Elon Musk, DOGE, and Donald Trump have waged war on USAID - the US agency that has become a lightening rod in the debate over which party is really killing democracy. SERIES 3 EPISODE 40: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:46) SPECIAL COMMENT: JD Vance blew an otherwise substantial debate with one remark that will echo through the history of presidential campaigns the way the spoofing of Gerald Ford in 1976 by Chevy Chase did ("It was my understanding there would be no math.") Fact-checked once and only once by moderators Norah O'Donnell and Margaret Brennan about the fact that the immigrants of Springfield, Ohio, are there legally, Vance seemingly summarized the entire premise of Trumpism - deceit and using it to hamstring a cowering media. He was terrified of fact-checking, enraged by fact-checking, and finally had his mike cut because he was angry and tried to dress down the moderators by saying: "The rules were you guys weren't gonna fact check." Vance did a surprisingly smooth if not always effective job of sane-washing Trump but he could have won a debate in which Tim Walz was so nervous at the beginning that I had a brief spell of 1st Debate PTSD. But Vance ultimately had only one product to sell - Trump - and only so much lipstick to put on it, or eyeliner to put on himself. As Walz regained himself, he was practical, eloquent, and managed to pull quotes out of the Bible and the Hardware Store ("my pro-tip for today is...") He warned Trump talking about crowd sizes was not what the country would need right now in the Middle East crisis (Vance barely answered; he chose instead to introduce himself; it was a tactical disaster). And he gave the top two answers of the night, insisting that Mike Pence's decision to be a "firewall" against Trump on January 6th was why Pence "isn't on this stage tonight" and then a moving, personal story about gun violence and its myriad causes that ended with "Sometimes, it's just the guns. It's just the guns." IS IT BAD THAT KELLYANNE CONWAY THINKS HER VP CANDIDATE IS NAMED “JD WALTZ?” Is she mistaking Vance for Walz? Vance for actor J.D. Walsh? The late actor J.T. Walsh? Maybe for The Last Waltz? MEANWHILE, TRUMP SEEMS TO ACCUSE KAMALA OF MURDER EXCEPT HE SCREWS UP THE PRONOUNS: He says she might as well have held a gun in a murder case. Except he says Harris let HER in and murdered HIM. He's also continuing to take credit for “being first” on the scene in the post-Helene chaos even though nobody wanted him there and all he did was start a GoFundMe, take credit for money that other people gave – and he didn't. AND IN NUZZI NUDES NEWS: NUZZI DOOZY – COURT GETS UP IN LIZZA'S BIZZA – OVER RFK RIZZ(a). CNN reports that the latest in the RFK Junior/Olivia Nuzzi story is: she has sued, and in the filing, says that the source of the leaks that got her suspended by New York Magazine for an undisclosed personal relationship with the perviest of the Kennedys was her former fiancee Ryan Lizza of Politico. When Olivia and I lived together and she still worked for The Daily Beast she frequently traveled to DCC on stories and whenever come back she'd give me a big hug and say she was sorry she took me for granted because there was the creepy guy who stalked her every time she went to Washington. ‘Do you know him,' she'd ask? ‘His name is Lizza.' Gotta run. Gotta check I have enough popcorn B-Block (25:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The WNBA players association and executive director Terry Carmichael Jackson has attacked one of the reporters who might be on the Mount Rushmore of Women's Sports in this country, Christine Brennan. And over nothing. They've slandered her and tried to get her fired. We need to boycott the WNBA until there is an apology and the executive director is fired. There's Elon Musk, who has decided that a barely intelligible video by somebody who's never heard of Roe-V-Wade “proves” Trump cares more about women. And then there's Rob Schneider, who decided to turn the heartbreaking loss of 58-year old hoops immortal Dikembe Mutumbo to brain cancer into an anti-vax point. Maybe he meant it like a joke, since none of his jokes have ever been funny. C-Block (36:15) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: I spent years arguing against Pete Rose being admitted to baseball's Hall of Fame. Then I campaigned IN FAVOR of putting him in baseball's Hall of Fame. And then in 2017 the OTHER thing happened and that's when I started campaigning again for NEVER putting him in baseball's Hall of Fame. And all Monday night and all day yesterday, otherwise intelligent people explained that Pete Rose will go into the Hall of Fame because it was a lifetime ban and no – they put him on the “permanently ineligible list.” His life is over; his place on the list is not. And everybody has FORGOTTEN what the other thing was in 2017 - in the middle of his comeback, when he had gotten far along enough in his comeback that he was a regular on the Fox Baseball pre-game show I used to anchor – Pete Rose sued the investigator whose work led to his banishment from baseball in 1989 and in the discovery up popped a sworn deposition from a woman who, to quote The Hollywood Reporter, “alleges that Rose had a relationship with her for several years, beginning before she turned 16… Rose acknowledged in court documents that he had sex with the woman but thought she was 16 at the time.” When you admit to sex with a child and your defense was I thought she was 16, you're done. THAT'S why he's not in the Hall of Fame – and won't be. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: For Civilization and Against Niceness, published by Gabriel Alfour on November 21, 2023 on LessWrong. Scott Alexander wrote a great essay, called " In Favor of Niceness, Community and Civilization". Scott is a great writer, and conveys what I love about civilization in a beautiful way. Unfortunately, the essay conflates two behaviors. Though to be fair, those two behaviors often go hand in hand: Being uncivil, as in: breaking the norms of civilization. Being mean, as in: being not-nice, unpleasant to be around. The following paragraph embodies this conflation quite well: Liberalism does not conquer by fire and sword. Liberalism conquers by communities of people who agree to play by the rules, slowly growing until eventually an equilibrium is disturbed. Its battle cry is not "Death to the unbelievers!" but "If you're nice, you can join our cuddle pile!" I love civilization! Democracies let me politically coordinate with people internationally, socially liberal systems grant me freedom to be as weird as I want in private, and economically liberal systems let me try many exotic kinds of positive-sum trades with people! None of this would be possible without civilization. I agree, Civilization is great. But I don't want to join your cuddle pile! Civilization is often about being not nice As Scott Alexander says, civilization is about "agreeing to play by the rules." But this is not about niceness. On the contrary, playing by the rules often requires being not nice. [1] While we want companies to abide by strong regulations, and not cause negative externalities (like pollution), we also do not want them to be nice to each other. This is the core of antitrust law, that aims to minimize anti-competitive practices. More concretely, the goal of companies is to capture value (make profits), while the goal of free-markets is for companies to create value for consumers. The way those two incentives are aligned is through competition. By getting companies to compete, they need to keep improving compared to other companies to keep their profits, increasing the share of the value enjoyed by consumers In other words: We want companies to compete as fiercely as possible, thereby driving quality up and pushing prices down. As Adam Smith wrote: "It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest." This is a feature of economic liberalism. Similarly, in a court of law, while we want all lawyers present to strictly adhere to their local equivalent of the Model Rules of Professional Conduct, we don't want the defense attorney and the prosecutor to be nice to each other. When younger, I could not understand attorneys that defended people who they knew were criminals. Weren't these attorneys making society strictly worse? My confusion went deeper when I learnt that they had an ethical obligation to defend people who they knew were criminals. But it makes sense: the attorney doesn't issue the final sentence, the judge does. And the judge doesn't know if the person is innocent or not, or when they're guilty, how guilty they are. To solve this, judiciary systems go through something close to an Adversarial Collaboration. Both sides need to bring forward as much evidence for their case as possible. Only then can the judge make the best decision with as much information as possible. When the defense attorney makes their case, they are not changing the sentence, they are giving more information to the judge, who then decides on the sentence. If you think about it, it is obvious: it is better for the judge to have more information. And to get there, you need people to optimize for both sides of the story, not focus on the one we already believe to be correct. This is why prosecutors and defense attorneys sh...

Florence Ashley & Carolyn Ells, “In Favor of Covering Ethically Important Cosmetic Surgeries: Facial Feminization Surgery for Transgender People” (2018) 18:12 The American Journal of Bioethics 23–25 In a recent article, Dubov & Frankel argue that facial feminization surgery should be deemed medically necessary insofar as it helps transgender people “pass” as cisgender, which is required for their wellbeing and ability to function. This peer commentary problematises their argument by pointing out how it constrains our understanding of trans embodiment to narratives of gender dysphoria, to the exclusion of narratives about gender euphoria and creative transfiguration, as well as by calling into question the value of facial feminization surgery for those who will never be able to pass as cis. With consideration to the diversity of trans experiences of the body and the variety of reasons why trans people desire facial feminization surgery, we invite policymakers to move away from justifications of insurance coverage that rely on the putative mutual exclusivity of medically necessary care and cosmetic care, arguing that aesthetic experiences of the self can be sufficiently ethically important to justify insurance coverage on their own. Welcome to Real College Talk! RCT is your destination for honest and relevant college and postsecondary conversation. We bring the best of the best to our podcast to share both their personal and professional experiences and advice regarding all things school, college, career paths, and life in general. In continuation of our #KeepItReal series with CollegeFindMe (https://collegefindme.com/), we’re joined by Samantha Savello, CollegeFindMe’s Digital Media Coordinator, to share her perspective on college and life since graduating from Brown University, changing her major, exploring gap years and career paths, and much more! Long before encountering CollegeFindMe, Samantha experienced high school in a way many of us can relate to. She was very active and ambitious to explore a variety of interests, but was challenged to narrow her focus upon entering college (2:35). She eventually majored in Hispanic Culture and Literature (5:00), through which she was able to explore her Puerto Rican heritage and even studied in Granada, Spain for a semester! However, she wasn’t always sure that her sole focus would be Spanish. Samantha shares the importance of identifying what you truly love and are passionate about – in her case, communication and languages – as you navigate your education and career (7:00). Beyond the classroom, Samantha was an accomplished writer throughout her time at Brown University (12:41). We take some time to delve into one article in particular titled, “In Favor of the Gap Year,” and discuss how current high school and college students can assess if a gap year may be right for them. We begin to wrap up with a broader discussion of how to approach the college search amidst societal pressures to judge schools based on selectivity and acceptance rates only (16:45). Our question: Does selectivity really matter? We discuss that while selective schools may have unique resources and valuable networks, you will find the most success at a school that truly aligns with your personality and goals in life, as opposed to a school that you select solely on the basis of its prestige. Samantha reminds us that regardless of where you go to college, what matters most is what you make of your experience, both in class and outside of it (18:25). Last but not least, Samantha shares some specific CollegeFindMe resources that she would have used during her own college preparation process to conduct her college search and choose the school that best fit her needs (20:20). This is where things start to get uncomfortable. We are trying actively push ourselves out of our comfort zones on this podcast, and to do that, we are inviting more guests onto the show and letting them pick the topic. Our first real guest of the second season is named Luke Phillips and he identifies as a social conservative and economic liberal, and he suggested for this episode that we talk about patriotism. Things get deep: we talk about what it means to be an American, how patriotism differs from nationalism, whether you can be a patriot and still protest and resist your country's policies, and whether this act of resistance can in and of itself be a patriotic act. Here's some more about Luke: Luke Phillips is the opinion editor of for Better Angels, a bipartisan nationwide civic organization working to bring Americans together across our political divides. He writes essays and reviews about politics, policy, and American history at publications like The American Interest, Starting Points, and American Affairs. He went to the University of Southern California, where he was a member of the USC Trojan Marching Band, and occasionally volunteers with Scouts BSA, the organization formerly known as the Boy Scouts of America. As a good millennial, he works night shifts in a restaurant and lives in his parents' basement on his voyage towards lucrative employment and away from crippling debt. Here are the articles Luke sent us in preparation for this podcast (These are not the titles, they are just Isabel's shorthand way of categorizing them): Resistance Patriotism: https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/07/resistance-patriotism-fourth-july/593344/ Patriotism vs. Nationalism: https://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/united-states/2019-02-05/new-americanism-nationalism-jill-lepore (This article is behind a paywall - if you would like to access it, I am going to sneakily provide you with the credentials to my alma mater's subscription: user is serials@swarthmore.edu, pass is Library18) How to Think about Patriotism: https://www.nationalaffairs.com/publications/detail/how-to-think-about-patriotism The Role of History in Patriotism: https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2018/03/a-modest-plea-for-patriotic-history/555500/ In Favor of an American Canon: https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2015/07/what-every-american-should-know/397334/ Music is The Beauty of Maths by Meydän. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/im-the-villain/support
Your boys have gone and done it again. We’re plunging away this week at the anticlimactic end to the Mueller saga. Lawyers don’t come off well in this one, folks. We didn’t even get the golden showers tape! What a wash. Speaking of the washed, Michael Avenatti (lawyer) has been arrested for attempting to extort Nike. We also have some exciting 2020 campaign news; of course we are referring to the upcoming debate on circumcision. In the opposition’s corner, we have Andrew Yang, the “intactivist” entrepreneur pushing bare-bones universal basic income. In Favor: our old pal Ben Shapiro (lawyer), the impish self-loathing racist behind the conservative rag the Daily Wire. In the pop culture corner,we discuss the 45th anniversary of the Grateful Dead’s infamous Wall of Sound and Woodstock 50’s soulless setlist, featuring headliners Jay-Z, Imagine Dragons, and Chance the Rapper, among many inexplicable others. To close out, Dan tortures the listeners with readings from yet another oafish former lawyer, Seth Abramson’s Tom Clancy-esque Russiagate conspiracy theories in his book Proof of Collusion.
