Meet Sarah Green, CEO of the Katie Piper Foundation, a UK-based charity that provides support and advocacy for burns survivors. With a career that started in finance, Sarah transitioned to the charity sector in 2003 as a fundraiser for a small international development charity. She later focused on event-based fundraising for the St Elizabeth and St Helena hospices before joining the Katie Piper Foundation. Sarah's passion for the health sector was inspired by the care and support her late father received, along with her family. She was determined to lead an organisation one day, so she invested in relevant qualifications, successfully completing a Master's degree in Voluntary Sector Management. In October 2018, Sarah was appointed CEO of the Katie Piper Foundation, realising her dream of leading an organisation. While this was an exciting opportunity for both Sarah and the foundation, she faced unforeseen challenges with the COVID-19 pandemic and economic disruption. These challenges have led to a cost-of-living crisis, which may negatively affect the charities' ability to raise funds. The Katie Piper Foundation, established in 2009 by burns survivor Katie Piper, is proud to be survivor-led, providing in-person and virtual rehabilitation services. They support adult survivors of burns and those living with severe trauma scarring, addressing both their physical and mental health. Katie started the foundation from her parents' house a year into her recovery from a horrific acid attack outside a North London internet café. The attack caused third-degree burns to her face and chest and blinded her in one eye. Prior to the attack, Piper had a career in modelling and TV presenting, planning a future in the media. Though her life changed forever that day, Katie remained determined to fulfil her potential and not let the attack define her. While Katie's journey to recovery has been long and difficult, requiring surgery to clear blockages caused by scar tissue, she has become an inspiration for other burns survivors, both personally and through the foundation's work. Today, the Katie Piper Foundation provides rehabilitation services, including physiotherapy and emotional support, and advocates for survivors, helping to connect them to the services and interventions they require. The foundation's work is a testament to the strength and resilience of burns survivors and the dedication of Sarah and her team. Katie remains heavily involved in the charity and, as one of nine skilled volunteers, serves as a trustee. In addition, the charity has two notable ambassadors: celebrity music guru Simon Cowell and businessman Simon McCabe. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mark-longbottom2/message

My guest this week is Katie Piper, who is a lovely woman. In itself this a massive achievement, considering her life story and the continuing challenges she has faced, since she was the victim of an acid attack in 2008. We spoke over zoom and I felt I got to know and like her immensely - and I hope you will feel the same. Katie talked about her love of being busy, her work on many things including the Katie Piper Foundation and how writing a book with her mum made her feel guilty for what her mum had been through. She also spoke about how her two little girls cope with seeing her go through various treatments, and how you can use every situation to your advantage, as an opportunity to start again. It's a privilege to begin the new series of Spinning Plates with our conversation and how brilliant to see her charity work has been recognised with her recently awarded OBE. On today's episode we're joined by, author, activist, television presenter and personality, Katie Piper, who encompasses the true essence of being a leader. Delving straight in to discuss the driving force behind the charity she founded, The Katie Piper Foundation, Katie explains that establishing a charity was never a route she expected to go down. A life-changing experience gave her clear insight of the support those dealing with burn injuries need. When her life changed overnight, she quickly became aware of treatments she needed that weren't available to her in the UK. So the idea behind her foundation was born – to help make what she had to travel for, more easily accessible for others. After a documentary about her story aired, Katie found that people wanted to help. She and her family paid any donations they received into a bank account with charitable status, with the view to donate this to other survivors of burns and enable them to receive the treatment she had in France. The generosity of these people was a healing experience for Katie and her gratitude to those who helped her was palpable. As time went on, Katie's platform expanded and support never stopped. Eventually, The Katie Piper Foundation became a formalised charity, and she and her team worked on setting up mentoring and workshops, eventually leading to opening their very own centre, enabling treatment to happen in the UK instead of abroad. From being in a coma and having to rebuild her life, to becoming a best-selling author among so many other achievements, Katie's excitement for life and love for connecting with people is infectious. When discussing the importance of consistency and showing up for ourselves, her words are incredibly powerful – “trauma is a part of life, but it doesn't have to be a life sentence”. As Katie shares her closing messages with us, she encourages listeners not to fear the dark times and instead to embrace them. Some of the best times of your life will be the hardest ones, but they can be a catalyst for change – something Katie proves in her own experiences. “Don't just dream and wish, make it happen”.
Episode 5: Tackling Stigma with Katie Piper Gareth and Craig are joined by best-selling author, inspirational speaker, activist, and television presenter Katie Piper. In 2008, Katie survived an acid attack. Since then Katie has produced multiple documentaries, created her own foundation, the “Katie Piper Foundation”, and become a role model and campaigner for acid attack survivors across the country. Whether it's her husband being congratulated for marrying her, or the internalised judgment she placed on herself, Katie has faced stigma at every turn and tells us not only about her own experience but what people can do on a daily basis to put a stop to it. We hope you enjoy this episode, the fifth in our series looking at how we can together tackle stigma, misunderstanding, and discrimination around vital social issues, including HIV. Feel free to get in touch with us with your thoughts, ideas and feedback. Have you always wanted to start your own podcast but not sure where to start? Have you worried about whether it will be successful or if you'll be able to get sponsors? Well, discover today how all this is possible as Rob is joined by three people whose podcasts regularly top the podcasts charts. Discover how they turned their hobby into an income and how you can do the same. KEY TAKEAWAYS Develop your passions into something that can turn into a moneymaker. When you forget about what you think people want and what people will pay for and just do what you want then it will become really popular. If you have an interest in your topic this will come through in your content. When you start your podcast, you may not think you are not very good at interviewing however the more practice you get, the better you will become. A good interviewer makes time for preparation for the guest, listens and gives people the space to talk. Podcasting is an easy passive thing to do, you can listen to it whenever and wherever you like as a form of escapism. People are starting to use podcasts as an easy way to get their personal brand out there. It is an authentic version of reality as opposed to the scripted and structured reality seen on other platforms. Many brands are yet to branch out into podcast advertising and sponsorships. It is about having connections and conversations with brands and not being afraid to be turned down or going back to them a month later with some new ideas. The more you do that, the tide will come and the sponsors will come to you. Your job as a podcaster should be creating great content, getting really good guests and marketing your podcast in as many countries to as many listeners as possible as well as monetising your podcast. One of Kevin's ambitions for the show has been to interview the fabulous writer, activist, model, presenter and mum, Katie Piper, and today the dream becomes a reality. Katie is one of the most familiar and beloved personalities in Britain, not just for her dazzling beauty and warm wit, but also for her courageous championing of charitable causes and her renowned compassion and relatability. In this very special edition of The Kevin Clifton Show, we get up close and personal with Katie, discussing everything from balancing work and home, the importance of stepping outside of your comfort zone, and the ways in which self-analysis and self-belief can help lift you back to the light in the wake of life's darkest moments. KEY TAKEAWAYS Being busy, and living through a hectic schedule, is a mark of positivity and productivity. Both Katie and Kevin enjoy the hustle of creativity and development. Strictly Come Dancing were keen to sign Katie for many years, but her exclusivity deal with Channel 4 prevented her from doing so. However, when that expired in 2018, she jumped at the chance to take to the floor. Whenever you start in something new, you always feel that sense of being stranded. For Katie, the Strictly experience was starkly different to anything she'd experienced before. She was used to being on TV, but dancing on TV was a whole new world. In life, we must always seek the challenge of the next thing. If we're feeling safe, then it's usually a sign of being static. Only when we let go of our inhibitions can we truly begin to enjoy our endeavours. It doesn't come straight away, so don't expect it to happen instantly, but when it does come, that feeling of release will allow you to enjoy life so much more. Podcasting allows Katie to express herself, and to show the world the real, unfiltered side of herself. it also allows her to express her ideas quickly, with complete editorial control, while they're still relevant. Even if you live in the public eye, it's important to have boundaries. People will respect you more in the long run if you can separate your private life from your public life. Confidence is an issue that all performers deal with, and sometimes struggle with. For Kevin, confidence is a huge issue, and although he may seem like an extrovert on Strictly, in social situations and in normal life, he is very shy. Confidence allows us to bounce back from rejection. The self-belief we must have in ourselves, especially as performers, picks us up in the face of a setback, and spurs us on to the next challenge. Life-changing injuries are just that - they never truly heal. Physically, Katie has, and will continue, to receive treatment. Psychologically, she finds herself having to readjust her outlook every now and then. It's an ongoing struggle, but she refuses to let it beat her. It's okay to be negative sometimes. It's okay to be lazy. It's okay to want to isolate yourself, All these things, in the wake of a life-calamity, are your own way of getting through this. So long as you realise this, and that you know it's only temporary. We're so obsessed with identity and occupation. When we ask “What do you do?”, the answer can be so complicated. It's unfortunate that occupation is how we categorise people. Resilience comes through life experience and age. When we are shown the thing we can survive, we discover the things we're capable of. Confidence comes through our embarrassment being shrugged away. We can't spend our lives living in fear of what people think of us, or we're lining ourselves up for a very poor existence. There's a fine line between being self-serving and arrogant, and being nothing but a people pleaser. You need to say no sometimes. You need to remember that your life is your own. You can't please everyone, so you may as well please yourself. We never really use a positive internal commentary by default. Our standard position is to question, and to worry about something. We need to nurture the positive voice. BEST MOMENTS ‘I feel really fortunate to be able to say that I do a job that I'm passionate about' ‘I still don't know the grammatical difference between their and there' ‘I feel like I'm doing a wee with the door open!' ‘Can I change this?' ‘It's normal to get rejected in life. That's okay' ‘I wanted the burn to live with me, not for me to live with the burn' 'There was a moment of clarity' ‘Rock bottom is a great place to start' ‘Politely saying “no” is quite empowering' 'The negatives happen before you've even tried' ‘I am the female Tyson Fury!' Katie Piper survived an acid attack to become a bestselling author, international speaker and TV presenter. In this fascinating interview, Rob talks with Katie about her passion for passive income, how she spends her day and her story post her attack. This is an inspirational story of overcoming a tragic event in their twenties to creating a successful personal and business career. Katie talks through how to become more confident in your life, how she has created multiple streams of income and how to deal with rejection. Key Takeaways How has the attack defined you and your work now? There are so many things that have defined me. I am a different person now to the woman I was in my 20s. I always think that there is a good thing around the corner even when the shit really hits the fan. I've always been self-employed and know the stress and excitement of being self-employed. I trained as a beauty therapist, and worked harder and harder, longer hours to make a bit more money. The attack changed me in a second, but the stress I experienced before prepared me to become more resilient What does your week look like? No day is the same, which is why I want this path. I thought I was stupid at school, but I realised I just wasn't academic. When I was childless and single I said yes to everything and that has led to burnout. But nowadays I say no to more things, and I do work for free doing things. I'm a massive believer in creating passive income, and I want to spend more time with my kids. My charitable things have helped my commercial ventures as well. What do you do for free? That would be on a case by case basis, and I get hundreds of enquiries every day. If I think I can help, I'll say yes, but if it means I will miss my kid's bedtime for the third night in a row then I would say no. You can set up a business and not pay yourself but it's an asset for the future like my podcast. I'm interested in investing in property, because in the media the income can be up and down month to month. Progressive gave me the confidence to invest in property. I try and not put all my eggs in one basket. Katie was a stage name. Before I got attacked I wanted to have a stage name. In the hospital, I saw a psychologist every day and they asked me to write things down. This helped me process those deep and dark thoughts. I decided to put these together in a manuscript and sent it off to publishers. I was rejected for one year. I would post it off every Friday and got rejected a lot. After my documentary, I gained a platform and was able to gain a publishing contract for my autobiography. I've been writing ever since. How do you become more confident? I don't think it is a fixed thing. I'm confident in some areas of my life, and not so much in others. A lot of people want to have consistency in confidence. Confidence is often associated with appearance a lot of the time but this can sometimes be momentary and not sustained. Confidence is about acceptance about how the world is. You should always try and learn more things and gain confidence that way. In the modern world with social media, it can be easy to end up envying others, and believing in a facade. I want to show my kids what the world is really like. I'm really honest with my kids about stuff and treat her like an edited adult. I like people to treat me honestly in life, and it's easier to deal with rejection that way. If we stop talking about these things then they become a negative bigger thing. Getting things done has real satisfaction. This changes when you have staff though. I went through a period with my business where we had people leaving all the time. Not everyone works in that way, and it can be difficult. It's hard to understand when everyone doesn't want to get stuff done in your way. You have to realise that you need different skills in a team, and you need people different from you. I get nervous, and a little bit of self-doubt before I go on TV. That responsibility is good. That nervousness is something that you can embrace. When that stops you have gone flat. It's like reviews however where they are really individual opinions. You can be the best version of you and do the best speech you've ever done but some people will always hate what you've done. If you do care about people you can't empty your cup because then you can't help anyone. In Britain, we don't always tell the truth. When we ask each other, ‘how we are?' we don't always tell the truth. You have to take this on a case by case basis however, you don't have to tell the truth all the time. You can have a facade sometimes to protect yourself but other times it's good, to tell the truth. Money does rule me because I associate money with security. Money gives me opportunity and choice. I accumulate money but I don't really spend it. I don't really spend money on designer labels, I wear Topshop, and rent a designer dress for the day to go on TV. If I did a job different to mine then I might have spent my money differently. I send my most money on food, I always cook from scratch. It's in the £100's of pounds for seven days. I want to live long and I don't want my injuries to shorten my life. What does disruptive mean to you? It's about being unapologetically you. When I was younger people put limits on what I can do. I would put a picture of myself without make-up one but a lot of people will not like that. That might not always turn out well, but that doesn't matter what people think. It's about being accepting of who you are. Best Moments ‘What happened to me was a very small snapshot.' ‘If you're a victim you didn't survive.' ‘I've always known that struggle and have to have a work ethic' ‘When I was in my twenties my job was connected to my aesthetic.' ‘I always think that I experienced something that people experience in their 70's.' ‘I was like a toddler in my twenties.' ‘I learn in a different way.' ‘I'm a big believer in charities, as they helped me so much.' ‘I don't carry guilt if I'm working hard.' ‘Private healthcare can't stop you from dying.' ‘I've become less interested in money, and have a less traditional relationship with money.' ‘It never really is working for free.' ‘I want to put good stuff out there.' ‘I am a controlled risk-taker.' ‘Life is unpredictable.' ‘My book was in the number 1 bestseller Times list.' ‘With self-help, a lot of it is recycled.' ‘I don't always believe in no, just no right now.' ‘Confidence is about acceptance.' ‘Online you can start envying a facade.' ‘Sales don't define books.' ‘Nothing is as catastrophic as you think it is.' ‘It's hard to understand when everyone doesn't want to get stuff done in your way.' ‘Don't judge people on your own standards.' ‘Ego is also not asking for help.' ‘Depression isn't a choice.' ‘To be vulnerable is scary but you can develop your resilience.' ‘The purpose of a critic is to keep us in balance.' ‘Sometimes people put you on a pedestal and it isn't always helpful.' ‘I invest in my health more than my clothes.' ‘I got criminal money and then didn't do anything with it for two years.' ‘Some of our judicial systems is not fit for purpose.' ‘Don't oversell a product, be real.' ‘I was forced to be me, after being disfigured.'
