Curly Hair Keeps Your Scalp Cooler According to a fascinating new study, curly locks are better than straight hair at keeping your scalp cool. Researchers shone bright lights on three different manikins—one with no hair, one with loosely curled hair and another with tight curls. Solar radiation bounced off the tightly curled hair, and less heat reached the manikin's scalp than the straight haired manikin. The manikin with loose curls was right in the middle. The research is part of an effort to better understand the role of hair texture in human evolution, as humans are the only mammals with the majority of body hair atop our heads. Ira talks with Dr. Tina Lasisi, a postdoctoral researcher in the department of quantitative and computational biology at the University of Southern California, and incoming assistant professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan. Unprecedented Avian Flu Outbreak Continues Avian influenza has been circulating for decades among wild birds, but the US is now experiencing the worst outbreak in its history. That's because of a specific strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza, which has left around 60 millions birds—mostly poultry—dead. This has implications for us all, whether you're frustrated about the price of eggs, worried about your backyard chickens, or concerned about yet another threat to public health. In this live call-in, Ira talks with Ashleigh Blackford, the California Condor Coordinator at the US Fish & Wildlife Service about the initiative to vaccinate California condors—the first of its kind to vaccinate any bird. Then Ira explores what this outbreak means for other wildlife, poultry, and for us. He talks with Dr. Kristy Pabilonia, professor and director of the Veterinary Diagnostics Laboratories at Colorado State University, and Dr. Richard Webby, director of the WHO's Collaborating Center for Studies on the Ecology of Influenza in Animals and Birds and a researcher at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. Children attending Sonshine Ark Preschool and Daycare in Floresville have fun while helping grown-ups raise money in an April 14 St. Jude Trike-AThon. They didn't do it sooner. That's ok, Richard and Daisy. We've been “Right Here Waiting for You.” About Richard Marx Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, producer and best-selling author Richard Marx has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, landing a #1 song on the charts (for himself and others) in each of the past four decades. With so much conversation about coastal erosion in Louisiana sediment diversions have come to the forefront as one of the tools to preserve and build up land. But the science behind it is often murky and confusing to the public. Rachel Rhode of the Environmental Defense Fund tells us more about breaking down the science of sediment diversion into something a little more approachable. In September of 2021, Hayley Arceenaux became the youngest American to travel to space at the age of 29. While she no longer holds that specific title, the St. Francisville native and cancer survivor is also the first known Cajun in space and the first person in space with a prosthetic body part. And when she's not orbiting earth she is a physician assistant at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. Arceneaux joins us today for more capturing her amazing journey in her new book, Wild Ride: a Memoir of IV Drips and Rocket Ships. But first, after 24 years, NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson will retire at the end of the month. Megan and Wendy are Girls Gone Hallmark. Listen in as they review and rate "A Magical Christmas Village" starring Alison Sweeney and Luke Mcfarlane. This movie premiered on November 4, 2022 as part of Hallmark Channel's Countdown to Christmas. What do you think of Wendy's alternate ending? - Email the show at meganandwendy@gmail.com. Girls Gone Hallmark is a Hallmark Channel movie podcast hosted by Megan and Wendy. Each week they recap, review and rate new original movies. This week, Girls Gone Hallmark reviews "A Magical Christmas Village" starring Ali Sweeney and Luke Macfarlane. Hallmark Channel News and Notes Peacock started streaming Hallmark Channel movies on Wednesday, November 2, 2022. Pros/Cons: Pro: Front loads the movie with commercials (approximately 145 seconds), never another commercial throughout the movie. Not sure about commercials during "live streaming" but would assume the same commercials air as seen on the Hallmark Channel. Con: New movies are only on demand for a very limited amount of time. News and Notes for "A Magical Christmas Village" Melissa Salmons wrote the screenplay for "A Magical Christmas Village." She has 13 writing credits per IMDB including “Christmas at Holly Lodge,” “The Irresistible Blueberry Farm,” and “Murder She Baked” all starring Ali Sweeney. She also wrote 114 episodes of Days of Our Lives from 2012-2016 - guessing some of those also included Ali Sweeney. Ali Sweeney stars as Summer in this film. Signed a multi picture deal with Hallmark back in September. Luke Macfarlane plays Ryan. This was his 14th movie for Hallmark. As we all know, he told the LA Times earlier this year that this movie would likely be his last for the network. Was Macfarlane throwing shade in this People Magazine article? Macfarlane's “BROS” is now available to rent online via Amazon. Rolling Stone reported that it will likely be free to stream on Peacock in the next few weeks. According to IMDB, Macfarlane will next star in the comedy “Platonic” on AppleTV, also starring Rose Byrne and Seth Rogan. Marlo Thomas has 54 acting credits. She was last seen in 2018's “Oceans 8.” Of course we also know her as a fundraising force for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. Fun fact: do you know she played Rachel's mom on “Friends?” Maesa Nicholson plays daughter Chloe. She has 3 acting credits on IMDB all from Hallmark Channel and all from 2022 including “North to Home” and “Curious Caterer: Dying for Chocolate.” This was filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Marlo Thomas has dedicated her life to making a difference. She first rose to fame in 1966 with her star-making role in the hit TV show, “That Girl.” Since then, she's won Emmy Awards, Golden Globes, a Peabody, a Grammy and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Thomas earned even more honors due to her tireless philanthropic work, especially with St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. She talks about her latest book, “What Makes a Marriage Last,” co-written with her husband of 40 years, Phil Donahue. She reveals how they've lasted all these years and shares stories they collected from some of their famous friends, such as Billy and Janice Crystal, Michael J. Fox and Tracy Pollan, and Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick.

MK had the privilege to have a very rich and meaningful conversation with the absolutely wonderful Andy Mc Call. Andy wears a lot of hats: father, husband, coach, teacher, author, volunteer, advocate. No matter what role he's in, Andy is giving his all and inspiring those around him. Andy is a career teacher and coach who has three children, including daughter, Penelope, who, sadly, passed away at age two, due to severe special needs and cancer. Andy kept a blog during Penelope's life, which he turned into a book entitled, Pigtails & Steel, which is available on Amazon. His experience has led to his dedication as a volunteer at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital as well as with Dads of Steele, a charity that supports dads who have lost a child. Andy credits his family, his faith and The League of Ordinary Men, a local book club for helping him persevere the challenges he and his family has endured. “Through this, I get to share Penelope with so many people and use her story to help make the lives of other children and families a little better each time I visit Memphis,” he said. “It isn't my work, but it is hers and continues her legacy. She wasn't on this Earth very long, but her impact will last way beyond any of our lives.” -Andy on his work at St. Jude

Talk about a bad rep. Poor Judas Thaddeus has had to contend with the shame of being confused with Judas Iscariot, the traitor who sold out Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. But somewhere along the line he was rebranded as St. Jude, the patron saint of hopeless causes. He's so popular, he's even the namesake of St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital which is devoted to treating children with cancer and finding a cure. The Kaczynskis were one of about just 60 families a year to find out their child has a rare type of pediatric brain cancer called Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor (ATRT). On today's episode, Andrew Kaczynski, a journalist at CNN, is joining us to share the story of his infant daughter, Francesca, and their journey with her cancer in order to help raise awareness of this rare disease, as well as highlight the glaring disparity that exists in the amount of research funding pediatric cancers receive compared to adult cancers. If you are as moved by her story as we are, we hope you will take a moment to donate your time or money to pediatric brain cancer research. You can make a difference for rare pediatric cancers through donations or by getting involved! Latrivia Welch is the President and CEO of RiverHouse Publishing, LLC, an indie publishing house for self-published authors spending her time helping people realize their artistic dreams through literature. She currently represents over 75 authors nationally. Welch is the founder of the Russian Romance genre which includes a black heroine lead. If you find this interesting, please take a listen as Latrivia created this entire genre because she was told that there was no room for it in the writing space. Ever since I met Latrivia during our days in the Dubois scholarship program and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority at LeMoyne Owen College, she has always been a forward thinker and change maker. Quite naturally she is an advocate in the Memphis community working with the National Civil Rights Museum, ALSAC St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, the Memphis Redbirds and two award winning PR Firms, Trust Marketing and The Carter Malone Group. Tune in and hear how Latrivia's journey intersects interracial relationships, women's rights and community engagement.

Good day from sunny Orlando, Florida! I am Josh Elledge, the Chief Executive Angel of SavingsAngel. Welcome to the SavingsAngel show! As a consumer expert and money-saving advocate, I've appeared over 1500 times in the media, including on television and on the radio, and I hold a syndicated newspaper column. And I really am encouraged - and like to encourage others - when I hear of people giving back or paying it forward. No matter how you describe it, I've always advocated generosity - and we've always promoted it through SavingsAngel as well. It feels good - and I want YOU to feel good - but I want to make this happen easy for you. This week I want to give you two ways that you can be generous... First I'll have 8 ways to give back or pay if forward. Then I'll have 5 charities Retailmenot recommends for easy giving when you're shopping. And I'll wrap up this portion of the podcast with a caution about giving. After that, I want to continue our discussion about life insurance. Life insurance is a way to give to your own family - in case the unthinkable happens. So, even though it can be uncomfortable to think about, it's important. To help you even more, you can listen to my two most recent podcasts at SavingsAngel.com, where I've discussed life insurance already. It is life insurance awareness month. I'm eager to give to you in the form of knowledge, so get to saving more, earning more, and living more abundantly! - - - - - - — I want to start this portion of the podcast with a quick list from Retailmenot.com. They've put together a short list of charities that allow you to purchase merchandise while giving! I thought this was kind of cool. ASPCA When you buy merchandise from the ASPCA Store, 40 percent of the purchase price funds the work of the animal welfare group. You can also buy what's called a “symbolic gift,” with 100 percent of the purchase price benefiting an animal's life. 2. American Heart Association The American Heart Association runs ShopHeart.org, and 100 percent of proceeds after expenses go to support the American Heart Association's efforts to drive awareness and education of heart disease and stroke. 3. World Wildlife Fund Another source of presents for an animal lover is World Wildlife Fund, which allows you to symbolically “adopt” an animal as a gift. For instance, the recipient of a Panda Adoption Kit ($50) will receive a panda stuffed animal, an adoption certificate, a species information card, a photo of a panda and a gift bag. You can also adopt lots of other animals like cougars, kangaroos and wombats. 4. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital All the proceeds from the St. Jude Gift Shop benefit the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, which is famous for providing care for children suffering from cancer and other life-threatening diseases. 5. Livestrong Lance Armstrong's Livestrong lives on beyond Lance's foibles - but hey they provide invaluable support to people of all ages with cancer, and the Livestrong Store has tons to choose from, especially when it comes to apparel. Along with these charities, you can peruse RetailMeNot's charity section for even more gift ideas that give back. Go to retailmenot.com/coupons/charity. And now, my list of 8 easy ways to give back or pay it forward. (1) Help a student: Students typically need to raise money for at least one activity or event every year. Don't want what they're selling? Ask if simply giving them cash is okay. (2) Hold a second-hand sale for a cause: Save yourself a lot of work by making the sale by donation-only, rather than pricing everything. Use social media to get out the details of the sale and the cause. (3) Tip generously - even if the service is poor: We typically give less when a server doesn't do a great job, but you don't know what they are going through outside the restaurant. So maybe it is actually the best time to give more generously. (4) Buy someone's coffee or lunch: Ask the...
