In Part 1 of this week's Next on the Tee, I'm joined by two of the most legendary PGA Professionals the game has ever known—quite possibly ranked 1 and 1A on that list. First up is PGA Professional Hall of Famer Bob Ford. Bob's accolades span across four Hall of Fames, the prestigious William D. Richardson Award from the Golf Writers Association of America, and the Bobby Jones Award—one of the highest honors in the game. He's served as Head Professional at both Oakmont and Seminole, and his coaching tree reaches wider than any in history. If you've watched the U.S. Open over the past decade, you've likely heard his voice—he's been the official Starter since 2017 and will continue as long as he wants the job. Bob shares his insights on this year's Masters, what to expect from the U.S. Open's return to Oakmont, and, as a proud Yinzer, throws in some thoughts on the Steelers. Then, I'm honored to welcome another giant in the game—Suzy Whaley. A Hall of Famer in her own right, Suzy was the first female President of the PGA of America, is a Golf Magazine Top 100 Instructor, and currently preparing to Captain the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team. She was also recently on the bag for her niece, Phoebe Brinker, at the Augusta National Women's Amateur. Suzy reflects on that experience, discusses the potential for a Women's Masters Tournament, and we explore a few exciting job opportunities where her leadership would be a perfect fit. Don't miss this conversation with two all-time greats.

Winning is a big deal to kids – whether it's on the soccer field or racing their sibling to the car door. And with big competition comes big emotions. So how best to navigate when your child loses – or wins for that matter? Sam Weinman, author of “Win at Losing: How Our Biggest Setbacks Can Lead to Our Greatest Gains” joins Lynn and Justin with practical, healthy strategies for parents to help their little ones deal with competition. Tools that we can all use from the toddler years into adulthood. In our Parenting Story of the Day, we hear how Kelsey Demers, a mom of seven, uses family game night to teach her children bigger life lessons–resilience, critical thinking, and the value of spending real “facetime” around the family table.  You can also watch this podcast on YouTube and reach us at podcast@munchkin.com.  Sam Weinman / IG / FB / LinkedIn Author Sam Weinman was inspired to pen “Win at Losing: How Our Biggest Setbacks Can Lead to Our Greatest Gains,” because his two sons both struggled with losing. Wanting to show them that losing has real benefits, he started on a journey to talk to people—famous and otherwise—about how they handled a notable loss, and what they learned from it.  Weinman is the digital editorial director at Golf Digest and also covered golf and the NHL for The Journal News in Westchester, N.Y. He wrote for numerous publications including USA Today, Golf World, Yahoo! Sports, ESPN the Magazine, and Sports Illustrated. He has been honored with multiple awards in the Associated Press Sports Editors and Golf Writers Association of America writing contests.  Kelsey Demers / IG / TikTok Kelsey and Adam and their seven kids love to play board games! So much so they created the website TheTableTopFamily.com to help everyone find the perfect game to inspire their family to spend more quality time together. They believe that there is nothing more fun than spending an evening together laughing and connecting over the shared experience of playing a game.    StrollerCoaster: A Parenting Podcast is created by Munchkin Inc., the most loved baby lifestyle brand in the world.  You can find all your favorite Munchkin products – including the Spring 2-in-1 Bouncer – at Munchkin.com. In OUT OF THE DARKNESS: The Mystery of Aaron Rodgers (Mariner Books), four-time New York Times bestselling author Ian O'Connor delivers the first definitive biography of the NFL's most captivating and polarizing figure, Aaron Rodgers. From his controversial stances and spiritual awakenings to personal struggles and professional triumphs, Rodgers' story is as compelling as it is complex. Drawing on 250 exclusive interviews (including one with Rodgers himself specifically for this book), O'Connor pulls back the curtain on this enigmatic superstar at the perfect time, as Rodgers begins his 20th NFL season and launches his comeback from the devastating Achilles injury that ended his 2023 season just four plays into his New York Jets career. With incredible access to Rodgers' professional and personal world—including his family, from whom he has famously been estranged for many years—O'Connor reveals an intimate, in-depth, never-before-seen-view of Rodgers, both on and off the field. Ian O'Connor is the author of five previous books, including four straight New York Times bestsellers—Coach K, Belichick, The Captain, and Arnie & Jack. He has finished in first place twenty times in national writing contests, including those conducted by the Pro Football Writers of America, Golf Writers Association of America, the Society of Professional Journalists, and the Associated Press Sports Editors, who named him the No. 1 columnist in the country in his circulation category three times. O'Connor has been a columnist at ESPN, The New York Post, USA Today, and The New York Daily News. #nyjets #nypost #aaronrodgers #nfl

In Part 2 of Episode 40, I'm joined by Wisconsin Golf Hall of Famer and Golf Writers Association of America member, Gary D'Amato, along with multiple-time Tour winner Guy Boros, son of World Golf Hall of Famer Julius Boros. Gary, a member of the Golf Writers Association of America for over 40 years, has covered every Masters since 1993 and was inducted into the Wisconsin Golf Hall of Fame in 2017. While Whistling Straits and Erin Hills are well-known, Gary highlights several other hidden gem courses in Wisconsin, a state that often flies under the radar as a golf destination. He also shares stories of playing alongside some of Wisconsin's greatest golfers, including Steve Stricker, Andy North, Jerry Kelly, and Sherri Steinhauer. Additionally, Gary recounts one of his favorite Masters moments—following Jack Nicklaus as he nearly captured his seventh Green Jacket in 1998—and discusses the book he co-wrote with Packers legend Chester Marcol on the history of the Packers-Bears rivalry. Guy Boros grew up traveling on Tour with his father, Julius, a three-time major champion who won the 1952 and 1963 U.S. Opens and the 1968 PGA Championship. Julius held the record as the oldest major champion, winning the 1968 PGA at 48 years old, until Phil Mickelson surpassed him a few years ago at nearly 51. Guy also found significant success on Tour, particularly in Canada, where he won the Canadian Order of Merit in 1991. His first PGA Tour victory came at the 1996 Greater Vancouver Classic, which he won by a stroke over Lee Janzen. In our conversation, Guy reflects on how his game seemed to elevate whenever he crossed the border, the experience of growing up around the great players of the 60s and 70s while traveling with his father, and his victory at the Vancouver Classic. He also shares insights from playing in this year's U.S. Senior Open at Newport Country Club and the Senior Open Championship at Carnoustie.

In this episode, THE MENTORS RADIO Host Dan Hesse talks with Jimmy Roberts, a 15-time Emmy Award-winning sports reporter and writer for ESPN and ABC Sports, about how athletes break out of slumps. Jimmy Roberts has had what most people would think of as an interesting run. During a 30-year career in network television, he has spoken at the United Nations, and interviewed a convicted murderer behind the walls of Attica State Penitentiary. He has traveled with the heavyweight boxing champion to meetings with Nelson Mandela in Soweto and the Pope at the Vatican … and had dinner at the White House with the president of the United States. That said, he is primarily known as a sports reporter who has chronicled 19 Olympic Games, the Super Bowl, the World Series, the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the NBA Finals, Wimbledon, and, of course golf, where he has covered more than 70 major championships, 15 Ryder Cups, and since 2012 has been the signature voice of Augusta National's acclaimed digital platform MASTERS.COM. Roberts has earned numerous distinctions, including a Golf Writers Association of America award, The Metropolitan Golf Association Distinguished Service Award, and the Lincoln Werden Journalism medal. He is also a prolific writer. For two decades Roberts has been the featured back page columnist for Met Golfer (NY) Magazine. His most recent book, the bestseller “NO ONE WINS ALONE” (Simon & Schuster,) written in 2021 with hockey legend Mark Messier, discusses motivation and performance lessons from one of professional sports greatest leaders. In 2009, Harper Collins published his first book, Breaking the Slump, which tells the story of how some of the best golfers to ever play the game - as well as one former president and one Olympic gold medalist - dug themselves out of career-threatening dry spells. The book was critically praised in Newsweek, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Sports Illustrated. “Jimmy Roberts has always been a wonderful storyteller, touching the hearts and challenging the minds of viewers,” said legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus. Roberts often speaks about the book, which he understands has a universality to it: “As golfers, we're all really the same. There are two types of us in this world; those who've had a slump, and those who are going to have (at least) one. And it's a matter of degree. When Jack Nicklaus struggles, he loses the ball to the left. When I struggle, I just… lose the ball.” Roberts also came to realize in writing this book - ostensibly about golf - that it really was something that had nothing to do with the game; it was a book about how successful people handled adversity. For the last 24 years, Roberts has been a fixture on NBC, where this summer he will report from the Paris Olympic Games.  Called Jack Berry the other day as the PGA Tour Aloha Swing begins in Hawaii. We talked golf and little bit of everything. Always love talking with Jack  who was a long time Detroit News Golf Writer who covered over 100 major golf tournaments and 43 Masters.   I met Jack in the 1960's when I was playing competitive junior golf. We became friends over the years and in many ways Jack was a mentor.  I love that he attributes his becoming a marathon runner to his running in our Emily Detroit Runs through the streets of Detroit in the 1970's-80's.  The photo is from 2002 when Jack was visiting the Big Island to do some hiking with his wife Bonnie. In recent years even at 91 years of age Jack is still telling and writing stories with my long time friends and publishers of Michigan Golfer Art and Jeannie McCafferty.  Jack was long time Secretary and President of the Golf Writers Association of America and is the one responsible for  female reporters finally getting equal access at the Masters in Augusta.  A member of the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame Jack was a leader and pioneer in promoting Women's golf and amateur golf.  Jack shares stories from the 1945 Detroit Tigers World Series win over the Chicago Cubs when his father was the Detroit Tigers Traveling Secretary. Jack has the World Series ring his dad received when the Tiger won.. Jack shares a lot of fun stories from his days of covering the Red Wings when they were playing at Olympia and only 6 teams in the league. I like documenting stories from others that weave into my own stories ... and keep the thread of history tied into the present. As the Detroit Historical Museum would say where Past is Present .  These conversations with Jack sure remind how just how special our fun long time friendship has been.  Ohana spirit is a beautiful thing.

In this episode of Raising Resilience, we are going to talk golf and resilience. It is a topic near and dear to my heart as a relatively new golfer, but one who has embraced the challenge and seen the similarities between my training in mindfulness and meditation the game of golf. Golf guru Jim Flick one said, “Golf is 90 percent mental, and the other 10 percent is ….mental”. The game of golf and the golf course can be an intimidating environment for many women, especially for those who did not learn to play golf as young girls. That is why I find Lynn Cotter's online presence such a welcome, encouraging voice for women and girls navigating the game of golf with confidence and….resilience.Here is a bit about my guest on this episode of Raising Resilience, Lynn Cotter — Lynn is an avid golfer who has a passion for the game and instilling confidence in girls and women learning to navigate the game of golf. Who is Jack Berry? He's a long time dear friend of mine. He was a Sports Writer with the Detroit New for many years. He was awarded the 2007 PGA Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism. He watched me grow up as a pretty good Junior Golfer in Michigan in the 60'-70's. Wrot some nice things about me and I love that he ran in our Emily Detroit Run's in the 70'-80'. I took this story about Jack off the Golf Wire from 2007. What a career he has had and he is still very active with his writing and video story telling in many ways including with my good friend Art McCafferty's GLSP Michigan Golfer. Jack Berry, the 2007 PGA Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism, was the 18th individual to be recognized with this Award. The award honors members of the media for their steadfast promotion of golf.In 1945, the year the Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago Cubs in the World Series Jack Berry's father was the Detroit Tigers Traveling Secretary. PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Jack Berry, of W. Bloomfield, Mich., whose five decades of reporting featured more than 70 of golf’s major Championships, as well as the promotion of the PGA Professional, has been named recipient of the 2007 PGA Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism. Berry is the 18th individual to be recognized with this Award. Berry, 75, will be honored April 4, 2007, at the 35th Golf Writers Association of America Annual Spring Dinner and Awards Ceremony at the Savannah Rapids Pavilion in Augusta, Ga. "It is with a great deal of pride that The PGA of America presents this award to Jack Berry, a professional who has enlightened us all by both his attention to detail and wit, and has captured the best in the game of golf in his work," said PGA of America President Brian Whitcomb. "Mr. Berry has spent his journalistic career covering the landmark events, but he also has been a tireless servant of the game by promoting local golf and elevating the PGA Professional’s vocation to the general public." Born in Detroit, Berry began a lifelong love affair with sports as a baseball fan, following his father, Clair, who was the traveling secretary for the Detroit Tigers. Jack Berry picked up a golf club, his father’s wooden-shaft driver, for the first time in high school. He learned the game through the late PGA Professional Chet Jawor, who was PGA head professional for Detroit’s six municipal golf courses. "I soon became a big fan of the PGA Professional," said Berry. "I always liked what they did for the game and all were good guys and completely different than the Tour professional. I was fortunate that the two newspapers where I worked (Detroit Free Press and Detroit News) had a good tradition of local golf coverage. I enjoyed the opportunity to work with people in the community in covering golf. I am very honored to receive this Award, considering those who have preceded me." Berry attended Marquette University from 1949-1951, and also served two years in the U.S. Army from 1952-54. Upon his discharge, he finished his college education and graduated from Michigan State University in 1956. His journalism career began as a correspondent for United Press (1956-59), where he distinguished himself through his versatility, covering professional and local sports as the wire service’s sports editor for the state of Michigan. Berry joined the Detroit Free Press in 1959, and spent the next 12 years on the sports staff. He marked his first Tour event when he covered the 1958 Buick Open in Grand Blanc, Mich. His professional sports "beat" featured the Detroit Red Wings of the then-six-team National Hockey League; and he marked his first major Championship in 1961, at the U.S. Open at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Mich. Berry joined the Detroit News in 1971, and remained its premier golf writer through 1993, during which time he developed a relationship with Michigan PGA Professionals and the Free Press Junior Golf Program, which collaborated with the Detroit Recreation Department. It is a program "that was a forerunner to today’s First Tee in providing opportunities for young people to join the game," said Berry. In 1984, Berry was named the 27th president of the Golf Writers Association of America, making him the second journalist from the Detroit News (preceded by John Walter in 1958-59) to hold that position. Berry also served as GWAA secretary-treasurer from 1990-98. Following his Detroit News’ career, Berry became one of the most prolific golf freelance writers, with columns and features appearing in PGA Magazine, Chicagoland Golf and the Michigan Golfer. He is the recipient of the 1997 Golf Association of Michigan Distinguished Service Award. In 2003, he became the second journalist inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame, joining the late Walter. Among the members of the Michigan Hall of Fame are legendary five-time PGA Champion and founding PGA member Walter Hagen, and 1953 PGA Champion Walter Burkemo. Berry marked the 1986 Masters, when Jack Nicklaus conquered Augusta National Golf Club at age 46, as not only his most memorable golf event as a reporter, but also a defining moment in his life. Berry nearly died following the Masters. He was stricken with acute viral myocarditis two weeks earlier at the Players Championship. After enduring great pain and energy loss during the Masters, he arrived home to enter the emergency room of the local hospital. "I arrived with heart, liver and kidney failure, and in shock," said Berry. "I almost made the final six-footer." Some two years later, Berry’s recovery was complete, as he competed in the New York City Marathon. His reporting has also ventured into horse racing, where he chronicled Secretariat’s path to the 1973 Triple Crown; to Super Bowl VII, where the Miami Dolphins became the NFL’s first and only unbeaten championship team at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 1973; and to Lake Placid, N.Y., where the 1980 United States Olympic Hockey Team upset the squad from the former Soviet Union in the famous "Miracle on Ice." The PGA Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism, first presented in 1989, honors members of the media for their steadfast promotion of golf. Past Award winners include: Dick Taylor, Herbert Warren Wind, Jim Murray, Frank Chirkinian, Bob Green, Dan Jenkins, Furman Bisher, Jack Whitaker, Dave Anderson, Ken Venturi, Jim McKay, Kaye Kessler, Nick Seitz, Renton Laidlaw, Bob Verdi, Al Barkow and Ron Green Sr. The Award selection committee is composed of representatives from The PGA of America, PGA Tour, USGA, LPGA Tour, Champions Tour, European Tour, Golf Superintendents Association of America, National Golf Course Owners Association, American Society of Golf Course Architects, National Golf Foundation and past recipients.

Don't worry, we have the inside scoop, thanks to Sam Weinman. Sam Weinman joins us today to discuss his latest book “Win at Losing,” and how to find the positive in losing. Sam has been awarded with multiple first place awards in the Associated Press Sports Editors and Golf Writers Association. Impressive! WARRIOR OF CALMNESS “When we can see that there is an upside, even in failure, we are removing fear from the equation.” Highlights - We are limited by the fear of failure and being unsuccessful. The difference between losing and failing is this: losing is a fact, failure is an interpretation. People who are competitive, understand that losing is part of the deal. Having experience with losing, is ultimately very valuable.  Have a plan for when things don't go right. The better prepared you are for failure, the better chance you have at adapting and pivoting. Be “work committed” but don't be attached to the outcome. Look at challenges in a more productive way!
