94: Stop Wasting Your Money on These 9 Biohack Devices!

I've reviewed a ton of health and wellness gear over the years — some of it genuinely helpful, and some of it so absurd that I don't know whether to laugh or cry. So in this episode, I'm doing something a little different: I'm walking you through the most useless health gadgets I've come across lately. Not just things I wouldn't recommend, but things I think you should actively avoid. We're talking Bluetooth forks that vibrate when you eat too fast. AI smoothie machines with subscription pods. Mood-tracking wearables that flash colors. And yes, cold plunge shorts… designed to make the cold plunge feel less cold.  Because apparently the problem with cold therapy is that it's uncomfortable. These devices don't just waste your money, they also waste your intuition. They pull you further away from your own body's feedback by outsourcing basic instincts to tech: when to eat, when to drink, how fast to chew, even how you feel.  And to be honest, the idea that we need electronics to tell us these things is just… sad. We've gotten so out of touch that we now rely on apps to remind us to drink water and gadgets to track how salty something tastes. Health doesn't require tech to micromanage every moment of your day. In fact, most of these gadgets just add EMFs, microplastics and confusion to your life.  So in this episode, I'm calling out the worst offenders — not to shame anyone who's tried them, but to remind you that the best solutions are usually simple, grounded, and entirely free.  Let me know which ones you've seen (or bought!) that made you raise an eyebrow. I'd love to hear what's on your list. 93: Does Cold Plunging Make You Die Sooner?

Play Episode Listen Later May 14, 2025 10:36

Someone recently told me about a Mayo Clinic researcher who claimed that cold plunging triggers the same chemical response in the body as dying — and that, basically, you die a little every time you do it. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Apparently, cold plunging is now a near-death experience, and there's “no credible evidence” it offers any benefits. Right. Look, I'm the first to say cold plunging isn't a miracle cure. But this take is just flat-out absurd. So in this episode, I unpack exactly why that claim doesn't hold water, as well as what's really happening when you expose your body to the cold.  The first time I ever stepped into near-freezing water, it was intense. But now? It's mildly uncomfortable at worst. And the benefits I've seen firsthand are impossible to ignore. The reality is that like any hormetic stressor, cold exposure gets easier over time.  You adapt. You become more resilient (mentally and physically). Your tolerance increases, your stress response improves, and you start to notice things like better energy, stronger immunity, and more emotional stability. That's not dying. That's growth. Could you overdo it? Sure. But that's true of anything. Done intelligently, cold plunging is one of the simplest, most accessible tools for building resilience and reclaiming your edge. You don't need a double-blind trial to tell you what your body already knows. So if someone tries to scare you off with talk of “chemical cocktails of death,” ignore the noise. Try it yourself. Start slow. Listen to your body. And maybe — just maybe — don't take cold plunging advice from someone who's never taken a cold shower in their life. Living healthy doesn't have to mean going broke. Yes, pasture-raised eggs, non-toxic furniture, and sauna setups can get ridiculously expensive — but that doesn't mean you have to compromise your health just because you're on a budget. In this episode, I walk through a number of practical swaps and cost-saving strategies you can leverage to live healthy without overspending. From cold plunging in natural bodies of water instead of buying a $5,000 tub (no, it's not the same, but it's close enough if you need to save money), to skipping overpriced olive oil and cooking with butter, there are tradeoffs that make sense without sacrificing your well-being. I also talk about how we've drastically cut down on laundry costs using an ozone system, and why buying secondhand furniture might be better for your health than brand-new. A lot of this comes down to avoiding the trap of “health through consumerism.” You don't need a high-end gadget to reduce EMFs — just turn off your Wi-Fi. You don't need to subscribe to every wellness app — just go outside and breathe. It's not about being cheap. It's about spending where it matters, skipping what doesn't, and remembering that the simplest solutions are often the most powerful. With so many conflicting studies and experts shouting from every corner, it's easy to lose sight of one simple truth: your body knows best. In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, I'm calling out the noise around “good” vs. “bad” foods and diving straight into the powerful signals your body sends every time you eat. From unexplained breakouts and weird cravings to stubborn heartburn and crashing energy levels, your physiology is practically begging you to pay attention. We'll explore how issues like bloating, bad breath, headaches, and even mood swings can be early warning signs that a particular food isn't working for you — no matter what the latest scientific study or diet guru claims. Yes, science and ancestral wisdom matter, but they mean little if you feel lousy every time you bite into certain foods. Think of it as detective work: noticing patterns between what you ate and how you slept, how your skin looks, or whether you're getting random joint pain or weird body odor. If you've ever felt guilty because some “healthy” item (like sourdough or raw milk) just doesn't sit right with you, this episode is your permission slip to trust yourself. It's not about demonizing specific foods; it's about becoming so in tune with your body that you can instantly tell the difference between a mild craving and a genuine sign of hunger — or a subtle symptom and a flashing red light. When in doubt, remember: if it doesn't feel good, it probably isn't good for you. Your unique biology is more than just numbers on a lab test or words in a research paper… it's an entire feedback system that never stops working.  So give yourself the freedom to listen, experiment, and (yes) sometimes say no to foods that simply don't serve you. It's dinnertime. You've cooked up a tasty meal and the whole family gathers around the table, only for your child to declare, “I'm not hungry!” Sound familiar? In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, we're taking on one of the trickiest aspects of parenting: navigating those moments when your kids refuse to eat, either out of genuine lack of hunger or just a desire for something else (like dessert). We'll talk about why rigid mealtimes might clash with our kids' natural hunger signals, why forcing them to “clean their plate” can backfire, and how hormones like ghrelin and leptin play a key role in deciding when to eat (or not eat). We'll also dive into the difference between real hunger and a fleeting craving — because if you're not truly hungry, how do you know when you're actually full? This episode will give you practical ways to handle dinnertime standoffs without turning the table into a battlefield. We'll discuss why it's okay for your child to skip a meal if they're genuinely not hungry and how to encourage them to choose nutrient-dense foods rather than sugary or processed alternatives. Whether you're a parent dealing with pickiness or simply an adult trying to honor your own body's hunger signals, this episode offers a fresh perspective on mealtime “rules” and will help you and your family eat more intuitively.  Let's foster an environment where our kids can discern their true hunger cues — and hopefully save you from some dinner table drama along the way. In my widely-read article about how I cured my IBS symptoms, I recommended against eating eggs in the early stages of gut healing. And I got plenty of pushback for that recommendation. I understand why. Eggs are hailed as nature's perfect superfood, have been a dietary staple for centuries, and their nutrient-packed yolks truly are nutritional powerhouses.  But not all parts of the egg are created equal, and the whites might be secretly sabotaging your digestion. In this episode, I break down the real differences between egg yolks and whites, explaining why those trendy egg-white omelets are basically plates full of nutritional trash. I also explain why some of the proteins in egg whites can trigger gut issues — especially if you're prone to IBS or bloating — and share practical advice on choosing and preparing eggs to optimize digestion and nutrient absorption. Plus, I'll give you the inside scoop from our own experience raising chickens on our homestead. You'll learn why pasture-raised hens that are fed a true omnivore diet produce eggs with superior nutrient density, and how cooking your eggs the right way can make all the difference for your health. 88: Why Calorie Counting Fails Every Time

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 9, 2025 16:35

Counting calories seems logical on the surface: just burn more calories than you eat and you'll lose weight, right? But what if this seemingly straightforward advice is deeply flawed, inaccurate, and a massive waste of your time? In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, I'm challenging one of the most entrenched myths in the health and fitness community: calorie counting. The truth is, your body isn't a simple calculator — it's a dynamic, complex system influenced by hormones, metabolism, and even the types of foods you choose. There's a huge gap between the calories you think you're burning and what your body is actually doing. Your smartwatch, fitness apps and even nutrition labels might lead you astray, with margin errors so big that your daily calculations become virtually meaningless. And that's before we even get into how different foods — protein versus carbs, for instance — are metabolized completely differently by the body. Instead of obsessing over calories, I suggest a radically simpler approach: prioritize protein, focus on satiety, and learn to tune into your metabolic signals. Because when your hormones (especially insulin) are balanced and your blood sugar stays stable, losing fat becomes infinitely easier. And if tracking helps you feel in control, forget calories and focus instead on how foods affect your body — perhaps through the use of a continuous glucose monitor. This episode isn't just about debunking calorie myths. It's about shifting your mindset to something more powerful: understanding your body's true needs. For decades, beef has been painted as the villain on our plates, blamed for heart disease, cancer, climate change, obesity, and even poor digestion. But have you ever stopped to question if these claims are backed by solid science, or are simply myths repeated often enough that they've become “common knowledge?” In this eye-opening episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, we're cutting straight to the facts about beef, debunking one myth at a time. Is beef really clogging arteries, causing cancer, and leading to environmental ruin? Or is the true culprit hiding in plain sight: the processed carbs and ultra-processed foods often served alongside a juicy steak? We also dive into popular beliefs about vegetarian longevity, cholesterol fears, and even those trendy plant-based burgers that are being pushed everywhere you look. Spoiler alert: nature already perfected nutrient density, and it's not found in highly-processed patties or lab-grown proteins. The truth is, beef can be one of your strongest nutritional allies, supporting metabolic health, lean muscle growth and overall vitality. And when cattle are raised properly, beef production doesn't harm the environment — it actually helps restore ecosystems and sequester carbon, becoming part of the climate solution rather than the problem. So next time you're told to swap your steak for quinoa or a lab-made burger, take a closer look at the facts and enjoy that ribeye without guilt. Join us as we dismantle decades of misinformation about beef, reclaiming our plates, our health, and even our planet. Stay primal, friends. 86: The Truth About Running & Longevity | With Brad Kearns

As a former pro triathlete, Brad Kearns used to push himself to the extremes of human endurance. He competed globally, chasing medals and personal records, only to eventually confront a humbling truth: his intense cardio regimen wasn't building him up — it was slowly breaking his body down. Overtraining left him exhausted, inflamed, and far from the image of optimal health he once envisioned. Today, Kearns sees fitness differently. Rather than pushing endless mileage, he's embraced shorter, more explosive movements like sprinting, jumping and lifting — movements that mimic our ancestral heritage, and that our bodies naturally crave.  In this episode of the Primal Shift podcast, we talk about why modern fitness culture has become hyper-focused on cardio, overlooking the fact that our bodies thrive when exposed to a balanced set of exercises. We also discuss the consequences of pushing too hard, too often, including skyrocketing cortisol, hampered metabolism and staggering injury rates. Kearns' journey highlights the fact that optimal health is about nuance, not extremes. It's about rediscovering a primal approach to movement that energizes rather than exhausts, and heals rather than harms. By shifting away from relentless endurance toward mindful, primal fitness, we reconnect with our evolutionary blueprint, supporting lifelong vitality rather than short-term achievements. 85: Sleep Before Midnight: Does It Really Matter?

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 19, 2025 6:42

We like to think we can bend the rules when it comes to our sleep routine — for instance, by sleeping in after staying up late. And it's true that sometimes that practice can leave us feeling just fine. But just because your body adapts to a late-night routine doesn't mean it thrives on one. Sleep isn't just about getting enough hours; it's about getting them at the right time. And if you're pushing your bedtime later and later, you could be sacrificing the most restorative phases of sleep without even realizing it.  Most of your deep sleep — the phase responsible for tissue repair, immune function, and growth hormone release — happens early in the night. This is when your body does its heavy lifting, repairing muscles, consolidating memories, and strengthening the immune system. Push your bedtime back and you're cutting into the sleep that helps you recover and perform at your peak. And sleeping in the next morning won't fully compensate for what you lost. So what about night owls? Some people swear they function better late at night. But is that biological, or just a habit? Evolutionary research suggests that in early human tribes, it made sense for some members to stay up later to keep watch while others slept. But just because a small percentage of the population may be wired to stay up later doesn't mean modern habits like staring at screens late into the night, artificial lighting and erratic schedules aren't making the problem worse. The truth is, your circadian rhythm is designed to sync with natural light. Morning sunlight tells your body it's time to be awake and alert, while darkness in the evening signals the release of melatonin to prepare for sleep. When you ignore this cycle — whether by choice or necessity — you risk everything from poor recovery to hormone imbalances to sluggish metabolism and increased stress. So how do you reset your internal clock? Small, practical shifts make all the difference. Get outside first thing in the morning for at least 10 minutes of natural light. Cut back on screen exposure at night or wear blue light-blocking glasses if you must use devices. Instead of forcing yourself into an earlier bedtime all at once, shift it gradually — 15 minutes at a time — so your body can adjust naturally. These minor tweaks can lead to massive improvements in energy levels, mental clarity and metabolic health. If you've been struggling with grogginess, inconsistent sleep, or just want to optimize your recovery and performance, this episode will give you the tools to align your sleep with how your body was meant to function.  Learn more: Primal Shift Podcast #14: Do THIS for Better Sleep: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V72_fDrm_vI   Learn why you might have trouble falling asleep: https://michaelkummer.com/health/cant-fall-asleep/   Learn how to sleep better and fall asleep quicker: https://michaelkummer.com/health/sleep-guide/  Thank you to this episode's sponsor, Peluva! 84: Why I Quit Alcohol & Started Cold Therapy - Ciaran Flanagan

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 12, 2025 41:19

For Ciaran Flanagan, quitting alcohol wasn't about having hit rock bottom — it was about realizing just how much better life could be without it. Like a lot of people growing up in Ireland, drinking was part of the culture he grew up in. He wasn't an alcoholic, but he found himself caught in the same cycle so many people fall into: weekend drinking that derailed his focus, energy, and productivity for days. But after a month without alcohol, everything changed. His brain fog lifted, his sleep scores shot up, and he had more drive than ever before. And once he saw the difference, there was no going back. Flanagan is the founder of Inergize Health, a seven-figure wellness brand that's redefining recovery with portable cold plunge therapy. In this episode, we talk about how dropping alcohol wasn't just a health decision, but a complete shift in how he approached performance, recovery and resilience. That shift led him to cold plunging and breathwork, two powerful tools that helped him replace the false boost of alcohol with mental clarity, emotional stability, and sharper focus.  He shares why he prefers cold plunging after workouts and before bed, the science behind the dopamine and norepinephrine response, and how head-dunking triggers the mammalian dive reflex to boost cognitive function. We also dig into breathwork, including why it's one of the simplest yet most overlooked tools for managing stress and sharpening focus. Like cold exposure, breathwork forces you into presence, training you to handle discomfort instead of running from it. And when you stack these practices, the results are undeniable. If you've ever wondered whether cutting out alcohol is worth it, or if you're looking for practical ways to boost mental and physical resilience, this episode has something for you. Testosterone is the engine of vitality and the foundation of muscle growth, energy, focus and resilience. Unfortunately, modern life can make it hard to maintain optimal levels, due to factors like poor diet, chronic stress and environmental toxins that can disrupt production at every step of the process. In this episode, we break down how testosterone is made, including why nutrient-dense foods (especially those rich in cholesterol, zinc, and Vitamin D) are critical, and how deficiencies in these key building blocks can tank your levels of this vital hormone. But diet isn't the only factor. Poor sleep, excess body fat and exposure to synthetic estrogens from plastics and tap water all play a role in lowering T. We discuss how stress drives up cortisol, which directly suppresses testosterone production, and why lifestyle choices — like tight clothing and prolonged heat exposure — can further sabotage your hormones. More importantly, we cover practical, science-backed strategies to optimize testosterone naturally. That includes getting high-quality sleep, lifting heavy weights, spending time in the sun, and keeping your testes cool. We also dive into why pre-cooling before exercise can give your testosterone a major boost, and why avoiding plastics and chemical-laden personal care products matters more than you think. If you want to go even deeper, check out episodes 32 and 65, where we explore the downsides of testosterone replacement therapy and why T levels influence your ability to take on hard challenges. Sleep isn't just about rest. It regulates everything from metabolism to cognitive function, and when it's off, the entire body suffers. Yet for something so essential, many people struggle with it daily, caught in a cycle of stress, bad habits, and rigid expectations about what “good sleep” should look like. In this episode, sleep expert Nick Stewart shares a counterintuitive approach: instead of obsessing over perfect sleep, focus on flexibility. He explains why rigid sleep schedules often backfire, how worrying about lost sleep makes it even harder to fall asleep, and why humans are uniquely prone to sleep struggles compared to other animals. One of his most effective strategies? If you're lying awake and feeling frustrated, get up. Move to a different room, create a calm environment, and only return to bed when you're naturally drowsy. This simple shift has helped many people break free from years of insomnia. We also discuss how modern burnout is one of the biggest drivers of sleep issues, why the way you structure your day matters more than your bedtime routine, and how early morning sunlight exposure can dramatically improve sleep quality.  Stewart breaks down why most people overestimate their sleep needs, why education is the most powerful tool for improving sleep, and how small adjustments — like walking first thing in the morning or reframing sleep as a flexible process — can make a huge difference. If you've struggled with sleep, whether it's falling asleep, staying asleep, or just waking up feeling rested, this conversation offers real, actionable strategies that go beyond the usual advice. 81: The Truth About Our Broken Health System

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 19, 2025 11:36

We're told that our healthcare system exists to keep us healthy, but what if it was never designed for that? In this episode, we trace the roots of modern medicine and nutrition to uncover how profit-driven interests shaped the way we approach health today — and why so many people are chronically sick despite significant medical advancements. It all started in the early 20th century, when John D. Rockefeller used his influence to centralize medical education, steering it away from nutrition and holistic care and toward a pharmaceutical-first approach. His reforms, built on the Flexner Report, ensured that doctors would be trained to treat symptoms with drugs rather than address root causes.  Later, Ancel Keys' flawed research further distorted our understanding of health, vilifying saturated fats while paving the way for highly processed, industrial seed oils — ingredients that still dominate today's ultra-processed food landscape. The food industry took this even further in the 1980s when major tobacco companies pivoted to food production, using their expertise in addiction to engineer products designed for overconsumption. The result? The population got hooked on cheap, nutrient-devoid foods while chronic disease skyrocketed.  Meanwhile, the medical system thrives on managing disease, not preventing it — because prevention doesn't generate revenue. So where does that leave us? It means that reclaiming our health requires stepping outside the system. That starts with rejecting ultra-processed foods, prioritizing whole, nutrient-dense meals, and challenging the mainstream narratives about diet and disease. It also means seeking out medical professionals who focus on prevention and lifestyle interventions rather than prescriptions alone. The system isn't going to change itself. But by making informed choices, we can take control of our own health. Most people go through life never realizing how good they could actually feel. And when David Maus jumped into an icy river for the first time, he had no idea he was starting a routine that would help him break free from depression, brain fog, and the daily grind that was weighing him down.  Maus is now a health and wellness advocate who left a successful career in the automotive industry to pursue his passion for optimizing human performance. Once a high-level executive, he found himself struggling with low energy and creeping health issues, despite following conventional wisdom. In this episode, we explore how embracing cold exposure caused a pivotal shift in his life, and why it's one of the most underrated tools for mental clarity, stress resilience, and long-term well-being. We also dive into the broader picture of modern health, including how our conveniences —  from temperature-controlled homes to plastic-filled diets — have disconnected us from our primal roots.  Maus shares his transition from running multiple car dealerships to immersing himself in a lifestyle built on movement, natural rhythms and ancestral principles. Along the way, we discuss the real impact of sleep, morning sun exposure, and grounding, as well as the hidden dangers of blindly trusting mainstream health narratives. If you've ever wondered whether you're missing something crucial in your routine, or if you're just starting your health journey and don't know where to begin, this episode is packed with insights that can help you take that next step. Let's cut through the noise, reconnect with what really works, and build a foundation for a healthier, more resilient life. 79: Immune Health Hacks: Vitamin C Exposed!

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 5, 2025 7:16

Is Vitamin C really the immune-boosting miracle it's often claimed to be? In this episode of the Primal Shift podcast, we explore whether it's overhyped and ineffective, or something you should actually consider adding to your supplement stack.  While this powerful antioxidant is crucial for your body's defenses and supports collagen production, skin health and cellular repair, its effectiveness isn't as clear-cut as many believe. After all, while research shows that high doses of Vitamin C can slightly reduce the duration of colds, there's little evidence that it prevents them entirely.  Plus, the source of your Vitamin C matters. Whole food sources like citrus fruits and organ meats often outperform synthetic supplements because they come with cofactors that improve vitamin absorption and utilization.  If you're following a nutrient-dense, animal-based diet, your Vitamin C needs may already be lower, as such diets reduce oxidative stress and limit the competition between carbs and Vitamin C for absorption. But true immune health doesn't rely on one nutrient alone; it's built on daily habits that support your body's natural defenses. Sunlight exposure for Vitamin D, cold plunging to activate shock proteins, and sauna bathing to repair cells are just a few examples of powerful tools to keep your immune system functioning optimally. Pairing these practices with regular exercise, quality sleep, and an animal-based diet creates a holistic approach to staying healthy, even during cold and flu season. For me, freeze-dried organ supplements fill in any nutritional gaps when fresh organ meats aren't available. Packed with immune-supporting nutrients like zinc, selenium, and Vitamin A, they're an easy way to supercharge your diet. And while Vitamin C can play a supporting role in immune health, it's not a standalone solution. Focusing on nutrient-dense foods and consistent daily habits will always have a bigger impact on your overall well-being. So, does Vitamin C work? Yes, but the bigger takeaway is that health is about the whole picture, not just one supplement. By building strong foundations with your diet and lifestyle, you can support your body's natural ability to thrive year-round.  Learn more: Download my free Animal Based Diet Food & Beverage List: https://michaelkummer.com/food-list/  Health Benefits of Eating Organ Meat: https://michaelkummer.com/organ-meat-benefits/ Listen to Primal Shift Podcast #52: Grass-Fed vs. Conventional Beef: Vitamin and Fatty Acid Comparison: https://www.primalshiftpodcast.com/52-grass-fed-vs-conventional-beef-vitamin-and-fatty-acid-comparison/  Thank you to this episode's sponsor, Peluva! 77: The Truth About the Carnivore Diet: Why Nose-to-Tail Is Essential!

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 22, 2025 9:01

Is eating only steak and eggs really the optimal way to follow the carnivore diet? Or are we missing something vital by overlooking the nutrient-rich parts of the animal? In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, we explore what the carnivore diet gets right, where it often falls short, and how eating nose to tail can revolutionize your health. The carnivore diet is a powerful tool for healing chronic conditions like IBS and autoimmune disorders, but many people focus solely on muscle meat and eggs, ignoring the broader spectrum of nutrients our bodies need to thrive. Drawing insights from evolutionary history and nutritional science, I explain why organs, fat, and connective tissue are indispensable for a truly optimal diet. After all, even true carnivores like lions and wolves prioritize these nutrient-dense parts of their prey. We also take a critical look at commonly consumed foods within the carnivore community, such as poultry and eggs. While egg yolks are nutritional powerhouses, egg whites come with potential downsides, including anti-nutrients like avidin that can interfere with biotin absorption. Similarly, conventional poultry — which is high in unstable PUFAs and low in nutrients — was never a staple in ancestral diets. These details matter when aiming for peak health. I also address common concerns about organ meats and why eating nose to tail aligns with how humans evolved. If you find fresh organs impractical, freeze-dried supplements can offer a convenient alternative without compromising on nutrients. Whether you're using the carnivore diet to heal or optimize, this episode will help you rethink your approach and get the most out of your meals. And once healing is achieved, I share how you can reintroduce other foods — like seasonal plants, raw honey and dairy — while maintaining a foundation of nutrient-dense animal foods. Are you ready to embrace the way humans were designed to eat? Tune in for practical tips, evolutionary insights, and strategies to make the carnivore diet work for you. Don't forget to share your thoughts: Have you tried a nose-to-tail approach or strict carnivore? What's worked for you? Let's continue the conversation in the comments or on social media. Cold exposure might sound unpleasant, but its benefits are hard to ignore. From boosting testosterone and improving insulin sensitivity to building resilience and enhancing physical performance, embracing the cold can be one of the simplest ways to unlock your body's potential.  In this episode of the Primal Shift, I'm joined by Dr. Thomas Seager, a cold exposure expert and Associate Professor at Arizona State University's School of Sustainable Engineering & the Built Environment. He's also the CEO and co-founder of Morozko, a company that offers super-premium cold plunge systems, and came on the podcast to help unpack the science behind intentional cold exposure (including why just minutes of discomfort can lead to lasting health benefits). One of the key takeaways from our conversation is the importance of pre-cooling — using cold exposure before exercise rather than after. Research shows that pre-cooling extends endurance and maximizes mitochondrial efficiency, allowing the body to produce energy more effectively without overheating. Seager shares how even small doses of cold, like a couple of minutes in an ice bath, can unlock these benefits and create measurable improvements in physical and mental performance. From practical tips for getting started to insights into how to effectively combine cold exposure and heat therapy, this episode is packed with actionable advice and science-backed insights. 75: Use this Breath technique for Better Focus, Fitness, and Calm!

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 8, 2025 9:58

The way most of us breathe — shallow and fast — can trigger stress and anxiety by activating the body's fight-or-flight response. Over time, this leads to chronic stress, poor sleep and reduced immune function. But with intentional breathing techniques like breath retention, you can turn every breath into a tool for stress relief and better health. Breath retention, or holding your breath after inhalation and exhalation, is a simple yet transformative practice that trains your body to handle stress more effectively by increasing your carbon dioxide (CO2) tolerance. This improved CO2 tolerance helps better regulate your nervous system, making you more resilient to stress and anxiety while boosting endurance and mental clarity. Incorporating breath retention into my daily walks has been a game-changer. It doesn't require extra time, but it delivers incredible benefits. While walking my dog, I practice short breath holds — 10 to 20 seconds after each inhalation and exhalation — and immediately notice improvements in focus, relaxation and overall energy. If you're curious about how to start, here's a simple challenge: inhale deeply, hold your breath for 10 seconds, then exhale slowly. Reverse this by exhaling fully, then holding your breath for as long as you comfortably can. Over time, you'll notice improved control, reduced anxiety, and greater mental clarity. Whether you're looking to optimize your workouts, calm your mind, or address stress and anxiety, breath retention is a practical and accessible solution. These breathing techniques can fit seamlessly into your day, transforming how you feel and function with every breath. Remember, the journey to better health often starts with something as simple as slowing down and reconnecting with your breath. Chef James Barry wants to change that.  With over 20 years of culinary experience under his belt, he's seen first-hand how real, whole foods can transform your health. The problem (at least when it comes to organs) is their stereotype for being bad-tasting and hard to prepare. Plus, most American shoppers don't even know where to find them (if their grocery store of choice offers any organ meat at all).  That's where Barry's company Pluck comes in: it offers an organ-based seasoning blend that makes it easy to add nature's most powerful superfood to any meal. In this episode, Barry shares how his own experiments with different diets — including a 30-day raw, primal eating plan — taught him what it feels like to be truly nourished. 73: NAD Supplements That Actually Work

Have you ever felt like you've tried every trick in the book to slow down the signs of aging, only to see no measurable results? That's exactly how I felt when I began NAD supplementation. In this episode, I'll tell you about my experience with this increasingly popular anti-aging approach, including the bold experiment that finally got my NAD levels to increase.  NAD, or nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, is a molecule essential to life. It's involved in critical functions like energy production, DNA repair, and cellular communication. Unfortunately, NAD levels naturally decline with age, which researchers link to issues like reduced energy, cognitive decline, and a slower metabolism. In theory, boosting NAD should help combat these effects. But in practice, my early attempts were disappointing. Months of supplementation resulted in almost no change, and I was ready to give up on the concept altogether. Then I met Dr. Jin-Xiong She, the founder of Jinfinity. He introduced me to Jinfinity Vitality, a supplement that combines NMN (an NAD precursor) with other ingredients like creatine monohydrate, D-ribose, and niacinamide. Intrigued but skeptical, I decided to test it by tripling the recommended dosage for three weeks.  The result? My NAD levels jumped from the mid-20s to 47.4 micromolar — nearly double any previous measurement.  Listen to the episode to learn what happened when I tried to replicate this experiment with a different supplement, as well as what the downsides are to going off label in terms of dosage.  Learn more: Shop the Jinfinity Vitality NAD+ Booster: https://www.jinfiniti.com/product/vitality-nad-plus-booster-supplement-powder/  How to Slow Aging: Five Science-Backed Tips and Tools [Blog Post]: https://michaelkummer.com/slow-down-aging/  Biological Age Test Review: Epigenetics Explained Simply | Hannah Went: https://www.primalshiftpodcast.com/62-biological-age-test-review-epigenetics-explained-simply-hannah-went/  Thank you to this episode's sponsor, OneSkin! 72: How to Improve Indoor Air Quality With David Milburn of HypoAir

Your indoor air quality might be worse than you think, and it's not just about dust or odors. The air in most homes can harbor hidden dangers like mold spores, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and even harmful bacteria — all of which can quietly undermine your health.  Plus, modern building materials and design choices often make the problem worse, sealing contaminants inside and creating environments that allow them to thrive. In this episode, David Milburn of HypoAir explains why so many homes struggle with indoor air quality, and highlights a range of solutions that are as practical as they are innovative.  One effective solution that many people overlook is ionization, which can be leveraged indoors to neutralize pollutants, combat mold growth, and reduce toxins that traditional filters often miss.  Whether it's addressing mold from damp crawl spaces, mitigating air pollution from nearby roadways, or choosing the right air purification technology for your space, Milburn's insights will help you transform your home into a healthier environment. If you've been overlooking the air you breathe, this episode is a wake-up call to take control of what enters your lungs and your life. 71: The Goal Strategy That Helped Me Quit My 9-5 by 40

Most of us set goals, like losing weight, improving our fitness or changing our career trajectory. But how do you go from dreaming about a better future to actually creating one? In this episode, I share the step-by-step process I've used to transform my own goals into reality. It all starts with clearly defining what you want. There's something powerful about speaking your goal out loud, which changes it from a passing thought into something much more concrete. For example, in my early 30s, I told my wife that by the age of 40, I wanted to quit my day job and work on my blog full-time. That small declaration set the wheels in motion to make it happen. Visualization is another key step. Studies show that imagining yourself achieving a goal can rewire your brain, influencing the decisions and actions you take. By vividly picturing the life I wanted — a life where I was free to focus on my passions and work without constraints — helped me prioritize my time, develop new skills, and build connections that turned my vision into reality. If you've ever felt stuck between dreaming and doing, this episode will give you practical tools to move forward. Imagine gaining an edge in life not by force, but by knowing when to yield. Jeff Patterson, founder of Northwest Fighting Arts and Portland Tai Chi Academy, joins me to discuss the art of yielding — an approach that uses awareness and adaptability as tools for strength.  Patterson explains that yielding isn't about giving in; it's about harnessing energy, refining focus, and applying strategy to achieve better results in everything from self-defense to personal growth. Physically, yielding can mean moving with an opponent's force rather than fighting it, a principle that gives martial artists a way to handle larger, stronger adversaries. But the concept reaches far beyond combat. Mental yielding can help us stay centered in daily life, using presence to navigate challenges and conflicts without escalating them. And emotional yielding can help us manage our reactions to stress, choosing thoughtful responses over automatic ones. So whether you're interested in martial arts, meditation, or simply looking to enhance your everyday mindset, this conversation reveals practical ways to cultivate balance and strength by yielding to, rather than resisting, life's pressures. 69: Is Your Dog's Diet Really Healthy? Here's What You Need to Know

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 13, 2024 16:20

Ever wonder if you're feeding your dog the diet nature intended? In this episode, I explain why dogs are natural-born meat eaters and challenge some widespread misconceptions about what your dog should be eating (even those your vet might be promoting).  Dogs descend directly from wolves, which are obligate carnivores with physiology designed for a meat-centric diet. From their sharp, pointed teeth (which are ideal for tearing flesh) to their highly acidic digestive systems (which effortlessly break down meat and bones), every aspect of a dog's anatomy screams “carnivore.” Unfortunately, modern feeding practices usually ignore this biological reality, with many dogs consuming grain-filled kibble that doesn't align with their body's demands. Our German Shepherd, Rib Eye, thrives on a raw meat diet. His meals consist of muscle meat, organs, bones, and occasional extras like egg yolks, raw milk kefir, and even the stomach contents of prey animals. The results of this diet are clear as day: a shiny coat, clean teeth without brushing, and boundless energy. This stands in stark contrast to many kibble-fed dogs, which suffer from obesity, dental issues, and chronic diseases like diabetes and cancer. If you care about your dog's well-being, it's time to question the status quo. Feeding a raw meat diet may be more costly and time-consuming, but the benefits to your companion's health are undeniable. Let's rethink what's truly best for our four-legged friends and align their diets with what nature intended. In this episode: 00:00 - Intro 00:40 - Dogs as carnivores: Ancestry and physiology 01:45 - Why vets recommend kibble 03:30 - Feeding Rib Eye: Our raw diet experience 06:20 - Benefits of raw feeding vs. kibble 08:40 - Common misconceptions about dogs' diets 10:30 - Health crisis in pets: Obesity and chronic diseases 12:15 - Kibble ingredients and why they're harmful 14:30 - The cost and practicality of raw feeding 15:20 - Conclusion: Think for yourself, question the status quo Learn more: Time to rethink what's in your dog's bowl: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7ztpe0qXsA Feeding our loyal German Shepherd a natural meat diet, just like nature intended: https://youtube.com/shorts/AqfI_jeDZyA Thank you to this episode's sponsor, Peluva! By making small, sustainable changes — like swapping processed snacks for whole fruits and prioritizing protein intake — he significantly improved both his mental and physical health. His story underscores the foundational role of mental health in overall wellness, influencing our motivation to make healthier choices and maintain beneficial habits. Simple practices such as walking after meals not only stabilize blood sugar but also enhance mood, demonstrating how accessible actions can lead to substantial benefits. During our conversation, we also talk about the importance of home cooking for controlling ingredient quality and supporting optimal health, contrasting it with the pitfalls of processed foods and restaurant meals laden with unhealthy fats and additives.  With his upcoming cookbook, Noland aims to make nutritious eating both accessible and enjoyable. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, many of us are gearing up to prepare the perfect holiday feast. But before you grab just any turkey from the supermarket, consider opting for a pasture-raised bird. They have better fat profiles, more nutrients, and superior flavor compared to their factory-farmed counterparts. Plus, pasture-raised turkeys are often raised via regenerative farming practices that benefit the planet. In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, I explain why the way a turkey is raised directly impacts its nutritional value, and how conventional farming practices can lead to birds full of inflammatory omega-6 fats. By contrast, pasture-raised turkeys that forage naturally have a more balanced omega-3 to omega-6 ratio, which reduces inflammation and promotes overall health. Additionally, these birds are richer in vitamins and minerals due to their varied diet of grass and insects, making them a far healthier option for your holiday table. Plus, I'll tell you what we've learned since we started raising our own slow-growing turkeys here at the Kummer Homestead. From having full control over their diet and lifestyle to seeing the direct impact on their health, it's been an eye-opening journey. If you're looking for a more flavorful, nutrient-dense bird this Thanksgiving — and one that aligns with your values around health and sustainability — this episode is for you. I cut out entire food groups overnight, convinced it was the best way forward for our health. But without explaining my reasons or considering her perspective, it nearly pushed us to the brink. In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, I sit down with relationship coach Bates to discuss the often-overlooked impact that health and lifestyle changes can have on relationships. Bates shares similar stories from his clients and his own life, revealing how making drastic changes (even with the best of intentions) can create unexpected friction with those you love.  During our conversation, we talk about the importance of setting boundaries, how being overly accommodating to your partner can lead to a buildup of resentment, and why it's critical that you refrain from imposing your beliefs on the people around you.  Whether you're dealing with disagreements over food choices with a partner, managing family expectations, or struggling to maintain your health goals amid social pressures, this episode is filled with practical tips and insights on how to navigate those tensions while staying true to your values. 65: Why Testosterone Affects Your Drive to Do Hard Things

Have you ever noticed how on some days, powering through a tough workout or jumping into the freezing water of a cold plunge feels almost effortless, while on others, it's as if your ability to push through discomfort has vanished? It's not always just a matter of motivation or willpower. Low testosterone can directly impact both your physical and mental performance, making it more difficult to stay focused and deal with hormetic stressors like extreme temperatures and intense activity. Despite my relatively healthy lifestyle, my testosterone levels have always been less than optimal. In other words, my levels are consistently on the lower end of normal, which means there are times when I struggle to maintain the drive to push myself in the gym, or when I suffer from mental fatigue that makes it harder to see tough projects through to completion.  So in this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, I share my personal journey of battling fluctuating testosterone levels and explain what I've learned over the years about how to increase testosterone naturally, why it's so important for your overall health, and how to recognize the low testosterone symptoms that could be holding you back.  The good news is that making the right lifestyle changes, getting proper nutrition, and using the right supplements can help support your hormone production. Unfortunately, testosterone production is a multi-level biological process, so these interventions don't work for everyone. Still, they're worth trying before turning to more serious options like hormone replacement therapy.  If you've been struggling to maintain the energy and focus you once had, or if you're finding it harder to push through discomfort, it might be time to take a closer look at your testosterone levels. Understanding the role testosterone plays in both your mental and physical resilience is key to unlocking better performance and well-being. Tune in to this episode to learn how to recognize the signs of low T, as well as what you can do today to start addressing the problem. 64: Why Meditation Is Powerful!

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 9, 2024 41:13

Many of us go through life in a state of constant distraction and stress, unable to break free from the pressure that modern living places on our mental health. Whether it's struggling with decision fatigue, anxiety, or simply feeling overwhelmed by the constant stream of information, finding calm seems harder than ever. That's where meditation comes in; it can be a powerful tool to rewire your brain and help you manage these challenges in a healthier way. In this episode, I sit down with Ariel Garten, a neuroscientist, psychotherapist, and the founder of Muse, a brain-sensing headband that makes meditation more accessible by providing real-time feedback on brain activity. Muse allows users to see how their mind responds during meditation, giving them the tools to understand whether they're truly focused or letting distractions take over. This feedback helps meditators stay present and progressively refine their practice, which can be especially valuable for beginners or anyone struggling to stay consistent with meditation. Garten shares fascinating insights into how meditation goes beyond just relaxation, explaining its role in actually reshaping how our brain processes stress. She dives into how regular practice can reduce reactivity to stressful stimuli — those automatic, emotional responses that lead to frustration or anger — by strengthening parts of the brain responsible for emotional regulation.  In other words, meditation isn't about suppressing emotions, but about being more aware of them and having the space to choose a better response. One of the most interesting points we discuss is how even short, daily meditation sessions can have a profound impact on overall mental well-being. It doesn't require hours of practice to see results. According to studies, just a few minutes of mindfulness each day can improve focus, reduce anxiety, and increase emotional awareness. Garten highlights how building this habit creates a ripple effect, where emotional control leads to better decision-making, healthier relationships, and a greater sense of overall calm. If you've ever felt overwhelmed or struggled to maintain a sense of balance in a world filled with distractions, this episode offers valuable tools to help you regain control and become more present in your daily life. Whether you're a seasoned meditator or just starting out, Garten's practical advice and the innovative Muse technology can help you take the first step toward mental clarity and emotional stability. 63: HbA1c Levels Explained: Why They May Be High Without High Blood Sugar

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 2, 2024 7:44

Are you finding that your HbA1c levels are elevated despite being on a low-carb, ketogenic, or even carnivore diet? Recently, my HbA1c test came back at 5.7 (just under the prediabetic range), and I knew something was off; after all, I've been following a relatively low-carb lifestyle for years, so there's no way my blood sugar should be high enough to suggest prediabetes.  In consulting with carnivore diet expert and medical doctor Shawn Baker, I learned that healthy red blood cells that live longer than average can actually skew HbA1c readings, making it appear as though you have higher blood glucose than you do. This happens because the longer your red blood cells live, the more glucose has time to attach to hemoglobin, artificially inflating your HbA1c levels. (Conversely, shorter-lived red blood cells can lead to lower readings, even in those with high blood sugar.) In this episode, I break down the science of the HbA1c test and explain how factors like red blood cell lifespan, iron deficiency, anemia, and other health conditions can all affect your hemoglobin A1c results.  Even if you have healthy blood sugar and no signs of diabetes, your HbA1c might still be higher due to these factors. In my case, despite my elevated HbA1c, my continuous glucose monitor (CGM) showed average blood glucose levels between 85 and 89 mg/dL — well within the normal range. Did you know that your biological age can tell a different story than your chronological age? From a health perspective, it's not just about the number of years you've lived, but how your body has aged at the DNA level. Understanding your biological age can reveal how lifestyle choices and environmental factors have impacted your long-term health and longevity. In this episode, I'm joined by Hannah Went from TruDiagnostic, a company that specializes in biological age testing and epigenetics, helping people gain deeper insights into their epigenome and overall health. Went breaks down the science of aging, highlighting how lifestyle decisions affect up to 80% of your health outcomes, compared to the 20% dictated by genetics. Whether it's stress from childhood, diet, or daily habits, these factors influence your body's biological age and its vulnerability to diseases. Using my own biological age test as a case study, we explore how it's possible to age biologically faster than your chronological age, and what can be done to slow this process. Went also delves into epigenetic clocks like the OMICmAge, which assess gene expression to predict disease risks and mortality. Understanding these markers allows you to take a proactive approach to health, making preventative lifestyle adjustments before problems arise. We also discuss the practical side of biological age testing, including privacy concerns and the importance of regular testing to guide healthier choices. This episode provides actionable advice on how to take control of your aging process and improve both your lifespan and healthspan. If you want to understand how to better manage your biological age and epigenome, don't miss this deep dive into the science of aging and longevity. Your gut is home to an entire ecosystem of microorganisms that silently shape your digestion, immune function and overall health. Most of us barely think about it, but this hidden universe inside us plays a vital role in our well-being.  I recently explored my own gut microbiome using Jona, an AI-powered platform that goes far beyond typical gut tests.  Jona offers personalized insights based on cutting-edge research, showing how your microbiome could be impacting everything from inflammation to metabolic health. I was surprised to discover that my gut contains 246 different microorganisms, including the pathogen Clostridium perfringis. While that sounded alarming at first, Jona helped me understand that, in the context of my lifestyle — which includes raising livestock and spending a lot of time outdoors — it's not a cause for concern. More importantly, Jona highlighted that my gut's bacteria have powerful anti-inflammatory properties, which may explain why my CRP levels are consistently low. One of the most fascinating aspects of my results is how they align with my animal-based diet. Most of the probiotics in my system come from fermented dairy products like kefir, reflecting how my dietary choices have shaped the microorganisms living inside me. Jona's personalized approach even helped confirm why I sometimes experience discomfort with raw milk, revealing that my gut lacks certain lactose-digesting bacteria. If you're interested in gaining deeper insights into your own gut health, Jona could be a game-changer. The platform links your microbiome data with real scientific studies, offering actionable recommendations tailored to your lifestyle and health goals. After wrapping up the first season of the Primal Shift Podcast, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the journey so far: 60 episodes packed with insights on how to bridge the gap between ancestral living and modern demands. This season has been about laying the foundation of a healthy lifestyle, covering everything from nutrition and exercise to stress management and reconnecting with nature.  If you're new to the podcast, I highly recommend diving into Episodes 3 to 10, where I discuss the core principles that guide everything we do here. One of the highlights of this season has been the incredible guests who've shared their expertise. For instance, in Episode 39 I had an eye-opening conversation with Dr. Sean Baker about the carnivore diet, and in Episode 43 I talked to former Navy SEAL Dr. Kirk Parsley about optimizing sleep.  Each episode offers something unique — whether it's practical tips or deep dives into the science behind health and wellness. I've also covered topics that are close to my heart, like why I transitioned away from keto after three years (Episode 11) and the importance of growing your own food (Episode 56). I've particularly enjoyed sharing my personal experiences, like how I maintain a strong and lean physique (Episode 12) and the wellness practices I've adopted to stay balanced amidst the chaos of modern life (Episode 58). These episodes aren't just about theory — they're about the actionable steps I've taken to align my lifestyle with the principles I believe in. Looking ahead to season two, I'm excited to mix things up with a combination of shorter, bite-sized episodes and more in-depth interviews. One week you might get a quick 10-minute episode focused on a specific topic, and the next week, we'll feature a longer, more detailed conversation with an expert. I'll also be bringing my wife Kathy on board more frequently to share her perspective on homeschooling, homesteading, and how we're making our lifestyle work as a family. Her insights add a different dimension to the podcast, offering a more rounded view of how we navigate this journey together. Another thing I'm really looking forward to is giving you more behind-the-scenes looks at how we live day-to-day. I'll be sharing more about our approach to growing our own food, the challenges and rewards of homeschooling, and how we're building resilience as a family.  I'm eager to continue this journey with you and appreciate all the feedback you've provided along the way. Your input helps shape the direction of the podcast, and I'm always interested in hearing what topics you'd like to explore next. If there's anything specific you'd like to hear about in the next season, don't hesitate to reach out! Thanks for being a part of the Primal Shift community. 59: Paleo, Keto, Carnivore [Navigating Dietary Changes as a Family]

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 21, 2024 35:48

Navigating a health journey can be challenging, especially when it involves significant dietary changes and their impact on family dynamics. In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, my wife Kathy and I open up about our transition through various diets and how it affected our lives and relationship. Our journey began when Kathy was diagnosed with prediabetes. We decided to cut out processed sugars, which seemed straightforward. But soon thereafter, I became interested in the Paleo diet and enthusiastically declared that we were switching to that significantly more restrictive dietary framework. Kathy didn't share my enthusiasm. Switching to Paleo meant eliminating staple foods like beans, rice, and lentils from our diet. She was born and raised in Costa Rica, where these foods are a central part of the cuisine, so I was essentially asking her to give up a number of beloved traditional dishes. Despite our initial struggles, we adapted and learned to prepare Paleo-friendly versions of our favorite meals. Then, just when we thought we had it all figured out, I discovered keto and once again, we faced the challenge of another dietary overhaul.  This time, it meant cutting out even more carbs, including natural sweeteners and many of the ingredients Kathy had started using in her cooking. Reflecting on this period, Kathy recalls how our son had stomach issues due to the high consumption of almond flour and almond milk, which were two common ingredients in our keto recipes. We eventually realized that while keto had its benefits, it wasn't the ultimate solution for us. We moved towards a more nuanced approach, combining elements of Paleo and keto with a focus on ingredient quality and avoiding processed foods. A pivotal moment came when I wanted to experiment with the carnivore diet. Having learned from past experiences, I approached this transition with more caution, suggesting a trial period rather than an immediate switch. This experiment taught us valuable lessons about the benefits of an animal-based diet while still incorporating seasonal fruits and the least toxic plants. Kathy's perspective on these changes has evolved, especially as she seeks information from other influencers and sources. For instance, she discovered that women tolerate cold exposure differently than men, leading us to adjust our cold plunge temperatures accordingly. During our conversation, we also discuss the broader challenges of maintaining a healthy lifestyle in modern society, such as the convenience of processed foods and the social pressure to conform. Kathy highlights the difficulties of preparing healthy meals and dealing with criticism at social gatherings. Lastly, we touch on the rewarding yet demanding aspects of homesteading, including growing our own food and raising animals. While it's not always easy, the benefits of fresh, homegrown produce and the satisfaction of self-sufficiency make it worthwhile. Join us as we share our insights and strategies for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, the importance of adaptability, and the ongoing journey of discovering what works best for our family. I used to be a major CrossFitter, spending multiple days per week in the box. But lately, I've been cutting back on CrossFit workouts and spending less time in the gym, instead prioritizing daily walks with the dog, manual labor around the homestead, and experimenting with innovative resistance training using X3 bands.  In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, I'll tell you about my current regimen and explain why I increasingly focus on balancing intense workouts with natural, ancestral practices.  I'll also explain how I augment these practices with modern technology, like cold plunges and red light therapy, and how I use supplements like creatine, collagen, colostrum, and a limited number of plant-based products to help enhance my testosterone levels, support my gut health, bolster my athletic performance and improve my skin's appearance. Tune in to learn how you can integrate these principles into your own routine for a healthier, more balanced life. What if I told you that lard could be the next big thing in skincare? Charles Mayfield, the founder of Farrow Skincare and a veteran in regenerative farming, says that because lard is so similar to human sebum (one of the skin's natural oils), it can be an incredibly effective moisturizer that the skin readily absorbs, providing deep nourishment without exposing yourself to the harsh and dangerous chemicals typically found in commercial skincare products.  In this episode, he joins us to talk about how he discovered lard's surprising benefits, as well as his journey from conceptualizing Farrow to launching it, highlighting the meticulous R&D process and the challenges of maintaining product integrity.  We also discuss the stark differences between industrially raised pork and pork from pastured pigs, emphasizing the health implications of each. The conversation explores the historical context of pig farming and how modern practices have drifted from traditional methods that prioritized animal welfare and environmental sustainability. Join us as we unpack the fascinating world of pigs, pork, and lard, and discover why lard-based skincare might just revolutionize your health routine. Whether you're curious about the best ways to source high-quality pork or are looking to upgrade your skincare regimen, this episode has something for you. 56: The Shocking Consequences of Outsourcing Your Food Supply

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 31, 2024 22:35

Outsourcing food production is not only foolish but downright irresponsible, considering how vital food is to our health and well-being. In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, I'll explain why growing your own food — as opposed to blindly trusting faceless corporations with your nourishment — is crucial for truly healthy living. In short, many staples of the standard American diet are produced in ways that deeply degrade their nutritional value (and in some cases, actually make the food harmful).  For example, store-bought chicken is often bathed in chlorine and contains high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) from the birds' diet, leading to inflammation in your body.  Pasteurized dairy, stripped of bioactive ingredients and beneficial bacteria through the pasteurization process, amounts to junk food.  Raw honey isn't exempt either, as it's often contaminated with microplastics and chemicals from plastic foundations and treatments used in commercial beekeeping.  Even the best store-bought pastured eggs have been washed in chemicals, and the porous eggshells can allow residues to seep into the eggs you consume. Join me in this episode as I talk about how to get involved in growing your own food, including tips and practical steps you can take to start your journey towards a healthier, more self-sufficient lifestyle. Why is sugar so addictive, and how can you break free from its grasp? In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, we explore the complex relationship between sugar, cravings, and our overall well-being.  It's not just about diet. Emotional and psychological factors play significant roles in how we interact with food, and particularly sugar. In fact, today's guest Danielle Daem says that sugar's impact on our brain's dopamine centers can be as powerful as hard drugs like cocaine and heroin, leading to cycles of cravings and crashes that affect our mood, energy levels, and our long-term health. A certified health coach who specializes in sugar addiction recovery, as well as the host of the Beyond Sugar Freedom podcast, Daem explains why processed foods and simple carbohydrates wreak havoc on our metabolic health, causing issues like blood sugar dysregulation, hormonal imbalances, and even mental health challenges. Importantly, she also shares practical strategies for overcoming sugar cravings by addressing both the physical and emotional roots of sugar addiction. This episode is packed with valuable information about why sugar is harmful, how to stop eating it, and what to eat instead.  In this episode: 00:00 - Intro 01:47 - The problem with sugar 05:00 - Whole foods vs. processed sugars 08:33 - Blood sugar fluctuations are a problem 10:05 - Energy sources 12:05 - Cravings and the gut-brain connection 15:58 - The importance of salt 20:28 - Emotional and psychological aspects of cravings 28:42 - Strategies for overcoming cravings 32:52 - Grounding and being present 33:55 - The benefits of cold plunging 36:56 - Impact of menstrual cycle on cravings 44:19 - You're not broken 46:35 - Authenticity and childhood conditioning 54:42 - Outro

54: How Diet Impacts Your Body Odor!

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 17, 2024 19:47

In this episode I dive into the fascinating connection between diet and body odor, sharing personal anecdotes and scientific insights to help you understand how what you eat can influence how you smell. There are two main types of sweat glands: eccrine glands and apocrine glands. Eccrine glands produce a watery, odorless sweat that helps regulate body temperature, while apocrine glands (found in areas like the armpits and groin) secrete a thicker fluid that's rich in proteins and lipids. When the fluid produced by apocrine glands interacts with skin bacteria, it leads to body odor. Diet can influence which glands are more active and how their secretions interact with your skin. Consuming a diet high in processed foods and sugars can lead to increased activity of apocrine glands, whereas a diet that's rich in meat and low in processed foods supports a healthier skin microbiome (and thus, less smell). Plus, certain foods (like garlic and onions) can add sulfur compounds to sweat, exacerbating your BO. In my personal experience and experiments, following an animal-based diet — combined with cutting out antibacterial soaps that can disrupt the skin's microbiome — has reduced my body odor so significantly that I no longer have to wear deodorant. For those still needing a deodorant, I'll share my experience with a natural, beef tallow-based deodorant from Nose to Tail that is effective and made from non-toxic ingredients. This episode is a must-listen for anyone struggling with body odor or who is looking to understand the deeper connections between diet, bacteria, and personal hygiene. My guest for this episode is Ben Salem, a real estate developer who stumbled into the EMF mitigation business out of concern for his kids' health. Ben shares his journey from a worried parent to the founder of WaveBlock, a company dedicated to reducing harmful radiation from everyday devices.  WaveBlock is a sticker that you attach to your devices, which then works to disperse rather than block radiation, making it an effective and user-friendly solution for mitigating EMF exposure without completely disconnecting from modern conveniences.  Ben and I talk about the distinction between natural EMFs and the man-made ones that saturate our modern environment (including why this exposure is a growing concern), as well as the key differences between ionizing and non-ionizing radiation (and why the latter, despite being less understood, can still pose significant health risks).  Ben's hands-on approach, including converting his office into a Faraday cage for testing, highlights the lengths he's gone to ensure the effectiveness of his products. And his insight into how children are especially vulnerable to EMF exposure due to their thinner skulls is eye-opening. If you've ever wondered about the invisible waves that permeate our lives and how to protect yourself and your loved ones, this episode is packed with valuable insights and practical advice.  And if you're new to the topic, make sure to read my article about how EMFs impact your health for a deep dive into the science.
