Behold – the late, great Edward Lionheart, a Shakespearean actor whose performances in Julius Caesar, Troilus and Cressida, Othello, Cymbeline, and others left him the laughingstock of London theatre critics, is dead.  And yet somehow, someone is knocking off said critics one at a time in truly Shakespearean fashion… albeit with slight alterations to the text.  Shylock may have wanted his pound his flesh – this killer takes the heart.  Joan of Arc might have burned at the stake – this killer fries his victims in a hair salon.  Peregrine Devlin, head of the London Critics Circle, is baffled, as are the police.  And yet – the order of the killings bear a striking resemblance to Lionheart's last repertory season.  What's going on with the Thames-side meths drinkers that have taken up residence in the crumbling Burbage Theatre?  And what might Edward's daughter, Edwina, have to do with everything?  Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend us your ears – for herein lies the tale of the deceased actor who set out to exact revenge, and succeeded, and the rest – is silence. When I asked this question, I was a little bit concerned that everyone was just going to agree that being good at communication was the top skill and that would be that. But it wasn't even on the list of things these three guys brought to the discussion.   Mark Iorio started us off by saying resourcefulness was a top skill. The ability to be open-minded and take on new ideas and solutions.   Ian Hendry agreed saying that keeping your child-like creativity was a must. Being able to use things in non-traditional ways. His second thing was being resilient, able to keep going in the face of adversity.   Pascal Derrien said having the intent and being intentional about success leads to attaining it. Is that a skill? Depends how you define it. But it certainly important.    I then asked if these things were skills you could learn or if they were things you had to be born with. That turned out to be a much more difficult question to answer. You'll have to listen to the conversation to see what the panelists thought.   What do you think are the key skills to being successful in business and are they born or learned?   Connect with the panelists: Pascal Derrien: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pascalderrien/ CEO of the nonprofit Migraine Ireland and an avid athlete   Ian Hendry: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ian-robert-hendry/ Owner of Elevated Elements where he helps businesses upgrade their lighting correctly the first time to reduced their electrical bill and get the best ROI   Mark Iorio: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ioriomark/ Team Building and Culture Alignment Consultant, TV Host on RVNTV, Go-Giver   Dr Robyn Odegaard: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robynodegaard/ Known as the Mental MacGyver. Summer is finally here, so Andy & Martin are off on their hols to Crete to spend some time at Shepherd's Bar in Agios Nickolaos! Back in 1972 The Lotus Eaters was the flagship new BBC2 drama and the first of Michael J. Bird's quartet of Mediterranean-set serials. Starring Ian Hendry and Wanda Ventham, the series focused on the failing marriage of Erik and Ann Shepherd and the lives and loves of the community meeting at their taverna. What no-one expects, including the viewer, is that Ann is a sleeper agent who is about to be activated, nor that despite this revelation such a development is not always going to be the focus of the show. Instead Bird's serial is about anyone who is running from something, looking for a place to start again and the threat that if you eat the fruit of the lotus you will never leave... As well as Bird, the scripts were written by David Weir, David Fisher and Jack Ronder. The series was directed by Cyril Coke, Douglas Camfield, David Cunliffe and Viktors Ritelis, and produced by Anthony Read and Michael Glynn The Lotus Eaters was a new direction for UK TV drama which helped the package holiday market no end. Notably, it would find itself to be life imitating art, as Ian Hendry, just like Erik Shepherd, continued his battles with drink, love and life. With numerous other excellent regular and guest actors - Stefan Gryff, Sylvia Coleridge, Thorley Walters, Carol Cleveland, Maurice Denham, Susan Engel, Timothy Carlton, Anouska Hempel, Godfrey James, Alethea Charlton, John Savident and Julia Goodman - this Cretan-set series is a fascinating exploration of love, motivation, trust, deceit and spying, with a large side order of raki. So it's time to get you swimsuit on, slap on some lotion and get in the back garden. Put this in your ears for a couple of hours and float back in time to the Seventies. Next Time: Moonbase 3

It can hard to recognize that the “status quo” in your life just isn't for you — we all get used to our default routines and convince ourselves that our lives are limited to fixed possibilities. But sometimes we get an itch inside that tells us we need to have something more. Once you've resolved to obtain it — whatever it is — how do you go about doing so?   My guests all have admirable experience recognizing and transforming their status quo. I asked them to share a bit of their insights on this edition of Quick Hits.   Multimedia journalist Daisy Cedeño told us about how she pursued her career despite resistance from her parents: “You have to first be uncomfortable with the status quo. When something is bothering you, you feel uncomfortable, you're not at peace, that's when you realize, ‘I am not in a place where I'm growing.'”   Healthcare expert Dr. Laura Dowling agreed with that definition of the status quo: “It means no learning or growing is happening…I escape that dead zone by learning something new, trying something that I've never tried before or challenging myself to do a little better in a particular area.”   Ian Hendry, the owner of Elevated Elements, shared with us about how he was able to grow his business, despite starting it at the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic: “Fear of no money coming or how long it might take was a huge thing. But to get where you want to go, sometimes you have to take that leap.   Or as recovering academic Dr. Cole Galloway beautifully summed up: “You have the power to co-create.”   I so enjoyed speaking to and learning from these four great minds.   How do you recognize and escape the status quo?    Connect with the panelists: Daisy Cedeño MS:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/daisy-cede%C3%B1o-ms/ Ian Hendry: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ian-robert-hendry/ Cole Galloway, PT, PhD: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cole-galloway-1ba715107/ Dr. Laura Dowling: https://www.linkedin.com/in/laura-dowling-dm/ Dr Robyn Odegaard: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robynodegaard/   Want a summary of the Quick Hits I post every week, plus the links to the LinkedIn pages of each of the panelist to show up in your in-box every week? Sometimes I wonder if it is hard to be thoughtful; to consider how words may affect someone.  How can you phrase an opinion in a kind way that doesn't lose the point of your message while not causing emotional harm?  Are there times when expressing an opinion directly, regardless of impact, is the best approach?  How does it vary based on the audience — whether at work or at home? In public or private? I put these questions to my guests Ian Hendry of Elevated Elements; Terri Hill, the co-creator of the Emerging Entrepreneurs Academy; and Stewart Wiggins Induna Advisers.  Do you think some people internalize the belief that the truth hurts and use it to be thoughtless?  What do you do when someone behaves that way? First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on April 24th 2022 A little over sixty years ago, a television series began that would, in many ways, come to encapsulate a particular view of nineteen sixties Britain that never really went away. It was so popular in certain countries that this particular image of Britain and the British seems to have stuck in their minds and shaped their perception of us ever since. Or perhaps one version of it has, anyway, because THE AVENGERS, the series PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI, is joining me to talk about today, went through several incarnations – and lapel carnations – as it progressed through most of the 1960s from its grey, grimy, and gritty origins in 1961, to its colourful, almost pop-art, last hurrah in 1969, and, in many ways, could be said to almost reflect that transformational decade on screen like almost no other television series of its time. Featuring PATRICK MACNEE as John Steed, a charmingly eloquent, and dapper, spy, who wears a bowler hat sometimes cast in stainless steel, and who carries a rolled umbrella which sometimes conceals a sword, who spends his professional career dealing with diabolical master minds intent upon some fiendish, eccentric, and freedom-threatening plot, usually with the assistance of a strong, plucky woman who seems far more adept at handling the rough stuff than he could ever hope to be. CATHY GALE, EMMA PEEL, and TARA KING were those fabulous, ground-breaking, and astonishingly independent women, and were played by three actors destined to become almost as iconic as the series itself: HONOR BLACKMAN, DIANA RIGG, and LINDA THORSEN. Although those other, grittier incarnations, also featured JULIA STEVENS as VENUS SMITH, JON ROLLASON as DR MARTIN KING, and the sublime and ridiculously talented IAN HENDRY who, as DR DAVID KEEL, was there right at the start, might be the person we have to thank for the series even existing at all, but who then chose to leave to pursue other career options, leaving JOHN STEED to step into the breech, and become the calm centre around which the series would carry on though such astonishing changes, not only in the lead actors, but from the technical point of view of switching from live studio videotape, to black and white, and later colour film, and a very successful penetration into the American market. In fact, if any show could be said to demonstrate the evolution of British television in the 1960s, I think THE AVENGERS may be the one that shows it off best, so much so that anyone who watched the 1961 version would barely recognise it as the same show if they tuned in again in 1969, with MOTHER and RHONNDA adding to the cast of eccentric regulars to battle each week with the very cream of 1960s acting talent. This other brainchild of Canadian Television supremo SYDNEY NEWMAN might not be your idea of what the Britain of the 1960s was really like, but it certainly is an image that has persisted since it first aired back in 1961 as a replacement for another series featuring its main star as a police surgeon, right through to its final episode in 1969, and the series was so internationally successful that it even got a fairly successful two year reimagining in the mid-1970s featuring PURDEY and GAMBIT as played by JOANNA LUMLEY and GARETH HUNT. PAUL is unashamedly a fan of the final year featuring TARA KING, so our conversation does inevitably spend a lot of time covering that era, but we do our best to give you a broader overview on our way there. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Thomas and Scott are back to cover season two episode five of The Avengers, and the snooze fest known as “Mission to Montreal”. Were introduced to Dr. King, a pale, stone faced substitute for Ian Hendry in an episode that barely takes place anywhere near Montreal. A train wreck of a Hollywood starlet is taking a ship to her hometown in the Great White North, but first there will be some international intrigue along the way and pills, so many pills. Dr. King, master of the expressionless gaze is infiltrating as the ingénues personal physician and pharmacist and he acts as if hes taken some of his own medicine, but we get some great side characters and Steed as a ships steward serving everyone else the champagne for a change. Come along for the trip and suffer with us through this one, Venus Smith is back next month to make the pain go away with some songs. Its a tale of corporate boardroom intrigue and murder this month as Thomas and Scott recap “Bullseye”. Its Cathy Gale doing all the heavy lifting for Steed this time as she infiltrates a gun manufacturing company that seems to be having a major problem with their stockholders being the fatal victims of their product. Fear not, Cathy is there to solve the mystery and, presumably, to make Steed a healthy stock profit. Is it the Avengers version of Gordon Geckko who is trying to take over the company? Is it the mild mannered secretary? Is it the creepy board member who cant stop touching women inappropriately? Is it Cathy Gale? All will be revealed as The Avengers give us this great Honor Blackman centered episode. So keep your powder dry and SELL, SELL, SELL when the Bear Market turns into a Bullseye Market (sorry, not sorry) on this months With Umbrella, Charm and Bowler. Thomas and Scott don their masks and cover The Decapod, which is a ten tentacle cephalopod, but thats not important right now. What is important is that Steed and singing companion Venus Smith have to protect a rather colorful leader of a Balkan country who has a penchant for watching his body guards wrestle, no judgement here. Theres two, count them, two lounge songs for us to enjoy, wrestling themed murders and even Steed himself ends up in the ring. Spoiler: Randy Savage he is not. There are airport romances, airplane murders, airport drunks and bakers in peril in this episode. Plus an alternate universe France where no one has a French accent!!! Theres more bad fights, more great banter between Steed and Gale and a lot of drinking going on in this one, but sadly no champagne. Thomas and Scott tackle the first episode of season two with the bizarre and brilliant “Mr. Teddy Bear”. We get to see the seeds of The Avengers we know begin to take root with this one and we also get introduced to Steeds new companion Cathy Gale, played by the incomparable Honor Blackman. Steed and Gale face off against a gadget orientated hitman with a penchant for stuff animals, mannequin heads and little pills that go boom. Also in this episode we meet Steeds boss, his dog and learn that he really needs to lock his apartment more often. Blackman gives us a solid debut as a worldly anthropologist who in many ways steals the episode from Macnee as they match wits with the first true Avengers super villain. Bonus content includes a contest and a discussion about whether or not judo training can also be a form of foreplay. Youll find no “Endgame” here, were just getting started! Scott and Thomas cover the last episode of season one that they have access to as The Avengers deal with The Frighteners. John Steed finally joins our soon to be absent Dr. Keel to take on a company of Thugs for Hire who are set to rough up, and maybe worse, a man who just wants to be with a woman, but daddy doesnt approve. Is this a simple case of a Romeo and Juliet or are there more sinister forces at work? Will Steed save the day, or will he make Dr. Keel do the dangerous deeds? Will Thomas and Scott use half the podcast to talk about Doom Patrol again, or will they read a listener email and have a contest for our outro tag?
