To start our 14th season of the podcast we have a panel featuring guest host Kathy King talking with Dustin Yaeger, Joy Kin, and Connor Czora in front of a live studio audience at this year's NCECA conference in Salt Lake City. Philosopher and educator John Dewey wrote, “The self is not something ready-made, but something in continuous formation through choice of action.” Today's episode explores the self-revelation that happens through art making, and how recent societal and political changes are impacting LGBTQIA+ artists. Special thanks to NCECA for co-producing this episode and to Cole Collier for running the sound for the podcast room this year.   I want to send out a special shout out to today's host Kathy King, along with Matt and Rose Katz to congratulate them on their 100th episode of For Flux Sake. That dropped this week and is available on all major podcast apps. I've had a great time making that show with them over the last four years and I'm proud that they are a part of the Brickyard Network. Artist Spotlight with Chip Freund

Kathy King is an award-winning jewelry artist, beading instructor and author of Bead Quilled Jewelry: New Beadwork Designs with Square Stitch. In 2008, Kathy developed an innovative bead weaving technique called “Bead Quilling” in which the holes of the glass beads and thread are exposed, allowing the thread color to become an integral part of the final design. Another signature component of Kathy's jewelry is the “Beaded Bead” in which she creates intricate beads by weaving hundreds of smaller glass beads together. Kathy's innovative techniques have landed her sculptural designs on the cover of Bead & Button Magazine and in articles featured in Beadwork, Niche and Giftware News magazines.Kathy's work is strongly influenced by her engineering background. Her bead quilling technique allows her to weave together sturdy structures, which she can further embellish and build on. For color inspiration and shape combinations, Kathy enjoys looking to historical architecture and cultural patterns from around the world. Bead color and texture combinations inform Kathy's artistic direction and inspire new pieces.Kathy's work can bee seen on her website www.kathykingjewelry.com and in person at the Cary Gallery of Artists, in charming downtown Cary, NC and ArtSpace in downtown Raleigh.IG: @kathykingjewelryFacebook: www.facebook.com/kathykingjewelryKathy's artist recommendation:    Betsy Youngquist, mixed media & beadwork   Nancy Josephson, mixed media & beadwork   Jan Huling, Beadist Support the show

Show Notes for Podcasting for Authors Featured: Kathy King is Center Stage Co-hosts: Cheryl McNeil Fisher and Kathy King Benefits of podcasts for authors? What are they, how can you do it? Can you podcast if you are blind or low vision? Absolutely, listen to how Kathy and Cheryl accomplish it! Why podcasts versus upload audio to websites? Steps to get started and where will you “travel” as a podcaster? How and why did Writing Works Wonders start podcasting? We were a Zoom call, then we started podcasting! Why did we do it and how do we do it as authors who are visually impaired? Kathy's podcasting technical and hosting experience began in 2005. She had several podcasts in 2005-2010 which spanned hundreds of hours and many millions of listens. BONUS: Cheryl and Kathy share multiple ideas about how authors may use podcasts to cultivate their followers and reader audience. More about Kathy King Dr. Kathy King not only has vast experience in podcasting, but also is an award winning author and editor publishing over 30 books and 200+ articles/papers. She is a retired professor of instructional technology and adult learning. As a series editor with Information Age Publishing and in her private coaching, she guides authors through the writing and publishing processes. “Kathy” is a popular keynote and conference speaker, mentor, and writing consultant. As a professor for 30+ years, she was a researcher, administrator, and educator. In 2019, Kathy began her journey with vision loss. A small, silent stroke (NAION – an optic nerve condition) left her with low vision. At this point, she was unable to read or see a computer screen. In 2021, another rare episode of NAION reduced her sight further. Although she is now legally blind, Kathy enjoys writing, virtual volunteering, podcasting, public speaking, and coaching authors.
