As the IndyCar season rolls to its midway point and prepares for the introduction of the new hybrid system, Conor Daly and co-host Chase Holden are back on Speed Street with all the latest news. This past weekend saw the IndyCar paddock take on the famed Laguna Seca Raceway and friend of the show Alex Palou once again found victory lane. Conor and Chase recap all the action, which included some teammate beef, off-roading, uncharacteristic Penske struggles and a whole slew of penalties. They also discuss how David Malukas and Nolan Siegel fared in their returns to IndyCar action and how NASCAR's rain delay in New Hampshire ultimately affected IndyCar's weekend ratings return.Race winner Alex Palou joins the show to discuss how he returned to victory lane for the third time this season after capturing the pole position. Conor asks how Alex managed to stay in front on the late restarts and hold off charges from Colton Herta and the rest of the field. Chase inquires if Alex has had any off-road moments at Laguna Seca in the simulator and how he's feeling about his chances at the upcoming oval races. They also chat about Alex's Indianapolis 500 performance and the upcoming debut of the hybrid system at Mid-Ohio. Finally, the guys ask if Alex would consider a new victory lane celebration and how he is enjoying fatherhood.
There's a good chance we won't see much of Michael Gilbert in the MotoAmerica Championship in 2024 as he and his brother have taken over the running of the family business. That being said, he has leathers, a helmet and a Honda Fireblade at his disposal just in case. And there's also the fact that Laguna Seca Raceway is only a five-or six-hour drive north from Gilbert's Southern California home. In the meantime, Gilbert is going racing in the World Endurance Championship round at the iconic Spa-Francorchamps - the Spa 8-Hour - and he will do so with two of his best friends - Jason Pridmore and Andrew Lee. We spoke with Gilbert about all that and more on this week's episode of Off Track With Carruthers And Bice.Support the Show.

Sea Otter 2024 has landed, merging trade-show tech with bike-festival vibes. Our editorial duo of Jack Luke and George Scott are pounding the grounds of Laguna Seca Raceway to bring you the best bits. This podcast focuses on the best of the drop-bar tech seen on day one. Jack Luke almost lost his marbles when he spotted Ritchey's new Montebello randonneur bike, and was blown away by 5Dev's scuff-proof cranks. There also were some fancy bikes from the likes of Parlee, while the team got a hands-on look at the new Cane Creek Invert gravel fork that has certainly stirred up plenty of comments. Hello again Racing Ears, This is a special episode where I was fortunate to be able to have a chat with Rob Dyson and Rick Knoop at the same time. Rob and Rick were both very gracious to spend time with me chatting about sports car racing / professional road racing in all of its splendor and lore that was rekindled during this glorious phone call during Christmas Break 2023. Rob Dyson is a professional race car driver and team principal at Dyson Racing and has been involved in the sport for over 45 years. I first observed Rob Dyson and Price Cobb driving the #16 Porsche 962 at Laguna Seca in the 1985 Nissan Monterey Triple Crown weekend which was a part of the IMSA Camel GT series, the same race where I first observed Rick Knoop driving the Jim Busby Racing #67 BF Goodrich Special Porsche 962. In 2001, I became reaquainted with sports car racing again following nearby events in the American Le Mans Series at Sears Point and Laguna Seca. In 2002, Team Dyson brought out a new to them Lola MG that was in the LMP 675 class to Laguna Seca and subsequently had their first runs with the car after acquiring it after Petit Le Mans that year. One of the greatest triumphs in motorsports that I have witnessed occurred in 2003 at Sears Point were Dyson Racing in their Lola MG LMP 675 #16 racing car driven by James Weaver and Butch Leitzinger beat the ever dominant Team Joest Audi R8 LMP 900 for the outright win at the 2003 Grand Prix of Sonoma. This victory has stood out in my memory for many years. I want to sincerely express my thanks to both Rick Knoop and Rob Dyson and Dyson Racing for allowing this call to happen. Hello again Racing Ears, Mr Producer and I were able to attend the 2024 CSRG David Love Vintage Races held at Sears Point International Raceway in Sonoma California. It was great to see this place in its glory on a late winter Saturday after a very wet winter with its green hills and tiny white flowers popping up all around the circuit. Got to do more interviewing of participants with their cars and their opinions of the new track resurfacing that happend over the winter. I also was able to capture these great cars coming through turn 2 in the various racing groups as they ran back on Saturday of the weekend. Thanks again for listening to The Racing Ear Podcast! I also wanted to mention that The Racing Ear Podcast is being featured on FeedSpot as being a part of the "10 Best California Car Podcasts". Hello again Racing Ears, Here is a great conversation that I had with Kim Schiedel who is and was the owner of Schiedel's Fleet Services in Sacramento California for many years. Kim has recently retired. Kim also has many interests and passions that have allowed him to be involved in many endeavors throughout his life. Hello again Racing Ears,I wanted to put together an episode for someone that went out of their way to allow me the opportunity to have a tour inside of a 50,000 watt major metropolitan radio station in Sacramento California. Lou Gesicki who's radio name is Sweet Lou Gallagher gave me a tour of KFBK News Radio 1530AM and 93.1FM on the eve of Thanksgiving 2023. Sweet Lou often times would fill in for Pat Walsh who does "The Pat Walsh Show" on KFBK News Radio 1530 AM and 93.1 FM from 7pm till 10pm on weeknights in Sacramento California. Sweet Lou had put out a request on the "Memories of Sacramento" facebook group to convert aircheck cassettes from one of his morning radio shows on Magic 101.1 FM in Auburn California from back in late 2000 to very early 2001. The show was called Mornings with Lou and Mel on Magic 101.1 FM in Sacramento California. Lou Gallagher and Melanie Polka were the predominant hosts of the show. I was able to chat with him about his career in the radio industry on the night that he gave me a tour of the iHeart Media radio station which included KFBK and KSTE, the station that carries the "Armstrong and Getty" morning radio program on Talk 650 KSTE. I wanted to thank Pat Walsh for being willing to share the aircheck recordings with his audience recently. I also appreciated the opportunity to be able to attend Lou Gesicki's Celebration of Life back in early March 2024. Lou was also involved with a regular 3pm to 6pm PST afternoon drive internet radio show that is called "That 70's Channel", which is an internet radio station that features 70's radio hits. The slogan is "The Biggest Hits Of The 70's, And More..." Lou was also involved in a YouTube channel that was with his best friend Ronnie called "Men Are So Smart". Lou was also the track announcer for the All American Speedway in Roseville California for a period of time as well. He used to interview people who were enjoying the auto racing that regularly happened on Saturday nights during the hot Sacramento summer nights. I converted one of Lou's aircheck tapes into a YouTube video that is on my channel called "The Observant Ear" which is titled, "Magic 101 FM Morning Show" Thank you again Sweet Lou and his wife Teresa for making the tour of KFBK possible. Renger van der Zande is teamed with Sebastien Bourdais in the IMSA WeatherTech Series racing a Cadillac GTP car for Chip Ganassi Racing. We caught up with him for this interview during a cold and rainy press day for the 2023 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. Besides being a multiple winner at the Rolex 24hrs of Daytona, Renger has successfully competed in multiple classes around the world. In this interview, Renger talks about the differences to the new (for this year) hybrid powered Cadillac compared to last year, gives props to his teammate in regards to their race at Long Beach last year and talks about his thoughts on what the strengths of his race car is and how he wants to get back to the winner's circle. A true gentleman and supremely talented race car driver; it didn't take too much longer before he found himself in Victory Lane at Laguna Seca Raceway in May. Enjoy! NOTE: Renger will be racing in the season finale this weekend (Oct. 11-14, 2023) at the Motul Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. By Larry Mason Copyright © 2023 Larry Mason

Russell Joyce's family landed in Monterey County, California, thanks to his father's love of car racing and the nearby Laguna Seca Raceway. Ever since, Russell's been in the driver's seat of his family's grape growing and winemaking endeavors at Joyce Wine Company, with a commitment to minimalist winemaking and working with organically grown grapes. Vineyards and wine have been a mainstay of his life, ever since he was a little boy, working with his father, who planted their first vineyard behind the family home. Today, Russell's enjoying sharing his passion with his young son. Russell's also helping preserve the past, recently acquiring a historic winery property in southern Monterey County, in the Arroyo Seco AVA. Russell and his wife Charlotte have been renovating the historic former Ventana Winery site, now home to Joyce Wine Co.'s winemaking facilities. You can visit and taste the Joyce wines here among the vines, and you can also experience the wines at the Carmel Road tasting room. The Marys chat with Russell about his road to wine and the newest chapter in his family's wine journey.

Hello again Racing Ears,Ever since I first laid my eyes on the amazing Porsche 962 back in 1985 when I was 13 years old at Laguna Seca Raceway, I have always been a fan of the spectacular era that was the IMSA Camel GTP racing series in North America in the mid to late 1980's. Rick Knoop co-drove the BF Goodrich Jim Busby Racing number 67 Porsche 962 with Jim Busby at the 1985 Monterey Triple Crown held at Laguna Seca Raceway. I attended on Saturday of the weekend in May 1985 with my Dad and I remember having an amazing time watching the IMSA GTP pracitce and qualifying sessions. Laguna Seca was still in its original configuration and after chatting with Rick Knoop in this episode you really get to hear a highly detailed and descriptive account of what those first 4 corners were really like at Laguna Seca back in that era. We touched on a few memories that include the winter testing at Riverside Raceway , 1985 Sunbank 24 at Daytona, 1985 Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring, 1985 Los Angeles Times / Nissan Grand Prix at Riverside, the 1985 Nissan Monterey Triple Crown at Laguna Seca, and the 1987 Ford California Grand Prix at Sears Point, with a light sprinkle of Can Am, NASCAR, and Historic Formula 1 Racing. Many thanks to Rick Knoop for another amazing interview! Hello fellow Racing Ears,My name is Trent Barr and I love historic sports car racing. I am in my late 40s and I want to start my old podcast up again. The Racing Ear started in 2014 where my goal was to go to historic racing events and record the sounds of the cars in their element, at the race track. I started with a simple hand held recorder which later evolved into shooting video with my iPhone. Along the way I have met many great people associated with historic sports car racing. I was granted access to many great events at Sonoma Raceway that was with the Classic Sports Racing Group (CSRG) starting in 2014. I was granted media credentials for the Porsche Rennsport Reunion V in 2015 and VI in 2018 events that were held at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey California. This podcast will now be more focused on talking with folks that are associated with historic sports car racing. Thank you so much for listening to The Racing Ear Podcast.

Mary McGee has been busy lately. In July, she was a guest at the Superbike World Championships at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on the Monterey Peninsula. A few weeks later, McGee was a guest at The Sacramento Mile, the long-standing motorcycle event. McGee's presence at various events provides a chance for the public to recognize the pioneering race car and motorcycle driver now age 82. Inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame last November, Mary is our guest on episode #98 of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Mary McGee in 1962 competed in the first motorcycle race held at Laguna Seca Raceway. Image © Bob Heathcote/WeatherTech Laguna Seca Rcaway. I had the opportunity to interview McGee during the Superbike World Championships. Bruce joined me when we interviewed Mary in the coffee shop at the DoubleTree in Sacramento the day before the Sacramento Mile. McGee arrived earlier in the day after a several-hour drive in her 17 1/2-year old Toyota Tundra from her home in Gardnerville, Nev., to Sacramento. During our wide-ranging podcast, the women's sports pioneer discussed the trials, tribulations and successes of her career. She stopped riding at age 77 because of severe arthritis in her hands. She talks with the energy of youth, walks with a purpose and remains fit. Mary grins and laughs often. She dons a healthy supply of curly white hair. In this episode I chat with professional motorcycle road racer Braeden Ortt who races a Kawasaki ZX-6R in the Supersport class of the MotoAmerica racing series. The 19 year old racer will be entering his sophomore year of college in the Fall and continuing his major in Chemistry, with future plans to be a plastic surgeon. In the meantime he is racing in two motorcycle racing series as well as enjoying other outdoor sports like snowboarding, wake surfing and jet skiing. Braeden and I talk about motorcycle racing in general, and in particular some of the challenges of the Corkscrew at the Laguna Seca Raceway, including his recent crash there during Sunday qualifying. Braeden survived the crash relatively unscathed and walked away with minor injuries. He expects to be able to race in the next MotoAmerica round, August 10-11 in Sonoma, CA. One of my goals in helping grow the sport of motorcycling, is to bring more attention to motorcycle racing, and in particular motorcycle racing in the US, with series such as MotoAmerica. Even if you don’t watch or follow motorcycle racing, or any form of racing, I think you will really enjoy learning from this amazingly talented and driven 19 year old racer from Canada. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I enjoyed doing it! During his 1987 visit to the United States and Canada, Pope John Paul II spent two days in Northern California. KCBS Radio reporters stayed with the pontiff during those two days, covering a Papal Mass at Laguna Seca Raceway, visits to the Basilica of the Mission of San Carlos in Carmel and Mission Dolores in San Francisco, a event at Saint Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco, and his final stop, a Papal Mass at Candlestick Park. This recording is a "telescoped" set of highlights from the coverage.
Joey Hand is among the country's most versatile race car drivers. He's competed as a solo driver on more than a half-dozen series through the years, the American LeMans Series to Formula BMW and Toyota Atlantic to Star Mazda. Like his father, Hand began his career in kart racing. Hand's son is now the family's third generation in racing and is also involved in kart racing. Sacramento race car driver Joey Hand will compete Sept. 7-9 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Hand, 39, from Sacramento, currently a Ford Factory driver, is our guest on Episode 52 of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia discuss with Hand his versatile victories in the 24-Hour of LeMans, Rolex 24 at Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring. We also discuss Hand's current successful season and the season-ending finale. In what he describes as his home race course, Hand will race Sept. 7-9 in the IMSA Weather Tech SportsCar Championship series at Laguna Seca Raceway in Salinas. He's currently in third place in the standings. When he's not competing, Hand's supports his son Chase (age 11) when he races throughout the West Coast. Joey Hand is also an Internet phenomenon. A video showing his car crash and repeated flips during a 2006 race in Lexington, Kentucky, is viral. It's often referenced when Hand, who suffered no major injuries in the crash, meets fans at races. Hand also discusses raising his son during the podcast episode, details participating at the highest levels of racing and discusses endurance racing when a vehicle has multiple drivers.
