Missionary Jim Wright gives an update on his ministry. Originally given Wednesday evening April 12, 2023.
Episode Summary:In this episode of SaaS Origin Stories, Phil speaks with Richard White, CEO of Fathom, a free Zoom app that records, transcribes, and highlights the key moments from your Zoom calls so you can focus on the conversation instead of taking notes. He is also the Founder and was the CEO of UserVoice; currently, however, he is Chairman of the Board at the same company. One of his previous colleagues, Jim Wright, has praised him for his approach to problem solving, “Rich is one of those developers who can see the whole picture and find a real world solution, not just a fix for a particular technical issue.”They discuss how the conception of SaaS products are usually due to finding roadblocks in technology, what it's like searching for investors, the amount of effort it takes to keep an audience's attention, and how Fathom became a Zoom native app and if they have any plans to expand outside of it.Guest at a Glance:Name: Richard WhiteAbout Jon: Richard White is the CEO of Fathom, a free Zoom app that records, transcribes, and highlights the key moments from your Zoom calls so you can focus on the conversation instead of taking notes. Ever since the pandemic, people have been faced with this issue, and after researching into the user experience, Richard came up with the idea for Fathom, an app which takes important notes from zoom meetings so you don't have to.Understanding what users want and need is a skill; it's something you have to train yourself to look out for. Pay attention to how your customers are speaking, how they're asking questions, what specific words are they using? It's only because of this ability that Fathom was able to exist in the first place.Searching Far-and-Wide for InvestorsSince its conception, Fathom has managed to raise about six million dollars in investments; a million of that money is from the users themselves. It started off by asking friends and family and putting on events, but they also wanted to try to reach people with connections to Zoom, considering it was the platform they were focused on. If they could find people there to invest, then they could not only raise money, but they could build solid and professional relationships. They also did a WeFunder campaign which allowed users to donate and invest.“I've found that, when you get people putting their own skin in the game - angels and our users - you just get a very different kind of relationship and engagement.”Houston, We're Ready for Takeoff…You have to make sure that before you launch your SaaS product, everything is ready. Richard explains, although they had a rough version of Fathom ready within the first few months, it took about a year before they could confidently release it into the world. In fact, a lot of the time, even when your product is in the early stages of its existence, warts and all, it's easy to see what it could evolve into, and if you can envision that end goal, then you can easily tolerate some of the bugs at the beginning.“If you can create something that solves a problem you have, and make sure there's a big market for that problem, it's such a hack. I had such high conviction for the product at an early stage because it's like, I'm willing to tolerate some of the bugs at the beginning, we just needed to polish it up.”Keeping the Audience's AttentionWhen creating anything - not just a SaaS platform - that involves grabbing an audience's attention, you need to be able to keep them interested for at least the first five minutes, otherwise your product just won't work or take off. Once you've lost a customer's attention and focus, it's exceedingly hard to get it back, so make sure your product performs the best it possibly can when showcasing it. Try to take a step back from your work and be honest with yourself about it, be subjective - ask yourself what you need to alter, what needs to go and what needs to be added. This way, you're more likely to keep the audience engaged and interested.“You learn a lot of things about how hard it is to get people's attention. We actually started off as a desktop app, then a zoom app, but we moved back to being a desktop app because we saw that in the zoom app, people would start a meeting and then they'd have to remember to turn on Fathom [...] It's very easy to be forgotten, especially when you're trying to change people's habits and behaviors.”
Did you know there are two types of happiness? Natural and synthetic happiness! In this mini-series, we discuss happiness science, the difference between the two, and how we can use both to our advantage. Transcript: Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in about 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life. I'm your host Katie Jefcoat, and while I certainly wish that happiness science was a subject they taught in school, it is something we tend to have to learn all on our own. In this and the next couple of episodes, we will be exploring the science of happiness, synthetic vs. natural, and how you can create a happier life for yourself in a straightforward manner. Let's start with the difference between natural happiness and synthetic happiness. Natural happiness is what we get when we get what we want or work for. It's like winning the lottery, getting a perfect parking spot, winning the race, and receiving a promotion - when we get what we want, we get a jolt of happiness. On the other hand, synthetic happiness is what we make when we don't get what we want. It is basically the glass ½ full analogy where you redefine the situation to turn the results in your favor. So, you didn't get the job you wanted, but because you didn't take it, another job came by after that made you very happy. Had you taken that first job that you wanted, you wouldn't have often gotten this one. Harvard professor and scientist Dan Gilbert gave a TED Talk in 2004 where he explained “The Surprising Science of Happiness.” In his talk, he shares stories of people who had terrible experiences but said they were happier for them. Let's take a look at a couple of them. After a scandal forced him to resign in disgrace as Speaker of the House, former Congressman Jim Wright was quoted saying: “I am so much better off, physically, financially, mentally, and in almost every way.” Another example is Pete Best, the original drummer for the Beatles. Had the rest of the band not dropped him for Ringo Starr, he believed his life would have been worse. He said, “I'm happier than I would have been with the Beatles.” You hear that, and many of us think that it's crazy, but humans have a remarkable ability to alter their views to make themselves feel better about the world they find themselves in. However, you may think, “Katie, these are incredible people, big names in history.” So, what if we looked at our own lives? Tune in tomorrow to learn how we average Joes' can do the exact same thing! Life is heavy enough, we shouldn't have to search for happiness. Teen Wolf was held and released just after Michael J. Fox exploded on to cinema with Back to the Future. It's a story we've heard before with a not so subtle twist. Are werewolves common in Nebraska? Are werewolves good at everything? or just basketball? Ever since we were kids we wanted to do a podcast about a gangster.. Goodfellas is revered as maybe the most quintessential gangster mafia spectacle since its inception. Does the Martin Scorsese staple still hold as an instant classic? Or did it mouth off too much and earn a place at the bottom, sleepin' with the fishes? You think we're funny? Say, would you like a chocolate pretzel?? Kevin Smith's second film in the View Askewniverse, Mallrats, taught us the importance of being up 12-2 in the 2nd period, the meaning of callow, and that the back of a Volkswagen is no place to make Whoopi.. or something like that. When St. Alexander Parish in Farmington Hills closed in 2014, a former parishioner resolved to carry on its legacy of service. Show notes: (0:01) Todd Lipa describes growing up at St. Alexander Parish in Farmington Hills. It's where his large family was baptized, and where his mother was buried in 1968. The parish, led by Fr. Jim Wright, was also a lifeline when the Lipa family fell on hard times, providing food, clothing and a caring support system. (2:01) When St. Alexander closed in 2014, Lipa realized he was in a perfect position to carry on the parish's legacy of service. As director of Farmington and Farmington Hills' Youth and Family Services, Lipa was well-acquainted with the needs of the community. (4:22) Despite its reputation as an affluent community, Lipa says poverty does exist in the Farmington Hills area. Together with Mayor Ken Massey and former Mayor Jerry Ellis, Lipa set out creating a new nonprofit, CARES — an acronym that stands for Community Action Resources Empowerment Services. (5:21) On July 1, 2017, the 501(c)3 purchased the former St. Alexander church for its headquarters, and began expanding its services to include groceries, hygiene and household items in a supermarket-style service center, complete with community support services such as AA and outreach coordinators to help guests secure health care, transportation and other needs. Lipa describes the incredible support CARES has received from the community, including local business owners who have donated services. (8:36) Recalling his own experience growing up in need, Lipa talks about the satisfaction he receives seeing how CARES restores the dignity of those in poverty. (10:16) Lillian, a CARES client and an immigrant from Nigeria, talks about the help she's received from CARES. In a new country without any support system, Lillian says the nonprofits volunteers “took us in like family. Taiwan, a single mother of two, discovered cares when she moved with her children to Farmington Hills. She describes her experience with gratitude. “I really, really love CARES,” she says. (13:45) CARES volunteers Carol and Michelle say Fr. Wright would be proud of how the nonprofit has carried on the mission of St. Alexander in caring for the community. (14:20) Lipa talks about his vision to expand CARES by partnering with neighborhood health care providers, as well as renovating seven acres of land into a baseball diamond “that anyone, no matter your ability, can play on.” Lipa marvels at how far CARES has come in just five short years, and expresses hope that like St. Alexander Parish, it can continue to be a beacon of Christ's love for all those in need. Newt Gingrich begins to climb the political ladder. He takes charge of GOPAC, a group that makes cassette tapes to train Republican candidates. He wants to nationalize elections, to teach Republicans nationwide to campaign with the same conservative message. And the GOP has a new ally to amplify their message, radio host Rush Limbaugh. When, in 1987, Gingrich starts to go after the Democrats' leader in the House, Jim Wright, it's with the blessing of the old guard of his party. They even reward him with the Number Two spot in GOP leadership. Gingrich doesn't stop there. In 1990, his next target is the Republican president, George H.W. Bush.

Tom Davis served seven terms in the House from Northern Virginia, including 2 cycles as NRCC Chair and as Chair of the House Government Reform Committee. In this conversation, he talks becoming obsessed with politics at an early age, working as a Senate page in the 1960s, playing a small role in the political operation of Richard Nixon, 15 years on the Fairfax County Board, 14 years in Congress, protecting the GOP majority in 2000 and 2002 while helming NRCC, why he left elected politics, the work he's most passionate about now, and his expectations ahead of the 2022 midterm elections. London called, and Formula E answered in what is being considered as being one of the best events the all-electric world championship has put on in recent years. Guest host Jack Nicholls is joined by Sam Smith and Avalanche Andretti's Roger Griffiths, who with driver Jake Dennis was the toast of the UK's capital last weekend after a dominant victory and a close second to Sunday victor Lucas di Grassi at the ExCeL centre circuit. In a packed show the trio discuss the diminishing title fight after Stoffel Vandoorne again capitalised on reliability misfortune for Mitch Evans and incident packed races for both Edoardo Mortara and Jean-Eric Vergne. There were plenty of afters too as Mercedes EQ got embroiled in an aborted choreography plan, while Sebastien Buemi and Pascal Wehrlein almost came to blows in the pit-lane and had to be separated by Griffiths' commercial director and occasional columnist of The Race, Jim Wright! In addition to the London action there is also a look ahead to Seoul and Griffiths reflections on Andretti's BMW journey which has roots stretching all the way back to the start of Formula E. “Imagine that you are the medical director of a large (>150 bed) nursing home. Two-thirds of the patients in the home now have COVID-19. Seventeen of your patients are dead. The other physicians who previously saw patients in the nursing home are no longer coming to your facility because you have COVID positive patients. You're short on gowns and facemasks. You're short on nurses and nurse aids so now you have to help deliver meals.” This was the opening paragraph that I wrote in March of 2020 when introducing a podcast we did with Dr. Jim Wright, the medical director at Canterbury Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in suburban Richmond. That was his literally his life during those spring months of 2020 and it scared the hell out of me. Lucky, Jim and many others like him were willing to come on to our podcast those first several months of the pandemic and share their experiences and lessons learned caring for COVID positive patients and their family members. On today's podcast, we look back to those early months of the pandemic and look forward to the future. We invited Jim back with us along with Darrell Owens, DNP, MSN, who is the head of palliative care for the University of Washington's Northwest campus. For those who didn't listen to our podcast with Darrell, when most of us were still trying to figure out what COVID was, he created an on call 24/7 palliative care service to have goals of care conversations with elderly patients in the emergency department under investigation for COVID, and also established an admitting inpatient palliative care service at his hospital for patients on exclusively comfort measures. What I loved about this March 2020 podcast was that Darrell pushed us to think differently: “Expect that it's not business as usual. Very first thing, you're going to have to do things differently, so be open to that. Be totally open-minded. Now the old, “We're not an admitting service or we don't do that and we don't do this,” don't start with what you don't do. Start with what you can do, what's your capacity. So take a walk down memory lane with us and hear from both Darrell and Jim where they think we are going.

As a species, we're obsessed with names. They're one of the first labels we get as kids. We name and rename absolutely everything around us. And these names carry our histories, they can open and close our eyes to the world around us, and they drag the weight of expectation and even irony along with them. His golden opportunity came in the form of a session with none other than OG Parliament vocalist Fuzzy Haskins, who had landed his own solo deal at Westbound. “Fuzzy, he gave me my first major session,” says Jay Dub, then known as Jim Wright. “He lived not too far from my mom's house.” Indeed, for young Jim, Parliament-Funkadelic had been a family affair ever since grade school, when he first got to know Bernie Worrell, George Clinton and the rest of the P-Funk camp through his big sister, vocalist Debbie Wright. Jay Dub remembers that first official session well. “Fuzzy was gonna play drums,” Dub explains, “cause normally he played drums on his stuff… I happened to be in the studio… I was like ‘Hey Fuzz. Wassup man? Can I give it a go?' Me knowin' him, he said ‘Okay Jim.'” Even so, young Wright knew full well that a chance wasn't a guarantee, as friendship and nepotism didn't get you very far when it came to laying down the funk. “You had to be quick, ‘cause money is being spent,” he explains. “You didn't get too many chances.” So Jay Dub went over to the drums and sat down, with Glenn Goins, Garry Shider, & Cordell “Boogie” Mosson holding their instruments and staring at him like: Why is Debbie's little brother in here when we're about to record? But little did they know, the Kid was ready. “They counted off, and I hit it in one take, man,” reports Jay. “Pocket. Timing. Solid. And from there I end up doing two more songs that night with ‘em. I would do a song, they would say ‘Take a break. Let us mix. We'll call you for the next one.'” Seven hours later and $400 richer, young Mr. Wright had been fully matriculated into P University. Word spread to George C about what went down. “Fuzzy gave me that shot, and from there I guess George heard it,” recalls Jay Dub. “And next thing I knew, I was called down to the studio.” Significantly, Dr. Funkenstein wound up pulling Jay Dub into a marathon session with the nimble-fingered bassist Rodney “Skeet” Curtis, recording songs that were turned into funky headwreckers which wound up on such classic records as Parlet's Pleasure Principle and Bernie Worrell's All the Woo in the World. All of this established Jay Dub's reputation as a pocket drummer, and some serious heads within the camp were starting to take notice. Yet, by the time the 1980s came along, the wind was starting to blow in a different direction. The drum machine, once a novelty, was becoming more significant in the music industry by the day, predicting a cruel fate for live drummers. A still quite young Mr. Wright saw the writing on the studio wall and decided it was time to expand his skills. Enter Don Davis, owner of United Sound and mentor to local talent. “He was great to me,” Dub remembers of Don. “Anyone that had enough confidence, he would give you a shot… He would at least throw you in the studio to do some demos.” And when Jay Dub found out producers got paid double scale, he really got inspired. So he improved his keyboard skills, grabbed the mic, and began to record his own ideas instead of someone else's. “It's a growth thing until the end, basically,” he says of his evolution toward becoming a singer/songwriter. “You're always learning. You're always trying to adjust if you choose to move forward.” As it turned out, part of moving forward was getting out of his deal with Davis in order to go independent. From there, Jim, now Jay Double, put out his own singles and LPs. He even started his own clothing line.We first met and talked to Jay Double You! for Episode 5 of Aced Out back in the fall of 2019, when we were still a struggling little podcast trying find our footing. He gave us a fascinating and fun interview that focused heavily on his P-Funk days but also featured some of his super dope solo work. But the “fun with a K” didn't stop there, not by a long shot. As it turned out, Dub not only enjoyed his moment in the spotlight, but also connected spiritually with Aced Out's mission and raison d'etre: to give props where props are due. “It's hard for musicians to give each other credit,” laments Jay Dub. “I say, ‘Genius, recognize genius.'” And we here at Aced Out know firsthand that the man practices what he preaches. Indeed, Dub recognized the opportunity to share the wealth and, with our blessing and gratitude, got on the phone to recruit some old friends for the cause. Consequently, the man has been an integral part of Aced Out's ever-expanding body of work, garnering us classic interviews with Joe “Pep” Harris of Undisputed Truth and the late Robin Russell of New Birth, as well as his fellow P-Funk alumni Rick Gardner of the Horny Horns, Steve Boyd, Andre Foxxe, and Grady Thomas. For this second appearance on Aced Out, Jay Dub traveled all the way from Suwanee, GA to join us in the Bay Area. In this intimate, in-person interview, Dub describes his transition from player to producer, explains how his subconscious guides his songwriting process, and reveals the secret to Tiki Fulwood's high-hat technique. Jay Dub also raps about why Junie Morrison loved singing over his drum tracks, learning rudiments from Tyrone Lampkin, and that time he made George Clinton bacon and eggs for breakfast. If all that weren't enough, Jay Stone & Ace Alan and a buncha Bay Area heavy hitters (listed below) help Jay Dub perform the title track to his funktastic solo joint, I'll See You Soon (2001)!Produced & Hosted by Ace AlanCohosted by Jay StoneExecutive Producer: Scott Sheppardw/ Content Produced by Jay Double You!Website, Art & Graphics by 3chardsw/ major props to Nat CollinsLive Version of “I'll See You Soon” Featuring:Jay Double You! — clavinet, vocalsFemi Andrades — vocalsVanessa Love — vocalsAlan Williams — tromboneAl Lazard — saxOcea Savage — synthKyle “Coyote” Collins — synth percussionChris McGrew — drumsJay Stone — guitarAce Alan — bassEngineered by Chris McGrew for Wally's Hyde Out @ Hyde Street Studios, San FranciscoVideo by RoAn Gibson for X Racer ProductionsWith thanks to Maryzelle UngoSound Editing, Video Editing & Graphics by Nick “WAES” Carden for Off Hand Records in OaklandTheme song “I Can Never Be” by the FUNKANAUTS from the album Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth an Issac Bradbury Production © 2022visit acedoutpodcast.com to see photos and more
