Mike Gonzales is the drummer for Kill Tony Band. He has played with Keith Urban, Gary Clark Jr, The Peterson Bro's, Gina Chavez, Charley Crockett and many more. In this episode we learn that Mike got what many would call a "late start". He pursues his passion with unparalleled work ethic (we get in to the details of what that looks like). He tells many rad stories and is one of the hardest workers in every room -- who does so with humility. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about Mike. His journey will continue to be one to want to support and stay tuned in to. Our path to the Convention is a time of grace to live our charism with greater coherence and authenticity, to walk together in our conformation with Christ as a spiritual family and apostolic body, and to renew our mission to pray. Developments in the Uvalde school massacre: Conflicting and still-unclear reporting seems to show that school security and responding law enforcement barricaded the shooter inside a fourth grade classroom for as long as 40 minutes, during which most of the killings took place. The shooter is believed to have bought his two AR platform guns just after his 18th birthday and just days prior to the shooting. Governor Greg Abbott offers no specific solutions, saying new gun restrictions are "not a real solution" and that the assault that killed 19 children and two adults "could have been worse". "Red Flag" laws are being mulled as a potential way to curb access to guns by criminals or people experiencing mental issues. In addition to crowdfunding and blood donations, legal services are needed by the families of the victims - attorneys are implored to volunteer. Meanwhile, protests are expected at Friday's NRA event in Houston. The Uvalde event is the deadliest school shooting in state history, and Texas is now an national outlier for mass shootings, with five of the ten deadliest - four in schools - having occurred within our borders. Austin ISD is responding with a buildup of security at its campuses. New details in the Anna Moriah Wilson murder case indicate that Austin Police had arrested the suspect, Kaitlin Marie Armstrong, days prior to a warrant for murder being issued. Armstrong was released, however, because her date of birth on record did not match the date of birth on the warrant. Armstrong remains at large and is now believed to have traveled to New York City. Yelp has revealed its Top 100 Places To Eat In Texas list, and 18 establishments in Austin and the surrounding area made the cut, including #1 Paper Route Bakery. Speaking of lists, Austin has made high marks on two new ones: we've been named the 16th most bike-friendly city in America, as well as the nation's best place for new college grads to find first jobs. Gina Chavez is an American bilingual Latin-folk singer, and songwriter who has been performing since 2004, releasing her first recording in 2007. She's made her presence known with her work in El Salvador, being named one of 11 southern iconic women who have left a beautiful footprint across the south. Her work in El Salvador continues to make a worldwide difference outside of music. Gina shares her story, her journey, and how she had to overcome playing small to get to where she is today. She also shares the beautiful relationship she shares with her wife, and how they first found out that they both loved each other. Key Takeaways How did Gina get her start in the music industry? Gina is currently undergoing her biggest rebirth journey to date. Have you ever thought, “If I could just get out of my own way.”? Gina doesn’t have a regular ‘creative song writing’ practice. “It’s not feminine to be loud and take up space.” That’s what our society teaches us. These rules are universal no matter what culture you’re from. What was it like to be nominated for a Latin Grammy? Gina shares what it was like leaving the US for the very first time to study abroad. Both Gina and JR talk about the insecurities they’ve felt when speaking Spanish. Gina shares how she found her voice. Music saves so many people’s lives. Music brings community, connection, and healing. Gina wants to crawl in a hole when someone wants her to step into her greatness. She doesn’t want to do it. Gina shares the unexpected story of how she fell in love with a woman, who is now her wife, and how she had to reexamine her religion. Gina cried for a whole year and prayed to God as to why she was this way. Gina shares the story of how she first came out as gay to her wife. What is Gina currently up to right now? (See videos of Jimmy here) The last few years we’ve been in the studio with Jimmy, recording a cut with him on his Jackson Browne Tribute album, and two songs on his most recent album release. Back in the 80’s my high school best friend and I would take our strings downtown and sit in at the Chicago House open mike frequently hosted by Jimmy Lafave. Years later I ran into Jimmy at a live KGSR radio tribute to Bob Dylan; from that radio show the first season of Strings Attached was born. Here are a few songs I arranged for that first show back in 2001:Never is a MomentWhen It Starts to Rain (KUT Radio Appearance)Jimmy LaFave was born in Wills Point, Texas, a small town 30 miles east of Dallas. He began school down the road in Mesquite and by Junior High was making music perched behind his Sears & Roebuck drum kit. It wasn’t long before his mother traded a drawer full of green stamps for his first guitar and the switch to singer–songwriter was in progress. His family later moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma, where he finished high school. Although he has lived in Austin for over 20 years, many people think of him as being from Oklahoma, because of his strong musical ties to the state and what he often refers to as its “red dirt music.” It was in this landscape that he began to define his sound and soak up a combination of his experiences among authentic songwriters from the tradition of Woody Guthrie. Before leaving Oklahoma for Austin, Jimmy did some independent recording and toured the southwest with the first version of his band Night Tribe.
