The issue of abortion is often framed in religious terms usually by people who oppose the procedure. However, Illinois philosopher Peter Wenz says there are religious arguments in favor of abortion. His new book is called “Abortion Rights as the Free Exercise of Religion: The Constitutional Case for Choice". Wenz joins the program today.

Hi friends - John Wenz is back for another installment of Nebraska-centric weirdness. John is originally from Nebraska, and like myself, is obsessed with the state's long history or weird tales. We get into super strange UFO encounters, a famous serial killer who saw a bigfoot in the 1950's, healing machines, and a ton more. John is a great dude, and I highly recommend his beautiful zine Strange Highways. Enjoy!Love, Steve For more John Wenz: https://www.instagram.com/dumbartfinsta/https://johnwenz.square.site/?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAac10om5cj_xkZe_h6MI31yEK-sBD2A3gs_KERZecluyvpPsQGqwkfRRGgywPg_aem_X_sYv0pFiAg0FuBXY3yRtAhttps://art.johnwenz.com/?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAae_87LH5Nd83czptbOw4YTFx_GbMK4oTqiGdgYgPwRK7xygEm0SncaviWRRuw_aem_RcwQ0WNvc6DjbTcPOpk7ZwSteve Berg LInks:https://www.patreon.com/HiStrangenesslinktr.ee/stevebergPretty please subscribe and leave a review!

This interview is with Kristy Wenz. In this interview, Kristy speaks about her path to finding wine and her journey once she entered the industry. Kristy shares about her passion regarding stories and how her love for storytelling translates to her wine career. She goes on to share how she became hooked with wine early in life, but never sought out a career in the industry until later in her life. She then talks about how a trip to the Fingerlakes region of New York changed her life and shifted her thoughts regarding wine and her career. Later in the interview Kristy dives into working her first harvests and how she eventually found her way to Oregon. This interview was conducted by Rich Schmidt in the Nicholson Library at Linfield University on January 30, 2025.

Greetings, friends! This week, I have John Wenz joining me for an in-depth discussion about high strangeness in illustrious Nebraska. Beyond the flat lands, the corn fields, the ground beef-filled sandwiches, lies a state filled with extreme weirdness: UFOs, humanoid creatures, bigfoot, hoaxes, true crime and oh so much more. We barely scratched the surface of the strange and unusual in The Good Life state, so we will have to have John back for more. So, friends, I present to you, the first installment of Weird Nebraska. I hope you enjoy it!Love, SteveFor more John Wenz:https://johnwenz.com/https://www.instagram.com/dumbartfinsta/https://bsky.app/profile/johnwenz.bsky.socialssSteve Berg LInks:https://www.patreon.com/HiStrangenesslinktr.ee/stevebergPretty please subscribe and leave a review!

Kristy Wenz, a wine educator, marketer, and Cabernet Franc fiend based in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, got her start in cellars serendipitously on a family vacation in Michigan wine country. She ran her own PR firm, principally covering the construction industry, for 20 years before she moved into wine full-time. Wine Saves Lives! had the opportunity to sit down with Kristy to talk about our shared obsession with Cabernet Franc, her impressions of the wines of the Livermore Valley, and what it takes to build a successful wine brand, and her goal to live among the vineyards of Spain. Kristy Wenz, a wine educator and marketer hailing from the fighting city of Chicago — now ensconced in the beautiful Willamette Valley with her husband and children — spent some time with Wine Saves Lives! to answer the question: “What Does Cabernet Franc Mean? What does Cabernet Franc mean? To me, happiness. I mean, it is, the grape that got me into wine. It is, I shouldn't say it is, Spanish wines are what got me into like really enjoying wine to begin with. But as in terms of variety, it was Cap Branc. It was, it's just been hands down my favorite. To me, it's just, it's so food friendly. The acidity is so refreshing. It's, got those just crunchy fruits in there. And , it can be, it can be a bold structured wine or it can be a light, easy drinking wine. And there's, you know, everything in between depending on where it's come from, how it's made, takes well to oak, takes well to amphora. Like it just, it just can be such a beautifully expressed grape that it's, yeah, it's happiness to me. This is a public episode. Cynthia Wenz was a happy little girl, but when her family's life was upended, her whole sense of security unraveled. She sought love any way she could get it — leading to multiple pregnancies…and multiple abortions. Was there any hope now for a life beyond the pain, and if so, would she find it? You'll have to join us to find out, and be sure to listen again next week for Part 2 of her story, right here on UNSHACKLED! Finding herself repeating the same mistakes from her past, Cynthia wondered how she had so easily become a statistic. But a botched abortion led to one of the grandest gifts of her life, and God would call on her to educate and support women like herself. Midcentury America was governed from the center, a bipartisan consensus of politicians and public opinion that supported government spending on education, the construction of a vast network of interstate highways, healthcare for senior citizens, and environmental protection. These projects were paid for by a steeply progressive tax code, with a top tax rate at one point during the Republican Eisenhower administration of 91 percent. Today, a similar agenda of government action (and progressive taxation) would be portrayed as dangerously left wing. At the same time, radically anti-government and anti-tax opinions (with no evidence to support them) are considered part of the mainstream. In Take Back the Center, Peter Wenz makes the case for a sane, reality-based politics that reclaims the center for progressive policies. The key, he argues, is taxing the wealthy at higher rates. The tax rate for the wealthiest Americans has declined from the mid-twentieth-century high of 91 percent to a twenty-first-century low of 36 percent—even as social programs are gutted and the gap between rich and poor widens dramatically. Ever since Ronald Reagan famously declared that government was the problem and not the solution, conservatives have had an all-purpose answer to any question: smaller government and lower taxes. Wenz offers an impassioned counterargument. He explains the justice of raising the top tax rates significantly, making a case for less income inequality (and countering society's worship of the wealthy), and he offers suggestions for how to spend the increased tax revenues: K-12 education, tuition relief, transportation and energy infrastructure, and universal health care. Armed with Wenz's evidence-driven arguments, progressives can position themselves where they belong: in the mainstream of American politics and at the center of American political conversations, helping their country address a precipitous decline in equality and quality of life. Peter S. Wenz is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of Illinois at Springfield and University Scholar at the University of Illinois.
