Fresh off the sale of Mommybites, an online resource for expectant parents, Rebecca Dixon invested her background in media sales and community building in the*gameHERS, a long-overdue social-networking platform for female gamers. A lifelong fan of math, Rebecca breaks down the essential formula that inspires their crowdfund: in terms of the overall market value, gaming > 2(music + movies). We talk about how their community has grown to over 600,000 in under three years (hint: talk to them), setting an entrepreneurial example for her tween daughters, and the perplexing double standard of how moms and dads are judged as parents. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/successfully-funded/message
Heather Ouida is the Co-Founder of the*gameHERs, a women-led community dedicated to amplifying and centering the voices of women gamers and femme identifying gamers across the spectra of gender identity and expression, who are comfortable in spaces that center women.
Today on The Adrenaline Zone, Sandy and Sandra welcome Rebecca Brock Dixon, founder of the*gameHERs, a media platform and social network for women who game. In this episode, Rebecca lets us into the world of esports, what it takes to start a business, and why what she's doing with gamers is changing the sport. First up, Rebecca shares how she got into gaming herself, having started in the corporate professional world before moving into entrepreneurship and getting drawn into esports by the huge success of the gaming industry and the fact that half of gamers are women. Next, Rebecca explains exactly what esports is—professional, competitive video gaming—how it's structured and monetized, and what the experience of going to a tournament is like. She also talks about the amazing fan culture and the enthusiasm fans have for their teams and favorite players. Rebecca then focuses on the involvement of women in gaming and esports—about half of the world's three billion gamers are women—and how, despite such numbers, women gamers are often overshadowed, especially in the media and the professional side of gaming. Rebecca suggests that much of this is down to the early marketing of games as “boys' toys” and their reputation as being isolating but points out that women have always been part of the gaming world and are eager to share the great experiences they've had through it. Moreover, she highlights how games can teach valuable, transferable skills, from hand-eye coordination to teamwork, that can be used in myriad industries, including the wide variety of jobs on offer in esports. And Rebecca also discusses her company, the*gameHERs, which aims to be the go-to space for women interested in gaming, whether they're looking for community or professional opportunities. The experience at esports tournaments Women in esports Breaking down barriers and stereotypes in the gaming community Building a community for women gamers Quotes: “The statistic that everyone loves to quote is that gaming is twice the size of the movie plus the music industry. So you take movie plus music times two, gaming is still bigger than that. So I thought, wow, I kind of want to learn more about that.” “When the players arrived on stage, it was like madness. I mean, it was just complete celebrity freakout, and all the colors of each team were there, they all have cheers, it is literally like a sporting event. They all have nicknames, and they were giving the heart.” “We are sitting in a moment in time when gaming is intersecting with quite literally everything from education to health care, to the military, to kids, adults. And so, the word gaming itself, the video game industry itself, almost needs a little bit of a rebrand and PR makeover.” “Most of these women want to talk about all the great stuff, you know, how they met their best friends through video games, how they got their career through video games, how they had some serious mental health problems, and video games were a tool that they were able to use. And in fact, one of our strongest partners, one of our most long-term partners is the Center for Suicide Awareness. And one of their main tools that they use is gaming.” “Kids who play on esports teams are more likely to do a lot of the stuff I just said, like the six-figure salary right out of college, but more likely to volunteer in life and be compassionate and charitable. And you know, it makes sense. I mean, you're on a team, you're learning responsibility and disappointment and hard work.” Links: The Adrenaline Zone Homepage Rebecca's LinkedIn the*gameHERs

After selling their first company Mommybites, Heather Ouida and Laura Deutsch reunited to start a new community, one for women and femme-identified gamers. Described by Laura as “a Facebook platform for people who game,” the*gameHERs is a social and career networking app and media platform created for women by women. It not only offers female gamers a space safe from the toxicity they often experience in male-dominated gaming spaces, but celebrates them and allows them to use their voices. In founding and growing these two companies, Laura and Heather have maintained the philosophy that focusing on community organically nurtures success. By listening to and considering what female gamers actually wanted, the same community then turned up in droves to support the company that the two women created for them. On this episode of Dear FoundHer, hear Heather and Laura explain the importance of clearly identifying the problem you're solving, clearly stating your reason for creating the business (hint: it should be a lived passion), and finally just jumping right in (while leaving room to pivot). Quotes • “It is a space that brings women together in a safe way. It gives women and femme-identified gamers a voice when often they don't have one. (5:58-6:08 | Heather) • “We're all, as leaders, big fans of stepping back and listening to our community, not just saying, ‘This is what we want to do and this is why you should listen to us!' We want to hear what you want.”(25:45-25:55 | Heather) • “Our mission was to elevate women. What better way than to literally give women and femme-identified gamers, who aren't normally heard let alone celebrated, an award given by their community?” (30:00-30:14 | Heather) • “If you build it authentically, they will come. We just put our heads down. We knew loosely how we would monetize, but that wasn't our focus. If that's your focus, right from the beginning, your community senses it and you're dead before you've even started.” (31:13-31:30 | Heather) • “It's really like a Facebook platform for people who game. And it's the first of its kind.” (33:58 | Laura) • "Make sure that whatever you are starting you have a true passion for OR you are actually living it. To build something authentic you have to be authentic. You're either living it or loving it." Continuing with our discussion about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), we turn to the private schools that have also had to confront their own practices, which may have also led to institutional bias and systemic racism. Critical Race Theory has recently been a hotly debated topic in different social circles, as BIPoC communities, including children and parents, share their experiences of being marginalized in many different institutions and settings. We were joined by Verta Maloney, founder of 45 Lemons and GameHers, who is a private school parent who also provides Anti-Racist training to organizations. When we asked her what needs to happen to promote real reform and inclusiveness, she answered, "Are you willing to lose your job for it?" This is not to say that she wants people to lose their jobs but the need for reform is so dire that it requires some of us to stick out our necks to and risk possibly losing our job if we want to see real change and reform. How many professionals are willing to do that?

Heather Ouida, Laura Deutsch, Rebecca Dixon, and Verta Maloney founded the*gameHERs to give women who game a place to connect. Not one, but all four of the co-founders join Amy Jo on the show this week! Heather, Laura, Rebecca, and Verta created the*gameHERs because, when they Googled a community for female gamers, nothing came up. They saw a need in the gaming space to amplify women. Almost half of gamers identify as women, but the speaking panels at most gaming conventions are dominated by men. The co-founders tell Amy Jo they’re passionate about creating an inclusive space in gaming and business, as it’s so important that traditionally marginalized communities are represented in spaces where there is profit to be made. Heather, Laura, Rebecca, and Verta realized their work goes deeper than a service that makes life a little easier. the*gameHERs provides a community that has changed people's lives. The co-founders also talk about the*gameHERs Awards, lessons they keep learning, the ups and downs of starting a business, and building a company that feels uniquely right to you. Part 2Steven Ogg (Trevor Philips in Grand Theft Auto V)*Adult language warning in this episodeJust can't get enough?! Us either! For our very LAST episode what better way to end the season than with Part 2 of our chat with the ridiculously talented, charismatic and incredibly popular Steven Ogg. Gamers know Steven best as Simon in The Walking Dead and as Trevor Philips in Grand Theft Auto V. His character in GTA V was critically acclaimed and he received numerous award nominations as a result. His impressive resume also includes turns in The Tick, Better Call Saul and Westworld.Because this is the very last episode of the season, we mixed things up a bit. Instead of Kaili doing one of her signature interviews, she and Steven leave all their scripted notes and inhibitions aside and just talk. And laugh. And share. And reminisce. And swear (and then swear some more. You've been warned!). So you've ever wondered what it's like to be a fly on the wall when two good friends “in the biz” get caught up, now's your chance! Part two of this two-part episode coming next week!Be sure to check out Steven in:SNOWPIERCER which premiered on Sunday May 17th and airs weekly on TNT: https://www.tntdrama.com/snowpiercerAnd his new film THE SHORT HISTORY OF THE LONG ROAD coming out June 12th: The Short History of the Long RoadSteven can also be found on Instagram: @Ogg_StevenThe Let's Play Podcast is co-produced by Kaili Vernoff, Heather Ouida, Laura Deutsch, Rebecca Dixon and Verta Maloney and is proudly brought to you by www.thegamehers.com.The*gameHERs is a community where women who game connect.
