For Palestinians, the 2024 celebration of Land Day took on special meaning as the Israeli government attempts a "final solution" of ethnic Gaza, and the military has destroyed or poisoned vast swaths of territory that has sustained the indigenous population for millennia. Also, historian Gerald Horne weighs in on the dangerous climb of the escalation ladder in West Asia and Ukraine. In this episode we're going to hear a program organized by the Adalah Justice Project and the American Friends Service Committee earlier this month, marking the Land Day anniversary and the beginning of Ramadan. The first Land Day in Palestine took place on March 30, 1976, when Palestinians organized large demonstrations and a nation-wide strike against Israel's plan to seize Palestinian land to build Jewish-only settlements. They were met with brutal Israeli repression and the massacre of six Palestinians. On Land Day in 2018, more than 100,000 Palestinians joined the historic Great March of Return in Gaza to protest Israel's inhumane blockade and demand that millions of Palestinian refugees be given the freedom to return to their homes. This year, the Islamic holy month of Ramadan began on April 1. The day before, on Land Day, the Israeli government unleashed a new round of violence on Palestinians. In the program you'll hear Palestinian activists from Gaza, the West Bank, and 1948 Palestine shared their reflections and analyses of the current situation on the ground across Palestine, and what recent moments of popular resistance mean in the broader context of the Palestinian struggle. First, Adam Horowitz, Mondoweiss' Executive Editor, talks with Sandra Tamari, the Executive Director of the Adalah Justice Project. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. Julio and guest co-host Terrell Jermaine Starr, senior fellow at the Atlantic Council and host of the Black Diplomats podcast, are joined by Renée Graham, associate editor and columnist for The Boston Globe, and Shefali Luthra, health reporter for The 19th. They talk about the latest on the war in Ukraine, and attacks by Israeli forces on Palestinians in occupied East Jerusalem. They also discuss the rise of restrictive anti-abortion and anti-trans legislation across the country. ITT Staff Picks: Mohammed El-Kurd writes about Land Day in Palestine on March 30, and the “Israeli regime's architecture of displacement,” in this article for The Nation. Shefali Luthra writes about Kentucky's far-reaching abortion ban, which takes effect immediately, making it the first state where clinics will completely stop providing abortions, via 19th News. “Alabama isn't the first state to ban health care specific to transgender youth,” writes Renée Graham, “But Ivey is the first governor to endorse making criminals of medical professionals who offer necessary care to youth related to gender identity,” for the Boston Globe. On Wednesday, April 6, EFF leader Julius Malema, alongside other party leaders, led the EFF picket dubbed “Land Day” at businessman Johann Rupert's farms in Stellenbosch. According to Malema, they had come to address white monopoly capital.
This week Lara and Michael celebrate the 50th episode of The Palestine Pod. We do a quick recap of guests and share our appreciation for everyone who has enjoyed the project so far. We cover the various shootings that occurred over the past few weeks. Some at the hands of the occupation, and some at the hands of Palestinians resisting. We discuss the difference in reaction when Ukrainians resist using violence vs. when Palestinians resist using violence. We dissect how the Israeli media is trying to justify the occupation of Palestine while supporting the right to self-defense from the occupation in Ukraine. We discuss the real origins of terrorism and the gravity of the violence that Palestinians face every single day. A former Israeli general promises Palestinians another Nakba. The so-called "safest place for Jews" needs to recommit itself to security apparently, by beefing up its police budget. We cover the occupation's reaction to Palestinian resistance which includes a stupidly named "Operation Break the Wave" and how that includes tear gassing hospitals. US Senators obstruct justice in the name of "fighting antisemitism" and we also cover Land Day and the various protests around the world commemorating the Palestinians who lost their lives protecting their land. We talk about how the Israeli lobby is gunning for Lowkey, and the New York Times finally mentions the Apartheid Israel report, some 52 days late, and only as a footnote.
March 30 is commemorated as Land Day in Palestine – a commemoration for Arab citizens of Israel and Palestinians of the events of that date in 1976 in Israel. In 1976, in response to the Israeli government's announcement of a plan to expropriate thousands of dunams of land for state purposes, a general strike and marches were organized in Arab towns from the Galilee to the Negev. On today's program, I speak with Palestinian, Noura Mansour, about Land Day in Palestine this year.
Today Tunisian president Kaies Saied dissolved the parliament after parliament members challenged the autocratic powers he has exercised since his self-coup last July. Last Wednesday, lawmakers held an online meeting, defying Mr. Saied's warning that the session was illegal, and a majority voted against his power grab, which they said violated the country's Constitution. Elected in a landslide in 2019, the president has been ruling by decree since July, jailing opponents, suspending parts of the Constitution, dismissing the Supreme Judicial Council and restricting press freedom. Khalil Bendib spoke with our Tunisian correspondent Mohammed-Dhia Hemmami about the current political situation in Tunis. To commemorate Palestinian Land Day, an annual event dating back to March 30, 1976, when six unarmed Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces during protests against the Israeli government's expropriation of large tracts of Palestinian land for Jewish settlers, we also bring back a 2014 conversation with UC Berkeley Professor Samera Esmair about the return of some of the Palestinian refugees to their village Kafr Bir`im, located in northern Palestine in the Galilee, whose residents were expelled in 1948. Mohamed-Dhia Hammami is an independent researcher and analyst and a PhD Student at Syracuse University. Samera Esmeir is Assistant Professor of Rhetoric at the University of California, Berkeley.

On March 30th, 1976, Palestinians held a rare protest against ongoing theft of their land by Israelis. For daring to hold a peaceful protest, they were massacred by Israeli troops. This was the sort of response they thought likely, which is why such protests were so unusual back then.

Joe Catron went to Palestine’s Gaza Strip in March 2011, on the first international solidarity delegation to cross the Rafah border after the fall of Egypt’s Mubarak government, and lived there through October 2014. Over three and a half years in the besieged coastal enclave, he joined popular protests along Israel’s separation barrier, including many to mark Land Day, Nakba Day, and other Palestinian national commemorations, accompanied farmers and fishermen in Israeli-enforced access-restricted areas, supported campaigns in solidarity with Palestinian political prisoners, and assisted local organizations through editing and training. During Israel’s military offensive in summer 2014, he and other international volunteers established a constant presence in hospitals threatened by Israeli bombardment and accompanied rescue efforts in conflict areas. His writing and photography from Palestine have appeared in +972 Magazine, BBC, Electronic Intifada, Middle East Eye, the New York Times, Newsweek, and various other media. Near a fence that the western press refers to as a border, there has been a massacre of unarmed civilians carried out by heavily-armed soldiers most every Friday since last March.
This week Palestine Remembered commemorates Land Day by recalling the events of 1976 as well as the “Great march of Return” and the brutal killing of 18 Palestinians, we also pay tribute to recently passed Palestinian artist Reem Banna and play the second part of Robert’s interview with Rev Dr Stephen Sizer.
In this episode of the Middle East Weekly we discuss the events that occurred in Gaza this past weekend, when the Israeli Defense Forces killed 18 people and injured nearly 1000 people in reaction to Palestinian demonstrations near the border fence which separates Gaza from Israel. The Palestinian protests began on the anniversary of Land Day and were to be the beginning of a six-week long campaign called the Great Return March, raising awareness about the Palestinians’ rights to return to the homes they were displaced from in Israel in 1948. At the end of the podcast, we also provide some updates on the deal that Netanyahu made, and then abruptly cancelled, regarding the status of African migrants in Israel.

In Palestine, on Friday, March 30, Land Day, thousands of Palestinians demonstrated. This began six weeks of protests leading up to the 70th anniversary of the Nakba on May 15. Israeli soldiers fired at the demonstrators with live ammunition killing 17 and wounding over one thousand. We speak with author and activist Miko Peled about the violent occupation of Palestine by Zionists. The United States is a top supporter of the occupation through funding of the Israeli military and providing cover for Israeli violations of international law in the United Nations. Peled emphasizes that activists in the US have a responsibility to take action to end the occupation of Palestine and outlines many ways to do this, including an aggressive BDS campaign and support for legislation in Congress. Peled says “Israel” is an illegitimate state and the area should be called Palestine. He also speaks about his newest book, “Injustice: The Story of the Holy Land Foundation Five.” For more information, visit www.ClearingtheFOGRadio.org.
Israel has killed 18 protesters and injured over 1,500 after opening fire with live ammunition on the Gaza border. This happened during Land Day, an annual protest of Israel’s annexation of large tracts of Palestinian land in 1976. As Israel intensifies its Zionist settler-colonial project, could this signal another military assault on the Gaza strip? We are joined by Haithem el-Zabri, an Austin-based Palestinian activist and director of the Palestine Online Store (palestineonlinestore.com).Houston police are coming under scrutiny for the shooting of 34-year-old Danny Ray Thomas. Thomas was unarmed and experiencing a mental health crisis when he was shot and killed by officer Cameron Brewer. The officer was carrying a Taser at the time, but opted for lethal force instead. What does this mean for the state of police reform in Texas? Chris Harris of Grassroots Leadership weighs in on body cameras, the role of police in society, local response to the Austin bombings, and the state of Black Lives Matter and related movements for black liberation.
On today's episode of Loud & Clear, Brian Becker and John Kiriakou are joined by Jamier Sale, an activist with the ANSWER Coalition who has been organizing protests demanding justice for Stephon Clark; Gloria La Riva, the Peace and Freedom Party’s 2018 California gubernatorial candidate; and Aislinn Borsini, an organizer with Black Lives Matter Chicago. An independent inquest has found that Stephon Clark, the African-American man killed by police in Sacramento last week, was shot eight times. Six of those shots were from behind. Protests in Sacramento have grown steadily since Clark was killed, and sympathetic protests have taken place all over the country. Israeli soldiers killed 17 Palestinians and wounded at least 1400 more on Friday during Land Day demonstrations in Gaza. Twenty Palestinians remain in critical condition. No Israelis were killed or wounded. Why would these protesters put their lives on the line? And why would the Israelis kill them? Longtime peace activist and Code Pink member Tighe Barry and Daoud Kuttab, an award-winning Palestinian journalist whose latest book is “Sesame Street Palestine: The Ups and Downs of Producing a Children’s Program,” join the show. Monday’s regular segment “Education for Liberation with Bill Ayers” looks at the state of education across the country. What’s happening in our schools, colleges, and universities, and what impact does it have on the world around us? Today focuses on the teacher strikes across the nation with Bill Ayers, an activist, educator and the author of the book “Demand the Impossible: A Radical Manifesto.” President Trump killed any hope for a DACA deal just minutes before entering church on Easter Sunday, when he tweeted about an imaginary caravan of illegal immigrants making its way to the United States, that the U.S. does not have any border laws because liberals in Congress prevented them from being passed, and that he would kill NAFTA if Mexico doesn’t do more to close the border. All of Trump’s claims in these tweets are demonstrably false. Carolyn Gomez, a labor organizer and community activist, joins the show. China announced an additional $3 billion in tariffs on US goods, including pork, fruits, and seamless steel pipes, in the wake of President Trump’s initiation of a trade war with that country. The new Chinese tariffs will hit farmers in many states that Trump won in the 2016 election. Jude Woodward, London mayor Ken Livingstone's advisor on culture and creative industries and the author of the new book “The US vs China: Asia's new Cold War?” and Sputnik news analyst Walter Smolarek join Brian and John. Winnie Mandela, the former wife of South African President and anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela, has died at 81. Winnie Mandela fought apartheid with her husband for decades, but the two grew apart during his incarceration and divorced soon after his release from prison. The hosts discuss her important legacy. Mwiza Munthali, the host of the WPFW radio show “Africa Now!”and formerly with the advocacy group TransAfrica Forum, joins the show.President Trump said today that he would freeze $200 million earmarked for Syrian recovery and development, just days after saying he wanted to pull out of Syria as soon as possible. The freeze and the president’s comments contradict both State Department and Defense Department policies. Brian and John speak with Massoud Shadjareh, founder of the Islamic Human Rights Commission.
Deadly clashes have broken out between Palestinian protesters and Israeli troops along the Gaza border, with at least 15 people dying. The violence took place on Land Day, which symbolises the demand of Palestinian refugees and their descendants to be allowed to return to their homeland.
Land Day in Palestine commemorates the confiscation of Palestinian land by the Israeli state. On this years day of commemoration, 17 Palestinian were killed in Gaza during the peaceful "Great Return March". Coming up on May 15, 2018, we look to the Nakba - or Catastrophe - to remember the 70th year anniversary of Palestine being stolen from its indigenous population. Join us to listen to Zeiad Abbas Shamrouch, a Palestinian refugee from Dheisheh Camp.
On today's episode of Loud & Clear, John Kiriakou and Walter Smolarek and Nicole Roussell (sitting in for Brian Becker) are joined by Ali Abunimah, the co-founder of The Electronic Intifada and author of the book The Battle for Justice in Palestine and journalist and filmmaker Dan Cohen. In demonstrations today, the Israeli army and police massacred at least ten Palestinian protesters, injured more than one thousand people, and many more were arrested. In response to the Israeli government’s announcement that it would expropriate thousands of acres of Palestinian land to build a settlement, a general strike and protests were organized in Arab towns all over the country in 1976, and ever since today has been commemorated as Land Day.
Palestine Remembered discusses two new polls, one in Australia and one in Israel and the results couldn't be more divergent. We also discuss Land Day, the Palestinian annual commemoration of the loss of Palestinian lands, a call for an open ended hunger strike inside Israeli jails, as well as remembering a friend of Palestine, Ahmed Kathrada. We invite our listeners to SMS questions and comments to 0437 990 415.
