The Christmas season is upon us! We look to the manger and we see new life—a baby has been born, Jesus the Christ, and so we have reason to hope. God has once more broken into our human story with an invitation: Can we go to the others, bringing the joy and wonder of the Incarnate Christ? Christmas is rightly a time for joy and celebration. But it's also a time to take a hard, loving look at our world—the very world through which God again and again makes Godself known. So here's a question and a challenge: Are we romanticizing that nativity scene? Are we placing the Holy Family high upon a pedestal without looking plainly at the hardship and struggle they themselves had to bear? We're so quick to sing about Mary and Joseph finding no room at the inn and yet, do we respond in hospitality to those left out in the cold? Long time listeners of our podcast have heard our crossover episodes of the Jesuit Border Podcast before. Fr. Brian Strassburger, SJ, is the director of Del Camino Jesuit Border Ministries, located in the diocese of Brownsville, Texas. Along with Joe Nolla—a Jesuit regent—he's wrapped the seventh season of the Jesuit Border Podcast. Today, we're going to share with you the season finale, which features Bishop Joseph Tyson of the diocese of Yakima, Washington. This conversation is a helpful one during this Christmas season. In this podcast episode I discuss how our way of believing we're doing right by others is actually disobeying God and harming ourselves. Tune in to hear more about how people pleasing is self sabotaging and creates bigger issues than we realize. What would entering the Ark of the Covenant look like? What would be required of us to take those remarkable few steps into Heaven? First, we must believe it is possible, and that we can listen to the Voice for God in the Holy Spirit to guide us and lead us there. Then we have to completely forgive ourselves and our brother, yes our brother, for everything we "thought occurred, but did not." We don't see errors in him, nor in ourselves, that are part of our true Self as God Created us to be. Not one error has any consequences in the reality of this joining with our brother, in seeing "the Christ in Him." In this Holy Vision we see all things, especially all people, in the purity of their God Self. Why would we not want to have this boon from the Christ, as "students" of A Course in Miracles? Accepting fully the Atonement for ourselves, we would have to extend it to our brother as well. And if we can do this with one brother, we can transfer this miracle of the Atonement to all brothers. Then we not only "enter the ark" two by two, but bring everyone else into this Heaven as well, along with us.

Our inherent nature is pure love. This divine Eros manifests as love of Beauty, love of Goodness, love of Truth, and love of the Infinite Mystery of the God-Self. But to return to the innocence of divine love, we must transcend the ego's demonic love of money, fame, domination, and self-deception. Only once our ego defenses have been demolished through surrender of weaponized thought, can the Heart open to the flood of divine love that has been dammed up within.

You are in nonduality right now, but your mental activity obscures the Real. In the Judeo-Christian tradition, God often makes Godself known through sound: be it a voice from a burning bush, a resounding clap of thunder or the blast of a trumpet. “God is revealed through sound,” affirms Ed Foley, O.F.M. Cap. “I think of a homily as sound theology,” he adds, “it's acoustic engagement.” When preparing to preach, Ed, the Duns Scotus Professor Emeritus of Spirituality and a retired professor from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, first writes his homilies word for word in poetic form. Then, he meticulously annotates his manuscript, like a conductor's score. “Where's the crescendo?” he asks himself. “Where's the pause? When do the trumpets come in?” Practice extends beyond the art of the homily, permeating life itself. It is, perhaps, a vital Christian practice as we enter the Easter season of Christ's resurrection. “The followers of Jesus practiced resurrection,” Ed says in his homily on “Preach” for the Mass of the Day this Easter Sunday. “Their dogged commitment to living an Easter spirituality and pass it on from one generation to the next, usually at great cost, is why we stand missioned to practice resurrection again today,”  But, even though prudent preparation is necessary, there must always be enough room to veer from the script when you're standing in front of a congregation. “Improvisation is not shooting from the hip. We learned this from people, from standup comics, improvisation is taking what somebody gives you and doing something with it. This past weekend, we celebrated the Feast of the Epiphany, when the three magi followed yonder star to God's perfect light (to paraphrase the old song). By gazing at the stars, people from near and far we're drawn to Christ—a reminder that, woven into the very fabric of the universe, God reveals Godself, guiding us deeper into God's mystery and an encounter with Christ. What was true more than 2,000 years ago remains true today. Stars, meteorites, planets, the mysteries of space still speak to us of God and God's dream for creation. And the Society of Jesus continues to be on the forefront of discerning God in the stars. More than 30 asteroids have been named for Jesuits. There are a similar number of craters on the moon bearing Jesuit names. And based on the work of today's guest, it's entirely possible that the Society of Jesus might find itself with a few more astral namesakes in the not-so-distant future. Br. Bob Macke, SJ, is one of the world's foremost experts in the study of meteorites. And his work has been instrumental in OSIRIS-REx mission, a recent NASA mission that might reveal new insight into the earliest moments of the solar system. Today, he talks to us about his work, his vocation and what he hopes to learn as he continues to comb through space—that final frontier. Br. Bob studied physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Washington University in St. Louis, before entering the Society of Jesus in 2001. Between 2011 and 2013 he studied theology at Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, during which time he also constructed a new ideal-gas pycnometer for measuring meteorite densities. Br. Macke joined the Vatican Observatory in July 2013, where he studies meteorite physical properties in the observatory's meteorite laboratory. In August 2014, Br. Macke became the curator of the Vatican collection of 1200 meteorite specimens.
