It's another full show of questions, ranging from assumed growth rates for investments, to Save As You Earn schemes to retirement cash buffers, and much more besides! Shownotes: https://meaningfulmoney.tv/QA20 01:21 Question 1 Hi to you both. Absolutely love the podcast and Pete's book. The information in both has made a huge difference to my understanding of what to do with my finances. My question is about expected returns when investing in equities. If often hear people use 5% growth as a estimate to use when predicting possible future values of an investment. But from what I can see (and I could be wrong!) The global stock market has averaged around 8-9% over the last 20 years. This obviously makes a huge difference to the total expected value when compared to 5%. I currently have a DB scheme pension through the fire service, so I do my 'extra' investing through a S+S ISA global index fund with 100% equities which has averaged 8.5% over the last 8 years. I am happy with a higher risk level as I have the DB pension from the Fire Service. Am I missing something with my numbers? Thanks again for all the great information. I have recommended you to many of my friends. Kind Regards James W 08:22 Question 2 Hi Pete and Roger, Thank you so much for your contribution to making the world a better place. Your passion for sharing and educating everyone is inspiring. I have a question about our Save As You Earn Scheme maturing this year. I'm lucky enough that (at the current price) I'll get a total return of > £20k at maturity in November. Not counting my chickens, but I'd like to plan the most tax efficient way of receiving these funds. The SAYE provider offers a flexible ISA to receive the shares. Could I transfer enough shares for £20k into the ISA, sell and withdraw enough cash to make space to then transfer the rest of the shares to avoid any CGT? Alternatively, could I exercise the option in March and partially transfer into an ISA across the tax year end? Are there any other mechanisms I could use to minimise tax? Thank you again for all of your hard work. Priten 15:01 Question 3 Hi Team Long time listener and YouTube viewer, heck I even watched a video when Pete wore a tie! Your podcasts have made me change my pension default funds, increase my salary sacrifice (really affects take home pay a lot less than people think!) and generally have confidence in my future. Thank you! Question: When I do finally decide to retire I'm planning a 1-2 year cash buffer for any market disasters that may happen. But when would you say to use this? The markets always move up and down a bit but should I use the cash buffer if they drop 3%, 5%, 10%? And then if I've taken 1 years worth of income from the buffer how do I rebuild the buffer? For example I'm targeting a pension drawdown of around £45K per year to keep below 40% tax. But if I've just used up the buffer then I'll be taxed 40% on taking out extra to rebuild it, so why bother as any downturn is very likely to be smaller than 40%! Wouldn't it just make sense to take out less in a downturn than get taxed 40% to rebuild a buffer? Thanks for all the podcasts! Simon Doig Halifax (but was in Cornwall!) 213:33 Question 4 Hi guys Podcast question for you please: "I've been a listener for ages, and so I have started to do the good things you suggest. I had a workplace pension (local gov DB) but now I have AVC's, a SIPP, and an S&S ISA, as well as a savings account and life insurance/ critical illness cover. Thank you. I am making contributions monthly to my pension and ISA but the gist of my question is, is it worth it if I'm only saving small amounts? This is the most I feel I can save without compromising my lifestyle, but it feels small. I'm 31 and so I'm prioritizing available cash in savings accounts for things like, new cars, boiler breakdowns and hopefully having a baby. I'm saving £80 a month into my ISA & £60 a month into my pension. Occasionally I did in extra bits when I feel I can afford it. Is this worth it, is it enough? Is it not worth bothering if I'm not saving in bigger chunks? Thanks so much - from Bianca 25:33 Question 5 Hi Pete & Roger, I have been listening to your podcast for some time and love your chat and sensible and pragmatic “advice” especially when walking my dog. I feel I'm quite knowledgeable but always pick up pearls of wisdom from you both. My wife and I have over £300k in GIAs having maximised our ISAs since around 2009. This is all in Scottish Mortgage (I'm sure you appreciate any withdrawals are 80% gains as we bought around £2). We sold all our Scottish Mortgage in ISAs near the £15 peak which was lucky and allows us to sleep at night as we are more diversified- mainly vanguard index funds. You have mentioned taking the CGT hit each year and moving money to ISAs however I'm not convinced that would make sense for us. Assuming we sold around £24k each of our Scottish Mortgage GIA each year that would give us around £20k each to move into our ISAs however we would pay around £4k each in tax (24% CGT rate). My thinking is that it will take a long time to make that up via better tax treatment in an ISA. So far my plan is to hang on until we are retired and can pay a lower rate of CGT on any gains plus there is a chance a future Government (not one I would vote for myself) may increase the £3k tax free allowance. Also if we left it all in the GIA as inheritance to our daughter (as we may not need it ourselves) would she potentially pay IHT on it and no CGT would ever be paid? We are 54 and hope to retire by 56. Many thanks. Paul 32:05 Question 6 Hello Pete & Roger Fabulous podcast and I binged Pete's new book in one sitting-the best investment I'm ever going to make! I love the concept of the cashflow ladder. I'm in my early 50's and in the University hybrid pension scheme with a great DB component and a decent projected DC pot. I can select appropriate funds for each timeline tranche within my providers system. When I come to access the DC component (limited to up to 4x UFPLS per year only-no FAD), the provider doesn't allow the draw from each pot independently so it's impossible take money only from the fund I'm targeting at that point. The fees in the current scheme are subsidised to 0% by the scheme. What kind of broad principles should someone weigh up when thinking about the flexibility advantage vs the cost of transfer to get that flexibility? Thanks, Duncan

Episode DescriptionIn this week's Veterinary Leadership Success Show podcast, Dr. Dave is joined by Dr. Saye Clement as they discuss the significance of self-awareness as a crucial trait for effective leadership. Dr. Saye also compares self-awareness to building muscle at the gym, stating that it is a skill that can be developed and improved upon. While some individuals may have a natural inclination towards self-awareness, Dr. Saye suggests that everyone can work on enhancing this trait.Furthermore, Dr. Saye shares a personal experience where she had someone in their practice who served as their moral compass. This individual helped them maintain self-awareness during times when they were not at their best. They would approach Dr. Saye, recognizing her emotional state, and check if she was okay or needed a break.Dr. Saye emphasizes that very few people are born ready to fit the mold of a leader and that leadership is a skill that is developed over time. She notes that while some individuals may be more naturally inclined towards self-awareness, it is a trait that can be cultivated by everyone. When discussing ways to build or enhance self-awareness, Dr. Saye suggests focusing specifically on self-awareness rather than being aware of everything else.Overall, the episode underscores the value of building self-awareness as a leader and highlights that it can be developed through practice and feedback from others. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing and acknowledging one's own strengths and weaknesses in order to grow and improve as a leader.Episode Outline[00:02:29] Effective leadership and execution.[00:05:10] Great leaders and developing others.[00:07:17] Building self-awareness.[00:11:09] Good leaders are humble.[00:14:22] Reasons for errors and judgment.[00:18:30] Leadership energy and aging.[00:21:14] Practicing leadership mindset.Quotes"If we cannot be humble about our mistakes, then the concern is that how can we expect anyone else to be willing to learn from errors or to realize it's psychologically a safe place for them to make an error and not try and hide it.""I think the great leaders are the ones who will develop the people who follow them far more than they develop themselves, and that they care more about the people who follow them than they do themselves.""And I think part of really good leadership is actually recognizing that about yourself and saying, Hey, I'm not at my best today."Mentioned in this episode:Today's show is brought to you by Leaders, Dr Dave Nicol's Leadership training course.

Part 2 with Vlad Saye picks up where we left off on the topic of Software Defined Radio. This time we dive deeper into various pieces of equipment and their capabilities, as well as different use cases. When it comes to decentralization, guns, and technology, we are beset with the question of not only what are the capabilities, but how they could be socially implemented, all built on the foundation of why this might be a goal worth pursuing, knowing fully well that every decision in one direction will come at the opportunity cost of others. In Part 1 of our conversation with Vlad Saye of Terminal Armament, the converstation begins with how he entered into American Gun Culture with a desire to bring something valuable to the table. A tone begins in this first part, about how the tech milieu may have one set of means to securing their privacy and freedom, but are otherwise incapable of defending it, with Gun Culture often exhibiting the inverse: the physical means, but not the technological ones. Privacy or Freedom if you chose one or the other, but thankfully we are not forced to chose between the two. One of the 20 Republican members of Congress who have been backing GOP challengers to U.S. Representative Kevin McCarthy's bid to become Speaker of the House is also one of Gwinnett's three congressional representatives. U.S. Rep. Andrew Clyde a Republican, is the only member of Georgia's congressional delegation who is backing U.S. Representative Byron Donalds, a Florida Republican, in the speaker vote. As of Wednesday afternoon, Congress had voted six times over a span of two days to elect a speaker, but none of the three candidates — including one Democrat — have received the 218 votes needed to become speaker. Republicans make up a narrow majority in the House, but McCarthy, who has been a house minority leaders for years, has been 17 votes shy of the total needed because 20 Republicans aligned with the Freedom Caucus have chosen to support other Republicans for the speaker's seat. On Wednesday, the group of Republicans refusing to back McCarthy, which also include Representatives Matt Gaetz and Lauren Boebert, pooled their support around Donalds. Congress can't conduct any other business, including swearing in its members and setting rules for the chamber, until a speaker is chosen, leaving the chamber unable to function. This is the first time in a century that a vote on selecting a speaker has gone to multiple ballots. In truth, all three of Gwinnett's congressional representatives are backing a different person in the speaker vote. As expected, Representative Lucy McBath, a Democrat, is backing her party's nominee for the seat, Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York. It's how the two Republican members of Congress who represent he northern half of Gwinnett vote that is key, however. While Clyde is backing Donalds, new Representative Rich McCormick, also Republican, is backing McCarthy. Prior to the four rounds of voting on Wednesday, when he began supporting Donalds, Clyde backed Representative Andy Biggs, of Arizona in the first round of voting on Tuesday, before moving his support to Representative Jim Jordan, of Ohio — even though Jordan himself was backing McCarthy. Although it wasn't necessarily a vacation, the Brookwood High School Bronco Marching Band recently completed a history-making holiday sojourn to Southern California. On January 2, the Bronco Marching Band performed in the iconic Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif., the first high school ensemble from Gwinnett County to take part in the parade, which has been a holiday tradition for more than 130 years. A collection of more than 330 people, including 215 performers, family and friends made the trip to California. It typically takes a bad 7 to 8 years to be selected after they apply to perform in the parade. Brookwood had originally applied to take part in the 2018 parade but the COVID pandemic prevented an earlier trip. Students had to raise about $2,800 each for the trip, which also included visits to Disneyland (where a New Year's Eve parade performance in the park was scuttled due to the weather), Universal Studios, the El Capitan Theatre (where they saw “Avatar: The Way of Water”), the Griffith Observatory and a walking tour of Hollywood movie locations. The parade itself appears both thrilling and exhausting, covering some 5.5 miles, starting at the corner of Green Street and Orange Blossom Boulevard and heading to its conclusion on Villa Street in the City of Roses. Slotted fifth in a parade of 88 participants, the Bronco Marching Band (one of only 15 high school marching bands in the parade) performed “From Now On” from “The Greatest Showman” for the first mile and then played the song in rotation with Strauss' “Also Sprach Zarathustra” and “The Hey! Song” from “Dr. Who.” The Bronco Marching Band also performed in the 42nd annual Tournament of Roses Bandfest at Pasadena City College on December 30. Two Norcross residents have been arrested and charged with murder in the death of the Norcross man who was found dead near the doorway of his home last month. Nelson Cisneros died near his home on Stanfield Court in unincorporated Norcross on December 15. At the time, police said he had been shot but they had not identified suspects or a motive for Cisneros' death. On Wednesday, however, Master Police Officer Hideshi Valle said detectives identified Norcross residents Requel Rayshawn Johnson, and Antonio Montez Payne , as suspects. They have each been charged with felony murder and aggravated assault. Gwinnett County Jail records show Johnson was arrested on December 27 and Payne was arrested on Tuesday. Valle said the Gwinnett County Police Department's Gang Unit as well as the Gwinnett Sheriff's Office Fugitive Unit assisted detectives in arresting Johnson and Payne. The suspects are being held in the county jail without bond. Police have not yet released the motive for the murder. Rebekah Blankenship, an eighth grade social studies teacher at Berkmar Middle School, was recently named a recipient of the June Bryant Teacher of Promise Award by the Georgia Council for Social Studies. The award recognizes a beginning social studies teacher who shows exceptional promise in the field of teaching social studies. Recipients of the honor must demonstrate efforts toward the improvement of student learning and engagement in social studies and implement activities that demonstrate the beginnings of service and foster the development of democratic values and citizenship in the classroom, school, and community. Additionally, the teacher seeks out and uses multiple sources to enhance social studies instruction while engaging in ongoing professional development. During her first two years of teaching, Blankenship has demonstrated the ability to develop and implement engaging lessons for students, her principal said. Encouraging special-needs students to become part of the fabric of Jones Middle School has been a priority for Jaclyn Boyce and Ashley Saye for more than a dozen years, but the special-education teachers have cranked it up a notch for the 2022-23 school year. Boyce, who teaches students with severe and profound intellectual disabilities, and Saye, who teaches students with moderate intellectual disabilities, are both firm believers in getting their charges out of the classroom and into the general student population in an effort to improve their sense of belonging at the Buford school by participating in daily activities. Starting 13 years ago with the establishment of the Buddies Club, Boyce and Saye developed a host of initiatives to get their students out and about in the halls and they're constantly seeking out new opportunities for the students to interact with their schoolmates. Buddies Club also includes monthly social events taking place both in and outside of the school walls, with visits to a nearby corn maze and movie theaters as highlights. Other inclusive efforts include having students serve on the student council and as peer leaders, which Saye said gives students a chance to develop and display leadership skills and boost confidence alongside their same-age peers. Some students — there are about 15 intellectually disabled students at Jones Middle — also visit home rooms to interact with students and teachers, help out in the school's media center, eat lunch in the cafeteria (or invite students to dine with them in their classrooms) and take part in Connections classes, which Boyce said provides great opportunities for social experiences. Perhaps the most novel recent initiative has been “JonesDash,” based on the popular DoorDash food delivery service. Several times a week, faculty members place orders for snacks and drinks and students do the rest, writing receipts, tracking down the items requested in the school's small “store,” delivering the orders to teachers and collecting payments. Carmen Smith, a Sugar Hill Elementary School advanced math teacher, has been nominated for the 2022-2023 National LifeChanger of the Year Award. Sponsored by the National Life Group Foundation, LifeChanger of the Year recognizes and rewards the best K-12 educators and school district employees across the United States who are making a difference in the lives of students by exemplifying excellence, positive influence, and leadership. Smith was nominated by her friend and neighbor, Nikki Soroko, for her humility and work in the classroom. Each school year, the LifeChanger of the Year award receives hundreds of nominations from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Eighteen individual LifeChanger of the Year awards will be given during the 2022-2023 school year, including: ♦ One grand prize winner who will receive $10,000 to be shared with their school/district. Four grand prize finalists who will receive $5,000 to be shared with their school/district. ♦ 10 LifeChanger Award winners who will receive $3,000 to be shared with their school/district. ♦ One Spirit Award winner. This award is given to the nominee whose community demonstrates the most support for their nomination. The winner will receive $5,000 to be shared with their school/district. ♦ One Capstone Award winner. This award is given to a nominee retiring at the end of the 2021-22 school year. The winner will receive $3,000 to be shared with their school or district. ♦ One Spotlight Award winner. This award is given to a nominee in a specific discipline each year. The winner will receive $5,000 to be shared with their school or district. In this episode of Career Can Do, Mary Ann Faremouth chats with Christopher Saye. Chris is Managing Director of MarcWhittaker, a CPA firm dedicated to providing highly personalized, strategic guidance and support to entrepreneurs in their business, personal and family lives. Chris shares insights for living your best life he has gleaned from his recent journey. Chris spent the last year visiting the blue zones - geographic regions that are home to some of the world's oldest people. He picked up three life lessons common in each area that contributed to the longevity of its inhabitants: God, beans, and finding your ‘why'. Religion, spirituality, and community were part of their cultural identity - it seemed less about specific beliefs and more about the religious institutions providing a regular place for gathering and building relationships. In addition, each culture had plant-based diets, of which beans were an integral part. Finally, they lived life very purposefully. In Costa Rica, there's a phrase called plan de vida, which translates to ‘plan of the day.' Everyone wakes up in the morning with an idea of their purpose for the day. Let us talk about sleep with our special guest, Saye (with her permission)
Our What Matters Blog is a platform for your voice, your story, your perspective. Just like you, Saye Clement's heart has felt unsure - but veterinary professionals are thinkers and problem solvers. Join us to hear Saye's thoughts and how she envisions the veterinary profession putting our diverse problem solving skills to work in order to make a change. Collectively, we are strong!
On today’s show, I’m joined by Dr Saye Clement. Saye graduated from Ontario Veterinary College, Guelph in 1993. During her career she has worked in emergency medicine and since 2003 has been a co-owner of Carling Animal Hospital in Ottawa, where, on top of her clinical caseload, she leads the team and manages the hospital standards of care in her hospital. Away from her practice, Saye is extremely active within the veterinary community serving on multiple advisory boards including the Lecture Advisory Board of the Uncharted Veterinary Conference, and the Owners Advisory Council for Vet Alliance. She has more recently begun lecturing on the subjects of team empowerment, culture and the art of communication. While all of these things are fine accomplishments on their own, they are not why I was so interested to have Saye as my guest. What I haven't told you is that she is a keen musician and board member of a small chamber orchestra in Ottowa called ‘The 13 Strings’. And it was as I watched her giving a talk titled “why I only hire artists” that my suspicions were aroused that Saye not only holds within her two seemingly opposed personas - the scientist and the artist - but she has found a way to blend both to become something better. In my dealings with her over the years, I’ve seen many examples of how the awareness of the practice and precision required to be an accomplished musician has been applied with equal care to the building of her career and practice - with great results to show, her practice is a stand out for many reasons. Now, just before we jump into the episode, a quick word from today’s show sponsor which today is VetX:Thrive. If you are working in practice and clients or colleagues are making you miserable then I have mixed news. The bad news is you are probably the source your problems. The good news is that you are also 100% in control of changing things and having a great career. You are missing some skills and they are NOT clinical. Enter VetX:Thrive. VetX is a non-clinical skills training course where members receive training, toolkits and mentoring support to support development of these skills. Paul, one of the community members says joining was “the best decision of my life” and went from being miserable to being energised and happy in his work. Membership is available for a small monthly fee where you can join hundreds of other vets who have changed their careers for the better. To learn more and get a 10% off your subscription visit www.vetxthrive.com and use the promocode ‘podcast’ in the checkout. Now back to the show, This show was a favourite for me, I’ve known Saye for many years. She is quiet and humble but extremely effective at getting important things done. As I have gotten to know her, it becomes clear just how much more there is to come. I hope you have as much fun listening to this episode and my conversation with the quietly extraordinary, Dr Saye Clement.

Canadian Saye Clement, DVM, started her career early and not necessarily on the right track. It took a few years and more than a few management lectures until she had her ah-ha moment and discovered that the best of the best were just like her! The best managers and the best veterinary teams are just like you too- you just have to learn where to start. Join us as Saye shares with us what she has learned from years of trial and error - that the best way to fix your team is to start by fixing yourself. Along the way we'll hear how we can all learn a lesson or two from a little squirrel in the trashcan and how even veterinarians' pets are affected by the grain free cardiomyopathy crisis. Saye is known as "The Culture Queen" but by the time you are done listening, we think you'll know her as "friend".
