once a live dog, always a live dog The Warriors! The million-meme spawning, reality-adjacent adaptation of a 2,400 year old Greek poem, transformed into a carnivalesque vision of a New York City run by elaborately themed gangs straight out of a Lucy Sante book. Best known these days for David Patrick Kelly's “Warriors… come out to play-ay-yay” line, The Warriors feels like an elegy for something that never quite existed: an action movie with not much action, a musical that misplaced its score, a dystopia that barely redrew its map. Come listen to Adam and Aidan as they discuss this weirdo classic. Listen below or find us on your podmachine of choice.
The gangs of New York come together for a conclave, only for the charismatic leader Cyrus to be assassinated, and Coney Island's Warriors to be falsely accused. Can they make it home before the rest of the city tries to kill them? Joining us is a special guest, the writer and cartoonist Michael Kupperman, creator of Snake 'n' Bacon and author of All the Answers. Starring Michael Beck, James Remar, David Patrick Kelly, and Deborah Van Valkenburgh. Directed by Walter Hill. Written by Walter Hill and David Shaber, from Sol Yurick's novel.

When the night's quiet and you don't care anymore, come on in and stay awhile with a double feature dedicated to antiheroes looking to settle scores and perhaps stoically save their cities: Streets of Fire and The Crow. But before we get there, we work our way through a Blue Plate Special playlist of topics that has us questioning what exactly the collision between Michael Bay and Skibidi Toilet threaten to inflict upon audiences and talk about two new releases, Longlegs and Twisters. Upon finally arriving to our double feature, we find a lot to love in both films' excellent yet divergent exercises in style: listen as we discuss how Walter Hill's 1984 rock and roll fable fits into his larger cinematic oeuvre while celebrating and memorializing the late great star turn of Brandon Lee in Alex Proyas's 1994 gothic epic. The amazingly talented star of stage (Hair, Broadway Bounty Hunter, Into the Woods) and screen (Miami Vice, Cheers, Orange is the New Black), Annie Golden, blows our minds with her stories! Annie talks about how singing with her band, The Shirts at CBGB's in the 70s, led to her being discovered by Miloš Forman, who cast her in Hair. This launched a career on Broadway and a solo singing career which led to her having a song (“Hang Up the Phone”) featured on the Sixteen Candles soundtrack. From there, she pivoted to the small and big screens with roles in 80s classics like Baby Boom, Cheers, and Desperately Seeking Susan. She has most recently been in Orange is the New Black as the lovable mute, Norma Romano and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as Marge. She was also the special guest of Phish's most recent NYE performance at Madison Square Garden. We were thrilled to have her join us. When someone makes a list of the best 90s movies, this week's movie is usually on the list. I bring you my review of classic, The Crow. The Crow was Brandon Lee's final film. He sadly was accidentally killed on the set of The Crow. He was famously precluded in death by his father Bruce Lee, who also died far too early in life. We still got a masterful performance by Brandon Lee as Eric Draven, who comes back from the dead to avenge his, and his fiancée's, murder. He goes up against some slimy baddies led by the murderous and twisted Michael Wincott as Top Dollar. He gets help from a cop played by Ernie Hudson and his friend Sarah played by Rochelle Davis. The action, the drama, the tension is all accompanied by a edgy, hard-hitting lineup of tracks that enhance it all. Join me to do a deep dive on this dark classic. The Crow also stars David Patrick Kelly, Jon Polito, Bai Ling, Tony Todd, Sofia Shinas, Anna Thomson, Angel David, Laurence Mason, Michael Massee, Bill Raymond, Marco Rodriguez and Kim Sykes. This week on the Everything Actioncast, Zach and Chris bop their way back to 1979 to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Walter Hill's cult classic, The Warriors, which debuted on February 9th, 1979.The titular Warriors are a gang from Coney Island who attend a massive meeting of almost every other gang in New York City to hear a plan from the leader of the city's most powerful gang, Cyrus (Roger Hill). Cyrus proposes that the gangs stop fighting each other and join forces, as their combined numbers surpass the police and they could own the city. Everyone is on board except the weaselly and insane leader of the Rogues, Luther (David Patrick Kelly), who kills Cyrus with a gun and then blames The Warriors for the act. The Warriors then have to fight their way from the Bronx back to the safety of Coney Island with every gang and the cops on their heels.Zach and Chris discuss the literary and historical source material of the movie, the actual logistics of navigating around the city by subway, some of the most memorable gangs, how the movie's impact is still felt to this day, and more.We want to hear your comments and feedback. In this episode, I'm going Commando. The 1985 Arnold Schwarzenegger classic bullets and bodies action extravaganza, that is! I'm going retro this week since there's nothing good enough at the theaters to review for my beloved movie maniacs and fellow freedom-fueled film fanatics. Commando is about ex-Special Forces soldier John Matrix trying to save his daughter after she's kidnapped to force him to assassinate a president. Matrix escapes the baddies tasked with escorting him to the country to kill the president, and the action blows up from there. He's joined by Rae Dawn Chong, as Cindy, who involuntarily at first, becomes his valuable ally. Will he get his daughter, played by Alyssa Milano, back in time? Of course he will! Commando also stars the late great Bill Paxton in a small role, Dan Hedaya, Vernon Wells, David Patrick Kelly, James Olson, Bill Duke, Drew Snyder, Sharon Wyatt, Michael DeLano and Bob Minor. Next, we talk about the incredible ensemble that brings Lynch's romance to life, praising especially the brilliance of its leads Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern as well as supporting performers like Diane Ladd (Laura Dern's real life mother, who netted an Oscar nod for her work in the film) and Willem Dafoe as one of Lynch's most memorable villains. David Patrick Kelly's training journey - which he considers to be still ongoing - was of the “school of hard knocks” variety - his words. He considered going to Juilliard but couldn't afford it. So he deliberately set out to cobble together a kind of do it yourself conservatory experience. That journey would take him to Paris where he trained with Marcel Marceau and back to America where he would find his way into the avant-garde theater of Richard Foreman, Hollywood action movies like The Warriors, 48 Hours, Last Man Standing, and the strange world of David Lynch's Twin Peaks. He studied with the legendary Russian, Mira Rostova, who famously coached Montgomery Clift. David also asked for - and got - on set tutorials from Christopher Plummer, Max Von Sydow and Chris Walken, in-between takes on the movie sets they shared. Not bad. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/storyofacting/message
Get ready for another episode of "Thirsty for More" with your hosts, the charismatic duo Aleks and Milenko. Continuing their Planet Bruce season, the brothers delve into the filmography of the iconic Bruce Willis. In this episode, they take on the enigmatic Last Man Standing, a movie that had all the potential to be great but sadly missed the mark. With a sense of anticipation, Aleks and Milenko approached Last Man Standing, hoping for an enjoyable experience. After all, it boasted an impressive cast and was directed by the legendary Walter Hill. What's more, it was a western remake of Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo, which added an intriguing layer to the film's premise. The cast alone was a star-studded lineup, featuring the likes of Bruce Dern, William Sanderson, Christopher Walken, David Patrick Kelly, Karina Lombard, Ned Eisenberg, Michael Imperioli, and Patrick Kilpatrick. It seemed like a winning combination. However, as the brothers soon discovered, Last Man Standing fell short of expectations. The film suffered from pacing and storytelling issues, failing to fully capitalize on the talents of its remarkable cast. It was a disappointing experience that left Aleks and Milenko feeling somewhat disheartened. Yet, true to their commitment to exploring both the good and the bad, they wade through the depths of Last Man Standing, unraveling its flaws and dissecting its missed opportunities.Though the movie itself may have been a letdown, fear not, for "Thirsty for More" remains a captivating and engaging podcast. Join Aleks and Milenko as they candidly share their thoughts, providing insightful commentary on Last Man Standing. From analyzing the pacing problems to discussing the underutilization of talented actors, the brothers leave no stone unturned in their quest for cinematic analysis. While Last Man Standing may not have lived up to its potential, the episode promises to be an entertaining and thought-provoking exploration of what went wrong. So grab your popcorn and tune in as Aleks and Milenko navigate the highs and lows of this ill-fated Western remake. Prepare to laugh, groan, and engage in lively discussion as they tackle the good, the bad, and everything in between.Don't miss out on this candid and honest episode of "Thirsty for More" as the brothers deliver their unique brand of movie analysis, shedding light on the highs and lows of Last Man Standing.Instagram: @thirstyformorepresentsTwitter: @morethirstyJoin us on Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/thirstyformoreand YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUyVV223fWcNenwcwugHfmA

Jason Teasley and Mark Radulich present their 48 Hours/Another 48 Hours Movie Review. 48 Hrs. (pronounced 'forty-eight hours') is a 1982 American buddy cop action comedy film directed and co-written by Walter Hill, co-written by Larry Gross, Steven E. de Souza and Roger Spottiswoode, and starring Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy (in his film debut) as a cop and a convict, respectively, who team up to catch two hardened criminals. The title refers to the amount of time they have to solve the crime.Though it is predated by Richard Rush's Freebie and the Bean, the film is often credited as being the first in the "buddy cop" genre, later popularized by films such as Lethal Weapon, Bad Boys and Rush Hour. 48 Hrs. was Joel Silver's first title as a producer. Its supporting cast features Annette O'Toole, James Remar, Frank McRae, David Patrick Kelly, Sonny Landham, Jonathan Banks and Brion James. The musical score was composed by James Horner.Released by Paramount Pictures on December 8, 1982, 48 Hrs. was one of the most commercially successful films of 1982, and it received widespread acclaim from critics. It launched Murphy's film career, and earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination for New Star of the Year – Actor. A sequel, Another 48 Hrs., was released in 1990, also directed by Walter Hill, with Nolte and Murphy reprising their roles.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsosnapchat: markkind76FB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulich

1985 is the summer that kicked off the box office rivalry between action powerhouses Slyvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Stallone had Rambo: First Blood Part 2 and Arnold had the fun version of that movie, Commando!Commando costars Rae Dawn Chong, Alyssa Milano, David Patrick Kelly, Bill Duke, and a very odd Dan Hedaya accent. This was a movie Mike loved to the point that a grease painted Arnold poster for this movie on his bedroom wall. To be fair, he also had an oily Stallone for First Blood Part 2 and a matchstick chomping Stallone Cobra on his walls too. Will Allyson embrace the cheesy 80s over the top action as much as Mike did? What do you think of Commando? (pronounced 'forty-eight hours') is a 1982 American buddy cop action-comedy film directed by Walter Hill, who co-wrote the film with Larry Gross, Steven E. de Souza and Roger Spottiswoode. It stars Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy, the latter in his film debut, as a cop and a convict, respectively, who team up to catch two hardened criminals. The title refers to the amount of time they have to solve the crime.Though it is predated by Richard Rush's Freebie and the Bean, the film is often credited as being the first in the "buddy cop" genre including Lethal Weapon, Bad Boys and Rush Hour. 48 Hrs. was Joel Silver's first title as a producer. Its supporting cast features Annette O'Toole, James Remar, Frank McRae, David Patrick Kelly, Sonny Landham, Jonathan Banks and Brion James. The musical score was composed by James Horner.Released by Paramount Pictures on December 8, 1982, 48 Hrs. was one of the commercially-successful films of 1982,[3] and received widespread acclaim from critics. It launched Murphy's film career, and earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination for New Star of the Year – Actor. A sequel, Another 48 Hrs., was released in 1990, also directed by Walter Hill, with Nolte and Murphy reprising their roles.
As one of the world's most dynamic and recognised celebrity icons, Eddie Murphy has been present in comedy and music for the last five decades and has dominated our big screens since his debut feature film, action comedy, 48hrs. some forty years ago. Delivered from a never-seen-before viewpoint, ‘Eddie Murphy; Deliriously Funny' is an immersive account of Murphy's entire comedy genius that spans the highs and lows of his career, touching on his childhood, exploring his influences, his stand-up comedy roots, music and film. From the author of ‘Rik Mayall: Comedy Genius' and ‘Al Pacino: The Movies Behind The Man', Mark Searby intricately unravels the golden thread of comedy that has weaved through the fabric of Murphy's life and career, in both film and music, and exposes the deeper catalysts behind it.Taking us on a profound journey that outlines Murphy's life, Searby creates an honest account that is charged with the excitement, frustration, confidence and fearlessness that Murphy has experienced and delivered throughout his work. Documenting the incredible highs, and the equally spectacular lows, ‘Eddie Murphy; Deliriously Funny' includes exclusive interviews and quotes from those that have worked closest to him. Highlighting his breakthrough on mainstream TV via Saturday Night Live, through to multimillion-dollar box office smashes of his most famed and successful films; 48 Hrs., Beverly Hills Cop, Coming To America, Harlem Nights, Boomerang, The Nutty Professor, Shrek, Dreamgirls, Norbit and Dr. Dolittle, Searby also delves in to the career flops that span comedy sketches and numerous big screen films, and ultimately how Murphy used them on one of the most amazing rides through Hollywood.Packed with excerpts and interviews with the likes of Reginald Hudlin (Boomerang), Katt Williams (Norbit), Keith Robinson (Dreamgirls), David Patrick Kelly (48 Hrs.), Steven Berkoff (Beverly Hills Cop) and more, not only does the book celebrate Murphy's career but it also gives insight to the person behind it. Featured heavily throughout the book are the deeper topics that have ultimately fuelled Murphy's passion for comedy. Exploring his ability to use comedy as a vehicle to “put racism and sexism front and centre throughout”, Searby delves into the vast pool of examples that find “In amongst all of the hilarious comedy routines Murphy was creating, there were moments that spoke honestly and directly about racism.”Told with an air of wit that captures Murphy's inspiring outlook on life, the book is not a gossip frenzied account of his personal life but a testament to the career and his doggedly determined, confident traits that has allowed it to span half a century. From influences that went before, such as Richard Pryor, Nipsey Russell, Moms Mabley and even Elvis Presley and Bruce Lee, Eddie Murphy became the biggest influence in the world, non more so than with aspiring Black comics.“A pioneer of a new form of much- loved entertainment that was speaking to an entirely new Black generation. It featured a combative edge, an edge that put racism and sexism front and centre throughout. They wouldn't shut up or back down when discussing the topics that mattered most to them. This was their time to speak and they were not going to let anyone off the hook. Eddie Murphy was doing that with his stand-up to a huge audience – Black and white.”As with his previous work, Searby masters his subject and highlights how, no matter whether you are an avid fan or not, Eddie Murphy will have touched your life at some point in time. Whether it be through music, through comedy, through the voice of a donkey or adult humour, his reign as one of the world's most iconic inhabitants is undeniable and ‘Eddie Murphy; Deliriously Funny' is a captivating insight into his legacy.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/writers-on-film.
