The Doll by Daphne du MaurierDame Daphne du Maurier, Lady Browning was born in 1907 in London in 1931 and died in 1989 in Cornwall. She is a famous novelist with such best-sellers as Rebecca, Frenchman's Creek, The Birds and the novella Don't Look Now. This story is taken from a collection of short stories written before her famous novels. She was clearly fond of the name Rebecca for the dark-spirited anima-like femme fatale.I did a recording of Don't Look Now, which has proved to be my most popular recording on Youtube.(If You Appreciate The Work I've Put In Here - You could buy me a coffee at https://ko-fi.com/tonywalker or join as a Patron for exclusive content here: https://www.patreon.com/barcud)Her father was an actor and theatre manager who was knighted for her services to the arts.  Her mother Muriel Beaumont was also an actress.   Daphne's sister Angela was also an author and an actress and her other sister Jeanne who was part of the painter colony in St Ives Cornwall.  Daphne and her sister Jeanne look very like their mother in the photographs on the internet.  Their cousins were the inspiration for the children in J M Barrie's Peter Pan.  Her great-great-grandmother was mistress of Frederick Augustus, Duke of York and Albany. She was born when the family were living in a rather grand house on Cumberland Terrace on the eastern side of Regent's Park in a house that is now a grade I listed building designed by the famous architect John Nash. Her father's success made this possible. She was born in a house Daphne du Maurier became more reclusive as she got more famous and spent her time n her beloved Cornwall. As she grew, the family had two houses — one in Hampstead, north London ( a grade II listed building from 1720) and a house in Fowey, Cornwall, where they lived exclusively during the Second World War.  She got married to a prominent soldier and had three children, of whom both girls married prominent soldiers. The Wiki notes that her marriage was somewhat chilly and she herself could be distant from her children. Her husband died in 1965, when she was 34.  She moved permanently to Kilmarth, Cornwall. She was made a dame (equivalent of a knight) in 1969 but was very reticent about mentioning it and never made much of it. After she died in 1989, biographers discussed whether she was a lesbian. Her sister Jeanne had a close relationship with another woman. She notes that her father always wanted a son and so she was a tomboy. Her children denied that she was a lesbian. When she died of heart failure aged 81, her body was privately cremated.  In her obituary, Kate Kellaway said: “Du Maurier was mistress of calculated irresolution. She did not want to put her readers' minds at rest. She wanted her riddles to persist. She wanted the novels to continue to haunt us beyond their endings.”The DollThis story was published in 1937, that is two years after the death of her husband, and one year before the publication of Rebecca.   Apparently she was only 21 when she wrote The Doll. And you can join my mailing list and get a  free audiobook: https://bit.ly/dalstonvampireMusic By The Heartwood Institutehttps://bit.ly/somecomeback***The Jordan Harbinger ShowApple Best of 2018-Learn the stories, secrets & skills of the world's most fascinating pplListen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the show

When mummified human remains were discovered inside of a 55-gallon drum stashed in the crawlspace of a Long Island home, Nassau County investigators had to work backwards to solve a mysterious murder case three decades in the making. The victim was a young, Latinx woman with an almost full-term pregnancy, but a search of missing persons reports filed over the years failed to find a match. Before they were able to identify the body as belonging to 27-year-old Reyna Marroquín, forensic analysts first figured out the approximate age of the barrel, and indicated a strong suspect. In 1999, dedicated detectives brought closure to a case that didn't receive the attention it deserved back in 1969, when the murder took place.True Crime Headlines: 4:53Woman in the Barrel: 9:23 Writing and research by Angelina Villeseche.Original music and audio production by Louis Levesque. For inquiries: louis14levesque@gmail.comF O L L O W  U S ! ! !I N S T A G R A M -- @murdermurdernewsT W I T T E R --  @mmurdernewsF A C E B O O K -- https://www.facebook.com/mmntruecrime/T I K T O K -- @murdermurdernewsY O U T U B E -- MurderMurder NewsJoin our Facebook Group | to chat about true crime, and to join our virtual book club!Join us on the Picnic app | to chat with us about the cases that fascinate you!Use our link to sign up for 25% off Nuna - Our fave app for mental well-being!Use code MM15 to get 15% off a single-day or weekend ticket to PNW True Crime Fest!Check out MurderMurder.news for the latest breaking true crime news! For business inquiries: murdermurdernews@gmail.com---LINKS + SOURCES:TV:Forensic Files: A Voice from BeyondPodcasts:Nefarious New York - Reyna MarroquinCriminally Listed Presents: Into the Killing - Reyna MarroquinStraight Up Evil - Reyna Marroquinhttps://www.nytimes.com/1999/09/13/nyregion/suicide-adds-to-mystery-of-corpse-found-in-barrel.htmlhttps://www.nytimes.com/2000/01/21/nyregion/metro-news-briefs-new-york-dead-woman-s-ex-boss-was-father-of-her-baby.htmlhttps://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl-xpm-1999-09-14-9909131226-story.htmlhttps://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl-xpm-2000-01-22-0001220143-story.htmlhttps://forensicfilesnow.com/index.php/tag/howard-elkins/https://truecrimemysteries.medium.com/reyna-The Jordan Harbinger ShowApple Best of 2018-Learn the stories, secrets & skills of the world's most fascinating pplListen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the show

This is the 2nd part of my interview with Lt Col. Stephen Harrison, MBE who served for two years as a full-time Touring Officer with BRIXMIS. The tours were hazardous three-man, vehicle-borne patrols collecting intelligence on the Warsaw Pact forces in East Germany for up to five days and nights over a series of four-month patrolling periods. In this episode, we hear of Stephen's imprisonment in a Soviet Army gaol, following detention in a Soviet Army garrison town as well as East German and Soviet Army press coverage about his activities. Stephen's speciality was using his language skills to engage and befriend opposition troops and thereby gaining valuable intelligence. He used to go into bars frequented by Soviet officers and recalls one particular drunken night in Potsdam..  We also hear about his visit to the infamous World War 2 prison camp of Colditz castle where he befriends the staff enabling other BRIXMIS tours to visit regularly.Stephen also shares details of the top-secret Operation Tomahawk, a particularly unpleasant mission which may not be for those of a sensitive disposition. In later years Stephen obtained his Stasi file which reveals that the surveillance on him was far closer than he'd ever believed.Don't miss part 1  of this fascinating interview here.Cold War history is disappearing; however, a simple monthly donation will keep this podcast on the air. Dragnet ran from June 3rd,1949 to February 26th,1957 on NBC at various times and days and starred Jack Webb as Detective Sergeant Joe Friday. Various partners throughout the show's run were Sergeant Ben Romero (Barton Yarborough), Ed Jacobs (Barney Phillips), and Officer Frank Smith (Ben Alexander).Webb was the creator/Director of the series and wanted everything to be as authentic as possible, down to the last sound effect. The stories were based on actual police files and "the names were changed to protect the innocent".Dragnet broke a few radio taboos as well, such as dramatizing sex crimes. Children also were killed on occasion as in the episode "Twenty-Two Rifle For Christmas". The series eventually went to television and ran there for many years. The Big Car: In four months, 15 food markets in Los Angeles have been held up and robbed. Richard Diamond, Private Detective came to NBC in 1949. Diamond was a slick, sophisticated detective, with a sharp tongue for folks who needed it. Diamond enjoyed the detective life, but not as much as entertaining his girl, Helen Asher. After each show, he would croon a number to his Park Avenue sweetheart.Mr. Powell, a former song and dance man, was perfect for the role. He added an extra dimension to the 40's hokey private eye drama.Diamond was a rough gumshoe that would often get knocked on the head with a revolver butt or other items. His counterpart on the police force was Lt. Levinson who often accepted Diamond's help reluctantly. Levinson would claim to get stomach trouble whenever Diamond would call him and would take bicarbonate to settle his aching stomach. Although they always seem at odds with each other, Diamond and Levinson were best friends. The Betty Moran Case: A double murder, a rich woman named Betty Moran, and a touch of blackmail lead the police to think it a murder/suicide. The phrase "Emotionally Slutty" is from a Sex and the City episode... Carrie Bradshaw says, "I revealed too much too soon. I was emotionally slutty."In this episode, I talk about the habit some of us are in of giving it up too early... You know, sharing intimate details of our lives with people we don't know very well. I share with you why I think it is both a blessing and a curse that I wear my heart on my sleeve. I also tell a story of how this played out on a date I went on one time. Lastly, I share some tips and ideas on dos/donts from a dating coach perspective and vulnerability in communication, in general. I believe my ability to share a lot of myself with others freely is a gift of mine. Has it also bitten me in the ass more than once? Yes! I think I'm vulnerable in conversation because I want others to be vulnerable with me. I appreciate deep, thoughtful, conversation over small talk any day. The so-called dating experts (as well as licensed professionals in therapy/psychology) tell us that these more revealing conversations should be reserved for later in a relationship as trust is built. However, most of us bond over common ground... Often, we end up talking about our marriages, divorces, or we get triggered by something that leads to conversation about our pasts. We also talk about the common ground of dating & how challenging it can be. I've found myself swapping online dating stories many times while on a date. I think this is all very normal and we shouldn't beat ourselves up when it happens.Next, I share intimate details of how I received a text message recently from a guy I had gone on one date with right after my separation in spring of 2020.  He shared with me a backhanded compliment that he thought I was growing in my divorce journey after having revealed too much too soon about my divorces on our date. As it turns out, I thought he talked an awful lot about his divorce! Perspective is everything and we're all learning here.Herein lies the difference from a good date and a friendship date where we bond over divorce and being single... When there's sexual attraction, chemistry, giddy feelings, we don't talk about this stuff! When there's a spark, the conversation has NOTHING to do with the negative stuff of our pasts or our exes.I'm a "relationship person".  I care about people I get to know in my personal life as well as my professional life. I recently learned some communication skills from a group called The Black Swan Group. The skills were originally developed for hostage negotiations but can be used in sales or in everyday life. I give some examples of using what they call, Labels & Mirrors, to learn more about the other person and to get the other person to open up . At the end of the day, I still believe vulnerability begets vulnerability. Being Emotionally Slutty isn't for everyone... Not everyone appreciates deep, thought-provoking, intimate conversations. Some people judge me and think I'm inappropriate or too vulnerable. That's ok! They're just not my people. The Jordan Harbinger ShowApple Best of 2018-Learn the stories, secrets & skills of the world's most fascinating pplListen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the show

In this episode, I have a conversation with my friend, Licensed Clinical Therapist, Emma Wood, about narcissism, triangulation, and gas lighting. I share experiences from my second marriage with Emma to gain a better understanding of these traits and behaviors as they relate to divorce and co-parenting.  Emma beautifully articulates:Why triangles form as a result of  conflict between two peopleWhy narcissists are prone to seek and thrive in triangulationHow triangulation affects children when put in the middle of two parentsWhat gas lighting isWhy people may use gas lighting as a manipulation tacticHow gas lighting makes a vulnerable or dependent person feelThe need to work on one's identityLastly, I share a  triumphant (silly!) story of confronting the person in my life who I consider to be a narcissist. It wasn't until I had separation from her and rebuilt my confidence that I had the courage to say anything to her face. Low and behold... without my ex husband relaying messages between us or a phone screen to hide behind, she was timid and silent! Oh how I wish I had communicated differently with her all of those years I was silenced! My hope is that as you make new friends and date, you will be cognizant of these personality disorders and manipulative behaviors so that you can make better choices than I did when faced by them.  I'm so grateful I know what flags to look for now and I AVOID the flags at all cost.  My daughter and I are enjoying a peaceful life and I won't risk disrupting that.  If you share life with someone similar to what we discuss in this podcast, my advice is that you seek tools, resources, and therapy to support you.  Emma's practice is Thalia Therapy and Wellness Centerlocated at the Saint Lukes Multispecialty Clinic- Mission Farms.  https://www.thaliacenter.com/The Jordan Harbinger ShowApple Best of 2018-Learn the stories, secrets & skills of the world's most fascinating pplListen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify Belonging SongsHear new, original songs evolve from demos into finished tracks within each episode. They say we are the sum of who we surround ourselves with. In this episode, I examine who I have surrounded myself with throughout my life and how they impact me and I encourage you to do the same.  It's pretty well accepted that teens' peer groups impact them even more than their families, so I begin by talking about childhood friends and experiences. I invite you to take a trip down memory lane with me to think back on your middle school/junior high and high school friends and cliques you were a part of.  How did those kids and shared experiences shape and impact you?For the most part, we cannot choose our family members, but we can choose the amount of time we spend with them and how we communicate with them.  I share an example of a friend of mine who has a very verbally and emotionally abusive sister.  My friend has made the difficult decision to limit her contact in order to protect her own feelings and to guard against the anxiety, anger, and stressful situations her sister creates.I also discuss my own work/career/industry friendships. I have been very fortunate to develop close friendships with a lot of people I've worked with throughout my career.  My industry friends have supported and encouraged each other's career development and have been there for each other personally too.  I have a big appreciation for people who want to see one another succeed and who add some humor and fun to my work life. Some of my male co-workers have shaped my belief that men and women can indeed JUST be friends.I share many examples of my diversified friendships.   I have friends I've made in different cities I've lived in and different neighborhoods within Kansas City. I have neighbor friends, mom friends, and single parent friends.  I have friends who make me laugh, challenge me, and pray for me. I think it's important to surround ourselves with people who are different than us and think differently too. Take my friend's advice! She says we should diversify our friendships like we diversify our financial portfolio.  Be friends with people who are different than you! I mean, after the past two years, how are we supposed to feel as we enter 2022?  For those of us who are single and dating during a pandemic, newly separated or maybe divorced for years, approaching this new year can seem extra challenging and overwhelming.  For me, I feel clueless and at a loss but I'm entering this year cautiously optimistic. In this episode, I begin by discussing  a Reece Witherspoon/Ina Garten Instagram Post that has actually gone viral since I recorded. It's a great example of exactly how I'm feeling as we embark on 2022. On one hand, I like the idea of setting goals and creating new hablts (a la Reece Witherspoon).  On the other hand, I find comfort in savoring guilty pleasures and overindulging just a bit longer (a la Ina Garten).  I discuss the dichotomy of these two different approaches to New Years resolutions.  I don't think there is a "right" way to feel or plan for our year ahead. You do you. Grant yourself some grace. If you're already a goal setting high achiever don't pile on too much.  If you need a kick in the pants, set some goals! Do what serves you best! I provide some ideas such as:Choosing a Word or Theme for the YearUsing word/journal prompts from Pinterest/blogs to set  Personal &/or Dating Goals OR If you'd rather not, you can just use them as a type of Mad Libs game to play with your friends :)Small daily habits to reward ourselves and to help us to stay optimistic and perservere Whatever approach you're taking in planning ahead for the new year, I hope you'll take it easy on yourself and have some fun with it. Even though life is hard and unpredictable, I think it is such a  beautiful journey when we focus on the good and laugh together along the way. Cheers to great adventure in 2022 !The Jordan Harbinger ShowApple Best of 2018-Learn the stories, secrets & skills of the world's most fascinating pplListen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the show
