In this electrifying episode, we're back with the one and only Josh Birks, professional bull rider extraordinaire, as he takes us on a wild ride through the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) and some unforgettable rodeo stories.First up, we celebrate Ky Hamilton's remarkable victory as the PRCA World Champion for 2023, marking a historic moment in rodeo history. But Josh reminisces about another epic NFR win in 2010 when his mate Tom McCallum clinched the title during the event's stint in Tamworth. Josh, who was under contract with the PBR at the time, found himself in a rather precarious situation. While waiting behind the chutes, a confrontation with a judge named Greg Gibson led to an unexpected brawl. Josh vividly recalls the adrenaline and fear of fighting a grown man when he was just 18 years old, and the chaotic events that ensued, including a late-night visit from his father, all because of the altercation with the judge. As the rodeo tales continue, Josh shares a hilarious and somewhat messy anecdote involving his mate DD. After a night out, Josh discovered DD in the hallway, covered head to toe in human feces, courtesy of a romantic encounter gone horribly wrong. It's a night DD will never live down.In another astonishing twist, Josh recounts an incident where a SWAT team descended upon a bull ride event. A bull rider's cop father had tipped him off about security guards abusing bull riders backstage, and the bull riders were planning to confront them. Just as they were gearing up for a showdown, the SWAT team arrived, leaving Josh in disbelief, as he had only seen SWAT teams in movies. The episode takes a dramatic turn as Josh reveals that he was once struck by lightning in Darby, Montana, during a bull riding event. The lightning strike affected around 15 people due to the wet conditions. Josh describes the intense sensation as the lightning entered his knees and exited through his boot, causing his muscles to convulse and tense for hours. One bull rider even dropped to the ground due to the electric shock. Tragically, a girl attempting to flee the scene was struck and killed by a second lightning strike, highlighting the devastating power of nature. To shed light on the gravity of such incidents, Josh and the team delve into some eye-opening statistics, revealing that around 24,000 people are killed by lightning strikes each year, with an astonishing 240,000 injured. It's a chilling reminder of the unpredictable and often perilous world of rodeo.Join us for an adrenaline-pumping episode filled with jaw-dropping stories and unexpected twists in "Rodeo Mayhem: Lightning Strikes and Brawls with Josh Birks.#propertrueyarn Hosted on Acast. This week's episode of OPI Talk features two guests: Greg Gibson, VP and General Manager, North American Papers at International Paper, and Matt Dodd, Senior Executive Director of Corporate Philanthropy at City of Hope. Gibson is this year's National Business Products Industry's Spirit of Life Honouree, spearheading the 2021 Sustain Hope campaign. NBPI has been supporting City of Hope for over 40 years, raising more than $220 million during that time. This fundraising campaign has been like no other, of course, with so many physical events cancelled. One of these is the City of Hope medical research centre campus tour, typically held in February. As Dodd explains, this is being replaced by a Virtual Tour in mid-June, preceded by a final push for the NBPI's personal giving campaign. Gibson and Dodd talk to OPI's Heike Dieckmann about this unique year – the challenges faced, the opportunities embraced and the progress made in terms of moving a step closer to City of Hope's ultimate mission and focus – to eradicate cancer and diabetes. "Gibbo" shares his thoughts on how to accept not being "perfect" as an umpire, talks about some of the biggest games he's worked alongside Gerry, and tells a classic story of an off-the-field interaction with Bobby Cox that ended in a headlock.
Gerry's longtime partner Greg Gibson joined the show to talk about the accident that sidelined him for the 2020 season, how the MLB replay operation has changed due to COVID-19, and leaving college to pursue umpiring.
Reared in Oklahoma, Gib took advice from a pastoral mentor to help guide him in the beginning of his spiritual journey. A mentor-ship which still holds strong today 25 years later. Gib uses Tina Fey's book, Bossy Pants, to help upcoming pastors know what's to follow when preparing for a sermon, and what's next after the last amen is said on Sunday. Also, Gib touches on the 4 pillars (fitness, faith, friends, family) to help find balance throughout life. If you are thinking of joining a church, or considering attending for the first time please consider these powerful points. Think about the lower points of your life and wish what you would have had in a community in it with you, truth source, and desperately need for love. A strong church will walk with you through pain and suffering, truth of scripture will help guide you through the storms of life, and be a place of unconditional love.--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wherethefortuneis/message

IT’S OFTEN OVERLOOKED. Sometimes forgotten. But it never should be. Recovery is just as important to strong performances as your daily workouts and weekly riding volume. Recovery is the other side of the training balance that we often neglect. That is until we’re in a race, the legs feel sluggish, and the field rides away from us. Then we start asking what happened. In today’s technology-driven training world, we have easy-to-use tools like power meters to track our performance. But tracking recovery is not so easy. What’s lacking is that one clear metric or tool to tell us when we’re fatigued. If you discuss the topic with coaches and elite riders, they’ll each suggest a different way to monitor your recovery. Some will point to objective measurable metrics like resting heart rate, heart rate variability, or blood tests. Others will use more subjective measures — how they feel generally, the soreness they experience when they climb the stairs in the morning, or, sometimes, how much their family wants to avoid them. In today’s episode, we delve into the question of recovery metrics, a question that comes from listener Greg Gibson. First, we’ll discuss why the balance between training and recovery plays such an important role in performing at our best. That doesn’t mean that being recovered all the time is a good thing. So we’ll also address the difference between overtraining and functional over-reaching. Next we’ll discuss a recent review comparing subjective metrics to objective metrics of recovery. If you think that a blood test or heart rate measure is necessarily better than answering a few questions every morning about how you feel, think again. In either case, we’ll look at some of the tools for monitoring recovery, including tests like the POMS questionnaire of mood and the RESQ scale, as well as heart rate variability. Finally, we’ll hear from several coaches and athletes about what they feel works best when it comes to monitoring recovery. Our guest today is Dr. Paul Gastin, a professor at the Centre for Exercise and Sport Science at Deakin University in Australia. Dr. Gastin has spent over a decade working with coaches and athletes in the field. He’s particularly interested in how to best measure recovery outside of the lab and has written an influential review paper on the subject. Our other guests include veteran pro Brent Bookwalter, with BMC Racing. We’re also joined by two excellent coaches here in Boulder: Mac Cassin with Apex Coaching and Fast Talk regular Frank Overton, owner of FasCat Coaching. We’ll hear from Armando Mastracci, the founder of Xert training software, about the potential to use training software to give us clues about our recovery state.

Utility companies face allegations that they drove up the cost of electricity in New England, and they’re pushing back. A rural doctor is told by the state she has to quit – in part because of her prescribing practices. Her patients ask, “who will help me with my pain?” We have the story of a wildfire that ravaged Maine 70 years ago. And we find out what the deal is with wild turkeys that are bugging residents around Boston. Dr. Anna Konopka of New London used only paper records and did not accept take insurance, but patients raved about her care. She closed her practice this month to settle allegations from the New Hampshire Board of Medicine. Photo by Britta Greene for NHPR Gaslighted A new academic report, released in conjunction with the nonprofit Environmental Defense Fund, says that New England electricity consumers paid billions of dollars more than necessary over a three-year period. The reason? Large utility companies created artificial gas shortages, according to the report. One of the big utilities named called the report a fabrication, but it's drawn concern from state officials. Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey says she is “reviewing” the report, and public utility regulators in Connecticut have opened an investigation. Maine Public Radio’s Fred Bever has the story. Mellanie Rodriguez, Francisco Rodriguez’s 10-year-old daughter, goes shopping for school supplies with her grandmother, Jesus Rodriguez. Photo by Hadley Green for WBUR We've been following the story of a Chelsea, Massachusetts, man who remains behind bars after being arrested by federal immigration officials during a scheduled office visit. Francisco Rodriguez is awaiting potential deportation back to El Salvador, the country he fled more than ten years ago. But as WBUR’s Shannon Dooling reports, life carries on for his family. There are homework assignments, meals to cook and loads of laundry to be done. Greg Gibson, of Gloucester, Mass, with a photo of his son’s killer, Wayne Lo, on a computer screen. Gibson has kept up a correspondence with Lo for years, and the two men met in person for the first time this week. Photo by Anthony Brooks for WBUR It’s been a little more than two weeks since a gunman opened fire on crowd of concert-goers in Las Vegas, leaving 58 people dead and 489 injured. While investigators search for a motive, the family members of those who were murdered are just beginning a long and painful period of grief. WBUR’s Anthony Brooks has the story of two New England fathers who experienced this kind of grief firsthand, and who turned their losses into action. Not Your Typical Doctors Anna Konopka, M.D. Photo by Britta Greene for NENC Dr. Anna Konopka of New London, New Hampshire ended her decades -long practice this month. She's nearly 85, but her retirement is not voluntary. She says she was forced to shut her practice down by a system that no longer values her brand of patient-centered medicine. However, the New Hampshire Board of Medicine has a different opinion. The board challenged her medical decision making and other aspects of her work. While the details of the allegations against Konopka are confidential, it’s likely that her practice of prescribing opioid painkillers to many of her patients is under scrutiny. New Hampshire Public Radio’s Britta Greene reports. An empty marijuana jar at the Canna Care Docs clinic in Burlington. The company opened its first location in Vermont last month, and offers patients a new avenue to medical marijuana. Photo by Emily Corwin for VPR Two weeks ago, a new health clinic opened its doors in Burlington to do in Vermont what it has already done in several other states: bring thousands of new patients into the state's medical cannabis program. Canna Care Docs bills itself as a “medical marijuana evaluation and education center,” and in places like Maine and Massachusetts, it has created an efficient new avenue for patients to gain legal access to medical marijuana. But some in Vermont worry that the Canna Care model sidesteps the important doctor-patient relationship. Vermont Public Radio’s Peter Hirschfeld has more. Wild Fires, Wild Turkeys Fast-moving wildfires in northern California have destroyed thousands of homes and taken more than forty lives. Seventy years ago, this same time of year, wildfires burned over hundreds of miles in Maine. These fires wiped out towns and forever changed the landscape. New England Public Radio’s Jill Kaufman reports. On Columbus Day, a Cranston, Rhode Island orthodontist stopped in to check on his office, only to find the double pane glass of his waiting room window shattered. And then he found the culprit– a fully-grown wild turkey – still alive. While smashing through a window is rare, human encounters with wild turkeys are becoming increasingly common in the Boston metro and other cities and suburbs around the country. Some residents complain that the animals are attacking humans and cars. Others are bemused or fascinated by the birds, like the Boston man who tweeted this cell phone video of a group of turkeys circling a dead cat, causing a stir online earlier this year. We talk with David Scarpitti, the wild turkey and upload game biologist for the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife about why we're seeing this influx of wild turkeys in urban and suburban areas – and what makes some of them so aggressive. Aaron is joined by #Saints Revolution founder Gregory Gibson Jr. to discuss his thoughts on the offseason moves and 2017 expectations for the #Falcons’ biggest rival. They discuss whether the Saints went “all in” with their offseason additions and whether the arrival of pieces along the offensive line, at running back and in the secondary will make a substantial difference this year. They also discuss how the Saints have seemingly been snakebitten with injuries and how that will affect their team. Greg is on twitter: @SRevolution. Learn more about your ad choices.
