“Now to Him who is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly more than all that we dare ask or think [infinitely beyond our greatest prayers, hopes, or dreams], according to His power that is at work within us,” — Ephesians 3:20 (Amplified Bible) Yet… many of us have a tendency to hold on to what is safe, good enough, and/or familiar. We have been taught that “safe” and normal (average) is better than letting go and being courageous. Dreams are for those other people, but not you. They are for special, unique people that are untouchable. UMMMM!? WHAT?!?! NONSENSE! Chris Voss, of the Black Swan Group, said, “Never be so sure of what you want that you wouldn't take something better.” Better….hmmmm!? God always has something better for you and God LOVES bold prayers from his children. God rewards Faith. Termination is often the key to future innovation. What have you given up to go forward? We are Salt and Light in this world and we need to stand up and shine our light. Please pray for what you want God to do in your life and let God do MORE. “Our God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think.” — Ephesians 3:20. _______________________________ Looking for a new student ministry resource? You can read my book “Burn Up Not Out: A Student Ministry Fire Builder's Guidebook” here: https://amzn.to/3PtBTIy Listen to more episodes from the Youth Worker On Fire Podcast here: https://bit.ly/3saDyYq _______________________________ EPISODE CREDITS Email us at: youthworkeronfire@gmail.com Hosted by: Doug Edwards Theme Song: "The One and Only" by The 808 (Listen to more at: https://bit.ly/3FTYIAJ ) Edited by: Secret Roots Music House Recorded by: Doug Edwards Graphics by: Ryan James Edwards

Everything IS a negotiation and this episode with Chris Voss will confirm this. Understanding how to turn the tide in your favor before walking away from the table is key. It's an art. And there's nobody alive who's better at it than Chris Voss. Chris was an expert hostage negotiator and began his work with the FBI's crisis unit launching a 24-year career with the bureau, eventually acting as their chief international hostage and kidnapping negotiator. After retiring from the FBI in 2007, Chris turned his considerable talents for bargaining to the world of business, reasoning that if his skill set could successfully defuse international incidents, they might also be valuable for business-minded people to craft better and more beneficial situations for themselves, and their companies. This episode is filled with many stories and valuable tools that we can all use. Chris and I talk about the value of mirroring, why it's better to be happy in a negotiation, how open ended questions are the killer ones, how the most powerful negotiators use plural pronouns, and so much more. Ali Penman and Ronald Skelton discuss the reasons why an entrepreneur might choose to buy an existing business rather than start one from scratch. They also outline a potential project plan for acquiring a small or medium-sized business. Some of the key points covered include the importance of carefully researching and evaluating a target business, building rapport with the business owner, and identifying common ground and points of interest. In order to buy a small or medium sized business, there are nine key steps that an entrepreneur should take. They cover: researching the market, identifying potential targets, sourcing deals, outreach, building rapport, negotiating, due diligence, closing, integration, evaluation, and. Each of these steps is important to ensure a successful acquisition. Ronald Skelton also asked Ali Penman about the best ways to find potential acquisition opportunities. Ali recommended a few different approaches, including using online platforms, industry networks, and advisors. Negotiating anything in life can make even the most socially robust entrepreneurs break out in cold sweats. Many of us are not born with negotiation skills but have to learn how to persuade our audience to be on our side. Learning excellent negotiation skills can take your career to the next level by negotiating a significant raise at your annual performance review. Negotiating a raise is so much easier than negotiating hostage situations like our next guest has while working with the FBI. In this episode, we talk to Chris Voss, also known as “The Master Negotiator.” Chris retired as the lead international kidnapping negotiator for the FBI, is the CEO of the Black Swan Group, and is the author of the national bestseller Never Split the Difference: Negotiating as If Your Life Depended on It, which was one of Darius's favorite books.   Drawing on his FBI experiences where the stakes are high, Chris Voss's company, The Black Swan Group, specializes in solving business communication problems using hostage negotiation solutions. Their negotiation methodology focuses on discovering the “black swans,” small pieces of information that have a huge effect on an outcome. The biggest surprise is learning the tactics behind negotiating a business deal are very similar to negotiating with a barricaded gunman for the lives of hostages.   Don't miss this thrilling episode! What Darius discusses with Chris Voss: How to be an effective negotiator for anything.   How information gathering can give you an edge in the negotiation game. What it takes to subtly convince someone to have it your way. What small things make the biggest impact in negotiations.   How to diffuse a situation by calling out the negative.   How emotions drive human behavior, not logic. The Black Swan Rule: Treat others not the way you want to be treated but the way they want to be treated. Common mistakes in negotiating. Why you are 31% smarter with a positive mindset. Why curiosity is a superpower.   How to make the gunman feel empathy for you! One of the most transformative things we can do in our lives is to mindfully program our Negotiations don't always take place in a conference room. A negotiation is simply a discussion where both parties come to an agreement, so we are negotiating all the time. Something as small as talking to family about who's bringing what to Christmas dinner is a negotiation!  And negotiations are not entirely verbal. Whether we realize it or not, we are influencing every negotiation with how we present ourselves.  Through paying more attention to our body language, our word choice, and the way we frame information, we can intentionally evoke more information from others, which can help us establish trust and build stronger relationships!  This episode of YAP Snacks will feature several pieces of negotiating advice from Chris Voss, a former FBI hostage negotiator and CEO of The Black Swan Group, where he's using his extensive career in international crisis mitigation and high-stakes negotiation situations to teach people how to better negotiate and refine their communication style.  Stay tuned to find out more about refining your communication style to get what you want in everyday negotiations!  Topics include: - Tone of voice - Mirroring - Emotional labeling - How to use the words ‘I'm sorry' - What does the word ‘fair' really mean? - Why you shouldn't match people's energy - Lying to gain influence - And other topics… Sponsored by -  Delta Air Lines - Visit delta.com/travelwell to learn more. I bought my first income property 20 years ago today. In negotiation, emotions trump facts. Chris Voss, former FBI hostage negotiator, joins us for real estate negotiation tips.  If you need a decision from someone, get it in the morning before they have decision fatigue. In a negotiation, try to get agreement. Don't try to get the other party to say “yes”. Chris likes to let the other side talk first. Let “no” out slowly. A great way to say it is, “How am I supposed to do that?” Self-deprecating humor can work in negotiation. Learn how to motivate people to finish projects in a timely fashion for you. It's 1983 and Chris Voss was hired at the FBI just before his 26th birthday. During his 24 years of service with the Bureau, Voss became a leading international kidnapping negotiator. He regularly engaged with some of the world's most dangerous criminals in extremely high-stakes scenarios. One of the moments that put Chris on the map was the time he successfully negotiated the release of hostages after a 1993 bank robbery at a Chase Manhattan bank in Brooklyn.I imagine Chris's life a little like a scene from one of my favorite TV shows, The Americans, a period drama about two KGB spies (portrayed by Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys) posing as Americans in suburban Washington, D.C., during the Reagan administration. Voss is currently the founder and head of the Black Swan Group, where he and his team are leveraging his deep knowledge and experience to train businesses and individuals to become highly effective negotiators. Here are a few things you might learn from Chris during this session:1. How to decipher your leverage and negotiate from strength [ "The enemy is not the person across the table; the adversary is the situation." ]In other words, don't make people the enemy--focus instead on the problem to be solved. Negotiation shouldn't be a zero-sum game if you're planning to be in business long-term. So how do we win without burning bridges? The best strategy according to Voss is to "come up with a better deal than both parties could have imagined. You're both faced with different aspects of the same problem. So by definition, you have to look out for the other person to get to the best deal you can get."2. How to figure out if you're the favorite or the fool...3. How to use tactical empathy...While many believe that business is war, Voss sees getting to wins as a collaboration with effort on both sides rooted in empathy. "Aim to magnify positive emotions. To try and take emotions out of negotiation is a fool's errand." So be kind. Be professional. Put yourself in your rival's shoes and figure out a way for you to both be happy. 4. How to use mirroring...And much more! Special thanks to our sponsors:This episode is brought to you by Eight Sleep. In today's show, we are putting Chris Voss in your passenger seat to discuss never splitting the difference. Everything in life is a negotiation, but standing in front of a client makes it more apparent. Wouldn't it be great if you knew what to say and how to say it and when to say it in a negotiation? Over decades of FBI hostage negotiation, Chris learned those things and more through real-world experience; which he detailed in his best-selling book, “Never Split the Difference.” A 24-year veteran of the FBI, Chris Voss is one of the preeminent practitioners and professors of negotiating skills in the world. He is the founder and principal of The Black Swan Group, a consulting firm that provides training and advises Fortune 500 companies through complex negotiations. Voss has taught for many business schools, including the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business, Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business, Harvard University, MIT's Sloan School of Management, and Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, among others. Chris joins the show today to relate these principles to the home services industry as we celebrate episode #100.

That’s why the smartest and best negotiators let the other side go first. He who speaks first loses, since you're giving the other side a lot of information right off the bat, and you’re not learning anything you can use in your favor. If you’re asked a question first, respond, but don’t answer the question right away. Pivot as much as possible back to the other person and make them divulge first. There are no bad teams, only bad leaders. Chris says that if his people are responding to him poorly, then he’s failing as a leader, and he needs to make some changes. The more work-focused a leader gets, the more the work product suffers. If a leader isn’t happy with the job somebody's doing, they’re likely treating that person as a commodity and not as a human being. Make sure you’re spending enough time nurturing and encouraging your people and finding out who they are. Empathy means understanding, not caring. Empathy has become a synonym for caring about the other side. But Chris says empathy is really about completely understanding where the other side is coming from. If you need to like, agree with, or sympathize with someone to exercise empathy, then what happens if you don’t like them? What happens if you don't agree with them? You can't exercise empathy if those are necessary requirements. But if you don't need any of those things, you can exercise empathy with any human being on the planet. Seek first to understand, then be understood. In any negotiation, this is the fastest sequence to get your way. You don’t have to agree that the other person’s perspective is true, fair, or even reasonable. All you have to do is reflect their perspective back to them, so that they feel like you understand them. Focus on fixing losses vs. accomplishing gains. The reasons why we won't do something are more important in our decision-making than the reasons we will do something. 70% of sales are made by people trying to fix losses, not accomplish gains. So in any given negotiation, the reasons why someone doesn’t want to agree will play a bigger role than the reasons why they should agree. Don’t give lip service. If you hear the other side out in a negotiation, you need to adjust what it is you have to offer after hearing their objection....

Hey everyone - the Inside Influence team and I are taking an eight week sabbatical this winter (or summer if you're in the Northern Hemisphere) to generally reset, recalibrate and refill our creative tanks. For many of us, myself included, that means traveling across the world to see family members where it's been far too long between hugs.To keep you fueled while we're gone, we've traveled back through the archives and pulled out four of our favorite Inside Influence episodes of all time. I can also hand on heart say that each of these has, in some way, radically changed how I show up, lead and influence. If you're new to the Inside Influence crew, enjoy the ride. If you're a long time listener, these are definitely conversations worth listening to twice.Stay safe and we'll see you back with a brand new season in August.Today's Guest What if I told you that as well as caffeine, chocolate, and your iPhone, you also had a yes addiction? My next guest, Chris Voss was the FBI's lead kidnapping negotiator. And what that means is he had to understand influence at a level and with stakes that you and I can barely imagine. For his 24 year tenure in the FBI, he was trained in the art of negotiation at Scotland Yard, at Harvard Law School. He's also the recipient of the Attorney General's Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement and has taught business negotiation at a number of prestigious universities around the world. He's the founder and CEO of the Black Swan Group. And he's also the author of Never Split the Difference, which is a book that I genuinely cannot recommend highly enough if negotiating, persuading, or influencing is a part of your daily life, which I can promise you, it is. In our conversation, we jumped into a number of really fascinating conversations. The first of which was how yes is actually the last thing we want to hear, which blew my mind because I had assumed that negotiation was all about getting to a yes. And apparently, not one single hostage negotiation technique is designed to get a yes. What are they designed for? You'll have to listen.LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/christophervoss/Twitter: @VossNegotiationYou'll LearnHigh stakes conversations: How to prepare your mental state when going into these conversations where literally lives are on the line? Delivering bad news: how to do it quickly and efficiently and get straight into what's next. How to kick off a negotiation and how to close it.This conversation, I think, is by far one of my favorite ones in the podcast so far. Chris has so many years of experience in international crises and high-stakes conversations. And it really showed me again that all the theories and the ideas and the models in the world count for nothing until you have been down on the ground in a high stakes situation and you've really had to put them to the test. I invite you to sit back, listen, take a fascinating peek behind the curtain of what has to have been one of the most interesting careers I've ever heard of. And as a result, take some tools, and in the words of Chris, start negotiating like your life depends on it.Subscribe to and Review the Inside Influence PodcastThank you for tuning into this week's episode. The phrase "Emotionally Slutty" is from a Sex and the City episode... Carrie Bradshaw says, "I revealed too much too soon. I was emotionally slutty."In this episode, I talk about the habit some of us are in of giving it up too early... You know, sharing intimate details of our lives with people we don't know very well. I share with you why I think it is both a blessing and a curse that I wear my heart on my sleeve. I also tell a story of how this played out on a date I went on one time. Lastly, I share some tips and ideas on dos/donts from a dating coach perspective and vulnerability in communication, in general. I believe my ability to share a lot of myself with others freely is a gift of mine. Has it also bitten me in the ass more than once? Yes! I think I'm vulnerable in conversation because I want others to be vulnerable with me. I appreciate deep, thoughtful, conversation over small talk any day. The so-called dating experts (as well as licensed professionals in therapy/psychology) tell us that these more revealing conversations should be reserved for later in a relationship as trust is built. However, most of us bond over common ground... Often, we end up talking about our marriages, divorces, or we get triggered by something that leads to conversation about our pasts. We also talk about the common ground of dating & how challenging it can be. I've found myself swapping online dating stories many times while on a date. I think this is all very normal and we shouldn't beat ourselves up when it happens.Next, I share intimate details of how I received a text message recently from a guy I had gone on one date with right after my separation in spring of 2020.  He shared with me a backhanded compliment that he thought I was growing in my divorce journey after having revealed too much too soon about my divorces on our date. As it turns out, I thought he talked an awful lot about his divorce! Perspective is everything and we're all learning here.Herein lies the difference from a good date and a friendship date where we bond over divorce and being single... When there's sexual attraction, chemistry, giddy feelings, we don't talk about this stuff! When there's a spark, the conversation has NOTHING to do with the negative stuff of our pasts or our exes.I'm a "relationship person".  I care about people I get to know in my personal life as well as my professional life. I recently learned some communication skills from a group called The Black Swan Group. The skills were originally developed for hostage negotiations but can be used in sales or in everyday life. I give some examples of using what they call, Labels & Mirrors, to learn more about the other person and to get the other person to open up . At the end of the day, I still believe vulnerability begets vulnerability. Being Emotionally Slutty isn't for everyone... Not everyone appreciates deep, thought-provoking, intimate conversations. Some people judge me and think I'm inappropriate or too vulnerable. That's ok! They're just not my people. The Jordan Harbinger ShowApple Best of 2018-Learn the stories, secrets & skills of the world's most fascinating pplListen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the show
