Christopher Columbus was a man of contradictions: he professed God spoke to him to direct his travels, yet after four voyages he still could not recognise that he had 'discovered' a New World.Professor Suzannah Lipscomb and biographer Laurence Bergreen discuss Columbus's four perilous voyages, his navigational genius, and the devastating impact of his monstrous acts on indigenous populations. From triumphs at sea to tragic consequences, this is a nuanced look at one of history's most debated figures.Presented by Professor Suzannah Lipscomb. Just over 500 years ago, a small band of sailors completed the first ever circumnavigation of the globe, launched by Ferdinand Magellan. Authorship of “Sister Kate,” one of the first famous songs of the Roarin' Twenties, is a musical mystery. The composer of record is New Orleans bandleader/violinist Armand Piron, who had a publishing partnership with Clarence Williams. However, Piron's credits for the song frequently have been disputed, most famously by trumpeter Louis Armstrong, who always claimed he wrote the tune himself. Armstrong contended he sold the song for an overcoat (which he received) and a few dollars (which he did not).Piron — who copyrighted it in 1919 as “I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate” (though it wasn't published till 1922) — told jazz historian Al Rose that “that's not Louis's tune or mine either. That tune is older than all of us. People always put different words to it. Some of them were too dirty to say in polite company.”For instance, the way Armstrong did the song didn't have anything to do with a sister Kate, but a lot to do with jiggling lady bits.Gotta have 'em before it's too late,They shake like jelly on a plate.Big ‘n' juicy, soft an' round,Sweetes' ones I ever found.“There's only so many places you could do a number like that,” Piron told Rose, “and not in my band.”The Skinny on The ShimmyCommenting on the song's history, bluesman/author Elijah Wald notes, “Though Piron and his band cleaned up the lyric, they kept the sense intact, since the generally accepted derivation of ‘shimmy' fits Armstrong's verse pretty well.”“The etymology isn't solid,” Wald adds, “but most authorities derive it from chemise — ‘shimmy' seems to have been American slang for a lightweight women's blouse as early as the 1840s — and the dance move was to ‘shake your shimmy' by vibrating the relevant area as rapidly as possible.”And Who Is Kate? Uh… Ask LouisSo, in Piron and Williams' telling, the song was associated with a suggestive shimmy dance move, but was there actually a “sister Kate?” And — poof! — just like that, we're back to Louis Armstrong. The trumpeter long claimed that he knew Kate before she ever shimmied. In his book Louis Armstrong, An Extravagant Life, author Laurence Bergreen said that when New Orleans trombonist Kid Ory hired Armstrong for his band, he told the youngster he should work up a number so they could feature him once in a while. Armstrong did and even created a little dance to go with it.The song was “an unashamedly filthy thing,” Bergreen wrote, called “Katie's Head,” reportedly inspired by the 1883 stabbing death of New Orleans madam Kate Townsend. This particular Kate, who ran a high-class house of prostitution on Basin Street, was murdered in a drunken quarrel with her longtime "fancy man" Troisville Sykes. Despite its dark and bloody subject matter, the song was a hit. Bergreen quoted Armstrong as saying that whenever he sang it, “Man, it was like a sporting event. All the guys crowded around, and they like to carry me up on their shoulders.” Armstrong's performance usually was accompanied by his dance, apparently a version of "The Shimmy,” which was just starting to appear around the country."One night, as I did this number,” Armstrong went on, “I saw this cat writing it all down on music paper. He was quick, man! He could write as fast as I could play and sing. When I had finished, he asked me if I'd sell the number to him. He mentioned $25. When you're only making a couple of bucks a night, that's a lot of money. But what really put the deal over was that I had just seen a hard-hitting steel gray overcoat that I really wanted for those cold nights. So I said `Okay' and he handed me some forms to sign and I signed them. He said he'd be back with the cash, but he never did come back."The stranger with the forms and the pen was Armand Piron's partner Clarence Williams, the ambitious music entrepreneur who would soon be leaving New Orleans for Chicago and then on to New York City.First RecordingsThe earliest recordings of the song were little known 1922 sides by The Original Memphis Five on Pathé Actuelle, by Mary Straine and Joseph Smith's Jazz Band on Black Swan Records and by The Virginians on Victor. A better received version was the 1923 release by vocalist Anna Jones with Fats Waller on piano.Arrangements over the years since then ranged from big band jazz to a hokum version by The Alabama Jug Band in 1934, a precursor to jug band revival and string band versions during the 1960s by Dave Van Ronk, Jim Kweskin and The Greenbriar Boys. Our Take on the TuneThe Flood has always been much enamored of those ‘60s string band renditions. Nowadays our version follows Jim Kweskin's idea on his jug band's 1966 Relax Your Mind album to combine “Sister Kate” with another Louis Armstrong standard, “Heebie Jeebies.”On this track, while everybody is on fire, bringing their own hot solos to the mix, we all agree that it is Danny — our newest Floodster — who, as Sam says, “becomes one” with Sister Kate. So, Ferdinand Magellan. Villain? Visionary? Friend? Foe? Hero? This chapter provided the unfolding timeline of Magellan's objective to “make a name for himself” like other Portugese explorers; by originally setting out to bring commerce to the Spice Islands, particularly Moluccas, as a part of the Indonesian archipelago. Most Filipinos were told that Magellan's purpose was to bring Christianity to the islands. Ate Judy cites a lot of Laurence Bergreen's Over The Edge of the World, Pigafetta, and Enrique's lenses. We learn that Magellan was born in 1480 and became part of the royal court, which allowed him access to education and resources. The bulk of this chapter tells the tales of the emerging friendship between the Filipino King, Rajah Kolambu. Tune in and let us know your own hot takes on Magellan! Now we're getting into some juicy deets! This chapter held an intertwining of details cited from an Italian supernumerary ship crew member, Antonio Pigafetta. Being a supernumerary meant Pigafetta didn't partake in shipboard responsibilities besides documenting/writing about our favorite antagonist on Ferdinand Magellan. But will we shift our thoughts on Magellan after this chapter? Thanks to Pigafetta and his famous piece, Magellan's Voyage: A Narrative Account of the First Circumnavigation, another author Laurence Bergreen, who wrote, Over the Edge of the World, was able to translate Spain's “first landings” in the Philippines. Through this translation, Bergreen took us on a journey on and off the ship and the intriguing first stages of actually peaceful, friendly, and apparently ritualistically blood bonding interactions between 2 leaders: Magellan and an unidentified Filipino King from the island of Homonhon. It is said that this location was later to be named as Aquade for its water and first signs of gold, post-colonialism. In addition, it is interesting that Philippine historian, Willian Henry Scott, teaches us that in the days of international trade, slaves were actually employed to be translators. Magellan having 2 separate Arabic and Malay speaking slaves, specifically worked with the Malay slave because Magellan was actually looking for spices that would be found in east Indonesia, but obviously ended up in the Philipines first. This soon-to-be well-known Malay slave, Enrique, seems to have quite the benevolent effect (“Enrique Effect”) because his translations cultivated what appears to be sincere trust between the filipino King and Magellan. Laurence Bergreen's book In Search of a Kingdom tells the true story of the heroics of Francis Drake and the wisdom of Elizabeth I that laid the foundations that would impact world history for centuries.
Today, I speak with Laurence Bergreen about his book In Search of a Kingdom: Francis Drake, Elizabeth I, and the Perilous Birth of the British Empire. "Before he was secretly dispatched by Queen Elizabeth to circumnavigate the globe, or was called upon to save England from the Spanish Armada, Francis Drake was perhaps the most wanted—and successful—pirate ever to sail. Nicknamed “El Draque” by the Spaniards who placed a bounty on his head, the notorious red-haired, hot-tempered Drake pillaged galleons laden with New World gold and silver, stealing a vast fortune for his queen—and himself. For Elizabeth, Drake made the impossible real, serving as a crucial and brilliantly adaptable instrument of her ambitions to transform England from a third-rate island kingdom into a global imperial power. In 1580, sailing on Elizabeth's covert orders, Drake became the first captain to circumnavigate the earth successfully. (Ferdinand Magellan had died in his attempt.) Part exploring expedition, part raiding mission, Drake's audacious around-the-world journey in the Golden Hind reached Patagonia, the Pacific Coast of present-day California and Oregon, the Spice Islands, Java, and Africa. Almost a decade later, Elizabeth called upon Drake again. As the devil-may-care vice admiral of the English fleet, Drake dramatically defeated the once-invincible Spanish Armada, spurring the British Empire's ascent and permanently wounding its greatest rival. The relationship between Drake and Elizabeth is the missing link in our understanding of the rise of the British Empire, and its importance has not been fully described or appreciated. Framed around Drake's key voyages as a window into this crucial moment in British history, In Search of a Kingdom is a rousing adventure narrative entwining epic historical themes with intimate passions." Laurence Bergreen is a historian and author of several biographies of famous explorers, including most recently, "In Search of a Kingdom: Francis Drake, Elizabeth I, and the Perilous Birth of the British Empire."
Laurence Bergreen threads the needle for me. He tells Magellan's story in a way that is exciting and moves with pace but leaving in all the 'maybes' and 'buts' that a story like this needs. His book Over the Edge of the World: Magellan's Terrifying Circumnavigation of the Globe is an absolute pleasure.
Christopher Columbus, a Genoese navigator, never knew America existed. He did not step foot in North America; until his death he believed he had reached the outskirts of China. Yet Columbus became an American hero, the story of his voyages woven into the U.S. origin story by historians in the early nineteenth century. Today, his public image may be at its lowest point since Americans began celebrating the anniversary of his first trans-Atlantic voyage. Since the summer of 2020, dozens of Columbus statues were removed by local officials in cities and towns nationwide. This anti-Columbus sentiment flowed from the massive protests against racism and police brutality that broke out after the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police. Thus, if the story of America were one of racial oppression and genocide, then it began with Columbus in 1492. His history-changing accomplishments now seem to matter little in light of his failures and faults, especially at a time of highly racialized politics and Woke culture wars. In this episode, acclaimed biographer and historian Laurence Bergreen discusses the many faces of Christopher Columbus as well as the myths, good and bad, that continue to cloud our modern understanding of his life.

Today is the second Monday in October. Since the 1930s, the day has been recognized as a federal holiday commemorating the first arrival of Christopher Columbus and crew to the Americas in 1492. Last week, the Baltimore City Council passed a bill to rename Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples Day. Mayor Jack Young has yet to sign the bill into law. If the mayor signs the bill or allows it to become law without his signature, Baltimore will join more than 130 cities and counties across nearly 35 states in creating an alternative to celebrating the life of Columbus, an explorer that Native Americans have long viewed as a brutal colonizer. What do we know about Columbus, and what should we know to be able put him in historical context? The historian and author Laurence Bergreen joins me. He has written several books about explorers, including biographies of Marco Polo, Magellan, and Christopher Columbus, the subject of his 2011 book, Columbus: the Four Voyages. Mr. Bergreen joins us on Zoom from New York… Then, Tom welcomes Ashley Minner, a local artist and a professor and folklorist at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Ms. Minner is an enrolled member of the Lumbees of North Carolina, the largest native American tribe East of the Mississippi, and the ninth largest in the country. A small community of Lumbee Indians has lived in Baltimore since the 1940s. She describes her work preserving the history of that community, and her advocacy for a heightened public awareness of the cultures of Indigenous People. She joins us on Zoom. Some upcoming events related to the Baltimore Lumbee Community and Indigenous Peoples Day are listed below: UMD Indigenous Peoples' Day Panel (requires registration): 10/12/20, 6:30 PM; Walter's Art Museum LIVE Artist's Talk: Indigenous Futures: 10/13/20, 5:30 PM; MICA Lecture - Art & The Archive: What is the Archive?: 10/19/20, 7 PM Oral History Association Annual Meeting: Virtual Walking Tour of "The Reservation": 10/22/20, 1 PM
