We are back and with something weird and beautiful! Yeah, in our double dipping on the Yorgos-train, we find ourselves at the 2023 release of the multi-award winning POOR THINGS. This comedy/drama/fantasy film is something special. A feast for the eyes and an incredibly darkly comical tale of a woman brought back to life and given a second chance. Think FRANKENSTEIN, FRANKENHOOKER, FREAKY FRIDAY, and some other period piece that gives you a general idea that this is set some-time-when with a sprinkling of familiarity. With an award-winning performance from it's central lead, Emma Stone and backed up by Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael, and a scene stealing comedy great performance from Mark Ruffalo, this has to be seen to be experienced! Don't let us hold you up! Bella Baxter is a Disney Princess, ya'll!

Our coverage of the 2024 Oscars continues in this episode with our guest, Robbie Ryan, BSC, ISC. Robbie is a two-time Academy Award® nominee for Cinematography. In today's episode, he discusses his second collaboration with director Yorgos Lanthimos on the film "Poor Things," following their acclaimed work together on "The Favourite," which earned Robbie his first nomination for Best Cinematography. This year, "Poor Things" boasts 11 Academy Award nominations, including Best Director for Lanthimos and Best Picture. In this wide-ranging conversation, Robbie explains how he crafted the film's unique, almost dreamlike look, which was mostly captured in-camera, and on film, without post-production effects:“[Yorgos] wanted to have a kind of porthole, vignetted, wide angle [aesthetic]… And I'd kind of done a bit of photography lately where there's a lot of lenses [that] don't fit on the large format sensor, so you get this vignette. So I said, ‘well, hang on — if we use a 16 mil lens on a 35 mil negative, that might happen.' And it worked out really perfect. We had this 4mm lens for 16 mil, that when you put it on 35 mil, just had that perfect circle… You get these aberrations around the very edges of it and it has this organic quality to it, which was very sweet… None of that was post. That was all real.“—Robbie Ryan, BSC, ISC, Director of Photography, “Poor Things”Be sure to check out “Poor Things” ahead of the Academy Awards, live from the Dolby Theatre® on March 10th!For more awards season coverage, please subscribe to The Dolby Creator Talks Podcast wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Institute and check out Dolby.com. This week, we watch a film that is heaven for film geeks. Images pour off the screen like melting candy for the brain. The score is a soundtrack to a dizzying dream. The humor is at once bizarre and dark, yet accessible and upbeat. The actors utilize an amazing script to make something profound and hilarious. It is life affirming, blazingly satirical, completely absurd, and an absolute instant classic. Poor Things (2023), directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.
We have a Poor Things double-header for you today, as first Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone join me to discuss their collaboration on the film, before their composer Jerskin Fendrix. It's the first time Yorgos has used a composer in the conventional sense, and also the first time Jerskin has written for film.

Our lead-up to The Best Films of 2023 episode continues as we cover Yorgos' Lanthimos' ribald, fisheye fantasy: Poor Things. Is it the Greek filmmaker's most accessible film? We talk Emma Stone, fearless performances, and the sweetly demented world constructed for this raunchy coming-of-age fable.
Producers Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe discuss the long and winding road to production for Yorgos Lanthimos' fantastical POOR THINGS, which was just nominated for a mind-blowing 11 Oscars. The producing pair had been fans of Yorgos' Greek films, and helped him successfully navigate the transition to English language films beginning with 2015's breakout THE LOBSTER. Having worked with Emma Stone on hit THE FAVORITE, Yorgos knew she would be perfect for this unconventional story of a brought back to life in a woman's body. Emma came on to produce and star, and her name helped get the movie MADE by a studio. Yorgos' ability to make actors feel comfortable and free allowed for incredible performances in a film that looks way more expensive than it was.

Poor Things is a brilliantly imaginative, comedic and visually stunning film about Bella Baxter, a young woman who is brought back to life by mad scientist Godwin Baxter. She experiences a personal and sexual awakening as she travels the world, discovering what it means to be a confident woman free of societal constraints. Director Yorgos Lanthimos and cinematographer Robbie Ryan had previously worked together on The Favourite. They wanted to push the boundaries of how Poor Things looked in every possible way. “He's so prolific with ideas that you go, 'Okay, you want to try that? Okay, let's try that!' And, he gives me a lot of challenges that I go off and find a lens that he's trying to talk about,” says Robbie. Robbie shot Poor Things in a variety of different formats and with a range of unusual lenses. The film is a period piece, so he and Lanthimos decided to use the 1:6:6 aspect ratio, which is closer in composition to portraiture. They also chose to shoot entirely on film, using KODAK 35mm black and white, color negative and Ektachrome Reversal film stocks. For Bella's reanimation sequence, Robbie used a Vista Vision camera, which is a special widescreen format from the 1950's. The 35mm film stock is turned on its side, so that the picture is ultra-widescreen and high resolution. The film is energized with purposefully intrusive cinematography, lenses and zooms. Robbie selected a Petzval lens once used on old projectors. He also placed a 4mm lens, made for 16mm cameras, onto a 35mm camera, to create an extreme fish-eye, vignetted frame. “Yorgos wanted even wider fish eye lenses that created a vignette, with a dreamy focus bokeh on it. We wanted another era feeling to it, with a painterly quality to it, and to have a lot of character. You're jumping between so many different lens choices that would, they would definitely jar, but that's what the attempt is- to jar the audience.” On set, Lanthimos prefers to be able to use all 360 degrees of the entire space. He also didn't want any lights on the set, so it had to be completely built and lit with every direction shootable. It was more freeing for the actors and for the camera, but it did present a challenge for shooting on film, which needs a lot more light to make images. Robbie had to use many practical lights throughout the set, with sky lighting in the ceiling, especially for the outdoor scenes. Robbie is very proud of Poor Things, and he thinks it's funny and more accessible than some of Lanthimos' other work. “The universe that Yorgos has created is the one you want to enjoy and get into with this film,” he says. Today on the show – a movie in which Emma Stone attempts to punch a baby, by a playwright and screenwriter whose stories never fail to pack a punch. Yes, Tony McNamara is here, talking all things Poor Things, his latest collaboration with director Yorgos Lanthimos. Having previously worked together on the ten-time Oscar-nominated historical comedy The Favourite in 2018, this awards-tipped odyssey is a Frankensteinian creation as beguiling and impossible to pin down as its protagonist, Bella Baxter. It's part coming-of-age comedy, part sexual conquest and part travelogue through an eye-popping steampunk planet both like and unlike our own. You might also classify it as a father-daughter drama – except here, the father is a mad scientist whose home is a cornucopia of unholy experiments, his daughter, played by Emma Stone, just one of them.Stone is astounding as Bella, a reanimated dead woman, whose body, dragged from the Thames, has had life breathed into it once more. The horny journey of self-discovery that the character goes on from there, adapted from a 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray, comments on our culture's (male-driven) obsession with control, explains Tony in our conversation. It's a riveting chat with a storyteller whose other screen credits include creating the TV show The Great, loosely based on Empress Catherine the Great of Russia's rise to power in 18th century Saint Petersburg and 2021's Cruella. Listen out for insights on the changes made to Gray's novel, the scene that Yorgos and Tony sadly had to cut for time, the idea of sex as a liberating force for the film's main character and what each of the new lands Bella visits are meant to bring out of her evolving character. There's no shortage of incredible work to say and today I am bringing you a conversation with returning guest, Nadia Stacey. We are going to break down POOR THINGS and talk about creating Willem Dafoe's face which successfully told it's own story, Emma Stone's evolution as Bella and so much more. Nadia also lets me know about Yorgos' "no wigs" rule and she shares that it was a complete surprise to her that the film would also be shot in black and white and we talk about what she did with that information to adjust accordingly. I know you enjoyed the film (in theaters, I hope!) and now it's time to hear how this incredible artist created these fantastical looks. Composer Jerskin Fendrix joins us to discuss his first-ever film score — the latest from director Yorgos Lanthimos — “Poor Things.” It was an exciting experimental collaboration for both artists, as this was also the director's first time working with an original score for one of his films.“We both learned along the way how to make a film score from scratch… The first thing we agreed on is that the music had to be part of the film, exclusively. No external references, no temp scores. We never discussed any other composers or films or anything at all. So I think Yorgos really had this idea that everything sprouts ex nihilo from the genesis of the film and from nowhere else.”—Jerskin Fendrix, Composer, “Poor Things”Our guest host, music journalist Jon Burlingame, returns to the Dolby Institute Podcast to discuss Jerskin's background, creative process, and what it was like to work with Lanthimos for the composer's feature film debut.Be sure to check out “Poor Things,” now in theaters. Please subscribe to The Dolby Institute Podcast wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Institute and check out Dolby.com. Editor - Yorgos Mavropsaridis POOR THINGS editor Yorgos Mavropsaridis was already an established editor when he first started collaborating with a young director named Yorgos Lanthimos. At that point Lanthimos was only known for doing commercials, but by their third feature together, 2009's DOGTOOTH, the pair began to be recognized as a formidable storytelling team. Over a decade later, they would finally take on what Yorgos Mavropsaridis considers their first true studio film, Searchlight Pictures' POOR THINGS. POOR THINGS tells the story of a young woman, Bella Baxter, who was brought back to life by her guardian, the scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter. Initially naïve, Bella was eager to learn about the world around her, albeit under Baxter's protection. Wanting to see more, she ran off with Duncan Wedderburn, a slick and debauched lawyer, and traveled across continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella demanded equality and liberation. Yorgos Mavropsaridis Yorgos Mavropsaridis is most known for his work with POOR THINGS director, Yorgos Lanthimos, including Dogtooth (2009), The Lobster (2015) and The Favourite (2018), for which Yorgos received an Oscar nomination and an ACE Eddie award. This week, I'm thrilled to talk to English musician and nascent film score composer Jerskin Fendrix about his score to the wacky, surreal, oddly poignant new film from Yorgos Lanthimos: Poor Things. Starring Emma Stone as Bella Baxter, the creation of Frankenstein-ian scientist Godwin Baxter (played by Willem Dafoe), the film delves into her ongoing quest to explore her humanity, sexuality, and the absurd social structures of a world careening into modernity. Lanthimos' films always push the boundaries between the vulgar and sublime, and this one's no different -- a Victorian-era fantasia complete with bright, presentational production design and wild costuming that fits the strangeness of Bella's world. And this strangeness bears out in Fendrix's score, his first after spending years in the London DIY pop scene. The score is punctuated by minimal voices, spare instruments, dissonant, bended notes that seem to lumber awkwardly like Bella taking her first furtive steps out into the world. Fendrix speaks with me about stepping into Yorgos' world, giving voice to a creature that evolves over the course of the score, and what it's like for such an autobiographical artist to surrender himself to a more collaborative medium like film. You can find Jerskin Fendrix's work on his official Bandcamp page. Poor Things is currently playing in theaters. You can also listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Milan Records.
