This week we're celebrating our 200th podcast episode by taking you through our Top Twelve podcasts – the episodes which have had the most downloads since we started the podcast back in 2020  There's a clip from each podcast as well as the link to the whole episode Or if you're really organised you can even make them into a playlist! Numbers 10,11 & 12 So coming in with 2,200 downloads each is a trio of ladies who've taught our Tribe so much about how our brains work… Author Dr Loretta Breuning, Neuroscientist Staci Danford and Stanford Psychiatrist Dr Anne Lembke It's important to remember that we are wired for survival rather than happiness and our default state is one of anxiety as we are on the look out for threats.. However once we understand how to trigger our happy brain chemicals we can structure our days to ensure that we get a regular dopamine hit to lift our mood So let's start with Dr Loretta Breuning who helped me unpack the cause of my own “early sobriety blues” Have a listen to the first interview I did with her which was in August 2021  Loretta also did an interview with me very recently to talk about her new book which is called Why Youre Unhappy – that came out on January 20th this year. The next lady in our trio is neuroscientist Staci Danford who taught us about our Lizard brain and how we need to manage it… she even recommended we give it a name.. she calls hers Ernie! That interview came out in August 2021  Here is a link to that episode  The third of our trio is Stanford Psychiatrist Anna Lembke who's written a top selling book called Dopamine Nation It's an awesome book which I highly recommend if you are interested in the science of addiction – her explanation of the Pain/Pleasure balance is superb That episode is called Why we get Addicted and came out in November 2023  Here is the link  Moving away from neuroscience to number 9 in our Top Twelve In that spot we have Sobriety Coach Lori Massicot – Lori is the host of a podcast called 50 and beyond and like me is convinced that ditching the booze is one of the very best things we can do for ourselves as we get older Her episode is called Why we need to ditch the drink in mid life and came out in December 2021 Here is the link  I also did a fun episode with Lori recently when we listed the 15 Signs that you need to take a Break from Booze – signs that Lori and I ignored for far too long! That one was released on January 27th this year Next up we have Melissa Witherspoon – she's the author of a touching memoir called I'm Sober…So Now What? Melissa has relapsed several times and has some invaluable insights into the various stages of relapse She observed that there are 3 stages of relapse Stage 1 is emotional relapse – not even thinking about drinking yet but observing the triggers that seem to be getting more frequent Stay in Stage 1 long enough without taking action and you may move to Stage 2 which is the mental relapse when you start to feel uncomfortable in your skin – and skip activities like connecting with your sober tribe and sticking to your exercise routine – all things that relieve triggers Stay in Stage 2 long enough and you may move to Stage 3 which is physical relapse when you are back in active addiction The advantage of knowing about these 3 stages are that you can keep your radar sharp for Relapse Warning Signs – all different for different people but you need to be able to pick up if you are feeling a bit “off” as Melissa puts it – keeping a journal is a great way of monitoring your emotions For Melissa it shows up in a lack of self care – if she starts neglecting things like her hair washing routine she will see it as a warning sign and tune in to what's going on.. Learn more from Melissa by listening to the episode which came out on September 2022 and is called Relapse Warning Signs Here is the link  So from the three stages of relapse we go to the 4 stages of alcoholism – a very moving share from Tribe member Vanessa Hilton Barber Vanessa divides her drinking career into phases:- the Fun phase (15-19) the Social phase (19-30) the Fairly Desperate phase (30-39) the I Need to Quit phase (39 onwards) This pattern fits pretty well with Ken Middletons theory that 20 years of regular drinking will result in alcohol dependence Here's a link to that episode  Now we're up to our Top Six and at number 6 with 2.3 downloads is the brilliant William Porter William is a lawyer with a passion for the science behind alcohol dependence and has written 2 books Alcohol Explained and Alcohol Explained 2 They're both essential reading and I think the more we understand the damage that alcohol does to our bodies and brains the less likely we are to want to drink it! His episode is called Why we Get Hangxiety and came out in July 2021  Here's the link Next up is another lovely chap who suggests that we identify ourselves as a non drinker…. From Day One He's called Nigel Jones and is the author of a book called Walking Back to Happiness Nigel's professional background is in marketing and PR so he has a deep understanding of the power of messaging and the effect it has on our subconscious mind.  As he says we are in effect being “groomed” by the liquor industry to be loyal and lifelong consumers.  That episode came out in Jan 2023  called How to be a non drinker  Here's the link  Next up is author of the Sober Diaries – a book that has helped so many people ditch the shame and quit drinking. Claire Pooley was a mom of 3 young children when her drinking was at its worst – she was going through 10 bottles of wine a week and knew it had to stop Clare Pooley is a great example of someone who ditched the booze and made her dreams come true She'd always wanted to be a novelist – when she quit drinking she finally had the time and energy to write – the Sober Diaries got her noticed and she was promptly signed by a top publisher to write 3 novels The Authenticity Project was her first and her second book has the inspiring title of How to Age Disgracefully – it will be out in June this year. Have a listen to Clares episode which came out in April 2021 – its called How I Ditched the Drink  Here's the link  I love her life hack of going to bed early, getting up early to cook and freeze the evening meal That's how she avoiding guzzling a bottle of wine as she cooked in the evening! Now its time for the top 3  Coming in at number 3 with 2,500 downloads is the fabulous Ken Middleton – he's the author of Bamboozled which has the awesome subtitle of How Alcohol Makes Fools of us All! Do grab a copy if you haven't yet read it – a brilliant description of how we've been manipulated by Big Alcohol for decades I often quote Ken who says “even if alcohol doesn't destroy us it will limit our potential” and in fact his latest Tribe Sober episode is called “How Alcohol Limits your Potential” – that one was released in April 2023  Here's the link Ken was also one of our guests back in November 2020 when he shared his own story and explained the science behind alcohol dependence – and why drinking regularly for 20 years means you're very likely to develop a “problem” Next up at number 2 is me! With our very first podcast episode which was released in May 2020 to celebrate my 5th Soberversary Here is the link  And finally hogging the number 1 slot with an incredible 3,300 downloads is Australian Sobriety Coach Kathryn Elliott It's called How to Stop Binge Drinking and came out in June 2022 Here is the link Like me Kathryn has had breast cancer which prompted us to do an episode together recently Neither of us realised that our heavy drinking was putting us at risk of breast cancer so we celebrated breast cancer awareness month by having a conversation about it.. Spreading the word that more than 3 glasses of wine A WEEK increased your risk of breast cancer We called it Drink Less for your Breasts and it was released in October 2023 So that's our Top Twelve A big thank you to all our listeners – thanks to you the Tribe Sober podcast has had more than 300,000 downloads which keeps its global ranking in the top 2% of all podcasts Most importantly more than 20% of our members found their way to us via the podcast More Info Subscription membership – you can join up HERE. Can you jam every memorable moment from horse racing into 30 minutes? No, you can't, but this episode takes us on a journey through the most amazing results, the most intriguing stories and the most talented horses and people who made the headlines in 2023. Host Peter Gross points out that both the Canadian and U.S. Triple Crowns produced 3 winners. He also tells us that invaders took most of the cash from the big money races at Woodbine. Harness racing had all kinds of great stories – TCI winning the William Wellwood, then surging back in the Mohawk Million after breaking stride; Scott Zeron winning the NA Cup, the Hambletonian, the Little Brown Jug, the Jugette and the Kentucky Futurity. Ken Middleton was badly hurt and his absence allowed an army of race callers necessary to replace him. And our Story of the Year is both inspiring and heartbreaking – the tale of Cody Dorman and the great horse named after him.

Join me Jason LaChance host of the Knockin' Doorz Down podcast, certified addiction recovery coach, and mental health advocate for my sit down with special guest Ken Makimsy Middleton the author of Bamboozled…How Alcohol Makes Fools of Us All exposes alcohol for the way it subtly doesn't ruin our lives but also doesn't allow us to grow and develop into the person that we can become. Ken and I not only have a lot of laughs but we dig into facts around alcohol use and why his book isn't for the alcoholic but can lend lots of insight into the negatives of alcohol use from a mental, emotional, and physical health standpoint. We answer the following questions. Why did Ken write a book for individuals who would consider themselves casual or normal drinkers who wouldn't say they had a problem at all? How did an alcohol-fueled instance that saw him and his now wife split for 6 months prior to their marriage lead him to explore an alcohol-free life? How does science back how alcohol physiologically changes our brain and body to keep us trapped in a never-ending cycle of mediocrity? What did he learn from his mother's mental health struggles? How does a victim mentality affect decision-making as it can relate to alcohol use? We finish our conversation with fun random questions and Ken finishes with final thoughts. In this edition of The Way Out I'm delighted to bring you my interview with person in long term recovery, wellness advocate and author of the book Bamboozled: The Guide to Getting EVERYTHING You Want in Life by Giving Up Alcohol, Ken Middleton. Ken shares his journey to and through sobriety to this point with us in an exceptionally enlightening and inspiring fashion. For Ken, getting sober wasn't born out of debilitating alcoholism leading to an ultra-low bottom of despair and hopelessness. No, Ken reckoned with his relationship with alcohol, despite not having severe internal or external consequences and essentially asked himself one big question. What would life look like if he didn't drink? Out of that question an experiment was born, and Ken realized that though Alcohol wasn't destroying his life in the classic crash and burn style, what ken discovered was all the things alcohol was preventing him from being and doing. Said in another way, Ken had a remarkable realization: Alcohol was limiting him and was nothing short blocking him from being the best version of himself. Ken's story is proof positive we don't have to be in the depths of addiction in order to benefit from abstinence, sobriety, and recovery. We can ask ourselves questions similar to what Ken asked himself, such as what could life be like if like if I didn't drink or use for a period of time? Ken suggests 90 days, but you choose the amount of time and then do something we talk often about on this show, run the experiment, and see what happens. You may find you were more dependent on it than you thought and your drinking or use was no mere habit, or you may find that though perhaps you weren't dependent on it, alcohol or substances were acting like a governor on an old school muscle car and keeping your potential pent up, or you may find out something all together different. The only way you'll find out is by running that experiment yourself, and might I suggest you take it in 24-hour segments at a time saying “Self, I'm not going to drink and/or use today”. Then start engaging in a recovery and/or wellness program and begin building a meaningful life filled with purpose as you become increasingly closer to the person you feel called to be. To that end, you'll find plenty of practical tools, insight, and inspiration in Ken's story, which about to unfold before your very ears so listen up. Vanessa is a writer, photographer and wild water swimmer.   Like so many of us she began drinking in her teens.  That was the beginning of a habit that started off as fun but evolved into something much darker over the years. In this episode Vanessa divides her drinking career into phases:- the Fun phase (15-19) the Social phase (19-30) the Fairly Desperate phase (30-39) the I Need to Quit phase (39 onwards) This pattern fits pretty well with the theory that 20 years of regular drinking will result in alcohol dependence If you'd like to hear the science behind that theory then have a listen to my interview with Ken Middleton – episode 23 of Tribe Sober podcast – November 2020 Vanessa tried to moderate and did manage to cut down for periods. However she was still binge drinking now and again so the dependence was still there. Along with her moderation attempts of course she had some rules She started a rule when she was at University and kept it going ever since. It was the 3 day rule.  She would never drink more than 3 days in a row. However she realises now that her 3 day rule actually kept her in a cycle of drinking and then withdrawal. Here in South Africa there is a culture of binge drinking at the weekend Vanessa explained that in her office they used to refer to Thursdays as "Steak Knife Thursdays" as everyone was “on edge” waiting to start drinking. It was Covid that opened Vanessa's eyes to the nation's love affair with alcohol. Several alcohol bans meant that many people had to be creative about sourcing their alcohol. She describes the moment during Covid when she had just a tot of whisky but it released such a strong craving that it made her realise she would have to make a change. Vanessa discovered Tribe Sober and loved the support of the international community. She did Dry July and loved watching the alcohol free days stack up on her tracker. As she learned more about the harm that alcohol does she felt more and more motivated to go alcohol free. So she did Sober October but still had periods of binge drinking. At the beginning of 2021 Vanessa decided to try coaching – as a member of Tribe Sober she had been offered a free coaching session so decided to take it up. She loved her coaching sessions with Lynette and by session 2 she had ditched the booze completely We agreed that Lynette's philosophy that we must get “comfortable with being uncomfortable” is a powerful one By riding the discomfort and pushing through we will experience emotional growth and grow new neural pathways One of the goals that Vanessa set during an early coaching session was that when she reached her first Soberversary she would share the strategies that had enabled her to quit. That's how her stunning book was born…TOTS which stands for the Other Twelve Steps It is full of gorgeous illustrations which came from the doodles she would make during her coaching sessions – doodles she would develop further as she reflected on her learnings She calls TOTS a string of sparkling gems and I couldn't agree more If you'd like a digital copy of TOTs just email membership@tribesober.com and we'll send you a copy In TOT's you will find a description of the Hero's journey along with its transformative challenges Just like the hero we may stumble and fall on our journey but if we keep trying we will succeed Our reward will be the gift of elixirs which will enable us to help others to do what we've done Vanessa also refers to the book "The Artists Way" by Julia Cameron in TOTs We agreed that this book can be the key to unlocking our creativity and doing our daily morning pages can be a life changing habit Vanessa described the benefits of alcohol free living as exponential but a huge one for her has been the energy Now she no longer has to try to control her drinking and manage the after effects she has so much more energy and mental strength This made me think of my interview with William Krause two episodes ago… when he said that redirecting that energy we wasted on controlling alcohol is the key to unlocking the life of our dreams Vanessa referred to her coaching sessions as the key – I love the way she describes the power of coaching – she says it's about “having someone in your story with you”. My guest this week is a young South African woman who is focused on mental health advocacy. Tribe member Anele Ndlovu has been through a journey with her own mental health when she turned to alcohol for solace.  She's the Founder of an initiative called “Tea with Anele Ndlovu” which focuses on women's empowerment and leadership. Anele is a member of Tribe Sober and recently celebrated her six month soberversary! In the episode Like many of us Anele discovered alcohol when she went to Varsity but it was very much a social thing It was all under control during her 20s and early 30's – only in her late 30s did it become a problem We heard a similar story from last weeks guest Sam Delany  That got me thinking about one of my favourite articles by Ken Middleton who explains the science behind alcohol dependence If we drink regularly then over the period of a couple of decades we will move from liking alcohol, to wanting alcohol and finally to needing alcohol. So that explains why some people can drink happily throughout their twenties and most of their thirties but then it switches from a social lubricant to self medication So back to Anele who got retrenched in June 2020 – this was a real blow for her as she loved her career and her identity was very much tied to her job. She felt lost and found herself using alcohol to numb her pain even though she was well aware that this was a red flag of alcohol dependence. Like so many of us Anele began to try to control her drinking – setting rules – rules about not having alcohol in the house – which worked until about 5pm when she started getting fidgety so went out to buy some! Her family were worried about her drinking so she found herself hiding it She would tell then she was going for a walk and then find herself sitting in a bar Or going to the liquor store and then sitting in the part with her drink Getting home from these walks she would shower and go to sleep Of course her family knew what was going on but had no idea how to help Anele also tried hanging out with “Moderation Mary” as we call her in Tribe Sober but obviously that didn't work either Finally she realised that she would have to quit so she went to AA for a while This really helped her at the beginning but as her alcohol free life began to take shape she decided that AA would not work for her long term She made it easier on herself during those first few months by not going out much – and explaining to her close friends that she needed their support, she needed them to be her accountability partners Anele is now 6 months sober with absolutely no desire to drink again She is a proud member of our Tribe Sober 6months+ whatsapp group – people on this group have navigating those early choppy waters of sobriety and are now discussing the next stage of the journey The stage where we create a beautiful alcohol free life – a life we don't want to escape from We talked about sobriety benefits and having more energy is a big one Anele explained that she was always tired when she was drinking Alcohol  saps our energy (and our motivation) so when we've been sober for a while we'll begin to rediscover our enthusiasm for life We'll want to explore new projects and we'll have the energy and TIME to do that. If we've been drinking for years then the fatigue will have built up – easy to confuse this tiredness with the ageing process but just wait until you start enjoying high quality sleep and you'll feel amazing! Anele had always kept a journal – when she was drinking her journal entries were often angry ones but these days she uses it to celebrate her wins and to process her emotions – she's feeling all the feelings and she's learned to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. I asked her for some tips for newbies – she made the very good point that if you are thinking about your drinking and if you are listening to this podcast then it's a sign you need to take action. Did you know that the average timeframe that someone waits between accepting that they have a drinking problem and acting on it is 11 years! That 11 more years of worrying and becoming more dependent! "You have a better version of yourself waiting to be released!” Ken Makimsy Middleton believes there's EXTRAORDINARY inside all of us and alcohol prevents that person from ever existing. For so many of us growing up, we were only warned of the dangers of drinking by one simple standard: Don't become an alcoholic. That was it. As long as you did not fall over into that category of being someone who needed to attend AA meetings or rehab, then you were pretty much okay. What this didn't account for was all the people who were imbibing alcohol on a consistent basis who just weren't reaching their full potential because of it. This book is written as a public service announcement to all of those people. Its purpose is to educate the reader on all the ways alcohol holds us back in life of which we aren't aware and how our lives can be so much better if we are willing to give alcohol-consciousness (the awareness of this truth and daily decision-making related to it) a chance. Come embark on this journey and learn all the things you never knew about alcohol and then make the decision of whether you'll attempt a life of alcohol-consciousness or continue to be Bamboozled. ✅ https://www.instagram.com/kenmmiddleton/✅ https://linktr.ee/kenmmiddleton

This week on the podcast I'm talking with Ken Middleton. Ken has coined the term "alcohol consciousness" and works to help people understand what alcohol is doing in their lives. Ken is the editor of a Medium Publication named AINYF, Alcohol is NOT Your Friend. It's a publication focused on science-based strategies to help individuals change their relationship with alcohol and create the best version of themselves.  Ken coined the term alcohol-consciousness to represent my belief that one should not have to hit rock bottom or have a "problem" with alcohol to quit drinking. Instead, it's something that people should consider to live a more holistic and healthy lifestyle. Ken is  finishing a book on the topic titled Bamboozled - How Alcohol Makes Fools of Us All. It's a book that is focused on individuals who wouldn't consider themselves alcoholics but could still live a much better life by giving it up.  We're talking all about mindful drinking and why it's possible to change your drinking habits even if you're not experiencing alcohol use disorder.  Buy Breaking the Bottle Legacy: How to Change Your Drinking Habits and Create A Peaceful Relationship with Alcohol on Amazon or most online retailers.  US Kindle US Paperback UK Kindle UK Paperback Apple Books Barnes & Noble Kobo Join my private FB group Alcohol Minimalists here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/changeyouralcoholhabit Has this podcast helped you? Healthy women (all ages) and healthy men 65 and older: No more than 3 drinks in one day and no more than 7 drinks per week. One drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor. So remember that a mixed drink or full glass of wine are probably more than one drink. Abstinence from alcohol Abstinence from alcohol is the best choice for people who take medication(s) that interact with alcohol, have health conditions that could be exacerbated by alcohol (e.g. liver disease), are pregnant or may become pregnant or have had a problem with alcohol or another substance in the past. Benefits of “low-risk” drinking Following these guidelines reduces the risk of health problems such as cancer, liver disease, reduced immunity, ulcers, sleep problems, complications of existing conditions, and more. It also reduces the risk of depression, social problems, and difficulties at school or work. If you' are unsure about whether or not you have alcohol use disorder, please visit the NIAAA for more information.

On February 12th, 1990, a tragic accident occurred in which it is believed that Kathy Middleton mishandled a gun in her left hand, accidentally shooting herself one time in the head. The state turned this tragedy into a homicide investigation, sending her husband Ken Middleton to prison for life plus 200 years. In 2004, Ken had an opportunity to present to his motion trial court evidence of ineffective assistance of his counsel, as well as ballistics evidence that proved that the state's theory was impossible. Before the judge ruled, the state offered Ken freedom through an Alford plea, and he refused. Eventually, the judge granted him a new trial, but the state simply challenged that ruling on jurisdictional grounds, leaving Ken in prison ever since. A 2021 law now specifically grants that motion trial court the necessary jurisdiction, yet Ken and his family still await justice from prosecutor Jean Peters Baker. The altered GSR test document is linked here: https://www.instagram.com/p/Ca4rRsDLWaC/To learn more and get involved, visit:http://www.free-kenmiddleton.com/https://www.change.org/p/missouri-missouri-or-miseryhttps://silvercreekentertainment.net/https://twitter.com/TheNewsBreakerhttps://lavaforgood.com/with-jason-flom/Wrongful Conviction is a production of Lava for Good Podcasts in association with Signal Co No1.

Tribe Sober - inspiring an alcohol-free life! My guest this week is Jon Turner, the founder of Soberpunks – he is a musician, a blogger and is busy helping others to ditch the drink. He shares his personal recovery story and explains how he feels that not drinking is not only rebellious but it's positively punk..   In this Episode Like many of us Jon spent a decade trying to cut down – using those tried and tested “rules” that of course are useless once our drinking has crossed that line into dependence – lets face it people who can moderate just do it – they don't need to impose any rules We agreed that accepting that we can not drink any alcohol at all is a key moment on the path to sobriety – “if you can't have one – have none” or as AA say “one glass is too many and a thousand is not enough” Jon drank as a teenager and found that he quickly became the one urging the rest of his mates to drink more and more – we discussed the fact that for some of us the buzz of alcohol is more intense than others – and that's one of the reasons we get hooked when others can take it or leave it It was love that gave Jon the impetus he needed to give up drinking – he met a woman who loved him but hated the person he became when he drank – she made it pretty clear that she would not be sticking around if he continued to drink – so he stopped – and they got married What I really love about Jon's story is that he gave up drinking to please his partner – but after a few months of sobriety he realized that his life was SO MUCH BETTER without the booze he was motivated to continue. Many of us give up drinking to save our relationships and our health but not many of us are expecting sobriety to be much fun. I for one was expecting it to be a grey and boring place but in fact it's turned out to be the opposite for both Jon and myself – so if you're listening to this and you know you need to ditch the booze just try it for 6 months – you will be amazed at the improvements in your life and the chances are you will want to stay alcohol free. Jon eventually got divorced from the lady who convinced him to stop drinking. By then he was hooked on his sobriety and had not intention of restarting his drinking career.  As he puts it – “it would only make a horrible situation worse” That got me thinking about one of our recent Zoom Cafes – several of our members had been through a very tough time – three of them had recently lost a parent and they all said – I'm SO grateful to be sober – I have the strength to cope so much better. I found that really interesting as I remember feeling relatively secure in my sobriety after about six months but often wondering if I would turn to alcohol if something dreadful happened – so it's lovely to hear that Lucy, Merleen and Lexi were not even tempted. Well done ladies. Jon and I agreed that being present for the tough times is key to our emotional development – I remember listening to a podcast with Glennon Doyle when she describes alcohol as the “easy button” that we use to bypass the pain – but we are also missing out on an opportunity to become stronger. Along with being present comes the importance of “getting comfortable with being uncomfortable” – sitting with our thoughts is part of the healing process and can be cathartic. We talked about dealing with partners who drink too much and agreed that people have to want to do it for themselves rather than for anyone else – although Jon had in fact give up for his girlfriend he had been struggling for a long time and was pleased to get a concrete reason to make the change. He did say that sometimes the partner has to decide that in order to protect themselves they will just have to walk away – which can be really hard but may avoid years of pain. I asked Jon to list the benefits of sobriety and he had plenty! Weight loss and having more energy (stop drinking and start running was his advice) Reduction in anxiety – Jon used to have such a feeling of dread on his way into work that he was wishing his train would crash! -  since he is sober he is enjoying his work and is busy fulfilling his career potential. That made me think of one of my previous podcast guests – Ken Middleton, episode 23 - he said “even if alcohol doesn't destroy you it will prevent you from reaching your potential” – that is so true. Jon feels sobriety is a journey of self discovery and he is learning so much about who he is and what he really likes to do. We talked about the joys of a sober community – about how we immediately understand each other and can have fun together – we agreed that ex drinkers have been through a lot and proved themselves to be strong and resilient people – yes ex drinkers rock! Jon is passionate about the fact that those of us in recovery must support others as part of our own recovery – that's exactly what he is doing via his blogs and his FB group. Not going to give it away, but we can say that trainer Darryl Ezra has a unique argument as to why his horse should not have been disqualified from 1st in a race at Fort Erie.

It's amazing how many terrific things happen in horse racing in a week. How about 8 $225,000 OSS Super Finals at Mohawk? You have to hear Ken Middleton's call of the 2 Year-Old Colts and Geldings Pace. We have the E.P.Taylor and Nearctic Stakes from Woodbine. Is Ironstone the best two year old thoroughbred in Canada? Will he give his trainer, Willie Armata his first Queen's Plate contender and will Brazilian jockey Ademar Santos get a shot at Canada's biggest race? It's déjà vu times two for Hall of Fame driver, Paul MacDonell who is winning repeatedly with both a son and a grandson of Somebeachsomewhere. Imagine a night at the track when the same number keeps coming in race after race. Bill Megens turns 88 in a few weeks and he's still winning harness races. Carly Furlonger is about 6 decades younger than that, but she had her greatest day of riding last Wednesday at Ajax Downs. And how about a race from Gulfstream with a horse with no vowels in his name.

Ghosting has come full circle now that it is a talent-driven market!  There is no excuse for ghosting someone on either end of the hiring spectrum. It is a vicious circle that just breeds ill will.   Frankly, as a recruiter, company ghosting helps us to lure your best people out of your company.  Why do companies engage in such behavior? We are going to figure that out today!   Today’s Quote: Your brand is your public identity, what you're trusted for. And for your brand to endure, it has to be tested, redefined, managed and expanded as markets evolve. Brands either learn or disappear.  Lisa Gansky - She was the co-founder and CEO of Global Network Navigator, the first commercial website, which was acquired by America Online   Our guest today: Ken Middleton, DevOps Recruiter of yourdevopsrecruiter.com   Ken M. Middleton spent 10 years working for the largest IT staffing company in the world before deciding it was time to bet on himself. He started YOUR DevOps Recruiter to focus on connecting the best DevOps candidates to the best DevOps companies while evangelizing DevOps to the masses.    One way he accomplishes this is through his YouTube channel, The Dhub Repository, in which he posts weekly DevOps career tips, rants on what bugs him about the recruiting industry, and interviews DevOps SME's on different DevOps topic, in a segment known as DevOps Defined.  I have heard Ken rant about ghosting which is what makes him a perfect guest for today’s show!  Today we are going to cover What Causes Ghosting? How to Stop Ghosting  What is the problem?   Clients ghosting candidates. No feedback or super slow feedback after long extended amounts of time with no updates along the way.  Why might companies’ ghost? Litigation fears Running too fast to pay attention Just lazy, inconsiderate or Arrogant …  What are the causes? HR representatives being overworked with numerous positions. Not considering quick and timely feedback is important to the candidate experience. Not have a clean process in place to follow up with ALL candidates, not just the ones they want to hire. Not giving a sh*t about candidates who they don't want to hire and just letting it fall by the wayside b/c of a feeling of superiority and snootiness towards candidates that apply to them. (i.e. they came to us for a job, right?) Rick’s Two Cents Communication Ghosting occurs on the company side when companies are unsure about a person. Interviewers do not know the right questions to ask, how to dig so they did not gather enough evidence to make a decision. The key indicator of a bad hiring process. No clear structure on the information that needs to be extracted Without direction, people fall back on what they know. Side Note: Your Bad Glassdoor reviews are a recruiter's best friend… How to treat people interviewing at your company  Solutions Stop having your HR representative work on so many positions at one time - Prioritize what's important...not what you MIGHT need down the road or later. Create an automated process to respond to applicants - There are CRM's that have this functionality where you can send multiple emails to candidates.  Avionte, what I use, is able to do this. Create a better follow up process for quick feedback - Schedule the feedback meeting within 24 hours of the interview. Don't let it happen by chance. It needs to be planned and everyone has to understand the importance of it. Create standards for feedback to all candidates and an update process/rhythm - Just because you don't have an answer doesn't mean you shouldn't communicate with your candidates. At least once a week is a good rhythm that will keep them engaged and protect your company's brand to not be a "ghoster." Give a sh*t - Not Just because it's the right thing to do but because it protects/helps your company's brand and ability to recruit in the future.  Understand that feedback is part of the candidate experience (some would argue the most important since primacy and recency (first and last) is often what people remember about most experiences)   Rick’s Process to eliminate ghosting Eliminate the transactional mentality Protect your company brand Understand the Reality of the Talent Market Breed the right culture Communication, gather feedback quickly  *** Realtime Feedback!! Process for quick decision making & feedback Lead person monitoring the interview (founder, HR, Recruiter, Admin) Build in Knock-Out questions Debrief each interviewer as they exit the interview. (Max 10 minutes) - add that to the managers calendar Evidence to support a “No” If they dont pass the knockout, let them go   Key Takeaways Feedback (good or bad) is super important to candidates and if you want to attract the best talent and protect your company brand you need to get great at delivering this in a timely manner. This doesn't happen unless you make it a priority as part of your candidate experience process, and if you don't think you have a process, you actually do and I'm pretty sure it's BAD. We all need to CARE more.  Looking for a job is sometimes one of the hardest and most difficult times in someone's life, and we need to treat people with that in mind in relations to our interactions, as opposed to just focusing on fill another job for your company.
