Can you get excited about conflict? There's an old movie from 1950 that caught my attention. It predates me, but still enchanted me. The play-turned-movie is Harvey. The main character, Elmer P. Dowd, finds people in an uproar talking about what he believes in. Elmer's response, “Oh an element of conflict in any discussion is a very good thing. It shows everybody is taking part and nobody is left out. I like that.” Hesha Abrams is an attorney-turned-mediator, something she's done for the past three decades. Her wisdom is epic and has lessons we can all learn from. Conflict resolution has shortcuts. Mediation is about talking to work out deals. The idea of “win-win” doesn't work because there's all too often someone's ego involved. There's either fear or a desire to dominate. That never makes for an equitable win-win. Logic, reason, and rationale do not solve problems. Key points from this episode with Hesha Abrams: Problems are solved at an emotional level. Even economic decisions are managed emotionally People might not be playing to win, but they ARE playing not to lose. (Note: think about that for your own life) Some people want to be right; most people do not want to be wrong. (The embarrassment might imply being outcast and ultimately alone.) Look for/listen for the power dynamic in any interaction Language matters - Request permission Ask if the other person would “like” what you're offering “May I share a story with you? Would you like it if I shared….” Look for where it becomes okay to make a deal Interrupt strategically: “Do you know what I like/respect/admire about you?” Name the emotion Validate Turn on the give-a-darn meter Empower by taking responsibility. Apologize. Request a “do-over.” This gives the other person the power to say yes and allows you to model a culture that you value. The Book Leads - Episode 61: Hesha Abrams & her book, Holding The Calm: The Secret To Resolving Conflict And Defusing Tension Hesha, an internationally acclaimed master attorney mediator, has a storied career in corporate and international mediation, shifting from a practicing litigator before that. Walking me through her career and book, we talk about the power and role of connection when it comes to mediation and understanding each other. She gets conflict. She gets what mediation is and what it can do. She's a glass-full kind of mediator but without any Pollyannish Toxic Positivity getting in the way. She sees the possibilities but calls it like she sees it. That balance contributes to her success. Even though Hesha's work is in mediation, resolving conflict after it's start, what this conversation with Hesha reinforced in me is the power of service, of giving back just as much as, if not more than, we take. So much of what we talk about here is avoiding getting to that point of contention in the first place by serving and being there for each other. There's a way we can help stop the constant toxicity enveloping the world. And it begins with us. Little acts of impact we can carry out, which set a ripple effect in motion. The power of Micro-Interactions also came up in my conversation with Jim Frawley in Episode 45 of The Book Leads. Episode Highlights She's a self-described laboratory of human conflict. She's seen every variety and level of conflict in her work around the world. The impact having a give-a-darn meter can have on a leader's followers. Why validation is the WD-40 of the universe Albert Einstein: “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” The MAIN QUESTION underlying my conversation with Hesha is, For all the rights given to you in this world, do you understand your responsibility to give back? How can we BOTH resolve conflict AND defuse tension? That's the million dollar question we're addressing on this episode. And since I don't have the million dollar answer, I'm joined by Hesha Abrams, internationally acclaimed master attorney mediator, who has the unique talent of being able to manage big egos and strong personalities, and a keen ability to create synergy amongst the most diverse personality types, driving them toward agreement. Holy shit, now THAT's a superpower. Hesha has resolved thousands of cases, both large (we're talking billions in settlements) and small, in every conceivable area, during her career, including mediating the fight over the secret recipe for Pepsi. She developed Holding the Calm, an insightful, practical, and easy to use tool kit, forged in the trenches of resolving human conflict, that identifies the secrets to know how to approach situations to prevent explosions, disarm conflicts, settle cases, and reduce drama. And she's going to share some of those secrets. Here's what I know… when a pink spotted elephant walks in the room, you need to notice it. If it starts breathing down your neck, you need to do something about it. Because if you don't, it's going to sit on you and it's MUCH harder to resolve conflict when you can't breathe. Not letting pink spotted elephants knock the wind out of you? Well that's just woman's work. Conflict is inevitable. We are unique individuals with different personalities, perspectives, and plans about what happens to us and around us. Resolution of our differences can be tense, uncomfortable, and downright maddening. We see conflict in the professional world with contentious legal cases, mediation proceedings, and workplace disputes. We also see conflict in our personal interactions. Unchecked, conflict can escalate and become volatile with dangerous outcomes. If adults are having a hard time managing conflict, imagine how hard it can be for kids. We can start early to give them tools for resolving conflict in a productive, non-combative way. I am joined today by master mediator and attorney, Hesha Abrams. She has helped parties around the world navigate their opposing interests to arrive at workable deals and agreements that serve their needs. I asked her to apply her wisdom to the power struggles many parents experience with their children. I enjoyed her stories and ready-to-use strategies for holding the calm with and I believe you will, too. As a nationally acclaimed attorney mediator, Hesha Abrams has earned her stripes as a Professional peace maker by mediating everything from business cases to car accidents to civil rights to whose roommate peed on the rug. On this episode of The Workplace Communication Podcast, Hesha (tag: Hesha Abrams Mediation) Hesha joins us to share her top tips to help you handle tension before it escalates into conflict. Leadership tips you won't want to miss:
I find the concept of "power" fascinating because, like my guest Hesha, I think power dynamics are at the root of most, if not all, of the conflict in the world. As Hesha stated with her own value, it does not feel good to be powerless. When we feel like we aren't in control or are helpless; we lash out, we get depressed, we shut down--all things that significantly reduce the quality of our lives. That is why she dedicated so much of her life to understanding power dynamics and identifying strategies and tools to help them work in your favor. Her goal is for people to take their power back and get what they want out of life. Hesha wrote a book "Holding The Calm" (https://www.holdingthecalm.com/) which is a guide to all of the things she has learned through her life to manage power and conflict. What maybe was most interesting and impressive about all of her work is how she gained this knowledge herself. She has spent most of her career as an attorney and mediator brokering huge settlements with companies like Amazon, Apple, Chevron, and Google--so that certainly went a long way to understanding power dynamics and conflict. But beyond that she also has spent significant time just studying life. She grew up in what she would call a dysfunctional, unhealthy family and spent her earlier years trying to figure out a better way to live. She also spent time working at hospice centers learning from people that were getting ready to die. What a way to learn about how to live, by studying people who are at the end of the game reflecting on their experiences. You know I can't help but get philosophical as well, so we also spent some time talking about the inevitably of power dynamics. Is the reality that there will always be "carnivores" out there who take power and control the world, or is there a chance for humans to evolve and find a way to share power? And if so, what are the trade-offs if we do evolve in that way; would it result in a loss of drive or innovation? Would humanity definitely be better off? A big thanks to Hesha for being on and sharing her experiences.

In my years of working with managers, one of most frequent questions I get is this: How do I deal with conflict in my team? This dilemma can be approached from two perspectives. First, there are practices a team can adopt to help limit the number of conflicts that arise. Second, there are approaches a team can use to dissolve conflict quickly and effectively. Used together, these techniques can help any team become more cohesive and productive. Today’s guest is Hesha Abrams. With over 30 years of experience solving conflict and difficult problems, Hesha comes to the table as a world-renowned meditator, negotiator, and author. As an expert in conflict and pragmatic solutions, Hesha implements innovative approaches and thought-provoking solutions that obtain favorable outcomes for even the most complex conflicts, including mediating the case over the secret recipe for Pepsi. Hesha's popular new book, Holding The Calm shares her secrets on how to read a situation to solve problems, eliminate conflict, and restore harmony. Hesha and I talk about what we do wrong that makes it harder to resolve conflicts and she shares some of her practical approaches to addressing conflict more effectively. We also get into how to help your team members resolve conflicts so you can foster stronger teamwork. Read the related blog article: How to Hold the Calm when Dealing with Conflict KEEP UP WITH HESHA Website: holdingthecalm.com Key Takeaways: Conflict is like spilled spaghetti sauce; the sooner you deal with it, the easier it is. When we don’t understand others, we label them negatively. Confirmation bias then looks for evidence for these negative beliefs of others which further cements our belief. Try to find redeeming qualities of others or consider how they operate (introvert/extrovert, a kinesthetic/visual/auditory learner) to give yourself a more expansive view of their humanity. Think like a doctor when someone emotionally erupts on you.
Holding the calm, says Hesha Abrams, is an essential skill for resolving conflict and diffusing tension. Conflict and tension trigger an individual's amygdala, the "reptilian" part of the brain that initiates the flight-flight-or-freeze response. And when the amygdala is activated, the human body goes into a refractory state for about 20 minutes. Our eyes and ears only take in limited data. Attempting to reason with a person in a refractory state is a waste of time and energy because it's like "pouring water on dry ground," says Abrams, an internationally recognized mediator and author of Holding the Calm: The Secret to Resolving Conflict and Defusing Tension. Telling a person who's emotionally upset to "calm down" won't usually help. When the amygdala is active, a person will either fight or flee in response to those words. (Think about it: Has telling your upset son to "calm down" ever really helped? More likely than not, he's gotten even angrier and stormed away.) How to Hold the Calm When you are upset or emotionally triggered, Abram suggest repeating this mantra to yourself: I am holding the calm. I am holding the calm. I am holding the calm. Repeating that phrase reminds you that you have power and choices -- and that gives you a "moat" around your feelings and allows you to take your time and choose what you want to do. Doing this in front of your kids also shows them how to take care of themselves. You're modeling emotional regulation, and your kids will learn from your example. Handling Big Emotions with Teens Vuc 'em! VUCS is an acronym that means Validate, Understand, Clarify, Summarize. Validating can include simply naming the emotion you see and hear your child expressing. Your child (vigorously) disagree with your assessment, but if you calmly name the emotion ("You seem angry."), your child may also calm a bit because they feel seen and heard. "Naming the emotion drains 50 percent of the poison out," says Abrams, who's successfully used this technique in many negotiations. Then, you can ask some question to help understand and clarify what's going on. Summarize the situation next. The whole process often takes less time than you'd expect -- and is significantly more efficient than most alternatives. (Think about a fight with your teen, Abrams says. How long does that typically take?) A day or so later, during a moment of calm, you can say something like, "Let's talk about how we can help each other understand each other better, because I love you, respect you, value you and want to be able to do this better for you," Abrams says. Then, you can teach your son some simple techniques he can use to manage his big emotions. In this episode, Janet, & Hesha discuss: What spaghetti sauce can teach us about conflict How your brain and body respond to conflict How to stay calm in the midst of conflict and tension Helping teens handle big emotions How modeling & teaching your son to "hold the calm" can help him learn to respect women & choose a good mate Paradigm shifts that help us reframe "disrespectful" and annoying behavior Teaching self-soothing behavior to boys What to do instead of fighting about screens Links we mentioned (or should have) in this episode: holdingthecalm.com - Abram's website Holding the Calm: The Secret to Resolving Conflict and Defusing Tension -- Abram's book Parenting in Real Life podcast Cracking the Boy Code with Dr. Adam Cox -- ON BOYS episode Need help with your boys?
