In this rendition of The Way Out I'm pleased to bring you my interview with Founder of Bellwhether Executive Development Firm, author, podcaster, and person in long term Recovery Jim Frawley. Jim shares with us his journey to and through recovery to this point and his individual pathway which on the surface may appear to be unconventional in that Jim didn't follow any particular pathway per se nor does Jim consider himself a member of any recovery organization or group. Despite these surface level differences to those who do follow a defined recovery pathway like the 12-Steps or SMART Recovery, as is so common among us who identify as persons in recovery, there's far more that unites us in our shared experiences prior to Recovery and in our individual Recovery journeys. One overarching message that comes through Jim's story is summed up in his favorite quote “It is hard to be satisfied with life, if you're never satisfied with yourself.”. In other words, the journey starts with us and for Jim it was a process of becoming increasingly satisfied with himself so he could then create and sustain meaning and purpose in all facets of his life and ultimately experience the satisfaction of a sober life well lived so listen up. The Book Leads - Episode 61: Hesha Abrams & her book, Holding The Calm: The Secret To Resolving Conflict And Defusing Tension Hesha, an internationally acclaimed master attorney mediator, has a storied career in corporate and international mediation, shifting from a practicing litigator before that. Walking me through her career and book, we talk about the power and role of connection when it comes to mediation and understanding each other. She gets conflict. She gets what mediation is and what it can do. She's a glass-full kind of mediator but without any Pollyannish Toxic Positivity getting in the way. She sees the possibilities but calls it like she sees it. That balance contributes to her success. Even though Hesha's work is in mediation, resolving conflict after it's start, what this conversation with Hesha reinforced in me is the power of service, of giving back just as much as, if not more than, we take. So much of what we talk about here is avoiding getting to that point of contention in the first place by serving and being there for each other. There's a way we can help stop the constant toxicity enveloping the world. And it begins with us. Little acts of impact we can carry out, which set a ripple effect in motion. The power of Micro-Interactions also came up in my conversation with Jim Frawley in Episode 45 of The Book Leads. Episode Highlights She's a self-described laboratory of human conflict. She's seen every variety and level of conflict in her work around the world. The impact having a give-a-darn meter can have on a leader's followers. Why validation is the WD-40 of the universe Albert Einstein: “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” The MAIN QUESTION underlying my conversation with Hesha is, For all the rights given to you in this world, do you understand your responsibility to give back? About Hesha Hesha is an internationally acclaimed master attorney mediator, with a unique talent to manage big egos and strong personalities and a keen ability to create synergy amongst the most diverse personality types, driving them toward agreement. By Holding the Calm, she uses innovative approaches to deal making, specializing in crafting solutions for complex or difficult matters. During her 30+ year career, Hesha has resolved thousands of cases, both large and small, in every conceivable area, creating settlements worth billions of dollars, saving clients billions more, including a dispute over the secret recipe for Pepsi. Holding the Calm is her insightful, practical, easy to use tool kit, forged in the trenches of resolving human conflict. Its secrets will enable you to know how to approach every situation to prevent explosions, disarm conflicts, and reduce drama. Holding the Calm is Hesha's contribution to help make our world, businesses, and relationships less acrimonious and more harmonious Learn more about Hesha Hesha's Website: https://lnkd.in/etiuiJZt The Book: https://lnkd.in/ehgNTDQJ Watch the episode on YouTube Learn more about The Book Leads

Change is an inescapable aspect of our lives. It often happens faster than we are able to adapt. One of the challenges we face during change is the fear of being left behind. According to Jim Frawley, Founder of Bellwether, by tapping into our beliefs and the traits that make us each uniquely human, we can ensure we are not left behind is. The Book Leads – Episode 45: Jim Frawley & Adapting In Motion: Finding Your Place In The New Economy There are two major lessons I've learned from my conversations while hosting The Book Leads. First, preparation is everything. Getting ready before we have to be ready, not waiting until the urgency is upon us, sets us up in a better position for what's coming. And second, just how much we can learn from the children around us – and even our own inner child. This episode's conversation is no exception. During this talk with Jim, he walks us through what he conveys are the critical steps needed to adapt to unforeseen change. The two components I mentioned above come up in this conversation. First, the bulk of Jim's work is preparing his clients and their workforces for unexpected change. Second, part of that preparation is knowing what we don't know, being curious, and tapping into the wonder of children who are always exploring and always asking questions. Some highlights from this episode: One of my favorites: The importance of micro-interactions. To be active adapter, you have to have an opinion and belief system – most people don't have it. Most questions come with judgements and assumptions. How do we shed those? The reason kids are so happy is because they're asking questions, with awe and wonder, while adults are miserable because they have all the answers. Other Notable Mentions: Book: The Art of Focused Conversation: 100 Ways to Access Group Wisdom in the Workplace by R. Brian Stanfield Quote: “All human beings have three lives: public, private, and secret.” ― Gabriel García Márquez The MAIN QUESTION for you, which underlies my conversation with Jim is, What steps do you take to prepare yourself as best as possible today against changes you can't see coming in the future? For so many leaders, the charge has been to sacrifice personal well being for the sake of the overall entity. If you want to see a drastic change within your organization, you might want to start with yourself. Could effective change be accelerated if you simply begin with a focus on the ‘micro you'? We welcome Jim Frawley to the program to speak about the importance of coaching and welcoming a focus on the ‘micro you'. Jim is an Executive Coach, Organizational Consultant and the CEO of Bellwether Hub, helping corporations maximize their efficiency and elevate growth. Jim is also an author, keynote speaker and a fellow podcaster with a program by the same name Bellwether Hub.Among the many interests Jim has, he is also an avid runner and has completed an IronMan. We ask him what running has to do with leadership. We also dive into his book entitled, Adapting in Motion: Finding Your Place in the New Economy. He states that no leader can make a change or adapt to change unless they are truly ready and willing. Jim addresses the question of 'how do you adapt to change, when you don't know what changes are coming'? The only way to respond to the macro change is to focus on the micro individual and how they will respond to those potentially difficult moments. This is the fundamental work - to start on yourself before you are able to best support others. In his practice, Jim uncovers insecurities, unhealthy narratives and belief systems that clients have bought into or have accepted that may not be supporting their ultimate goals. He also encourages the spirit of curiosity and the asking of great questions. He learned that a question is a legitimate request for information, for the purpose of helping leaders come to discovery, to take ownership and to solve challenges. Hallo and goedendag to the Netherlands! The latest country to pop up on the revered Norm Nathan Vault of Silliness Map of Worldwide Listeners. I’ve noticed what is referred to as the ‘static image’ that appears on YouTube (YT) can now reflect the specific picture I choose for each broadcast. These painstakingly researched images have always showed up on Spotify, Amazon and other platforms but could not be changed on YT. Well, it seems that has changed and I’m just so darn happy about it! Jim Frawley is producing this April Fools' Day version of the DBG. This one hails from April 1st, 1995. I have titled it: Radi-Yo-yos One of the prizes up for grabs, heard about through legend and song, is the much sought-after, Peepers Keyring! And later, there’s the possibility of another prize that, I believe, is spelled with 19 letters. Our players: The one and only, Joan from Tewksbury! Chris in Somerville Kate from Scituate Jack Harte Jim Frawley producing and playing in studio And I’m on the phone Now before we start the game, we have ourselves a grand ol’ time talking about pranks. Norm gives some hilarious examples and tells some very funny stories. Jack and I add our ribald representations as well. The Teen Canteen was ROTFLOL! We talk about Bromo-Seltzer, scuba diving Marezine takers, daytime television and getting certified by a committee of idiots. Finally we get to the game! Birthdays are being calculated using new math and the metric system: Debbie Reynolds Ali MacGraw Jane Powell Gordon Jump David Eisenhower Rudolph Isley Phil Niekro And one event: What year was the Yo-Yo introduced? Now part of the way through this we flip the cassette over to side B. The pitch suddenly changed to what I call ‘demon-like slow.’ With the magic of digital adjustments, I was able to make it audible again. That is until the tape starts to garble. Can’t do much about that except edit it and make it just tolerable enough until sanity returns. Par for the course on April Fools' Day. The interpretation of what was going on was trying to come up with some other ways to give away the Peeper Keychains. Jack suggests providing the set up to a joke and a caller could give the punchline. Norm and I wonder if puns would work. We miss the set-up of a joke that I probably have here on another tape, but we hear the punchline before news time gets us. Oh and we get a WBZ Sports Saturday Promo and commercials for CartilAid and Caitlin Travel. Episode 80, Radi-Yo-yos, begins rolling up and down…now.
It’s Swell Music Quiz time here on NNVoS – this time from March 11th, 1995. Titled: It may be a ‘Quiz’ but Norm is ‘testy’ Jim Frawley was the producer. We begin with Norm and the major changes being made for our Show Stage. The panel of experts: Ed Mullen – also appearing as a category? Tony ‘Bennett’ Nesbitt Jack ‘It’s Good to Be Here’ Harte And Darrell Gould! The usual Categories: Rock n Roll Musical Comedy Jazz and Big Band And with Darrell, Doo-Wop and “Old timey Rock n Roll” The Rules are deciphered by Ed Mullen. As always a Cheap Certificate of Award is the prize. NOW the game begins… Callers! Hold your applause until I’ve introduced the entire head table. Larry in PA Gail from Milton John in Boston Barry in Woburn Scott from Norfolk Tom in Marshfield Bill from Everett Alan in Newburyport Marsha from Arlington Mark in Randolph Brandon from Franklin Frank in PA Matt in Foxborough John in Boston Bob from Brockton Karen in Cambridge Fred in Medford Stacy in Tewksbury Very brief commercial break as we hear Jack Harte talk about ‘Nation’s Air’ Elmer in Framingham who didn’t call for the game Bob from Holbrook And Helene comes to Norm’s rescue INTERMISSION Ok, that gave me time to switch the cassette to Side B and we pick up with: Linda Chase who was supposed to be joining us but got held up at her show because she’s just so darn popular. Joanne in Rochester, NY Betty in Randolph Larry from Peabody Denise in Brookline May Kramer from the WGBH Blues program Deedee in W. Va Tom from JP Steven in Dedham Ken from Akron, NY Mark in Troy, MI Tom from Wellesley Betty in Fishkill, NY Ruth in Boston Rocco from Weymouth Mark in Warwick, RI Frank from Revere And Tom in Melrose Other moments sprinkled throughout: The subject of WBCN comes up, which used to be known as Boston’s Concert Network, and Norm has an opinion. We get the Chicken/Pea soup joke! We learn what song played the first time Norm got a hot meal at the Senior Citizen’s Center. Not helping his mood, Norm complains that he’s done all this work on his new typewriter and there’s been very few questions asked of him. Ed provides a possible solution. A new category maybe added for future shows. And as always, we clean up the outstanding questions. Ep 77 (That’s the Strip!) - It may be a ‘Quiz’ but Norm is ‘testy’ gets a rollin’ in a-1-a and a-2-a and a-3-a.
