Just found an old prank call I made to Ian Collins years ago. Some lad had called up a talent contest Ian was having and thought he sounded like Ronan Keating. Collins was a close friend of Blythe's for more than three decades. Interview by the Revd Malcolm Doney, a writer, broadcaster, and Anglican priest, who lives in Suffolk. This time, we covered the final installment of Science Seal Delivered Summer for 2024, diving into "Signed, Sealed, Delivered: A Tale of Three Letters". Here's a synopsis of the ideas and insights we discussed on our podcast. If you haven't tuned in yet, we'd love for you to join us and become a part of the conversation! What We Liked Norman's Character Development: We absolutely adored seeing Norman step up as the marital mentor to Oliver. His growth throughout the series has been remarkable, and his easy and sincere advice made those scenes shine. Normalization of Therapy: Both of us appreciated how the movie normalized therapy for healthy relationships. The depiction of Shane, Oliver, Rita, and Norman going through therapy sessions made it clear that seeking help is a healthy and necessary step for any relationship. Sweet, Small Moments: Several little moments made us smile—from Norman's adorable comment about the sonogram picture to Shane and Oliver's flirty interaction post-honeymoon. These touches gave the film warmth and humor. What We Wished For Character Consistency: There were a few moments that felt out of character, especially Oliver's unempathetic interaction with Charlie. It seemed like an entirely different writer had come in an...

‘I would like to be remembered as a good writer and a good man . . . Writers are observers. We are natural lookers, watchers . . . it seems to me quite wonderful that I have so long been able to make a living from something I love so much.' So wrote the writer, editor and famed chronicler of rural life Ronald Blythe for the Mail on Sunday in 2004. That Ronald (or Ronnie, as he preferred to be known), who died aged 100 in early 2023, will be remembered as a good writer is irrefutable. Many Slightly Foxed listeners will know and love not only Akenfield – his bestselling 1969 portrait of a fictionalized East Anglian village – and the ‘Word from Wormingford' column for the Church Times but also his unparalleled collection of short stories, poems, histories, novels and essays and, most recently, his year-long diary published as Next to Nature, which celebrates the slow perpetual turn of the farming year, the liturgical calendar and the rhythms of village life. In this episode Ronnie's fellow writers and friends, Julia Blackburn and his biographer Ian Collins, lead us down the rough-hewn track to the ancient yeoman's cottage he inherited from the artist John Nash and into the nooks and crannies of his private world, tracing a life well lived and well written. We meet the changeling boy obsessed with books and nature and the self-taught youth whose good looks and charisma caused queues at the Colchester Library reference desk where he worked until he was discovered by the painter Christine Nash. It was she, recognizing his rare talent, who insisted he leave his job to pursue writing fulltime. We track Ronnie's rich literary life path through his friends' personal recollections, touching on tales of mid-winter meetings with E. M. Forster and an unlikely tryst with Patricia Highsmith. We muse on his spirituality and sexuality, his great love for life and his deep connection to the rural world with all its harshness and all its beauty, before heading for Bottengoms Farm where we hear how this great man and great writer saw out his last days in the company of good books and close friends. For our book-lovers' day out we head to the quintessential English cottage of Ronnie's hero, the poet and keen gardener John Clare. And, to finish, a round-up of book recommendations including another East Anglian delight in Adrian Bell's A Countryman's Spring Notebook, an unusual fishing memoir by the writer of the Killing Eve series that's about much more than just fishing, and the intricately plotted revenge tale No Name by Wilkie Collins, one of Ronnie's favourite writers. British artist John Craxton once said; 'Life is more important than art'. He was a free spirit with no obsession for fame or money. All he wanted to do was to live under the sunshine and paint pleasure. So, in 1946 he visited Greece and it was love at first sight. Three years later, he saw Istanbul and fell for its culture and colours. And just recently, our presenter Esra Durust was joined at Istanbul's Mesher by writer Ian Collins who told her more about the late artist's decades-long obsession with the Mediterranean.
A retired British Army colonel, a senior Taliban leader and a former UK national security adviser are among those criticising the Duke of Sussex over disclosures that he killed 25 people in Afghanistan. Colonel Tim Collins, known for a pre-battle speech he made in Iraq, said Harry has now turned against his “other family, the military”. Anas Haqqani, Taliban leader in Afghanistan, condemned the duke for describing those he killed as “chess players”, but added that not many who killed Afghans “have your decency to reveal their conscience and confess to their war crimes”. Harry wrote that flying six missions during his second tour of duty on the front line in 2012 to 2013 resulted in “the taking of human lives”, of which he was neither proud nor ashamed. Born into a cultured and well-connected bohemian family in London, the painter John Craxton (1922-2009) yearned from a very early age to live and work in Greece. He achieved his goal and enduring joy coloured his ensuing pictures – radiant images of a world where myth survived in everyday existence On this episode of The PastCast, Ian Collins discusses his article in the latest issue of Minerva magazine (also available on The Past website), in which he surveys the life and work of Craxton, an artist with ‘a genius for being in the right place at the right time.' Today on #mensexpleasure, I chat with Ian Collins. Ian has spent his career working with organisations on some of the riskiest frontiers to build more resilient and reliable systems that keep planes in skies, prevent oil rigs from blowing up, nuclear plants from melting down, getting people home safely to their families and keeping the environment free from harm. What he has discovered is that similar principles that create the conditions for safety in workplaces can be just as applicable to creating safety in relationships. He now helps men learn the tools and resources to create trust and safety, taking their relationships from struggling and stagnant to being passionate, healthy, balanced and loving. The two of us talk about Ian's work and how he translates occupational safety principles into relationship advice. In this episode we speak to Ian Collins. You know you're in for a good episode when you struggle to choose a title and this was the case for this episode. I didn't know whether to choose the time Ian sent flowers to the leader of North Korea or perhaps the time he took his mugger to a strip club. I went for the former, but I think both would've summed up the travel stories and anecdotes that Ian has to tell. Originally from Perth, currently in Bali, Ian has managed to make a career out of travelling all over the world to around 85 countries and has worked in over 40 of those in places such as Libya and Bali, as well as living in cities like Vancouver, Barcelona, Cape Town and Singapore. Ian took a very practical approach to choosing his countries, considering 5 points: the country of his passport, legal residence, business base, asset haven and playground. His tales include presenting flowers to the eponymous dictator, listening to an oracle on where to move to next, taking a man who attempted to mug him to a strip club, and trying to calm down irate Libyans. His choices include one that is increasingly popular with digital nomads, a dictator-led country that few are able to enter and a place that is often voted the most beautiful city as well as being one of the most deadly in the world. Yep, this is "Living on the Edge" stuff. Ian is an Australian but currently living in London for this moment in time. He has lived on 5 continents, so chances are that he'll be going somewhere else quite soon.He is an International Safety and Performance Coach (for humans and organizations), which he explains in detail on this podcast episode. In one sentence, it is basically the science of systems-driven behavior and understanding of how and why people make mistakes.I always thought that there was some science reasoning behind my occasional decision making process. This occupation involves travel and sometimes to places where most of us would not even consider for a split second.Listen to why he was involved in some admirable work in North Korea and yes he did send a bouquet of flowers to the country's glorious leader as a goodwill gesture. With near misses in Libya and the Congo that could have ended badly, he has swam with great white sharks, climbed an active volcano and consumed jungle plant medicine to name a few.His life is one big adventure, but even though some of his activities are somewhat risky, it is all educational and fulfilling. Starlet Henderson, the host of Thought Leaders To Watch, explores the incredible work of Ian Collins, Managing Director of Safety Coach International. Throughout the episode, Ian dives into the deeper behavioural reasons as to why mistakes occur in the workplace. From having some close calls himself in his past career as a miner in Western Australia, to coming close to facing death himself when working in the shipyards out of Singapore. These massive moments in Ian's life impacted him to pursue human and organisational performance. Taking a day at a time to really help organizations, look at their systems and understand how their systems are ultimately driving people to take actions that are leading to bad outcomes. https://www.safetycoach.com/ (www.safetycoach.com) At Change Empire we support and guide you from your idea right through the planning and writing process, so you know exactly what to do and have the accountability you need to get it done. Police pensions are at the top of the list to discuss in our inaugural FedCast with National Police Federation Chair John Apter. Presented by Ian Collins and with guest National Police Federation Secretary Alex Duncan, the trio tackle the current situation with pensions following the Court of Appeal recently ruling that the introduction of transitional protections to judges’ and firefighters’ pensions was not a proportionate means to achieving a legitimate aim. The complex issues surrounding the judgement and our position are explained clearly answering questions including ‘Why did the Federation not challenge the pension changes like the Fire Brigades Union?’ and ‘Will you admit to making a mistake for not challenging?’ The episode also covers officer welfare, our pay challenge, campaigns and the pair’s first months in their new roles – Mr Apter was elected by members in August 2018 and Mr Duncan was selected by the National Board in October 2018 – during which time the Federation achieved legislative change in respect to assaults on police officers and other emergency workers. We take questions from members – via twitter @PFEW_HQ or email communications@polfed.org – so please do get involved.www.polfed.org/fedcast
