Wystan Bryant-Scott is a Buddhist meditation teacher who has spent roughly two and half years of his life practising in an intensive residential monastic setting. He has studied under teachers in multiple Buddhist traditions, including Theravada, Vajrayana, Zen, and Dzogchen, and is a certified teacher of previous podcast guest Shinzen Young's Unified Mindfulness system. Meet Shinzen Young, a long-time instructor of mindfulness, author of The Science of Enlightenment, and now co-director of the “Science Enhanced Mindful Awareness” or “SEMA” Lab at the University of Arizona. Shinzen is Jeff's OG meditation teacher. He is both a scholar of comparative mysticism, and a highly creative designer of strange and beautiful (and practical) meditation techniques.In this episode, instead of trying to banish thoughts, we drop into a "global unfixated state," and allow creative images and words and associations to spontaneously unfold. Both Shinzen's exposition and his guided practice are quite precise – so much so that Tasha kind of bristles against them, which makes for a lively discussion afterwards. Tasshin is currently the Assistant Director at the Monastic Academy. Saying those words to 23 year old Tasshin would have made him laugh and he would have wrote them off. Why does being present mean losing oneself? On today's episode, mindfulness guru Julianna Raye shares an insightful conversation with Christopher. Learn how you can apply your attention in ways to truly make your life effective. Mindfulness and Being Present Mindfulness practice entails knowing how to apply your attention through optimal ways. Understanding where to focus one's attention alleviates even a simple headache. Opening up to the experience as it is happening will help release the pain, even if not always. It turns out, there are two ways by which you can handle pain. One is to turn towards the pain and directly work with it or to anchor away from it. And it matters to be present in the situation in order to find a way to deal with it. “I like to define what it means to be present in a way where people can actually understand how to do it—if they wanna do something.” - Julianna Raye on being present Three Skill States There are three skill states to consider to achieve mindfulness: concentration, sensory clarity, and equanimity. Julianna says that these are naturally-occurring. And they come up in life all the time, associated with the most fulfilling moments. “The key is a lot of people don't know that those heightened states—those skills—you can develop them and then they're transferrable.” - Julianna Raye On Concentration When you achieve concentration, you get to spend more time focusing on what matters to you and less time being pulled into distractions. Nobody succeeds without figuring out how concentration works. “Concentration is the ability to focus on what you choose.” - Julianna Raye Christopher says that it's interesting how you lose yourself in concentration. This means that the more present we are for us, the less alive we are. So I'm much more resilient overall. Thoughts on Breathing The breath is a place that is often a good place for people to start. In fact, at the very beginning, before I was introduced to Shinzen, breath was the first place I started. I focused on the tip of the nose, but I like to teach people how anything at all can be a focus in meditation, because that frees people up. What we want is to motivate people. We want them to get engaged in this practice. So, I like to introduce people to a technique that right off the bat shows them how they can focus on anything. As long as they're developing skills of concentration, clarity, and equanimity, they are practicing mindfulness and are getting those benefits that research has shown they can get. When I was about twelve an incident happened where these two boys decided that I had done something at a birthday party, that I had said something that got someone into trouble. They decided that I needed to be punished for that. So for a month or two after that, every time they saw me in the halls, they would kick me as hard as they could. I was terrified. I changed my pattern so that I could avoid them. I rearranged the whole pattern of where I was going. To get from class A to class B, instead of just going up the stairs, I would go down to the basement and around, so I would miss the boys kicking me. I would go to school everyday and would think about the fact that I was going to have to see these boys. I really felt terrorized by them. The day that it finally shifted, was the day that I shifted. I dropped into a natural state that shifted everything. These [mindfulness] skills are naturally occuring. We all know what it's like to be in a heightened state of mindfulness. We've all had some kind of peak experience where there's a level of clarity there. Where we're deeply absorbed, we're concentrating fully. We have a sense of harmony or we have a sense of willingness for things to be as they are and that's the overriding experience. All we're saying with mindfulness is that you can strengthen that. You can experience it with greater regularity and greater depth. Looking back on that event [with the bullies], there came this moment where I didn't run from it any more. I became willing to turn toward it and I remember vividly. I chose the route where I knew I was going to pass them because it was the shortest route to my class and I didn't want to run anymore so I started up the steps. As they were coming toward me, I saw this kid, Bert. He was gearing up to kick me as hard as he could. I found myself saying, "ok you wanna kick me? Go ahead, kick me." In that moment he was totally nonplussed. He stopped and he never did it again. It was because of the way I went into it. I just went into it with an absolute fierce willingness that I was not going to be intimidated and that I was going to stand my ground. So whatever came out of my mouth, (go ahead and kick me), that wasn't the point. The point was that I managed to fully embrace where I was at and that strength of anchoring myself in my complete willingness. It just blew him out of the water.

In a recent study at UCLA comparing long-term meditators’ brains with non-meditators, the results of Julianna’s MRI led to interviews on ABC, Globo and Reuters news outlets, about the benefits of Mindfulness practice. Unified Mindfulness, has been used in research at Harvard Medical Center (with breakthrough results) and other major research centers. In fact Julianna has just completed a mindfulness workplace research study with noted researcher David Creswell, through Carnegie Mellon. This study was a rare opportunity to design and implement a training program for a mid-size company (Fathom Digital Marketing) while having the results rigorously studied by Creswell’s lab. Very little research on mindfulness has been done in the workplace, so the amount of data collected for this study is unprecedented.
