Elvis Presley's self-titled debut album, released on March 23, 1956, is a landmark in rock and roll history. As the first rock album to top the Billboard charts, it helped launch Presley into superstardom and solidified his status as a cultural icon. The album blends rockabilly, rhythm and blues, country, and pop, showcasing Presley's dynamic vocal style and magnetic stage presence. With hits like "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Tutti Frutti," alongside heartfelt ballads such as "I Love You Because," the record captures the raw energy and rebellious spirit of early rock and roll. fWotD Episode 2805: Elvis Presley Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 8 January 2025 is Elvis Presley.Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977), known mononymously as Elvis, was an American singer and actor. Known as the "King of Rock and Roll", he is regarded as one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century. Presley's energized performances and interpretations of songs, and sexually provocative performance style, combined with a singularly potent mix of influences across color lines during a transformative era in race relations, brought both great success and initial controversy.Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi; his family relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, when he was 13. His music career began there in 1954, at Sun Records with producer Sam Phillips, who wanted to bring the sound of African-American music to a wider audience. Presley, on guitar and accompanied by lead guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, was a pioneer of rockabilly, an uptempo, backbeat-driven fusion of country music and rhythm and blues. In 1955, drummer D. J. Fontana joined to complete the lineup of Presley's classic quartet and RCA Victor acquired his contract in a deal arranged by Colonel Tom Parker, who managed him for the rest of his career. Presley's first RCA Victor single, "Heartbreak Hotel", was released in January 1956 and became a number-one hit in the US. Within a year, RCA Victor would sell ten million Presley singles. With a series of successful television appearances and chart-topping records, Presley became the leading figure of the newly popular rock and roll; though his performative style and promotion of the then-marginalized sound of African Americans led to him being widely considered a threat to the moral well-being of white American youth. In November 1956, Presley made his film debut in Love Me Tender. Drafted into military service in 1958, he relaunched his recording career two years later with some of his most commercially successful work. Presley held few concerts, however, and guided by Parker, proceeded to devote much of the 1960s to making Hollywood films and soundtrack albums, most of them critically derided. Some of Presley's most famous films included Jailhouse Rock (1957), Blue Hawaii (1961), and Viva Las Vegas (1964). In 1968, he returned to the stage in the acclaimed NBC television comeback special Elvis, which led to an extended Las Vegas concert residency and a string of highly profitable tours. In 1973, Presley gave the first concert by a solo artist to be broadcast around the world, Aloha from Hawaii. However, years of prescription drug abuse and unhealthy eating severely compromised his health, and Presley died unexpectedly in August 1977 at his Graceland estate at the age of 42.Presley is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with sale estimates ranging from 500 million records to over a billion worldwide. He was commercially successful in many genres, including pop, country, rock and roll, rockabilly, rhythm and blues, adult contemporary, and gospel. He won three Grammy Awards, received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at age 36, and has been inducted into multiple music halls of fame. He holds several records, including the most RIAA-certified gold and platinum albums, the most albums charted on the Billboard 200, the most number-one albums by a solo artist on the UK Albums Chart, and the most number-one singles by any act on the UK Singles Chart. In 2018, Presley was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:58 UTC on Wednesday, 8 January 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Elvis Presley on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Niamh.

On this episode of The Construction Record Podcast, Calgary Construction Association president Bill Black speaks with digital media editor Warren Frey about the many delays and governmental clashes affecting the City of Calgary's Green Line light-rail transit project. Alberta premier Danielle Smith recently said she wants the project to proceed as originally envisioned and expressed concerns the current project is not cost-effective. Black does not want to take sides on the design of the project or see it devolve into a political battle as he expressed during several media interviews but expressed concerns the conflict might sideline the local construction industry. He pointed to smaller member firms using the Green Line as an “anchor project” for their work being adversely affected by funding battles at the government level and that the uncertainty surrounding the project undermines confidence within the local industry when working on big projects. Label: Hi 2018Year: 1959Condition: M-Price: $25.00Of course, it was Part 2 that became a huge hit for Bill Black and his Combo in late 1959. If you own only one Bill Black single, this is the one. As many of you know, Black (who was white) was the bass player who recorded with Elvis Presley on most (if not all) of his early Sun singles, along with Scott Moore on guitar and D.J. Fontana on drums. "Smokie" was his first solo single (or at least the first to chart), and the A side is quite a bit different--more upbeat--than the hit B side. Note: This beautiful copy comes in a vintage Hi Records factory sleeve. The audio is very close to Mint.

Bill Black has been in the pension administration business for over 40 years and helps clients work toward their retirement objectives. He works with both individual and small business owners in the areas of benefits, retirement planning, and business planning. Bill and his team have the ability to offer a wide range of financial products (tax-sheltered plans, mutual funds) to help his clients meet their retirement needs. Helping employees save for retirement is getting a little easier this year. In this episode, Bill shares some updates to tax codes that give business owners more tax credits for employee savings plans. With these updates, business owners will either create qualified plans of their own or participate in a state-sponsored plan. But it's important to note that state plans come with some baggage that might be burdensome for employers who don't already have their employees enrolled in a plan. We'll go over what the new tax credits are, the difference between state plans and employer plans, and the rules and penalties associated with them. Bill later explains the differences between SIMPLE plans and 401k plans and the benefits of enrolling in these types of savings plans for both employees and employers. Join us to get up to date on these new tax credits so your business can unlock new tax savings this year. What you will learn in this episode: The new credits available to business owners in 2024 Taking advantage of the retroactive rule for plans started in 2024 States that already have qualified plans and the rules around them Penalties associated with not participating in, or creating your own savings plans for employees Converting to a different plan if you already have one Deductions with SIMPLE plans vs. 401(k) plans Is automatic enrollment actually automatic? In this episode, The Annuity Man and Bill Black discuss: The problem with indexed policies that agents don't often talk about Backtested numbers in the life insurance side Insurance is not an investment How do hybrid life insurance policies work Key Takeaways: An indexed policy is a loan, which is supposedly non-taxable. However, people aren't told that interest is being paid out of the cash value of the policy and when it gets overwhelmed, the policy collapses under its own weight and becomes a forgiven loan. Forgiven loans are taxable as ordinary income in the year of that forgiveness. When buying an indexed policy whether in life insurance or in an annuity, it's best to get experts involved in the process. Don't swallow the pitch, don't trust backtested numbers. Trust experts who will inform you of both the limitations and benefits of a policy. Life insurance is not necessarily an investment. When you buy retail policies, you buy them for risk coverage and liquidity. Consider the policies where you can pay the smallest amount of premium possible while getting the most coverage. If you buy a life insurance policy with a survivor benefit and you end up not using your available long-term care coverage, your beneficiary gets the survivors benefit. In Milwaukee on Sept. 4, 1964, the acts preceding the Beatles were Bill Black's Combo, Clarence “Frogman” Henry, the Exciters, and Jackie DeShannon. One of the questions I asked Jackie was about her experiences during the Beatles tour.

The Construction Record Podcast – Episode 272: The 2023 Alberta election On this episode of The Construction Record podcast, digital media editor Warren Frey speaks with Progressive Contractors Association president Paul de Jong, Independent Contractors and Businesses Association of Alberta president Mike Martens and Calgary Construction Association president Bill Black about what they want to see in terms of construction industry policy whether the United Conservative Party or the Alberta NDP win on May 29. Both de Jong and Martens reflected on some of the policies during the NDP's previous tenure that worked well with the industry, how construction adapted to the UCP's victory in 2019 and the subsequent uncertainty after Jason Kenney reigned as leader and was replaced by Danielle Smith. They also expressed what they'd like to see in terms of future policy whether Smith or NDP leader Rachel Notley take the reigns on May 29, what they're cautious about in terms of both party platforms. Black added no matter who wins the administrative bureaucracy will remain the same and that industry and government have to work together for the betterment of the province. You can listen to The Construction Record on the Daily Commercial News and Journal of Commerce websites as well as on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Amazon Music's podcast section. **Every episode of Macro N Cheese is accompanied by a full transcript and an “Extras” section with links to further resources. Check them out at realprogressives.org/macro-n-cheese-podcast It's been two years since Bill Black was last on with Steve. We've invited several guests to talk about the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, so it only makes sense to ask our whistleblower friend to weigh in. Bill and Steve discuss what it means to be too big to fail. When an institution is too big to fail, the creditors get bailed out, but then, Bill says, “really really bad things have happened.” “...they hold the economy hostage. And nowadays they hold the global economy hostage. And if you hold the global economy hostage, you hold global politics hostage. So that needs to be fixed. And the way to fix that is not to allow such institutions, right? Duh,” The episode looks at the capture of government by the financial industry. Bill talks about his experience during the savings and loan crisis and the transition from somewhat effective regulatory apparatus to a fully cock-blocked system. (Our words, not his.) Bill Black is a professor of Economics and Law at the University of Missouri – Kansas City (UMKC) and the Distinguished Scholar in Residence for Financial Regulation at the University of Minnesota Law School. He is a serial whistleblower and authored The Best Way to Rob a Bank is to Own One.
The legendary regulator and white-collar criminologist William K. Black explains why, contrary to corporate media coverage, the bank failures set off by the Silicon Valley Bank crash were absolutely not sudden, unexpected, or unforeseeable, and why none of the regulations Democrats or Republicans are talking about would have stopped them.

In this episode, The Annuity Man and Bill Black discuss: Who needs long-term care? Transferring wealth to your heirs tax-free Maximizing your death What good insurance companies do Key Takeaways: If you live long enough where you aren't able to feed, bathe, transport, or dress yourself anymore, you're going to wish you had long-term care set in place. Long-term care benefit is tax-free, and so is the death benefit. You can set it up so that if you don't spend the benefit or only spend some of it, the rest will go to your beneficiaries or heirs. Even if you don't use it, your heirs will still benefit from it. Death is a one-time strategy, so maximize it. Get insurance so that when you go, you'll cover your heirs with a tax-free transfer of wealth instead of leaving them a financial burden. Good insurance companies don't take any money until they are ready to offer their policy to you. That way, there wouldn't be any burden or pressure on the client. You'll only pay whenever you decide you're happy with the contract. "The percentage of the people that are going to need long term care is somewhere around 60-70%... long term care [is] you can't do two out of the six activities of daily living, you can't feed yourself, you can't bathe yourself, you can't transport yourself, you can't dress yourself." — Bill Black Connect with Bill Black: Website: http://www.whbco.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/whblack/ Connect with The Annuity Man: Website: http://theannuityman.com/ Email: Stan@TheAnnuityMan.com Book: Owner's Manuals: https://www.stantheannuityman.com/how-do-annuities-work YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCXKKxvVslbeGAlEc5sra2g Get a Quote Today: https://www.stantheannuityman.com/annuity-calculator!
