BlueSky: Feed Freedom, or X-odus Refuge? W/ CEO Jay Gruber

BlueSky was once a research initiative within Jack Dorsey's Twitter aimed at decentralizing the architecture or the platform social media writ large. Today, BlueSky is an  independent platform with remarkable momentum. Following Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter and subsequent policy shifts, BlueSky has experienced unprecedented growth, expanding from 3 million to 30 million users since February 2024.That “X-odus” of frustrated progressives to BlueSky has perhaps inadvertently shaped public perception of it as "Lib Twitter"—a characterization reinforced by its prominent progressive voices and more restrictive community moderation tools. However, this political framing obscures BlueSky's fundamental innovation: the AT Protocol, which reimagines social media as a decentralized ecosystem rather than a platform controlled by a master algorithm ruled by a CEO.Unlike conventional social networks, BlueSky's architectural philosophy challenges the centralized control model by introducing a "marketplace of algorithms" where users select or create their own content curation systems. Imagine a feed that skews left, one that skews right, or one that avoids politics altogether. This "algorithmic choice" approach could represent the biggest challenge yet to the centralized engagement machines that have dominated—and arguably degraded—our digital discourse. But can Bluesky outgrow its political bubbles and fulfill its techno-utopian promise? Or will it remain just another partisan bunker in our increasingly fragmented online world?Evan and Luke are joined by Jay Graber, CEO of Bluesky.

I'm grateful this week that Aaron Rodericks, Vice President of Trust and Safety at Bluesky, made the time to join me for a conversation about how the platform is tackling the surge in users it's seen in the U.S. since the election. This isn't the first time they've seen such growth spurts—another happened in Brazil when X was briefly banned. These rapid user increases bring unique challenges to moderating content and require some impossible tradeoffs.Aaron talks about the different approaches Bluesky takes to content moderation, the unique aspects of the platform, its decentralized nature, and the challenges of scaling operations amidst rapid user growth. Aaron shares insights on content moderation, the balance between automation and human oversight, and the evolving policies to address emerging harms. The discussion also touches on user control, verification processes, and the future compliance and product development roadmap. To learn more about Bluesky's approach, read Mike Masnik's piece Protocols, Not Platforms: A Technological Approach to Free Speech. Bluesky has really taken off since the election, and since the Decoder team took some time off for Thanksgiving break, we felt it was a great time to bring back the interview we did earlier this year with Jay Graber, the CEO of Bluesky, the upstart competitor to Meta's Threads and the platform formerly known as Twitter.  At the time, Bluesky was a pretty small platform. It had just reached 5 million users when Jay and I spoke. But since the election, Bluesky's growth has absolutely skyrocketed to more than 20 million users, and it's starting to put real competitive pressure on Threads at the feature level. As Bluesky really ramps up, it seemed like a great time to engage with some of the core questions behind its design and see if Jay and her team can keep it up. Today, I'm talking to Jay Graber, the CEO of Bluesky Social, which is a decentralized competitor to Meta's Threads, Mastodon, and X. Bluesky actually started inside of what was then known as Twitter — it was a project from then-CEO Jack Dorsey, who spent his days wandering the earth and saying things like Twitter should be a protocol and not a company. Bluesky was supposed to be that protocol, but Jack spun it out of Twitter in 2021, just before Elon Musk bought the company and renamed it X. Bluesky is now an independent company with a few dozen employees, and it finds itself in the middle of one of the most chaotic moments in the history of social media. There are a lot of companies and ideas competing for space on the post-Twitter internet, and Jay makes a convincing argument that decentralization — the idea that you should be able to take your username and following to different servers as you wish — is the future. Voices of VR Podcast – Designing for Virtual Reality
#1211: Jay Graber in 2019 on Decentralized Social Networking Philosophy before becoming Bluesky CEO

Voices of VR Podcast – Designing for Virtual Reality

I did an interview with Jay Graber back in 2019 at the Decentralized Web (DWeb) Camp a few years before she officially became the Bluesky CEO, which is currently the new hot social media platform that's a Twitter clone built on top a decentralized architecture using the Authenticated Transfer (AT) Protocol. At the time, Graber was working on a decentralized events application called Happening, but she had a lot aspirations to build out a fully-fledged decentralized social media platform. The challenge was the bootstrapping problem of getting a critical mass of users, which was a bit too much to overcome with all of the friction involved in making the onboarding and overall user experience of DWeb systems easy and intuitive. At the time, her solution was to start with a centralized onboarding process, and eventually integrate more decentralized aspects over time, which happens to be a very similar strategy to what Bluesky is currently doing. I wanted to dig up this July 19, 2019 interview with Graber from my archives of unpublished interviews because she articulates a lot of the deeper philosophical inspirations and motivations she had back in 2019 that are being carried to their logical conclusions at her current position as CEO of Bluesky. The Facebook Cambridge Analytica scandal from March 2018 was a turning point for Graber that motivated her to start to working towards decentralized social networks that have better privacy protections and stronger agency over data, but also to work on peer-to-peer models that can be more resilient to censorship and natural disasters where our supercomputer phones are often bricked without working cell service or Internet connectivity.
