Hamas announces halt in talks until Israel frees Palestinian prisoners "Hamas leader Mahmoud Mardawi announced the resistance group would halt negotiations with Israel until Palestinian prisoners held by Tel Aviv are released. The decision comes after Israel cancelled freeing of 620 Palestinian prisoners, initially set for Saturday. The United States backed Israel's decision. Separately, Israel has heightened its military readiness near Gaza, while President Donald Trump reaffirmed support for Israel's war on enclave." Germany's Christian political alliance declares election victory "Germany's opposition leader, Friedrich Merz, declared victory as projections showed his Christian conservative political alliance securing 28.5 percent of the vote, surging past rivals. Merz urged swift coalition talks to restore Germany's leadership. Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democratic Party SPD, suffered a historic defeat at 16.5 percent, while the far-right Alternative for Germany AfD, soared to 20.6 percent. Coalition negotiations remain uncertain, with smaller parties struggling to meet the 5 percent threshold. Voter turnout hit a record high of 84 percent." US pushes for Ukraine-Russia peace deal based on Istanbul pact "The US says it is ""very close"" to brokering a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia, modeled after the Istanbul Protocol Agreement, says Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff. Speaking to CNN, he stressed that the war was ""provoked"" and must end. Meanwhile, Ukraine has resisted US pressure to withdraw its European-backed UN resolution demanding Russia's withdrawal, according to officials, setting the stage for a high-stakes vote on Monday." CAIR condemn Musk's claim that US Muslim aid groups are terrorists "The Council on American-Islamic Relations CAIR has condemned Elon Musk for amplifying claims that US Muslim aid groups receiving USAID funds are “terrorist organisations.” CAIR warns that such rhetoric fuels Islamophobia and puts Muslim Americans at risk. Musk's post targeted over a dozen nonprofits, including Islamic Relief and Palestine Children's Relief Fund. ""Anyone who sees the word 'Islam' in the name of an American charity and then immediately declares that the charity must be a 'terrorist organisation' is a hateful person,"" CAIR said." Thousands gather in Beirut to mourn Hezbollah leaders killed by Israel "People gathered in Beirut to mourn the late Hezbollah leaders, Hassan Nasrallah and Hashem Safieddine. Hezbollah's Naim Qassem condemned Israel for breaching a ceasefire deal and stressed the group's readiness to defend Lebanon. The funeral comes after a fragile ceasefire, marking the end of intense clashes between Israel and Hezbollah. Despite Israel's delayed withdrawal, Qassem vowed that neither Israel nor the US would pressure Lebanon into submission. The fallen leaders were assassinated in September and October of 2024."

I know that not all Americans value what I have to say on the US elections. However, I do receive many emails and messages daily asking for advice, and my podcast, The Thinking Muslim, has been fairly instrumental in setting the correct intellectual parameters in parts of the US Muslim community when forming a conscious electoral decision on November 5th.My original position was to echo the views of many leaders within the US Muslim community who have said Muslim voters must disavow the two parties and opt for a third-party option, whoever that may be. But upon reflection, I think that advice, although in the right direction, will not procure the intended result – simply because it will diffuse the messaging of our vote. And thus diffuse its ability to make a statement. That's why I have concluded that Muslims must vote for the Green Party on November 5th, even if they disagree, as I do, with some parts of their policy platform and public positions.Let me remind all viewers that to help us continue to engage critical thought at this time, Please consider becoming a Patron. https://www.patreon.com/TheThinkingMuslimYou can also support The Thinking Muslim through a one-time donation: https://www.thinkingmuslim.com/DonateListen to the audio version of the podcast:Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7vXiAjVFnhNI3T9Gkw636aApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-thinking-muslim/id1471798762Sign up to Muhammad Jalal's newsletter: https://jalalayn.substack.comPurchase our Thinking Muslim mug: https://www.thinkingmuslim.com/merch Find us on:Patron. https://www.patreon.com/TheThinkingMuslimTwitter: https://twitter.com/thinking_muslimFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/The-Thinking-Muslim-Podcast-105790781361490Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinkingmuslimpodcast/Telegram: https://t.me/thinkingmuslim Host: https://twitter.com/jalalaynWebsite Archive: https://www.thinkingmuslim.com Hosted on Acast. We have now passed three months of the Gaza slaughter, and according to the UN, Gaza has become uninhabitable. During these past few days, we have seen another frenetic series of diplomatic meetings by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in the region as the US looks to consolidate the status quo. The genocidal intent of the Israeli state. If it was unclear at the start of the conflict, it is clear now that the United States has given the green light to the Israelis to mete out their punishment. The Arab and Muslim states have, it seems, mostly acquiesced with the US. In public, they condemn, whereas in private, they look the other way or, in the case of Egypt, conspire with the US and Israel to make sure Gaza's resistance is erased. We have, however, seen signs, that can be interpreted as further escalation. The Houthis in Yemen have now accosted over 20 ships in the Red Sea, and on Lebanon's southern border, there remains an active engagement with Israeli soldiers. To help us understand the complexities of the current crisis, I have invited Sami Hamdi back into the studio. A 2017 study estimated that 3.45 million Muslims were living in the United States, about 1.1 percent of the total U.S. population. These communities are as diverse culturally as they are racially and ethnically. However, a common thread which runs through the entire population of Muslims in America is the hesitancy to authorize organ donation for a fallen loved one. Recent research had shown that there exists a persistent lack of understanding regarding donation and the process for transplantation among Muslim communities. Lack of trust of the medical community also contributes to this hesitancy. Unfortunately, among many Muslims in America the popular notion is that organ donation is not permissible in Islam.   This episode of Profound Conversations will focus on the need for culturally appropriate resources and guidance tailored to younger adult Muslim populations predisposed to shifting attitudes and awareness about donation and the efficacy of local healthcare system. Learning initiatives should also address knowledge and understanding within the different professional areas of the organ procurement organizations and transplant centers in the US. These professionals include Physicians, clinical and hospital services, as well as family services teams responsible for the support, communication and coordination of donor authorization and transplant medical services.

*) Israeli army to 'fight hard' in southern Gaza Israel's ground invasion has expanded to every part of Gaza, according to its military, as it ordered more evacuations, vowing to hit south Gaza with “no less strength” than it hit the north. Heavy bombardment followed the evacuation orders, and Palestinians in the sealed-off territory bordering Israel and Egypt say there was no place left to go. Nearly half of Gaza's 2.3 million people fled to the south after Israel ordered civilians to leave the north in the beginning of the war on the enclave. Israel's war on Gaza was sparked by the October 7 Hamas-led attack on Israel that killed about 1,200 Israelis. And over 15,500 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza by Israeli bombardment. *) Turkish Red Crescent sends over $3.4M aid to Gaza amid ongoing war The Turkish Red Crescent has dispatched over $3.4 million worth of aid to Gaza amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis, the head of the relief group said. Addressing an event in Istanbul, Fatma Meric Yilmaz said the Red Crescent had gathered about $17.3 million in financial donations, with the $3.4 million dispatched as immediate assistance. Additionally, the organisation has sent in-kind aid carried from Türkiye on 11 aircraft and two ships. *) US Muslims launch anti-Biden campaign ahead of 2024 presidential election Muslims in the US have launched a campaign against President Joe Biden's bid for re-election in 2024 over his support for Israel in its war on Gaza. A group of Muslim leaders from Michigan, Minnesota, Arizona, Wisconsin, Florida, Georgia, Nevada and Pennsylvania gathered over the weekend in Dearborn, Michigan to launch the campaign. The campaign aims to encourage voters to withdraw their support for Biden due to his “unwillingness to call for a cease-fire and protect innocents in Palestine and Israel," it said in a statement. American news website Axios said that Arab American and Muslim American outrage could hurt Biden's re-election prospects in most of the 2024 swing states he won in 2020. *) 11 hikers dead after Indonesia volcano erupts, dozen still missing Eleven hikers have been found dead and another 12 are missing after a volcano erupted in Indonesia, with rescuers racing to carry injured and burned survivors down the mountain on foot. Rescuers worked through the night to find dozens of hikers stranded on Mount Marapi on the island of Sumatra after it spewed an ash tower of 3,000 metres into the sky on Sunday. Three hikers were found alive and 49 had safely descended from the crater, some with burns and fractures, according to a local rescue official. *) Bitcoin skyrockets, passes $40k amid optimism for US trading approval Bitcoin has risen past $40,000 for the first time since May last year, boosted by hopes that the United States will soon allow broader trading of the world's biggest cryptocurrency. The digital asset has skyrocketed this year, gaining nearly 150 percent, with expectations growing that US regulators will allow the creation of exchange-traded funds. These would track the price of bitcoin and allow the public to invest in the currency without directly purchasing it. Bitcoin was trading above $40,700 at around 0400 GMT Monday.

Native Americans are often invisible in our public discussion of America, and even more so in any discussion of Muslims in the United States. There is an absence of awareness and lack of representation of Native American and Indigenous Muslims both in the broader US public and within the US Muslim community. Native American and Indigenous Muslim Stories: Reclaiming the Narrative project (NAIMS), the first comprehensive study of its kind, is centered around spreading awareness of the lived experiences of Native American and Indigenous Muslims in the United States. On this episode of Deep Dives with ISPU, ISPU Director of Communications, Katherine Coplen, sits down with NAIMS Principal Investigator, Brennan McDaniel, to discuss the findings of the two-part NAIMS report. Brennan and Katherine last spoke in February 2022 on Deep Dives with ISPU to give a preview of what this research could look like. A year and a half later, this episode is part two of that conversation, and we're thrilled to have them back to discuss the findings now that the report is complete.Brennan is a PhD student in the American Studies department at Yale University. He received an MA from Columbia University in 2019 and a BA from Vassar College in 2017. ISPU researchers conducted 17 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with Native American Muslims over a period of six months. Interviews explored identity, ways to navigate multiple marginalized communities, and insights into participants' struggles, hopes, and dreams.NAIMS: Trends and Treasures is a thematic report of the strengths and struggles of Native American and Indigenous Muslims. This is TRT World's Daily News Brief for Friday, October 20th. *) Israel targets Gaza church At least two women have been killed and many other civilians wounded in an Israeli attack on Saint Porphyrius Greek Orthodox Church in besieged Gaza, the Palestinian news agency WAFA said. Palestinian Interior Ministry reported multiple casualties, calling it a "new massacre". The ministry said several displaced people had taken shelter at the church compound when Israeli warplanes targeted it. The strike left a "large number of martyrs and injured" at the compound, the ministry said. *) Israeli defence minister tells troops to prepare for ground assault in Gaza Israel's defence minister has told ground troops to be ready to enter Gaza, though he did not say when the invasion will start. In a meeting with Israeli infantry soldiers on the Gaza border on Thursday, Yoav Gallant urged the forces to "get organised, be ready" for an order to move in. Whoever sees Gaza from afar now will see it from the inside," he said. "I promise you." Shortly after Gallant's statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a video of himself with troops near the border promising victory. *) US Muslim group faces death threats over event to highlight Gaza crisis A major US Muslim civil rights group planning to highlight rampant human rights violations of Palestinians by Israel is moving its annual event out of a Virginia hotel after anonymous threats to bomb the venue. “We strongly condemn the extreme and disgusting threats against our organisation, the Marriott hotel and its staff," CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad, who is Palestinian American, said in a statement. *) Turkish league matches to start with minute's silence in solidarity with Palestine The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has announced that a moment of silence for Palestine will be held before this week's league matches. The federation also said the players will appear on the field wearing black armbands. The war in Gaza, which has been under Israeli bombardment and a blockade since 2007, began on October 7 when the Palestinian group Hamas initiated Operation Al Aqsa Flood, a multi-pronged surprise attack that included a barrage of rocket launches and infiltration into Israel by land, sea and air. The Israeli military then launched Operation Swords of Iron against Hamas targets in Gaza. And finally… *) Biden tries to rally Americans on Israel, Ukraine support US President Joe Biden has delivered a rare Oval Office speech urging Americans to back military aid for Israel and Ukraine at what he called a perilous moment for democracy around the globe, as Israel readied troops for a ground invasion of besieged Gaza. Fresh from a trip to Israel after the October 7 surprise Hamas operation on Israeli settlements, the Democratic president's primetime address on Thursday to the nation, pitched the case for a global US role to war-weary voters and isolationist Republicans. Biden sought to link the Hamas resistance group in Gaza to Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose forces invaded Ukraine. "Hamas and Putin represent different threats, but they share this in common: They both want to annihilate a neighbouring democracy," he said. And that's your daily news brief from TRT World. Jared Milrad interviews best-selling author Professor Evelyn Alsultany about her powerful new book, Broken: The Failed Promise of Muslim Inclusion , in which Prof. Alsultany argues that Muslims are only included through “crisis diversity,” an institutional pattern of crisis (such as high-profile Islamophobic incidents), response, and then inertia until the next crisis.Alsultany notably co-authored The Obeidi-Alsultany Test to help Hollywood improve representations of Muslims—what some label the Bechdel test for Muslims—and serves as a consultant for Hollywood studios, making her a leading expert on the history of representations of Arabs and Muslims in the US media, and anchoring her argument that diversity initiatives often end up marginalizing Arab Americans and US Muslims, while lasting, systemic change remains elusive. We depend on your generous support of Rewriting Hollywood to empower new creative voices and share urgently important stories with the world. On this episode, Kumars interviews Fatema Ahmad, deputy director of Muslim Justice League, a Boston-based community organization committed to providing support to Muslims and others targeted by state surveillance. She has also worked with the American Friends Service Committee’s Communities against Islamophobia project and Muslims for Social Justice. We learn about Countering Violent Extremism or CVE, a federal anti-terrorism program that provides training, funding and otherwise enables people to report on and stamp out the "seeds of radicalization" in mosques, universities, restaurants and other cultural spaces. Though it is deeply racist and has been proven ineffective, CVE's infiltration and surveillance has fed a climate of fear and distrust among US Muslims. CVE programs encourage people to view common Muslim religious and cultural practices, as well as political activity as innocuous as going to an anti-war protest, with suspicion. Fatema highlights the dangers of addressing the racist implementation of CVE with calls for "equal opportunity surveillance" of both white and non-white extremists. Fatema argues that as long as a surveillance apparatus exists, it will always be enforced in a racist manner, so the focus should be on ending these programs rather than expanding them to others. We also talk about the tensions inherent in trying to prevent political extremist violence without acknowledging and addressing the root causes, western imperialism and capitalist exploitation chief among them. Fatema discusses ways that people can get involved in fighting against CVE programs and against the surveillance and criminalization of Muslim communities, and how to avoid accidentally feeding into narratives that stigmatize. April 1, 2018 This talk addresses how the racialization of Arab Americans differed in timing from that of other racialized groups in the US, even though many of its ideological aspects (essentializing) and outcomes (discrimination, surveillance, and hate crimes) are shared. The racialization of Arabs foreshadowed the racialization of US Muslims and South Asians as terror threats. This history should lay to rest the commonly held, but inaccurate, idea that the “special treatment” of US Arabs, Muslims, and South Asians started with 9/11. This talk examines these topics and more. Louise Cainkar, Associate Professor of Sociology & Social Welfare and Justice and Director, Peace Studies Major, Marquette University
