Episode 6 | This episode is all about failure and the complex relationship we all have with it. Dane Sanders and Mitch Dong discuss how perceptions of failure influence our behaviors and emphasize the importance of embracing failure and discomfort as avenues for personal growth. The hosts argue that facing challenges helps build resilience and strength, and they provide practical tips for starting small with new habits that foster significant personal development. The episode encourages listeners to move away from seeking comfort, promoting a life enriched by voluntarily facing discomfort, thereby redefining one's relationship with failure and discomfort.Key Moments:00:00 Introduction01:00 Triggers & Relating to Failure07:35 Embracing Reality11:20 Stages for Embracing Discomfort19:01 Starting Small with Practical First Steps24:53 Enjoy Your LifeMentioned in this Episode:Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan: They mention memes and quotes from these athletes to highlight how they turned their failures into learning experiences and success stories.Thomas Edison: Referenced in relation to his numerous failures before successfully inventing the light bulb, illustrating perseverance and iteration.James Clear: His concept of "habit stacking" from his work on forming new habits is discussed as a practical approach to personal development.Anchor Actions:Commit to Reality: Start by acknowledging and committing to the reality of your current situation. Whether it's an uncomfortable emotion, a failure, or a triggering event, make a conscious decision to face it head-on rather than avoiding it. This could be as simple as spending a few minutes each day reflecting on your feelings and experiences without judgment.Establish Mini Habits: Begin with small, manageable habits that you can commit to daily. Choose something that slightly stretches your comfort zone, like flossing your teeth, drinking an extra glass of water, or doing a short exercise routine. Use habit stacking to integrate these new habits into your existing routines—pair them with activities you already do consistently.Don't Go It Alone: Engage with a community that shares your commitment to personal growth. Episode 2 | This podcast episode, hosted by Dane Sanders and Mitchell Dong, explores the concept of enrolling oneself into seeking personal growth and living a fulfilled life. It references ideas on Stoicism, emphasizing the importance of self-discipline and individual effort in personal development. The discussion delves into the societal craving for comfort and how it leads to weakness. Dane also discusses the concept of 'enrollment,' or committing to personal growth, and contrasts it with being persuaded or enrolled by others. Through various examples, including a powerful personal encounter, the episode conveys the message that true growth and learning come from embracing discomfort and making hard choices. It concludes by encouraging listeners to commit to a small, uncomfortable act for love's sake and share their commitment with someone within ten minutes, emphasizing the importance of taking action towards personal growth.Key Moments:00:00 Introduction00:58 Stoicism and Self-Discipline03:17 The Power of Voluntary Discomfort07:43 Self-Enrollment13:10 Self-Negotiation18:35 Commitment, Action, and Growth22:06 Anchor Action: For Love's SakeMentioned in this Episode:Ryan Holiday's Daily Stoic and Read to Lead programDallas WillardElevated SpacesAnchor Actions:After reflecting on the theme of "for love's sake" discussed in the episode, consider individuals in your life whom you love or wish to love more deeply, whether it's yourself or others. From there, think about an action that aligns with the notion of expressing love through your deeds. It could be something as mundane as completing household chores or engaging in a thoughtful gesture towards someone significant to you. The key is to choose a commitment that might initially seem unappealing but holds potential for meaningful impact. Once you've identified your commitment, make it concrete by setting a minimal viable goal and committing to it. Within the next ten minutes, inform someone close to you about your commitment, emphasizing the significance of this decision. Don't procrastinate; set a timer and ensure you follow through promptly. They discuss the concept of true freedom and how it is tied not to the plethora of choices but to the ability to commit and move forward with decisions. The episode highlights that comfort and an overload of options can be inhibiting rather than liberating. We all know that not every job will be our dream job. But that doesn't mean we can't find ways to love our current jobs. But how can leaders help employees love theirs? That is what Dane Sanders, Co-Founder and CEO of Tell Me Your Dreams, speaks about today. Dane helps business owners build cultures their teams love. At Tell Me Your Dreams, Dane interrupts the burnout cycle by helping employees achieve their dreams and promoting self-discovery, personal responsibility, and meaning at work. In this episode, Dane talks about how leaders can become strong and awake and get employees to care as much as they do.
You know the hero's journey: the ancient myth where the hero leaves home, embraces the unknown, slays the dragon, and returns home an altered soul—battered, bruised, triumphant. Now it's time to embark on your own. If you think the hero's journey is reserved for fairy tales and blockbusters, think again. Every human being is called to live an extraordinary life, yet few answer the call. It's the inspiration that strikes us externally and internally—to move to another country, set out on a new career, or simply become a better human being. On this episode of DTD, we plunge into our own hero's journeys: what caused us to leave the life we knew; the fears we're facing and overcoming; the wisdom we've accrued, the tests we've faced, and where we are now. We are still students in the early stages, although undoubtedly moving in the right direction. We hope this episode can give you the inspiration to become the hero of your own story. When you accept the call and take that first step, your life will change in ways you never could have imagined. Star Wars. Lord of the Rings. Harry Potter. The Lion King. In the classic hero's journey, the hero leaves the familiar and sets out into the unknown. They face adversity and fall to their knees. Yet, they overcome, and return home to share with the world what they learned. Each of us is on our hero's journey. However, it's never as clean and clear-cut as it is in the movies. The journey is messy, painful, and downright terrifying. Sometimes we act the hero; often we act the coward. On our journey, there will be fear, resistance, and we will come face to face with our deepest insecurities. But when we hear the call, the only thing that truly matters is whether or not we heed it. On this episode of The Dare to Dream Podcast, we sat down with the legendary Dane Sanders, a man who refuses to settle for an ordinary life and a conventional impact on the world. Dane is CEO of Tell Me Your Dreams, creator of Men of Discomfort, host of the Converge Podcast, a Story Brand speaker and facilitator, and a certified business coach. Dane was also a professional photographer for over a decade and has written two best-selling books about the business of creativity. Yet, it's Dane's background in philosophy that fueled this conversation. We discuss: — The hero's journey, and what it means to never stop seeking the richness of life. — How to use fear and resistance as a compass for extreme growth. — Living a love-shaped existence in the middle of a harsh reality. — How something can be right, but not right for you. — Success, and being present in the here and now. — What it means to be a practicing philosopher who uses everyday experiences to better themselves. — Playing the infinite game, and finding the courage to be ourselves. We barely scratched the surface with Dane, but we hope this conversation inspires you to dig deep, and set out on your own hero's journey. It's already begun; the choice is yours to heed the call. “This was one of the best conversations I've ever had.” — Vincent Show Notes: Dane's Website Tell Me Your Dreams Courage Is Calling, by Ryan Holiday Gregory's Newsletter Vincent's Newsletter

We're talking with Dane Sanders all about what it means to ditch the shortcuts in our businesses and do the work we need to do. Success is a term that is used heavily in our culture. Success is the thing that everyone works to attain, some people are born into success while others stumble upon it. You may be tempted to blame your situation or your upbringing for your lack of success. In many cases, those things appear to play a role but do they determine your potential? In this episode of Converge, Dane Sanders interviews Jaz Ampaw-Farr and she answers that question with a deafening NO. Success is not determined by your circumstances. Your conviction to attain your full potential is the driving force behind your success. Jaz says conviction is the key to success. Listen to this episode to hear Jaz s story and hear how you can overcome your situation and attain success. Suffering can drive you to succeed Jaz had a childhood full of suffering. She was raised in an abusive home, brought up in a brothel and exposed to things no child should see. She was made to feel inferior and worthless. She used her sufferings to empower and motivate her to succeed. In this episode of Converge, Jaz dives deep into the hurt of the past and how it gave her conviction for the future. You don t want to miss this one. I don t have a choice is one of the biggest lies we tell ourselves It s easy to let life happen to us. Well, we've made it to episode 50, and what a ride it’s been thus far. When we started Studio Sherpas in 2015 and this podcast a year ago, we had no idea the impact that it would have on us and our own businesses. We were driven by a desire to share our stories and knowledge to help struggling filmmakers to run better businesses and bust through obstacles that were keeping them from producing the types of films they wanted to, at the budget they wanted to. But as it turns out, we’ve ended up taking away as much as we’ve tried to give. So in this, our 50th episode, we want to look back at some of the most important lessons that we’ve learned from both our amazing guests, and the inspiring community that Studio Sherpas has become. Whether you’re a new or long-time listener of the show, we know that you’ll find the lessons we discuss in this episode as relevant now as on the original episodes, so let’s dive in! Effective email communication is something of an enigma. All fo us h ave full SPAM filters and still receive plenty of emails we don’t really care to see. But there are those few email sequences we receive, the ones that truly bring value, the ones that are helpful and thoughtful and kind, that we can t wait to see pop up in our inboxes. If you re going to make money from the creative endeavors you re pursuing online you ve got to learn how to craft THAT kind of email so you can establish and maintain the kind of relationships you want and need to grow your business. This episode features Darrell Vesterfelt, a member of the ConvertKit team who is passionate about making email communication not only useful but life-changing. If you ll take the time to hear Darrell s heart and understand what he s saying about the power of email to build genuine relationships, you ll come away a believer – and better equipped to nurture the people in your community. Communicating effectively via email is not as easy as it sounds. You may think that the words on the page are all you need to communicate what you need to say to those on your email list. But considering that there is no tone of voice, no inflection, no body language, and no eye movement evident in text-based interactions, you can easily see that effective email communication requires more than simply choosing the right words. And take it a step further – say you want to build authentic relationships with the people on the other end of your email list (and you do, right?). How do you do THAT effectively? Dane s guest today has a great perspective and the right tool to help you do it, so be sure you take the time to listen and get yourself moving in the right direction with your email campaigns. How do you feel when someone offers exactly what you need? That s how your emails should make your list members feel. If you received a form letter from a person you met at a party and it was written in a way that made it sound like the relationship had gone on for years, you d be a little put-out, right? Turn the scenario the other way…. What if the letter was written with assumptions about your knowledge or place in life that were incorrect? You d feel perturbed in a different sort of way. Many of the emails we send to our email lists do one of those two things when what we really want and need is the ability to address each person who receives them according to the specifics of their situation. Is that even possible with automated email? It is, and you can find out how on this episode of Converge. You must segment your email list if you are going to authentically communicate via email. The same, generic email to everyone on your mailing list has little effect. Why? Because it doesn t touch each recipient where they are – it assumes a lot and broad-brushes the whole group. But segmenting your list according to demonstrated behaviors and simple responses to questions you pose can go a long way toward offering relevant, personalized content that actually makes a difference in the lives of those who see your email pop up in their inboxes. Darrell Vesterfelt and the team at ConvertKit love making those kinds of interactions happen and know how to help you nurture your email relationships in a way that profits both you and the recipients. Find out more on this episode. How do you get started with effective email communication? On this episode of Converge, Dane Sanders asked his guest, Darrell Vesterfelt of ConvertKit, what a person should do to begin establishing healthy and truly helpful email list building practices. His answer was priceless. #1 – Make sure you have the proper tool for the job. An email platform that cannot provide segmentation and personalized content is not going to do the job. #2 – Create a resource that is truly helpful to those who are interested in what you do and offer it to them freely. Show yourself to be helpful from the outset of the relationship. As you teach people what they need to know they become trusting of you, which is the first vital step to building lasting business relationships. Outline of this great episode [0:57] Thinking about the most important relationships in life and how it relates to business and business partners. If you could speak with a person who sees the future clearly, mindful of the ways technological advances we re making today will impact what is to come, what questions would you ask that person? This conversation with Kevin Kelly is EXACTLY that for Dane, his opportunity to speak with a person who many have called visionary and who has long impacted the way he thinks and works in the new digital economy. Kevin is co-founder of Wired Magazine and many notable organizations and online communities as well as author of several bestselling books. He s also the man Tim Ferriss refers to as possibly the most interesting man in the world. Kevin sees himself as one of many stewards of a long line of creative and innovative thought. His humble perspective is refreshing. As Dane and Kevin chat you get the distinct feeling that Kevin doesn t think he s all that important, but rather that it s important that he handles the responsibility of what he s been given, well. What has he been given? He describes it as a long legacy of innovative ideas and perspectives about what s happening in the world and how things work. Combine that with his feeling that he s been at the right place at the right time and you have as an outcome, his very prolific life and body of work. Are the accomplishments of any productive life luck, or is it destiny? Kevin Kelly and Dane Sanders take a deep dive into the issue of fortune, luck, and destiny in this interesting conversation as Kevin unpacks his beliefs about the opportunities and situations in our lives that we could not have arranged, yet come to us all the same. His belief is that much of what happens is luck, but that you are responsible to be ready when that lucky moment arrives. Whether you believe in luck or a greater sense of destiny, you re going to be challenged by the way Kevin thinks about the subject. It was inevitable that Kevin Kelly would write this book… And with a sense of irony he s titled it Inevitable. It s a compilation of Kevin s thoughts on how we got to this point in human history and where our current technological abilities and experiments are leading us into a future that cannot be avoided. What remains to be seen is how humanity will steward what we create and the opportunities that rise from it. He addresses the challenges technology faces (everything from Artificial Intelligence to mass collaboration) and the types of turning points humanity will face in deciding how to use those technologies. Will we turn the corner toward a greater society or allow ourselves to go the way of immediate profit but eventual destruction? Make some time to listen to this one. While you may not agree with Kevin s viewpoint, you will undoubtedly be challenged by it. And that is a huge step toward the creation of your inevitable future. Outline of this great episode [0:01] Dane s introduction to this episode with Kevin Kelly. [2:06] How Dane and Kevin first met and why Dane invited Kevin on the show.
