Thanks for tuning into part 2 of our conversation! In this episode, we discuss "Take Back the Court." In our first conversation (EP 011) with Dr. Belkin, we spoke about the Palm Center and the Transgender Military Ban. EP 011 Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcnWND3OxEI Aaron Belkin, PhD serves as professor of political science at San Francisco State University, where he teaches a lecture course on delusion and paranoia in American politics. Prior to his arrival at State, he was an associate professor of political science at University of California, Santa Barbara and an associate professor of psychology at City University of New York. He earned his B.A. in international relations at Brown University in 1988 and his Ph.D in political science at the University of California, Berkeley in 1998. Dr. Aaron Belkin is a scholar and advocate who, since 1999, has served as founding director of the Palm Center, which the Advocate named as one of the most effective LGBT rights organizations in the United States. He designed and implemented much of the public education campaign responsible for helping end the military's “don't ask, don't tell” policy in 2011. Aaron summarized the keys to successful advocacy in the e-book, How We Won: Progressive Lessons from the Repeal of “Don't Ask, Don't Tell,” which Arianna Huffington praised as a “best practices guide for civil rights fights.” He has written and edited more than thirty scholarly articles, chapters and books. He is also the director of "Take Back the Court" which has a mission "informing the public about the danger that the Supreme Court poses to democracy, and about the viability of court expansion—adding seats to the Court—as the only strategy that re-balances the court after its 2016 theft." President Joe Biden issued an executive order on Monday, January 25 reversing former President Donald Trump's ban on #transgender soldiers in the military. Brian Joyce, Kevin West & Jim Reynolds discuss on The Morning Press.
President Joe Biden signed an executive order to repeal a Trump-era ban on most transgender Americans joining the military on Monday alongside Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. "President Biden believes that gender identity should not be a bar to military service, and that America's strength is found in its diversity," a fact sheet provided by the White House on the executive order reads. To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy
President Biden on Monday nullified former President Trump's embargo on all transgender people serving in the military, Servicemen will be able to serve in their gender identity when they complete their transition and their gender has officially been changed in the Defense Department's personnel system. The president signed an executive order that “sets the policy that all Americans who are qualified to serve in the Armed Forces of the United States should be able to serve,” according to a fact sheet released ahead of newly minted Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's meeting with the president at the White House.“What I'm doing is enabling all qualified Americans to serve their country in uniform and essentially restoring the situation … where transgender personnel, if qualified in every other way, can serve their government in the United States military,” Biden said before he signed the order. He was joined in the Oval Office by Austin, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley and Vice President Kamala Harris.“This is the right thing to do,” Austin said in a written statement after the order was signed. “It is also the smart thing to do.”The order revokes Trump's 2017 and 2018 orders banning transgender military service and directs the Pentagon and Department of Homeland Security, under which the Coast Guard falls, to ensure all policies are consistent with Biden's order. It also immediately bans involuntary separations, discharges and denials of reenlistment based on gender identity. The new order also mandates the Pentagon to review records of service members who were discharged or denied reenlistment under the ban. The policy will also ensure all medically necessary transition-related care is available to service members. The Pentagon will “immediately take appropriate policy action to ensure individuals who identify as transgender are eligible to enter and serve in their self-identified gender,” Austin said. Recruits will be able to serve in their gender identity when they meet all applicable accession standards, he added.“The United States Armed Forces are in the business of defending our fellow citizens from our enemies, foreign and domestic,” Austin said. “I believe we accomplish that mission more effectively when we represent all our fellow citizens. I also believe we should avail ourselves of the best possible talent in our population, regardless of gender identity. We would be rendering ourselves less fit to the task if we excluded from our ranks people who meet our standards and who have the skills and the devotion to serve in uniform.”Biden's order directs the Pentagon and Department of Homeland Security to update him in 60 days on their progress in implementing open service policies.“Over the next 60 days, I look forward to working with the senior civilian and military leaders of the department as we expeditiously develop the appropriate policies and procedures to implement these changes,” Austin said in his statement.Biden pledged during his presidential campaign to lift Trump's ban, referring to it as a “Day One” priority. But it was not among the batch of executive orders Biden signed hours after his inauguration last Wednesday amid a delay in Austin's confirmation. With Austin's confirmation Friday, Biden was expected to act as soon as Monday.According to Pentagon data, about 1,500 troops since 2016 have been diagnosed with gender dysphoria, the medical term for distress that occurs when someone's gender identity differs from the sex assigned at birth.About 14,700 troops on active duty and in the reserves identify as transgender.
"What are some of the most extreme forms of intolerance?" "What happens at a conversion therapy camp?" "Is that still allowed?" "How do you survive?" "How do you continue surviving?"On this episode, I interview my dear friend, talented lighting designer, and overall wonderful human being, Justice (they/them, he/him) where we discuss their experience of going to a "restorative therapy camp" (also known as a conversion therapy camp), as well as the lasting effects this can have on a Queer person. Justice--like the experience of many Queer people--was born into a heavily Christian and Texan family who believed that loving someone of the same-sex was a mental illness that could be fixed through "proper treatment." It was after their mom discovered their internet browser history and what they had been looking at that they were awakened in the middle of the night and forced to go somewhere where they had no knowledge of the horrors they would endure. This unfortunate narrative is common for many Queer people and a very real part of Queer history. It was in 1973 that homosexuality was deemed not a mental illness or sickness by the American Psychiatric Association (APA). However, Queer people and allies are still fighting to this day for this to actually be a reality. Twenty-Nine states still have no laws that ban conversion therapy; qualified transgender Americans are banned from serving in the military; and it wasn't until recently that Title VII included discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identification. In listening to this episode, I, Justice, and countless other Queer people who face discrimination hope you not only love and nurture Queer people but actively work to protect us and our rights as well.Follow Justice:Website: https://www.justinbeets.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/beets_me/National Center For Lesbian Rights Born Perfect campaign:Learn: --Born Perfect: http://www.nclrights.org/our-work/born-perfect/ --NCLR: http://www.nclrights.orgDonate: https://secure2.convio.net/ncflr/site/Donation2;jsessionid=00000000.app217b?4020.donation=form1&df_id=4020&mfc_pref=TResources for further learning:Watch Boy Erased: https://www.amazon.com/Boy-Erased-Lucas-Hedges/dp/B07JZDBMS9"When Gay Was Not Okay with the APA: A Historical Overview of Homosexuality and its Status as Mental Disorder": https://cedar.wwu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1001&context=orwwu"The Lies and Dangers of Reparative Therapy": https://www.hrc.org/resources/the-lies-and-dangers-of-reparative-therapy"Frequently Ask Questions on the Transgender Military Ban": https://notransmilitaryban.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Transgender-Military-Ban-FAQ-Updated-9.18.19.pdfJoin The Trevor Project to End Conversion Therapy: https://p2a.co/rQaDTzkShow Produced by Nick EiblerEdited by Addison McKissackTheme Song written by Matt Gregory, Colin Egan, and Mike Hubbard Produced by Colin Egan and Mike HubbardLogo Design by David Pavón
In this episode, Professor Michele Goodwin discusses her Essay, The Transgender Military Ban: Preservation of Discrimination Through Transformation, that she co-authored with Erwin Chemerinsky, Dean and Professor at UC Berkeley School of Law. Their Essay contends that the Trump Administration's ban on transgender individuals serving in the military is based on prejudice and bias, lacking any legitimate justification. The Essay identifies several problems with the Trump Administration's policy to ban transgender individuals from serving in the U.S. military, and posits that promoting equality in the military will only occur when the humanity of those who wish to serve and are qualified to serve are permitted to do so with dignity and respect. Imagine serving your country for years and wanting to re-enlist. You've been out for a while but decide you miss it and want to go back and serve, picking up where you left off. You were a good soldier and everyone thought the same. Not only are you in better shape than before, but you feel like you are better mentally and have more of your life together. Then you were told no. You can't come back. This is what happened to Jay, when he tried going back into the armed forces. What changed you may ask? And why wouldn't they let him back in? The only thing that changed was his sex. Jay had transitioned from a woman to a man in the time since he had served.

In what one can only call a Friday news dump last week, the White House issued its formal direction to the Pentagon on how the military is supposed to implement the president's prior tweets, announcing a ban on transgender service. Some of the final details, most especially, what's going to to happen to transgender Americans who are already serving, are still up to the Pentagon. But President Donald Trump's transgender ban may have cost and readiness impacts. Federal News Radio's Scott Maucione has been looking into the costs associated with kicking out service members the military has already trained. He shares the details on Federal Drive with Tom Temin.

Shane Ortega is the first transgender person to serve openly in the military. He talks about how to interpret President Trump’s tweets banning trans people from serving in the military, explains why it’s so detrimental that Trump didn’t seek guidance from the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and says that as of now, there hasn’t been any changes to official military policy concerning trans people. Shane also talks about why this is a human rights issue, not just concerning LGBTQ people. Trigger Warnings: Sexual Abuse & Rape Homophobia & Transphobia Violence towards people in the LGBT community ~Please be a responsible listener.~ In this episode we talk about aromantics and asexuals as relating to a heteronormative , allonormative society. (Allosexual basically means not asexual, so you can infer what allonormative means). Then we go into trans people's problems with authority (not in a 'punk' way, but in a trans-people-are-consistently-and-unfairly-done-significant-harm-by-the-justice-system kind of way), and wrap up with the fetishization of LGBT+ people and the porn industry's propagation of that.
