The Evidence Based Pole Podcast
The Poison of Perfectionism & How it's HURTING Your Pole Progress! By Rosy Boa

Trigger Warning: Mention of Eating Disorders and mental Illness Welcome back pole dancers to this episode of Science of Slink! This week we are touching on how perfection harms people's movement, progress, and mental states. To wrap up the video I'm including recommendations for how to avoid perfectionism influences and how to rework patterns of our internal perfectionism.  Let's start by defining perfectionism, perfectionism is "excessively high personal standards of performance accompanied by tendencies for overly critical evaluations of one's behavior" (Frost, R. 14) perfectionism is different from conscientiousness which exhibits characteristics such as being responsible, organized, hard-working, goal-directed, and adhering to norms and rules.  So why is perfectionism so bad? Perfectionism has been correlated with being a source of chronic stress, it's associated with a much higher risk of a large range of negative mental health outcomes. One of the big reasons these correlations have been found is because perfectionism steals your ability to enjoy your accomplishments and the things you enjoy.  I recommend reframing perfectionism mindsets and here are some ways I recommend reframing your mindset. First, be honest about whether perfectionism is negatively affecting you. Do you enjoy activities less because of it? Are you under more stress than necessary? Working with a mental health professional can be a huge step in the right direction to help us notice where perfectionism is impacting our lives. One really important thing when looking for a place to practice, try to find spaces where failure is treated as a normal part of life--because it is! Lastly, but most importantly, work on reframing in your pole practice:  Have goals around the amount of time spent training a skill or number of attempts as opposed to "nailing it" At the end of each training session, write down one thing that felt really good (no qualifiers!) Change up your social media feed: mute (temporarily as needed) professional performers and seek out dancers at a similar level and with a similar body type as you (and even then, remember: it's a highlight reel!) Take live group classes Sources:  Frost, R. O., Marten, P., Lahart, C., & Rosenblate, R. (1990). The dimensions of perfectionism. Cognitive therapy and research, 14, 449-468. On the Saturday November 18, 2023 edition of the Richard Crouse Show, we meet Nick Broomfield, director of the new documentary “The Stones And Brian Jones,” now playing in theatres. With candid interviews and never-before-seen footage he reveals how Brian Jones, the founder of the Rolling Stones, was left behind in the shadows of history. Broomfield props the film up with first-hand accounts, particularly from former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman, whose enthusiasm for the music, and Jones's contributions to it, is infectious. The old stories are bolstered by the addition of new, fresh interviews but it is the focus on Jones as a brilliant musician and not simply another rock ‘n' roll casualty, that elevates “The Stones and Brian Jones.” The story has its sordid moments, but Bloomfield emphasizes the very heart of Jones's being, the music. We'll also get to know Chelsea McMullen, director of Swan Song, a documentary that takes us inside the National Ballet of Canada's 2022 legacy-defining new production of “Swan Lake,” choreographed for the first time by the company's artistic director Karen Kain, who famously debuted in the ballet in 1971. The film's intimate, character-driven approach chronicles creative conflicts, devastating injuries and personal sacrifices amongst its subjects who, in various ways, confront ideals of race, class and body standards as they navigate a tradition that has historically valued uniformity and compliance. Then, John Carney, the Irish musician and director of Flora and Son, a new Apple TV+. comedy about a mom, played by the fabulous Eve Hewson, who tries to connect with her rebellious son with music. The director of the Academy Award winning film “Once” tells me about his music saved his life and why he didn't include my favorite Dublin pub in the film.

Mounting something beautiful can be an act of all out war...On this very special episode we dive into the art of creation in one of the more hallowed halls of performance art in our fair country.  It's time to mount an iconic ballet coming off of the pandemic, it's time for a 'Swan Song'SWAN SONG immerses viewers inside one of the world's leading ballet companies as it mounts a legacy-defining new production of Swan Lake, directed by ballet icon Karen Kain on the eve of her retirement.  The verité-driven feature documentary closely follows Kain and a group of young dancers drawn from the National Ballet of Canada's ranks, weaving Swan Lake's dramatic creation process with intimate scenes from the subjects' personal lives as they push toward one of the most significant opening nights in their company's history. It doesn't only take a village to mount a ballet production, it's actually akin to a war of attrition as director Chelsea McMullan takes us into the thick of the battle, not only following Kain as she prepares for retirement but also in the middle of the company so that we get a sense of how much effort it takes from all involved to make something like this work.We had the pleasure of sitting down with Chelsea and co-writer/producer Sean O'Neill to talk about the challenges of the shoot, the hurdles they had to clear, the magic of dance on screen and how easily this could have turned into something very, VERY different.'Swan Song' is playing at the TIFF Bell Lightbox now and rolling out to various other theatres in the days and weeks to come.

Author and Parent Advocate for Special Needs families, Karen Kain has become a beacon of light carrying an inspiring message with a purpose. In her memoir, "A Unique Life Fully Lived: A Personal Story of Love, Hope and Courage", Karen has written a mother's loving tribute to her only daughter in her search to create a 'full life' for Lorrin. At 6 weeks old Lorrin received a bad vaccination which was later found out to be a “hot” lot. Lorrin suffered severe brain damage from the vaccine. It left her a quadriplegic with daily seizures, non-verbal, blind and only able to blink for communication. Yet Lorrin lived to fifteen ‘full and unique' years. The government never argued the cause of injury and Lorrin received an award from The National Vaccine Court in 1998. Karen shares how she was forced to set goals and made decisions to create a life without boundaries. In this episode we cover the following topics: Talent recruitment (objective vs. subjective characteristics, adherence to standards) The importance of skill development early in a performer’s career Limitations of fear based learning When coaches are the problem Capturing emotion and feeling without being overcome with emotion to the point that it detracts from execution Part vs. whole learning/periodization of dance Do generational changes require different educational approaches How do performers (and their directors) avoid complacency despite adhering to the same "script" night in and night out

Why is the film Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrophe causing such a media frenzy? Why was it banned from the Tribeca Film Festival? Could it be because what it has uncovered is so threatening to people who want to hide the truth? Today's show is 'Vaxxed Uncensored'. Guest, Karen Kain, who appears in the film, is the mother of Lorrin, a healthy baby until a vaccine caused seizures and turned her into a blind, non-verbal quadriplegic. Guest, Polly Tommey, a co-producer of the film, is the mother of Billy, a boy with autism, and founder of media outlets for autism awareness. With autism rates skyrocketing, and no other proven explanation in sight, you need to hear what these filmmakers have found. Yes, it's scary to consider that the CDC could be perpetrating a cover up, while more children are diagnosed with autism each day, but it's scarier not to know. Is Vaxxed 'anti-vaccine'? Is it about making vaccines safe? Or is it sensational hogwash? Listen and then you decide.

En terminant, Yorgos nous parle de son association, en tant que directeur, au Festival de danse de Cannes et au Festival d'Athènes, d'un rêve qu'il souhaite réaliser, et de l'état actuel de la danse.
