On this week's episode, the panel is first joined by Slate's music critic, Carl Wilson, to puzzle over The Tortured Poets Department, Taylor Swift's much-anticipated 11th studio album. Stuffed with 31 tracks, the two-part album is a departure from the billionaire pop star's otherwise perfectly crafted oeuvre: it's messy and drippy, and at times, manic and frenetic. Is this secretly a cry for help? And more importantly, when did she find the time to record this thing? Then, the three explore Fallout, a post-apocalyptic drama series adapted from the extremely popular role-playing video game of the same name. Executive produced by Jonathan Nolan (Westworld, Person of Interest) and streaming on Prime Video, Fallout certainly achieves a high level of immersive world-building, but do the stories and characters fare the same? Finally, Becca Rothfeld, the Washington Post's non-fiction book critic, joins to discuss her triumphant first book, All Things Are Too Small: Essays in Praise of Excess, in which she rebukes the culture's affinity for minimalism and makes the case for living in a maximalist world.  In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, it's part two of the Ambition versus Contentment discussion (courtesy of a listener question from Gretel): How should a parent approach cultivating ambition in a child, if at all? The hosts discuss.  Email us at culturefest@slate.com.  Outro music: "Ruins (Instrumental Version)" by Origo Endorsements: Dana: The Teacher's Lounge, a film by German-Turkish director Ilker Çatak. The German-Swiss duo with the unlikely name of Grandbrothers draws on electronic dance music, ambient music, and minimalism. Their tag line is “messing around with grand pianos since 2012,” which captures the essence of their play: they use ALL parts of the piano to generate raw sounds –the notes of the keyboard but also striking the wooden case; or flossing, well, bowing the strings; and E-Bow-like contraptions that oscillate the strings – which are sampled, processed, and assembled in real time. The results are striking creations that are not out of place in either a cathedral or a dance club. Their latest record is Late Reflections, and it brings Grandbrothers, who are the Swiss engineer/mechanic/software designer Lukas Vogel and German-Turkish pianist Erol Sarp, to play in the studio on the occasion of their first U.S. tour. With Turkey escalating its provocations against Greece in the Aegean, we saw Germany once again - at least initially - call on “both sides” to reduce tensions. Following a reaction in Athens at this perceived neutrality, Germany's government firmed up its stance and called Turkey's overflights above Greek islands unacceptable. Xenia Kounalaki, a journalist and the foreign editor at Kathimerini, joins Thanos Davelis to look at Berlin's long-standing policy of “equal distances” between Greece and Turkey, and explore whether Germany's latest call on Turkey to refrain from provoking Greece marks a more substantive shift in this policy. Read Xenia Kounalaki's latest analysis in Kathimerini: On the German-Turkish relationship (In Greek)You can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:Berlin changes course over Turkey threatsGermany's Scholz to visit Thessaloniki on June 10EU to send more than 200 firefighters to Greece for the summer seasonRussia urges Turkey not to launch offensive in northern SyriaErdogan announces military operations in Syria's Manbij, Tal Rifaat

We talk about how to self advocate, how to negotiate, how knowing your value has a direct impact on the price you place on your work. We talk about allies and creating strong networks. We talk about the role that art generally and music more specifically plays in society - how do we quantify the value of music, not the person making the music but the music itself? In Germany, beginning in the 1960s, a major population shift took place. The reason for it was the German guest worker program. Due to the German ‘economic miracle,’ the country was in growing need of cheap labor, and it found it in places like Turkey. Although it was assumed that these ‘guests’ would later on move back to their home countries, they unexpectedly often stayed in Germany, founded families and became Germans. Reading works from Aysel Özakın, Emine Sevgi Özdamar and Aslı Erdoğan, she places particular emphasis on the female perspective.
