In the heart of the Valley, the Frederick County Homesteaders Farm Crawl is back, scheduled for June 14th. In a recent episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael, showcases the event which promises to bring together farmers and the local community in a day filled with fun, learning, and delicious fresh produce. Janet welcomed several guests including Sam Armel, Jaclyn Mommen, Megan Craggs, and newcomer Rhonda Donadieu, each representing different farms and sharing their passion and agenda for the upcoming event. Frederick County Homesteaders, represented by Sam Armel, kicked off the conversation explaining their mission to connect local communities with farmers and rejuvenate local agriculture. Sam highlighted that their farm crawls are self-guided tours allowing families to interact directly with the farmers, ask questions, and purchase fresh produce directly from the source. She emphasized that the event not only supports local farmers but also educates the community on local agriculture through various publications and workshops. Janet remarked on the evolving relationship between farmers and their communities, noting how farmers now welcome visitors with open arms, eager to reconnect with consumers. Rhonda, representing Simple Gifts Farmstead, reiterated that the farm crawl is a family event designed to engage children and adults alike, providing an informative and interactive experience on how food is raised. Jaclyn Mommen from Patti's Place at Laurel Grove Wine Farm shared the exciting activities planned at their vineyard including hayride tours and a special wine and meat pairing event. Megan Craggs of Carter Hall Farm enthused about the farm tour they have prepared, featuring their Berkshire pigs and other farm animals, along with local vendors. Rhonda added that Simple Gifts Farmstead would offer a free-flowing exploration format allowing visitors to enjoy various farm animals and participate in a lunch fundraiser for their nonprofit organization. Sam provided essential details for attendees, advising to come prepared with proper attire, sunscreen, and cash as some farmers might not have card facilities. She also reiterated that advanced ticket purchases were encouraged due to limited availability of certain event perks. The event's culmination will see the debut of their bi-annual shop local guide featuring stories, recipes, and farm DIYs. What happens when a total city girl decides to go all-in on the homesteading life… and ends up building a full-blown farm business from scratch? In this episode, I sit down with Beth DeClerq, a self-taught homesteader who started out just wanting to be self-sufficient—and ended up creating a profitable farm business that's now helping her family build toward a full-time income. Beth didn't grow up farming. She had zero experience with animals or agriculture. But one step at a time—raising chickens, gardening, milking a cow, selling eggs—she figured it out. Hey friends! Hope you're doing well! Spring is poking its head up here but we're still getting snow off and on as well, so we're not able to start planting outdoors yet. We have lots of great stuff happening inside though! We've got loads of grow lights and heat mats set up and we have tons of seedlings already taking off! We're really trying to narrow our focus this year to growing larger quantities of a fewer number of crops. Specifically we're focused on the things that we need big amounts of in order to produce the things we make for our farm store – mainly our seasonings and our herbal teas. We're also still growing vegetables for our personal use, and continuing to expand our perennial food forest of course. But we're getting a lot more dialed in on prioritizing what we really HAVE to have versus all of the fun random things that I WANT to have when I flip through seed catalogs. Which sometimes is easier said than done, because there are just so many cool varieties out there and I want to try them all! Speaking of seeds, that's our focus today! My guest today is Dan Brisebois, a farmer who focuses on growing seeds. His newest book is The Seed Farmer and I was sooooo ridiculously excited to get to talk to him about it! I've been a bit of a fan girl about Dan's work for quite a while now, ever since I learned about his worker co-operative farm and then got to go through his Farmer Spreadsheet Academy a few years back. Yall know how much I love a spreadsheet! Dan's book is absolutely fantastic and I think you'll get a ton from it whether you're wanting to learn to save seed and come up with your own plant crosses for your own personal garden use, or if you're interested in selling seed someday yourself.
