In this episode Joy Gilfilen, host of iChange Justice podcast, asks Irene Morgan to talk about why, as an 80-year old grandmother, she is still standing up for “Right Action for All”. What got her learning about Peacemaking, reconciliation and non-violent communication, counseling and Restorative Justice? What drove her to learn about whole family trauma recovery, abuse addiction and healing work? Join us to learn how – for she's built a bridge to help those facing huge barriers to reentering society. What happened that she has become a spiritual healer and civic activist and started questioning how the business operations of the prison industrial complex works? As a prior co-owner operator of a meatpacking slaughter business with her husband and children she started with questions, then in the 70's,80's and 90's she began volunteering at the local non-profit Northwest Youth services, the Homeless Coalition, Crisis Services, served on the Community Accountability Board before working at Sean Humphrey House. Eventually she saw the gap and found her voice as the founder of the Restorative CommUnity Coalition to work resolving jail and prison issues. “I have always been a champion for the underdog…then one evening I met Don Kirchner, author of “A Matter of Time”. He'd been incarcerated and faced up to 25 years in Federal prison, when he started working with inmates, to help them heal and as a result the prosecutor dropped the additional charges. His book opened my eyes. He's become a champion advocating for all people involved in the jail, justice and reentry business. It inspired me to start the RCC with14 members, including several from the Dept. of Corrections in 2006. We've now worked with thousands of inmates, friends, families, interns, judges, and employees of law enforcement, court employees and service providers. “I have great hope for our future!” - Irene Morgan

In this thought-provoking Aspire to Lead episode, Joshua Stamper had the privilege of sitting down with the incredible Rita Wirtz. Rita shared her wealth of knowledge and experience in education, focusing on three critical themes. First, she emphasized the importance of not labeling students, highlighting how these labels can limit their potential and self-belief. Rita discussed the value of recognizing each student's unique strengths and nurturing a growth mindset. Next, we delved into the concept of feedback over failure. Rita stressed that feedback is a powerful tool in promoting growth and development in students. By reframing failure as feedback, we can create a safe and encouraging learning environment, motivating students to persevere and improve. Rita also underscored the significance of administrators actively immersing themselves in classrooms. She shared her insights on the positive impact of administrators connecting with both students and educators on a personal level. By being present in classrooms, administrators can better understand the dynamics of their schools, foster a sense of community, and make informed decisions that positively influence the educational experience. Join us for a dynamic conversation with Rita Wirtz, and gain valuable insights into reimagining education, providing effective feedback, and the vital role administrators play in creating thriving learning environments. About Rita Wirtz: Rita Wirtz served as Title I ESEA Program Evaluator in the California Penal System,  Curriculum Coordinator for Sacramento County Office of Education, School Principal,  Reading Instructor, K-Adult Teacher and Special Needs educator. She shared her  experiences as Keynote Speaker and Seminar Leader traveling throughout the United  States, inspiring other educators and parents. Cherokee County man charged with assaulting and detaining disabled grandmother

A Cherokee County man has been indicted after prosecutors say he abused his disabled grandmother and did not allow her to leave their home. Nathan Bellino of Canton is charged with four counts of exploitation and intimidation of a disabled adult, one count of aggravated assault — family violence, one count of battery — family violence and one count of false imprisonment, according to the indictment filed January 10. The indictment charges Bellino with strangling his grandmother, hitting and pinching her, and depriving her of medical services, and blocking the exit and refusing to allow her to leave the home they shared in east Cherokee County near Canton. Prosecutors in the indictment say he caused "mental anguish" with his acts of violence, threats of violence and by limiting her contact with other people. The alleged incidents took place in October, according to the indictment. In an arrest warrant filed October 24 by the Cherokee Sheriff's Office, officers say Bellino took his grandmother's cell phone and prevented her from leaving the home for about four days. A Towne Lake collectibles store had “well over 1,000” cards stolen from its collection last week, the store's owner said, but the incident isn't slowing them down. BT Collectibles was broken into during the early morning of January 8. Co-owner Robert Mulligan said there was glass on the floor when he arrived that day. As of Monday, no one had been arrested in connection to this case, said Patty Pan, community affairs liaison for the Cherokee Sheriff's Office. Mulligan said that, after the perpetrator or perpetrators broke into the store, they went to the sealed display cases, smashing them and taking the cards.  Mulligan said there was another robbery in Roswell two days later involving another card shop. Robert Mulligan, alongside his wife, Beatrice Mulligan, opened BT Collectibles about a year-and-a half ago. The store has become popular in the Towne Lake community, and Mulligan said the support from both this community and Cherokee County as a whole has been “overwhelming.” The store fully opened again the following Tuesday, with support pouring in from customers and from social media users. For updates on the store, please visit the BT Collectibles Facebook page. BT Collectibles has a number of sports trading cards, Pokémon cards, memorabilia, comic books, collectibles, figurines, Funko POP figurines and more. In addition to buying cards from the store, customers can also bring in cards to sell. A longtime MUST Ministries employee and volunteer for many community organizations has been named the First Citizen of Cherokee County by the local Chamber of Commerce. As MUST's community liaison for Cherokee County, Kendall Jones is credited with helping hundreds of people with food, shelter and other needs. Jones was surprised with the honor by the Cherokee Chamber Thursday at its annual meeting, and was soon surrounded by family members on stage as he walked up to accept the award. Jones also sang a hymn to the audience, “Make Me a Servant,” which he said he sings to himself most days when he drives to work. Before Jones joined MUST's staff, he was a volunteer at their food pantry. In 2010, he became MUST's volunteer coordinator and intake manager. He was promoted to program director at MUST Cherokee, Cherokee Chamber Pam Carnes said, and in 2019 the nonprofit created his role specifically for him. Jones chairs the Canton Housing Authority, which owns and operates public housing in the city with federal funding, and serves as a board member of Cherokee FOCUS, a collaborative that supports children and families in the community. He also volunteers for the The Homeless Coalition of Cherokee County and for the chamber. In addition to serving Cherokee County through various local organizations, Jones has extended his service abroad as the missions chair at Canton First United Methodist Church. A crew of Cherokee County firefighters is raising money for one of their own after he lost his home to a fire Monday. Firefighter Joel Saunders and his wife, Carolyn, are staying with a friend after their home burned to the ground, according to a GoFundMe page set up by Saunders' crew members. The couple was not home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. They lost everything except for their vehicles, according to the page and Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services. According to Cherokee Fire spokesperson Lieutenant Michael Sims, the couple had lived in Blue Ridge. A link to the Go Fund Me can be found at Tribune Ledger dot com. House of Hope, a Cherokee County-based food bank, is celebrating 10 years in operation supporting their community. The nonprofit organization, with a home base located east of Canton on Cumming Highway, provides aid for between 105 to 130 families coming from as far as Dahlonega and Jasper every week. Its programs include food box pickups, a clothing closet and supplying families with smoke detectors and car seats. Director Wendy Graham shared that when beginning the expansions of the original pantry, she was told that most organizations fizzle out by three years. Ten years later, Graham and operations manager Christy Hofrichter are aiming their sights even higher. The nonprofit took its first steps on December 22, 2012 as a means of providing one hot meal to families connected with Free Home Elementary. Graham went one step further to provide Christmas Eve meals that month. The pantry's generosity grew to meet the needs of their community. Soon they were offering a soup kitchen in January, toiletry bags and care packages of nonperishable food items. When summer came, the organization opened its doors every Wednesday to continue to provide foodstuffs. Plans for the pantry's future include a separate room for the clothing closet and a larger truck for necessary item transportation. Graham said she also wants to help support other budding food banks in the area. Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to visit the food pantry at 11954 Cumming Highway on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Otherwise, the organization accepts monetary, food and clothing donations year-round. How Kanawha Got Her Name   Through making some stupid choices as a kid, I ran away from home at the age of 15.  I isolated myself from family and friends, was living on the street, eating out of dumpsters and sleeping under cars.  I worked as a waitress and often held three jobs at a time.   I worked in a breakfast room mornings, served lunch and dinner at a Greek Restaurant, and then worked till 2 am serving drinks in bars until they figured out that I was under age and I'd have to move to the next bar.   Eventually I was able to earn enough to rent an unheated garage.  It had a toilet, sink and bathtub but the water to run them all was via a garden hose I ran in through the broken window.  There was no A/C, no fan and only the heat of one small space heater that I bought.  One night, thinking I would freeze to death I fell asleep too close and caught my hair on fire.   The clothes I left home with hung on my skeletal frame now as I had been reduced to just skin and bones.  I used an old rope for a belt and even my shoes were too big now and caused blisters on my feet as I had to walk to and from all of my places of work in Charleston, W.Va.   I lived with a 6'4" 250 lb mutant named Jim Jones, who was a drug addict who routinely beat me within an inch of my life.  No matter how hard I worked, it was never enough to support his habits.  Sometimes I would be out of work for weeks because I couldn't be serving food with blackened, swollen eyes and bloodied lips.  It was then that I was at my lowest and often felt that I just couldn't keep going.   One night as I was walking home to my garage I deterred toward the Kanawha River bridge. I climbed as high as I could go and, borrowing a line from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, figured the fall alone would kill me.  I slipped off my shoes and did a swan dive into the icy waters of the Kanawha River.   Much to my surprise, the fall didn't kill me, but as I surfaced I wondered if hypothermia might.  Feeling really stupid I thought to myself that I couldn't even commit suicide right…Then I heard the voice of a man screaming from the bridge, "Don't worry!  I'll save you!"   To my horror, a homeless man who had apparently watched me jump, had now leapt off the bridge to rescue me.  Being in considerably worse condition than me, and drunk to boot, his rescue effort resulted in me dragging him back in to shore, but I was touched nonetheless.  His selflessness in the face of what little he had to give showed me that no matter how bad things are, you can help someone else; you can make a difference, if you just never give up.   Fast forward to 1994 and a terribly skinny Siberian Lynx arrives.  She was so far gone, and yet tenaciously held on to life and her indomitable spirit.  She reminded me that no matter how difficult life becomes we never know what is just around the corner.  If we have faith, stay positive and NEVER EVER, EVER GIVE UP, we will succeed.   I named her Kanawha so that every time I thought her name, I would be reminded to never give up.  Now I volunteer with the Homeless Coalition and speak at their events to encourage others who are homeless to keep trying and to let their donors know that the people they help could one day be paying it forward.   Kanawha is 22 now, and as most of you know has lost her soul mate Katmandu who was 19.  Kanawha suffers from seizures when she hears the lawn mower so we have moved her back into the wooded area of the sanctuary beyond Cameron and Zabu so that her final days are as stress free as possible.   As always, I want to thank all of you who give so deeply of yourselves to these animals.  It is the inspiration that enables me to deal with the dark side of the enemies we face who seek to abuse and exploit big cats.   I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/   I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story.  My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet.     You can help feed the cats at no cost to you using Amazon Smile! Born in 1957 as 1 of 14 children to the late Mel & Norma Meiners, Terry attributes his success to a strong German Catholic work ethic-oriented childhood, which laid the foundation to his now legendary 1985 move to WHAS-Radio. Prior to WHAS, Meiners worked with Ron Clay as the co-host of “The Show With No Name,” a morning drive-time program on Louisville rock station WQMF-FM. These 2 provided edgy humor to Louisville’s airwaves,  in fact, WQMF hired Clay & Meiners away from rival station WLRS-FM, where the duo hosted the risque “Morning Sickness” show from 1981 to 1983. At WHAS-Radio, The Terry Meiners Show has aired weekday afternoons since 1985 to present. Meiners is known for broadcasting impersonations of prominent local citizens & satirical interviews of eclectic news figures, comedians, film/TV stars, & politicians. Plus, the lampooning of (U of L) Cardinals fans & of (UK) Wildcats fans is never far away! Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence (yes that one) refers to Meiners as “my 1st celebrity” friend & claims he “still makes me starstruck.” OH MY!  Meiners has received numerous awards such as: Mag.’s “Best Radio Personality” award 20 times! KY Monthly mag.’s & the Leo Weekly’s “Best Radio Personality” Along with television news anchor Rachel Platt, Meiners co-hosts the WHAS Crusade for Children, the long-running annual local telethon benefiting children’s charities, as well as, emcee duties &/or promotional work for Metro United Way, the Homeless Coalition, Dare to Care Food Bank, Louisville Metro Police Fdtn., & the Yum! Brands fundraisers for World Food Program. Today, Meiners is a co-host of weekday mornings’ “Great Day Live” (news, knowledge, & nonsense) with WHAS-TV news anchor Rachel Platt.Terry has described his job as interviewing people from all walks of life and let them tell their stories. Funny I can relate to that & we are about to do just that!  Terry has an abundantly happy life as a blended family with 2 sons named Max & Simon Meiners, both morally & ethically strong young men, he proclaims, & stepfather to his beautiful wife Mary George Meiners’ children Aidan & Grace, & if he has nothing else to do, Terry is an avid golfer, marathon runner & private pilot!

Howard Glasser and Stephanie Rule are our hosts for this timely conversation regarding transitioning youth and the homeless and how NHA can be life changing for these individuals. Join us as trainers, Quinn Donnay, Sarah Schutt and Nicole Semmens share their experiences with this segment of population. Quinn, is a Transitional Living Program Manager at New Day Youth & Family Services,  a non-profit agency that aids young people ages 17-22 that are experiencing homelessness, have a lack of supports, and minimal protective factors in Albuquerque, NM. Quinn utilizes NHA in her supervision with staff as well as with the young people in care. Quinn pairs NHA with young people experiencing homelessness to relentlessly build inner wealth so that they are able to recognize their greatness and strengths to move forward onto a rich path of independence.    Sarah, is first and foremost an involved and dedicated mother to 2 sensitive, caring, and vibrant children.  she currently works as the Homeless Management Information System Administrator for the Housing and Homeless Coalition of Central New York, which acts as HUD Continuum of Care for Oswego, Cayuga, and Onondaga Counties.  She was a Case Management Supervisor of Runaway and Homeless Youth Case Management Services, which served youth 16-24 who were homeless or housing vulnerable in Onondaga County.    Nicole,  has been an NHA Advanced Trainer since 2011.  She is a mother of two incredibly joyous children and a former program director of 12 years working with transition-age homeless youth.  She is currently working as the Event Assistant for Children's Success Foundation in addition to working as an NHA Coach/Trainer passionately spreading the Nurtured Heart Approach to parents, teachers, and mental health professionals.

My 75th episode was spent in the delightful company of Mr. Darius Murray, Clinical Mentoring Associate for FAU‘s CARD, or Center for Autism and Related Disabilities. His passion for helping the most vulnerable in our community was obvious from the start—particularly when he talks about CARD’s iRise2 Mentoring program, which pairs young protégés (ages 11-21 or 22) with mentors from all walks of life. We discuss what the autism spectrum is, particular challenges, the rising statistics, vaccines, and more. Darius has spent his life giving to others, having worked his way through the Homeless Coalition of Palm Beach County, AmeriCorps, and Big Brothers Big Sisters previously. So, he definitely had a lot to share with me about the importance of volunteerism generally. Mostly, though, we talk about the iRise2 mentoring program. He is very clear that ANYONE can be a mentor (after passing a background check, of course!), and that current mentors come from all kinds of backgrounds, skillsets, and interests. And, if the mentor program is not quite someone’s cup of tea, there are so many other opportunities to positively and powerfully /impact youth with autism. Reach out to Darius by phone at 561-213-6936 or by email at dmurra23@fau.edu. Or, head to Autism.FAU.edu.
