For a bonus episode this week, Emilio goes solo for a (mostly) spoiler free talk about a film he really loves, Ang Lee's "The Wedding Banquet". It was a successful and critically acclaimed independent film back when it was released in 1993, but has mostly stayed relevant as its esteemed director's international breakthrough. Yet it's a timeless film full of humor, compassion, and reflections on what we sacrifice of ourselves due to societal forces and the expectations of our families. Its enduring place in cinema history is evidenced by it being reimagined by writer/director Andrew Ahn - this remake can currently be seen in theaters nationwide. Emilio gets into what he enjoys so much about the original, shares his thoughts on the remake and how it is distinct from the original, and speaks with Professor Zhen Zhang, an NYU film professor who shared this film with him in an undergraduate seminar, about Ang Lee's original film. Professor Zhen Zhang is a film professor at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and the Director of the Tisch's Asian Film and Media Initiative. She has a decades long, decorated career in academia that also includes guest-curating film programs for the Film Society at Lincoln Center of Performing Arts, Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Women Make Waves Film Festival in Taipei. If you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice. This week we're taking a look at two films from Gregg Araki. One of the architects of the New Queer Cinema movement of the 1990's, Araki pivoted in the new century after finding critical success with Mysterious Skin. He followed up that award winner by pivoting to a stoner comedy that Max argues is worth revisiting every April 20. Say Hi!
That train keeps chugging and by pure accidental bliss, we have another film up here with some stark similarities! Would I go on to say this film is "controversial"? Probably. We have some issues with it. As you'll gather, we don't talk about the film much but rather the way the film was made. There's some questionable behavior happening here, and we're not a podcast to let that slide. The two leads however, Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos are exceptional. Honestly, they knock this film out of the park with the rather mediocre material they are given. It's a disappointing shame as this was adapted from the equally exceptional graphic novel by Jul Maroh. This is mostly Ryan's opinion here, Laura thinks the film is pretty good despite our universal disapproval of the off-camera shenanigans. It's just the Director who needs to take a little look in the mirror honestly if any of these allegations are true. Let's hope not dude, because that's kinda messed up!
June has rolled 'round and you know what that means?! It's Pride and we get to cover some LGBTQ+ films. This time, we're dipping into Gay Cinema with one of the best examples of the category. Number 22 in the BFI best LGBT film of all time is Alain Guiraudie's STRANGER BY THE LAKE. A masterful and nuanced take on the mystery genre, this minimalist, intimate, and insular film focuses on the shenanigans of a popular cruising area by the lake and the craziness that ensues over a collection of days. There's plenty to enjoy here as you will tell quite quickly, we didn't even note down time codes for this one; there's almost 90% un-coverage. It would be 100% if it weren't for shots like the car pulling into the parking lot and people talking (with their clothes on).

Rebels! Welcome to the Pride Rewind! Nothing makes more sense than to revisit the one degree of separation between the rebel camp, and Charlie David, than a movie so terrible, it changed the way we recorded. Within 10 minutes of watching this film I could quote it by heart. It has been at least 10 years since I've seen it and it still has the same effect all these years later.

Storytelling (on film) occurs in three stages: on paper (writing), on sets (direction) and in the editing room. Apurva Asrani has had the experience of wearing all three hats. He’s been an integral part of some of the finest Hindi films in the last 20 years. Spoke with Asrani about his experiences working with RGV, Kalpana Lajmi, Hansal Mehta and Nagesh Kukunoor; his role in persuading RGV to switch from Steenbeck to Avid; the personally cathartic experience of writing ALIGARH; Indian queer cinema; and struggles of gay men in India.Asrani was articulate and insightful with his responses, and bared his soul on several issues he holds close to his heart. I greatly appreciated that. I think you’ll too. Part 2 of my conversation with Apurva Asrani. We celebrate the recent birthday of gay rights icon, Harvey Milk by dedicating this month's Rainbow Rewind to the Sean Penn lead film, Milk. Travel back to 1970's San Fransisco with us and hear our thoughts on this inspirational biopic.
This episode promises to be our most fetch episode yet! This month on The Rainbow Rewind, we are talking about "Mean Girls". Not an intentional queer film, but one that has truly engrained itself into queer culture.
How many films does it take for Spielberg to get a queer character right? Should Lois Smith cameo in every film? Can we dig our way out from under the weight of too many licensing opportunities? These answers and more on this week's episode of A Piece of Pie: The Queer Film Podcast. (With special guest Max Bever)
