business success (03:36-05:50) Our income will never exceed our personal development. The more we work on ourselves, the higher the chances of success. Life doesn’t get easier, but our coping skills can get better. Think of your business as a living organism, (13:01-15:00) The people are the most important element of any business. Think of yours as a living organism where each part is connected and dependent on other parts. Teach your team everything you know (10:00-12:30 ) We are often impatient when it comes to reaching our goals, and sometimes we can feel slowed down by our own team. Still, in the long-term, it’s harder to do everything by yourself. Make sacrifices now and invest your time in teaching your team everything you know. It might take longer, but you won’t have to do all the work yourself in the future. It’s important for us to embrace the human element of our businesses. Investing in our team’s development can have significant returns. It’s hard to grow if there are only a few people aware of how the system works. Plus, our employees want to feel productive and valuable to the company. And the best thing we can do for ourselves and them is to share our knowledge. Guest Bio- Jon Berghoff is the co-founder of Flourishing Leadership Institute and the executive educator at Weatherhead School of Management. He previously worked as a national sales manager at Vitamix, where he had massive success, and now he uses his knowledge to teach others to become accomplished by holding the Best Year Ever events. If you have any questions, you can contact him at hello@leadflourish.com
Conversations are at the core of how we interact. We all know that conversations influence us, but we rarely stop to think about how much impact they have on our well-being and our ability to thrive. How effective would you say that you are at having conversations that significantly and positively impact the lives of the people on the other side of those conversations? Jackie Stavros is the author of Conversations Worth Having: Using Appreciative Inquiry to Fuel Productive and Meaningful Engagement, in which she teaches us how we can communicate better and flourish in all areas of our lives. When Jon Berghoff started the Flourishing Leadership Institute, he asked Dr. David Cooperrider for help. David’s response? "You need to talk to Jackie. She is a pioneer in the methodology of the work that I do." Jackie has since become a close mentor to Jon, a dear friend, and extraordinary at helping individuals and organizations to upgrade the conversations that they’re having. “Maybe in life the real risk is not taking risks.” If you’re up for a deep, intellectual conversation that gets you thinking, then you’re in for a real treat with this episode. That’s because I’m speaking with the incredible Jon Berghoff. Raised in the birthplace of Apple, Jon is a father of three and the co-founder and president of the Flourishing Leadership Institute. Jon is one of the most curious people I’ve ever met. His super smart, analytical brain is dialled into the benefit of human systems. His mind is always on because he’s constantly looking to be better. I learned so much from this episode and I’m sure you will too. Passionate about unified mindfulness (which Jon talks about in detail during this episode), Jon is fascinated with unlocking human systems to empower others to be the best they can possibly be. It’s why topics such as concentration, presence, and curiosity feature strongly - because they are keys that can unlock life. “We end up choosing work that unknowingly we’re trying to heal something from our past - we’re trying to be whole.” As well as business and personal development, Jon also talks at length and his kids. Today our expert guest is Jon Berghoff, a world-renowned experiential trainer and Co-Founder of the Flourishing Leadership Institute. I had the pleasure of meeting Jon at the Best Year Ever Blueprint Event – which he hosts with his close friend Hal Elrod, creator of The Miracle Morning – and I'm extremely grateful because both Jon and Hal have been influential in my own transformation. Jon is featured in many episodes of the Achieve Your Goals Podcast (including this excellent episode on achieving your goals in 2018, which I highly recommend checking out), but in this conversation Jon shares his journey, and the many unexpected turns he took along the way, in a way that you've never heard before. Many of us are familiar with Jon's work at Vitamix (managing U.S. sales during their growth from $40 million to $175 million) and what he's doing today with the Flourishing Leadership Institute, so we go back to find out what made him who he is today. One of the most eye-opening parts of this conversation is when Jon shares his personal strategy for attracting and cultivating relationships with the mentors that he has had. Cultivating mentors is something that we all need to actually take some ownership over, instead of just hoping that one stumbles into our lives – so we have to proactively create the conditions that will allow, and encourage, mentorship. Jon's formula can be broken down to three simple questions that you have to ask yourself: What mission am I on? What purpose is driving me? Who are the individuals that are ahead of me? Finding a mentor isn't all about you and what you get out of it – when you can align your mission with your mentor's mission, and use your skills to further that mission, “it's amazing what can happen.” The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “I think it would be an encouragement, an encouragement for people to find a way to push pause. And when I say find a way to push pause, this comes from system science... if you push pause on a machine in what's called a simple system, it stops working. What we know about a human system, or an individual, is when we push pause, it actually starts working.” "I'd encourage everybody to push pause, with the hope that in that space maybe you can become open to seeing things differently, open to appreciating people in a different way, and then ultimately open to the possibility and the potential that each of us can actually shape the future as it emerges. So, that would be my encouragement. Push Pause.” -- Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. Jon Berghoff is a world-renowned experiential trainer and co-founder of Flourishing Leadership Institute (FLI). Early entrepreneurial ventures served as a “way out” for Jon, diagnosed with ADHD and rejected from every college he applied to. Eventually, his insatiable curiosity propelled him to lead the meteoric sale growth for Vitamix Corporation, from $40 million to $175 million in just four years. Today, Jon and his team at Flourishing Leadership Institute are guided by one question: What causes the human system to come alive faster, more effectively, and more naturally than ever before? The answers might surprise you. As the founder of the Flourishing Leadership Institute, one aspect of Jon Berghoff’s job is to use visualization as a tool to create high impact solutions for organizations seeking revolutionary change. Why that is important for you today is that these same principles can be applied on an individual level to completely shift how you think about achieving success in your own life. The conversation you’re about to hear (which originally aired on Rob Dial’s MWF Motivation Podcast) is a sneak peek into just how powerful visualization can be on achieving your goals. Jon Berghoff will be teaching these visualization methodologies next month at this year’s Best Year Ever Blueprint [LIVE] experience. ''When we have purpose, we find power.'' - Jon Vroman What started as an organization to help people brave life-threatening illnesses, has grown into something much bigger than I ever imagined. If you’re brand new to the show, The Front Row Foundation is like Make-a-Wish meets Tony Robbins. We create life changing experiences for kids and adults who are fighting for their lives by putting them in the front row of their dream event. Today, we want to celebrate a major milestone! We’ve recently surpassed a decade of creating these experiences, which has resulted in over 100 magical moments for Front Row recipients! But what amazes me even more, is how this foundation has evolved over the years. It’s not just a wish organization, it’s a philosophy for life. We have built a community and culture that continues to ask the question: “how do we live every day in the front row fully engaged, closer to the things that make us come alive and make us feel like every moment of our life is meaningful?” To celebrate, I wanted to get together with some of the people who have been there from the beginning. Which brings us to today’s special conversation... In today’s roundtable discussion, 5 best friends—myself, Hal Elrod (International Bestselling Author of The Miracle Morning and #1 donor to The Front Row Foundation), Jon Berghoff (Managing Partner of the Flourishing Leadership Institute), John Ruhlin (Author of Giftology), and John Kane (Director of Sales at Cutco and first person to ever get the Front Row tatoo!)—revisit how The Front Row Foundation has brought us together and share stories of how we’ve supported each other over the years. Here’s a Quick Breakdown of Our Chat… [12:15] The power of relationships—5 best friends express their gratitude for being a part of a company culture that brought them together. [14:40] When the best things in life come from the most unexpected places—John Kane demonstrates this with one of his favorite John Ruhlin stories. [19:00] Why nobody “makes it” on their own—You’ll hear how a willingness to serve and support one another allowed 5 friends to succeed beyond their wildest dreams. [20:10] Find out what the Front Row Foundation means to each of the 5 friends and how an organization that started off as a way to help people fight life threatening illnesses, has grown into something much bigger! [23:10] An incredibly touching story of Front Row recipient Sophie and the moment she got to meet Kelly Clarkson—this story will really help you appreciate how precious life truly is! [31:36]Big lessons from The Front Row Factor: Transform Your Life with the Art of Moment Making—including how to empower your life by tapping into the past, present and future. [41:10] How a partnership was born between The Best Year Ever Blueprint and The Front Row Foundation and why it’s giving attendees a higher sense of purpose. [51:55] Why fundraising can align with the things you love to do—Learn how to give back with your time, talent and/or treasure! To manage stress, anxiety, and a "busy brain", everyone says meditation helps. You should meditate. You need to calm your brain and center. But how? Julianna Raye has been training individuals and groups in mindfulness for over 17 years. Currently, Julianna is preparing to launch the official teacher training for Unified Mindfulness - at unifiedmindfulness.com/core. She is also a founding member of the mindfulness app, Brightmind which will be available in the spring of 2017. In addition to her work for Unified Mindfulness and Brightmind, she creates onsite and online mindfulness training for enterprise clients through the Flourishing Leadership Institute. She also privately coaches executives in sales and leadership, celebrities, entrepreneurs and group trains company leaders interested in preventative health care and improving the work environment, through mindfulness meditation. Julianna delivers specific mindfulness strategies most relevant to the individual or company’s needs. Julianna was drawn to mindfulness over 20 years ago to manage severe anxiety and depression as well as the dramatic emotional ups and downs of life as a professional entertainer. With over 100 weeks of immersive silent retreat training in both mindfulness and zen, Julianna has racked up 12,000 plus hours of formal practice time, rewiring her brain and creating a new normal for herself. In a recent study at UCLA comparing long-term meditators’ brains with non-meditators, the results of Julianna’s MRI led to interviews on ABC, Globo and Reuters news outlets, about the benefits of Mindfulness practice. Unified Mindfulness, has been used in research at Harvard Medical Center (with breakthrough results) and other major research centers. In fact Julianna has just completed a mindfulness workplace research study with noted researcher David Creswell, through Carnegie Mellon. This study was a rare opportunity to design and implement a training program for a mid-size company (Fathom Digital Marketing) while having the results rigorously studied by Creswell’s lab. Very little research on mindfulness has been done in the workplace, so the amount of data collected for this study is unprecedented. Stay tuned for the results analysis which will be completed by March of 2017.
