This week on CounterSpin: Elon Musk reportedly told Tesla investors that he'll be amping down his role with the Department of Government Efficiency to, one guesses, bring his big brain back into their service. Like the “War on Terror,” “DOGE” is a thing that was in part spoken into normalcy by the corporate press. Media seem ready to, if not embrace, to make respectful space for whatever hot nonsense is proffered — if it fits within their political template. In this case, it's a thing — not officially a new Cabinet-level department, but acting like one — wildly powerful, yet utterly opaque and run by an unelected billionaire. DOGE sparked lawsuits about its legality from day one, but today's news is about, legal or not, what it's doing and how we can respond. The Revolving Door Project is tracking all of that; we hear from executive director Jeff Hauser. There's no reason you need to know that Selena Chandler-Scott is a 24-year-old woman from Georgia who had a miscarriage last month; pregnant people lose those pregnancies routinely. You should know that Chandler-Scott was sent to jail for her miscarriage, and though later released, she won't be the last. “Fetal personhood” may sound abstract or legalistic; but this case brings home vividly how granting legal rights to embryos and fetuses doesn't “potentially” “open the door to,” but concretely means undermining the rights of people who carry pregnancies, leaving them open to surveillance, suspicion, and prosecution. U.S. media seem uninterested in Chandler-Scott's story and its implications, but we hear from Karen Thompson, legal director at Pregnancy Justice. Plus Janine Jackson takes a quick look at press coverage of Pope Francis. The post Jeff Hauser on DOGE / Karen Thompson on “Fetal Personhood” appeared first on KPFA.
If it feels like things are spinning out of control, you are correct. If you're wondering why no one is doing anything, you're asking the wrong question. You should be asking the corporate media why they're not covering the opposition. There's a lot of it from all quarters. There's a lot of pushback and fighting, but the most important element is WE the People.Today, we'll speak with Jeff Hauser, the Executive Director of the Revolving Door Project. In addition to their mission of scrutinizing executive branch appointees to ensure they use their office to serve the broad public interest, they've branched out further. They've launched what I think is the most comprehensive tracking of everything this administration is doing that's illegal, immoral and unconscionable. It's DOGE Watch or Trump-Musk Watch.. but it's a comprehensive list of all of this administration's atrocities, and you need to know it's there and help spread the word. With Republicans Needing 7 and Democrats Needing 15 Seats to Flip the House, Will Trump End Up With the Trifecta of White House, Senate and House? | The Frightening and Less Frightening Contenders for Trump's White House and Cabinet Positions | Democrats Have Joined the Global Trend of Left and Social Democratic Parties Losing to the Far Right backgroundbriefing.org/donate twitter.com/ianmastersmedia facebook.com/ianmastersmedia
“David Plouffe's advice for 2020,” Axios shared in 2019. “James Carville: 'Stupid wokeness' is a national problem for Democrats,” CNN reported in 2021. “Robert Gibbs, former White House Press Secretary under President Obama, discusses the debt ceiling deal and the latest job numbers,” MSNBC announced in 2023. On a regular basis, news media clue us into the latest prescriptions from so-called Democratic strategists: people who've served as advisers, cabinet members, or other high-ranking positions within Democratic presidential administrations, who've also gone on to make millions from corporate consultancy and PR. Whether Larry Summers, David Plouffe, or some other cable-news fixture, these figures are consistently trotted out to give a quasi-liberal, professional face to plain old pro-war, anti-Left austerity politics. It's an obvious conflict of interest. If a presidential alum joins the board or C-suite of Uber or McDonald's, for example, they shouldn't be given the authority to weigh in on regulations or labor policy, especially on media platforms that claim to be somewhat left-leaning. If they work for a military contractor-funded “Strategic consultant” firm or, as is sometimes the case, directly for a weapons maker, they shouldn't be offering talking head opinions on issues of war. But, within US media and politics, there's a bipartisan, Gentlemen's Agreement not to acknowledge this, let alone condemn it. There's a taboo against noting this widespread revolving door politics between the private sector, Gulf dictatorships, black box corporate consultancy firms and high institutions of government. Instead, it's simply accepted that every White House, State Department or Senate job is an audition for a cushy board membership at Amazon, McDonalds, Raytheon, or a shady “consultancy” firm. On today's episode, we'll discuss the blurring of lines between Democratic and Republican politics and corporate PR, examining the revolving door between high status government jobs and the consultancy blob, as well as how cable and print news outlets give PR flacks a platform through which to treat horrible policies as just another product to sell. Our guest is the Revolving Door Project's Jeff Hauser, founder and Executive Director of the Revolving Door Project.

Critics raise concerns about ties to crypto industry The U.S. Senate on Tuesday (March 12) confirmed the nomination of former Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney as the U.S. representative to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, based in Paris. The vote was 63-31. Maloney, whose U.S. House district included the Highlands, will receive the rank of ambassador. President Joe Biden nominated the Philipstown resident for the position last summer. Maloney, a Democrat, served five terms in the House before being defeated in the November 2022 election by Mike Lawler. Both New York senators, Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, voted for his appointment. The OECD, founded in 1961, "works to build better policies for better lives" by creating "evidence-based international standards and finding solutions to a range of social, economic and environmental challenges" such as job creation, improving education and fighting tax evasion. The group came out of the Organisation for European Economic Co-operation, which was created to administer U.S. and Canadian aid for the reconstruction of Europe after World War II. "Authoritarian regimes are trying to tell a story that their single-party systems, command economies and repressive security apparatuses deliver the best outcomes for their people," Maloney said in a statement on Nov. 16 to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. "The OECD provides the objective research to expose that fiction and demonstrate the strength and benefits of a free society." He added: "Modern small-town America needs a strong global economy, open/reliable markets, good infrastructure, affordable food and energy prices and an educated workforce. If confirmed by the committee, the needs of American families will always be my primary concern at the OECD." A group called the Revolving Door Project in January raised concerns about the nomination, saying Maloney has a conflict of interest because he serves on a 10-person advisory committee for the cryptocurrency trading platform Coinbase and the OECD plays a role in developing global crypto regulation. Coinbase hired Maloney on the same day in May 2023 that Biden submitted the nomination. "Unlike most cases of conflicts of interest, where a nominee had performed work in the past that could play a role in how they approach their government position, this is a case of a private firm hiring an individual after their imminent nomination was known," said Jeff Hauser, the executive director of the project, in a statement. "This not only allowed Maloney's Coinbase work to escape notice on his financial disclosure - which he had already submitted - but it allowed a cryptocurrency firm with a demonstrated interest in OECD policymaking to hire the presumptive future U.S ambassador." In a December letter to the CEO of Coinbase, Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts criticized the firm for hiring Maloney, former Defense Secretary Mark Esper, former Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania and former Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio for its advisory board. "This abuse of the revolving door is appalling, revealing that the crypto industry is spending millions to give itself a veneer of legitimacy while fighting tooth and nail to stonewall common-sense rules designed to restrict the use of crypto for terror financing - rules that could cut into crypto company profits," she wrote. "It also reveals significant gaps in the nation's ethics laws." According to Politico, Maloney wrote Warren in February to pledge that, if confirmed, he would "immediately resign from all private-sector advisory work and recuse himself from OECD decision-making processes on crypto and digital assets policy." Maloney also said he would not accept employment, board service or compensation from any crypto company or organization for four years after he left the OECD. Warren voted for his appointment.

Over the last thirty years, Republicans, when in control the House of Representatives, have repeatedly used the debt ceiling to force Democratic presidents to make draconian budget cuts. This drama took place under both Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. We are now witnessing a replay under Joe Biden. Under pressure from divergent political forces, Biden is being forced to make a choice between negotiating with the Republicans or figuring out a way to squash the debt ceiling threat. In a recent statement, Jeff Hauser, founder of The Revolving Door Project, makes the case for a direct fight: “GOP leaders have sent a wildly exploitative ransom note to the public. The administration should not accept its terms. Biden, Yellen, and Garland have many executive branch pathways to avoid doing so, including by refusing to defend the debt ceiling against the recent lawsuit from government employees arguing that it is unconstitutional for the federal government to not pay its debts. The Biden Administration must not cave in to extremists and overwrite the best of the administration's legacy merely in order to sustain the legal incoherence that is elites' understanding of the debt ceiling.” I spoke to Jeff about the dangers of the debt ceiling as a threat to the constitutional order and how Biden can fight it.Subscribe to The Nation to support all of our podcasts: thenation.com/podcastsubscribe. Zeints' background in business is fueling a revolving door debate.
We can begin the list of reasons today is Terrible Tuesday with the numbers 7 and 11. Seven more people killed yesterday in two related shooting incidents in Half Moon Bay, California. The madness will never end. This is the new normal in the USA. And the death toll from Saturday's massacre in Monterey Park has grown by one, so the number of dead victims is now 11. (Can we leave now?)Uh oh. Breaking news today... The Justice Dept has taken possession of a “small number” of documents with classified markings that former Vice President Mike Pence found in his Indiana residence. PENCE HAD CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTS AT HIS HOME TOO! WTF is wrong with these people??It's a bad day for four Oath Keepers who were found guilty yesterday of seditious conspiracy for their roles in the 1-6 attack on the Capitol. And it's truly terrible for the former head of FBI counterintelligence Charles McGonigal, who's been charged and indicted in federal court on charges that include money laundering and violating US sanctions. There's more, including the fact that there's a new WH Chief of Staff incoming. Ron Klain is leaving. Biden chose Jeffrey Zients, who's getting reamed by critics not happy about the decidedly conservative choice, including Jeff Hauser at The Revolving Door Project, who'll join us today to explain what's so bad about Zients.

Sam and Emma host Jeff Hauser, the head of the Revolving Door Project at the Center for Economic and Policy Research. Then, Sam and Emma are joined by Jordan Flowers, co-founder of the Amazon Labor Union and The Congress of Essential Workers. First, Sam and Emma dive into the Ohio primaries, as JD Vance comes out on top to fight Tim Ryan, Nina Turner comes up short once again, and Biden's dance around abortion while McConnell straight-up refuses to address anything but the leak. Jeff, Sam, and Emma begin with Hauser's thoughts on the implications of the SCOTUS leak, particularly with his history working at the DOJ, diving into the need for progressive and center-left organizers to keep this central to political discourse. Next, they dive into his work as head of the Revolving Door Project, looking at the cyclical path followed by the Democratic consultant class, between working to develop policy for the party and working to get around that policy for corporations, and diving into the examples they've been tracking in the Biden administration, and whether that has anything to do with the Democrats' refusal to actually stick up to corporate crime, despite the incredible popularity such action would have. They then dive further into active Democratic inaction, particularly in the realms of supply chain economics and reproductive rights, looking at other, incredibly popular moves that Democratic leadership could (and likely won't) make, including putting on corporate pressure in the fight for consumers against price gouging, and pushing back against an antagonistic Supreme Court and forcing big decisions, even if they lose. Jordan Flowers then joins, diving into the creation and cultivation of the Amazon Labor Union and Congress of Essential Workers, before looking at the mixed bag that was the recent round of ALU elections for the LDJ-5 storage center, discussing the roles of part-time employment and storage duties played in giving Amazon easier ability to display union-busting propaganda. They also look at the incredible success of the unions, discussing today's visit of his co-founders to the White House, and what the fight looks like going forwards. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive into the two democratic reactions to the Roe v. Wade decision: the first being putting it on midterm voters (as Biden did) and the second being the profoundly ahistorical tactic of blaming “Trump Republicans” (as Schumer and Pelosi did) for the extremist result. Grant Stinchfield for some reason sees KBJ as the source of the leak, definitely not because of her race or gender but for other, nonexistent reasons. Ronald Raygun reflects on various developments in Democrats' ability to talk about serious issues, as he, Emma, and Sam look at Michigan State Sen. Mallory McMorrow's continued ability to stir passion in her base, and Aaron from Chicago dives into the role of the Supreme Court in general. Crowder dives into his views on the diverse tastes of rapists, and our favorite Men's Rights activist calls to explore his take on the abortion topic (it's not as bad as you'd think, but everything else he says is). We are in the final days of another shitty year. Really, we all agreed that 2020 was the worst year ever... until 2021 came along. So the idea of 2022 on the horizon is intriguing, knowing it could be a better year ahead but realizing what's stacked against us and coming back to reality. To quote David Byrne, "My God, how did I get here?" My calls to West Virginia yesterday did turn up a progressive; I'll fill you on at the top of the show. And we'll check in with Jeff Hauser of the Revolving Door Project to see how Biden did this year by way of the people he surrounded himself with.
Jeff Hauser is the founder and director of the Revolving Door Project, which is an influential organization that scrutinizes executive branch appointees to ensure they serve the public interest rather than large corporations' interests. The Revolving Door Project's newest polling and analysis memo, “Corporate Crackdown” concludes that there is broad, bipartisan support for a President who is willing to stand up to entrenched corporate power and illegal corporate conduct.
Some of those old Monday blues are sneaking back in. I had been feeling so much better since the former guy was evicted from the White House, and had been almost tumescent that Joe Biden was doing so much better than I had expected, so I was bound to feel a big letdown, but this is ridiculous. From the bombing and imminent war between Israel and the Palestinians in Gaza, to Biden's latest hires and a few other pesky problem, I'm feeling those old unhappy feelings creeping in again. Today, we'll examine the problems making me feel this way. Jeff Hauser of the Revolving Door Project is today's guest. We'll talk about the good, the bad and the ugly of the Biden administration now that we're past the 100 day mark.
This week on Ring of Fire John Nichols, National Affairs Correspondent at The Nation, joins us to discuss the possibility of expanding the House of Representatives and the history behind why we suddenly decided to cap the number at 435. and Heather Digby Parton will be here to run down the biggest stories of the week. Don’t forget to become a member of this program over at rofpodcast.com. This week you get bonus content with Jeff Hauser, of the Revolving Door Project. He’ll give us his grades on Joe Biden‘s corporate picks, some of it is actually better than you might think… I should say non-corporate picks. Episode 211: “Greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind.” The discerning quick minds among you will know that that’s a snippet of the speech by Michael Douglas’ character, the corporate raider Gordon Gekko, in the 1987 film Wall Street. Support the Working Life Network here: www.patreon.com/WorkingLifePodcast ActBlue: secure.actblue.com/donate/working-life-1 Truth is, Jeff Bezos makes Gekko look like a penny ante small-time crook. And the crooks who control government on behalf of big corporations are in the same Bezos league when it comes to the massive shift in wealth that they engineer—and that’s the theme of this week’s show. The one enduring fact of any government is the way in which the real powers—corporate and private wealth—push the levers behind the scenes. It’s the Revolving Door between government and Big Money, a door through which all sorts of manipulators and greedy people pass through from government to corporations to pro-corporate lobbying companies. And the story is mixed, as you will hear from Jeff Hauser, executive director of the Revolving Door Project, who is back on the show to update the picture of whether, and how deeply, corporate interests are dominating and controlling the Biden Administration. Support the Working Life Network here: www.patreon.com/WorkingLifePodcast ActBlue: secure.actblue.com/donate/working-life-1 During this entire pandemic, which is now approaching a full year of horror and destitution for so many, I’ve pointed out in many of the segments we’ve done on frontline workers that the virus has just exposed the sickness we’ve lived with for decades—a sickness which lets a handful of people become filthy rich at the expense of everyone else. You can see that in the poverty-level minimum wage—which means people labor like slaves to make the likes of the Waltons of Walmart billions of dollars in profits. Or the lack of paid sick leave which is a main reason so many people have gotten sick on the job and, then, died because they could not afford to stay home from work when they got sick. Paul O’Brien, Vice President for Policy and Advocacy at Oxfam America, is back for our annual discussion about global inequality, tied to Oxfam’s new report, “The Inequality Virus”. And the picture is devasting: driven by the economic pandemic-driven collapse, we are witnessing a historic level of inequality across the globe. The White House finally has dogs back in residence again. After four years without any four-legged residents, the Biden White House has two! Both Champ and Major are German Shepherds, and Major is the first shelter/rescue dog in residence! They waited until the inauguration excitement was over, and this weekend, the two first pups joined the first family at their new home for the next four (or eight) years. To celebrate, we'll explain the need for watchdog groups, even during a Democratic administration. My guest today is Jeff Hauser, executive director of The Revolving Door Project. They scrutinize executive branch appointees to ensure they use their office to serve the broad public interest, rather than to entrench corporate power or seek personal advancement. Now that Biden is in office and his nominees are in the process of being confirmed, this is a good time to talk about the people our new president is surrounding himself with.

Today, I aim to shed light on what separates us and to take on the mainstream corporate media for their attitude toward the grassroots of the party. Episode 205: Support the Working Life Network here: www.patreon.com/WorkingLifePodcast ActBlue: secure.actblue.com/donate/working-life-1 It’s the permanent government—the corporate lobbyists who have friends in both parties. It is at the heart of why we don’t have Medicare for All, why the Pentagon is rolling in dough and why banks and Wall Street rip us off. Jeff Hauser, the executive director of the Revolving Door Project, talks about what the strategy looks like to limit the influence of the corporate elites in a possible Biden Administration. The pandemic has ripped through the world, killing and sickening millions. But, if you look at the economic hits people have taken, the pandemic has exposed the complete and utter failure of the system in the U.S. to make sure people can hang on. Both Europe and the U.S. had to shut down their economies and both took hits in output—but why has the unemployment rate been so much lower in Europe in the first half of the year than the U.S.? Maria Figueroa, the Director of Labor and Policy Research at the Industrial and Labor Relations School at Cornell University, explains how “short time work” made the difference. Support the Working Life Network here: www.patreon.com/WorkingLifePodcast ActBlue: secure.actblue.com/donate/working-life-1 It’s fairly obvious that Trump has the blood of thousands of Americans on his hands for his absolute narcissistic bungling and incompetent handling of the pandemic. Tens of thousands of people, especially front-line workers like nurses, got sick at work because this administration let corporate shills, who don’t care about workers, run the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Which brings me to the Oregon Health and Science University, a massive sprawling operation which in 2019 had $3.2 billion in revenues. OHSU is taking a page from Jeff Bezos when it comes to stiffing nurses who are seeking a fair wage and leaving nurses at great risk by refusing to commit to fully providing for a safe workplace during the pandemic. We get the lowdown from Terri Niles, an ICU Nurse at OHSU and a vice president at the 2,900-member Local 52 of the Oregon Nurses Association. -- Jonathan Tasini Follow me on Twitter @jonathantasini Sign up for The Working Life Podcast at: www.workinglife.org Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.tasini.3
