Hello and welcome to the Monday Breakfast show for the 17th of March 2025. On today's show: - Last Tuesday the Allan Government announced that the public housing tower in Flemington, whose residents are currently part of an ongoing class action lawsuit, will be demolished and redeveloped without any new public housing. The decision involves what the Victorian government calls the 'Ground Lease Model' whereby the land is leased to a private company who will design, build, manage and maintain the sites for forty years. Rob spoke with Flora from the Renters and Housing Union to tell us more about this shameful move from the Allan government. The interview mentions this RAHU Fundraiser for the Union's eviction fund, taking place this Saturday at Mamma Chen's from 7pm. It also mentions a Noongar-led campaign to have Sister Kate's land returned to Noongar people. You can read more about the campaign here. - We hear an excerpt of Rob's conversation with Buzz from the Covid Naarm bloc, who work to supply COVID PPE via mutual aid and community support. This interview is particularly timely considering Long Covid Awareness Day was on March 15th. Read about Long Covid here, and follow the Covid Naarm bloc here.- Hannah spoke with Amelia Dunn and Tuia Suter about their show Lost Property, to support their show go to artists.australianculturalfund.org.au and search lost property a one-woman show, or go to their instagrams @ameliardunn @tuiasuter - more upcoming shows will be coming to naarm later in the year, keep your eye out!- CW: This segment features discussion of Indigenous peoples' deaths in custody as well as naming Indigenous people who have died in custody. On Wednesday last week the Victorian Government announced it would toughen bail laws to make them the toughest in so-called Australia. Within these laws, the Allan government plans to reintroduce the offence of committing an indictable crime while on bail -- which was scrapped in 2023 following the coronial inquest into the death of Gunditjmara, Yorta Yorta, Dja Dja Wurrung and Wiradjuri woman Veronica Nelson in custody. The coronial inquest found that Victoria's bail laws were a 'complete and unmitigated disaster' that disproportionately impacted First Nations people, women and children. Maggie Munn, First Nations Justice Director at the Human Rights Law Centre and proud Gunggari advocate from south-west Queensland joined us on the show to speak about these harmful bail laws. Maggie is deeply committed to ending the mass incarceration of their people, and has spent many years as an advocate and campaigning on First Nations children, raising the minimum age of criminal responsibility, and youth justice.Tomorrow at 4:30pm there will be a snap action for Poccum's Law outside Parliament Steps, organised by Flat Out.- The show ends with a conversation with Jay Coonan, spokesperson for the Antipoverty Centre and a jobseeker recipient. Rob spoke with them about the latest report released by the Economic Inclusion Advisory Committee. The organisation is involved in this educational event providing tips on how to speak about poverty in the media ahead of the budget and the next Federal election. *This episode includes mentions of gendered medical abuse*.Last episode, we discussed the history of Sister Kate's children's home and the policy of forced removal of Aboriginal children from their families, which officially ended in the 70's and 80's, but in reality continues to this day through policing and carceral racism.Over the other side of the world, In Nunarput, or so called Greenland, the Inuit people are experiencing their own stolen generation through the continuing genocidal policies of their coloniser Denmark. The Inuit are Indigenous to several regions in the arctic including Nunarput, northern areas of Turtle Island and Chukotka north of Russia. Nunarput was formally colonised by the kingdom of Denmark and Norway in 1721, it was transferred to Danish rule when the kingdom separated in 1814. Nunarput officially ended its status as a colony of Denmark in 1953, and gained ‘home rule' in 1979 and a referendum in 2009 gave the island ‘self government'. However foreign policy, defense and security are still controlled by Denmark, and the government of Nunarput is still largely made up of Danish settlers. In this episode Mell speaks to Michael Bro, an Inuit and 2SLGBTQIA+ advocate who has been outspoken on issues concerning the rights of Inuit people across the arctic as well as his homeland of Nunarput. If you want to know more about Inuit struggles, follow Michael on instagram @michaelsevvv and check out the resources on his linktree.Check out the film ‘Orsugiak - Greenland's White Gold', a documentary by Inuit about the exploitation of Nunarput resources. - Link incoming* gofundme campaign to help bring Inuit kids back to their parents* Petition to bring Keira Kronvold's baby homeThis episode was made on Wurundjeri land, this land was invaded, stolen and remains under occupation. Just a warning that today's episode includes (non-descriptive) mentions of the physical and sexual abuse of children as well as mentions of historically used racist language. This week, we're looking at a campaign for the return of stolen Whadjuk Noongar land, in the colonial city of perth, western australia. One of the most brutal genocidal strategies carried out by colonial governments resulted in the stolen generations. From the mid 1800s, a series of policies throughout the states and territories allowed for Aboriginal children to be removed from their families and put into state care or adopted to white families. Aside from being separated permanently from family and community, these children were frequently forced into hard labour, abused and even murdered. The policy of child removal was not officially ended until the 1970's, and continued into the 1980's in the colonial state of queensland. The forced removal of Aboriginal children from their families continues today through policing and carceral racism.Under a 1905 act in colonial western australia, A.O Neville, the so-called ‘chief protector of aborigines' was made the legal guardian of all Aboriginal children and embarked on a campaign to abduct children with lighter skin and raise them under European servitude, with the aim to breed out Aboriginality. In 1933, during Neville's eugenics program, an anglican nun known as Sister Kate set up a home for ‘light skinned' Aboriginal children in the outskirts of colonial perth. Contact with family was forbidden and the children were encouraged to believe they were white. In 1953 Sister Kate's home was taken over by the Uniting Church and conditions rapidly deteriorated for the children, who suffered horrific psychological, physical and sexual abuse, forced labour and neglect for decades.Following a national inquiry into the stolen generations in 1997, known as the ‘Bringing Them Home' report, the Uniting Church committed to help repair the damage that they had caused to the children and their families. Recommendation 41 of the Bringing Them Home Report states that churches should ‘review their land holdings to identify land acquired or granted for the purpose of accommodating Indigenous children forcibly removed from their families and in consultation with Indigenous people and their land councils, return that land'In 2007 an agreement between the Uniting Church Australia and the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress led to the establishment of the Beananging Kwuurt Institute, a social space to provide support for Aboriginal people on the former site of Sister Kate's.In December last year the Uniting Church shut down the centre and are attempting to take the land away from Noongar people again. Barkandji woman Bev Burns believes the church will sell the site to developers in order to pay the redress bill for past abuse.Bev was asked by the Noongar elders to speak for this interview, as some of them have faced threats and wish to remain anonymous. If you want to learn more about the Occupy Sister Kate's campaign: You can follow Land Back for Stolen Generations on Instagram. Stephanie Beacham is without a doubt one of Britain's most talented, beautiful and well-known actresses. Despite becoming world famous and an icon of the 1980s due to her role as Sable Colby in the American soap operas Dynasty and The Colbys and going on to have starring roles in shows such as Sister Kate, Seaquest DSV, Beverly Hills 90210, and Bad Girls, Stephanie Beacham had already carved a solid acting career back in her home country. Born in Hertfordshire in southern England, one of the four children of an insurance executive and a housewife, Beacham began an interest in acting at a young age and studied mime at the respected and renowned school of Étienne Decroux in Paris before completing her studies at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. Guest roles on British television followed in the late 1960s such as The Saint and UFO, however Beacham's breakthrough was her starring role opposite Marlon Brando in the cult horror film The Nightcomers that brought her critical acclaim and widespread attention. She became a regular staple in British horror films for the remainder of the 1970s and early 1980s such as Dracula A.D. 1972, House of Mortal Sin, Schizo and Inseminoid, however she was still a commonly seen face on television, such as being given her own soap opera in Marked Personal as well as regular modelling work. It was in the 1980s however that Beacham's career became supercharged. She had starring roles in the acclaimed television series Tenko and Connie, the latter gaining particular interest in the US.Beacham moved to Hollywood in the mid-1980s and was given the role of Sable Colby in the ABC soap opera The Colbys, and then joined it's parent show Dynasty where she remained until the show's cancellation. Both shows made Beacham a household name on both sides of the Atlantic as the glamour-puss wife of Charlton Heston's character Jason and cousin of Joan Collins' Alexis, with the two regularly involved in a 'battle of the bitches' scenario. Following the cancellation of Dynasty, Beacham headlined the sitcom Sister Kate for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award, before going on to have main roles in Beverly Hills, 90210 as Iris McKay, Steven Spielberg's Seaquest DSV as Dr. Kristen Westphalen and Countess Bartholomew in Star Trek: The Next Generation as well as film roles opposite Christopher Plummer in Secrets and Anthony Hopkins in To Be The Best. Beacham maintained a regular presence on television and in theatre both in the US and the UK for the remainder of the 1990s until she played Phyllida Oswyn in the prison series Bad Girls, a role she would play until the show's end in 2006. She would later have parts in films such as Love and Other Disasters, Moving Target and Wild Oats and played Martha Fraser in Coronation Street. Her theatre credits are extensive and include roles in the West End and on Broadway. Most recently she completed UK tours as Judith Bliss in Hay Fever and Maria Callas in Masterclass. It is the role of Mrs Cheveley in Oscar Wilde's An Ideal Husband in 1998 that brought her to Australia and it is this production which reunites us both after a couple of decades to reminisce and catch up.The STAGES podcast is available to access and subscribe from Spotify and Apple podcasts. Jam Logs, the Podcast of The 1937 Flood

The Flood's take on this century-old happy, naughty good-time tune of the Roarin' Twenties owes much to the song's re-arousal by the string bands of the 1960s. Our version borrows the great Jim Kweskin jug band's idea of blending the tunes with the Louis Armstrong standard of the same era, “Heebie Jeebies.” And in this track, while everybody brings great solos, we all agree that it's Danny — our newest Floodster — who, as Sam says, “becomes one with Sister Kate.”

The 1937 Flood Watch Podcast

Authorship of “Sister Kate,” one of the first famous songs of the Roarin' Twenties, is a musical mystery. The composer of record is New Orleans bandleader/violinist Armand Piron, who had a publishing partnership with Clarence Williams. However, Piron's credits for the song frequently have been disputed, most famously by trumpeter Louis Armstrong, who always claimed he wrote the tune himself. Armstrong contended he sold the song for an overcoat (which he received) and a few dollars (which he did not).Piron — who copyrighted it in 1919 as “I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate” (though it wasn't published till 1922) — told jazz historian Al Rose that “that's not Louis's tune or mine either. That tune is older than all of us. People always put different words to it. Some of them were too dirty to say in polite company.”For instance, the way Armstrong did the song didn't have anything to do with a sister Kate, but a lot to do with jiggling lady bits.Gotta have 'em before it's too late,They shake like jelly on a plate.Big ‘n' juicy, soft an' round,Sweetes' ones I ever found.“There's only so many places you could do a number like that,” Piron told Rose, “and not in my band.”The Skinny on The ShimmyCommenting on the song's history, bluesman/author Elijah Wald notes, “Though Piron and his band cleaned up the lyric, they kept the sense intact, since the generally accepted derivation of ‘shimmy' fits Armstrong's verse pretty well.”“The etymology isn't solid,” Wald adds, “but most authorities derive it from chemise — ‘shimmy' seems to have been American slang for a lightweight women's blouse as early as the 1840s — and the dance move was to ‘shake your shimmy' by vibrating the relevant area as rapidly as possible.”And Who Is Kate? Uh… Ask LouisSo, in Piron and Williams' telling, the song was associated with a suggestive shimmy dance move, but was there actually a “sister Kate?” And — poof! — just like that, we're back to Louis Armstrong. The trumpeter long claimed that he knew Kate before she ever shimmied. In his book Louis Armstrong, An Extravagant Life, author Laurence Bergreen said that when New Orleans trombonist Kid Ory hired Armstrong for his band, he told the youngster he should work up a number so they could feature him once in a while. Armstrong did and even created a little dance to go with it.The song was “an unashamedly filthy thing,” Bergreen wrote, called “Katie's Head,” reportedly inspired by the 1883 stabbing death of New Orleans madam Kate Townsend. This particular Kate, who ran a high-class house of prostitution on Basin Street, was murdered in a drunken quarrel with her longtime "fancy man" Troisville Sykes. Despite its dark and bloody subject matter, the song was a hit. Bergreen quoted Armstrong as saying that whenever he sang it, “Man, it was like a sporting event. All the guys crowded around, and they like to carry me up on their shoulders.” Armstrong's performance usually was accompanied by his dance, apparently a version of "The Shimmy,” which was just starting to appear around the country."One night, as I did this number,” Armstrong went on, “I saw this cat writing it all down on music paper. He was quick, man! He could write as fast as I could play and sing. When I had finished, he asked me if I'd sell the number to him. He mentioned $25. When you're only making a couple of bucks a night, that's a lot of money. But what really put the deal over was that I had just seen a hard-hitting steel gray overcoat that I really wanted for those cold nights. So I said `Okay' and he handed me some forms to sign and I signed them. He said he'd be back with the cash, but he never did come back."The stranger with the forms and the pen was Armand Piron's partner Clarence Williams, the ambitious music entrepreneur who would soon be leaving New Orleans for Chicago and then on to New York City.First RecordingsThe earliest recordings of the song were little known 1922 sides by The Original Memphis Five on Pathé Actuelle, by Mary Straine and Joseph Smith's Jazz Band on Black Swan Records and by The Virginians on Victor. A better received version was the 1923 release by vocalist Anna Jones with Fats Waller on piano.Arrangements over the years since then ranged from big band jazz to a hokum version by The Alabama Jug Band in 1934, a precursor to jug band revival and string band versions during the 1960s by Dave Van Ronk, Jim Kweskin and The Greenbriar Boys. Our Take on the TuneThe Flood has always been much enamored of those ‘60s string band renditions. Nowadays our version follows Jim Kweskin's idea on his jug band's 1966 Relax Your Mind album to combine “Sister Kate” with another Louis Armstrong standard, “Heebie Jeebies.”On this track, while everybody is on fire, bringing their own hot solos to the mix, we all agree that it is Danny — our newest Floodster — who, as Sam says, “becomes one” with Sister Kate. Welcome to The Barrier Breakdown: Disrupting Mental Health! This week our guest is Sister Kate, founder of a non-profit cannabis collective that opened for business in 2010. There, she served cannabidiol medicine to local terminal patients, and during that time, she developed a line of teas, tinctures and salves for patients to experience its healing effects without needing to smoke it. After four years of running the collective, Sister Kate began working exclusively with hemp and saw the need to share this safe, non-addictive and non-psychoactive formulation of the medicine with more people who needed it. She closed the collective in 2014, and in January of 2015 the Sisters of the Valley opened for business. You'll need some background here. In the 1940s, Doug grew up listening to — and then playing — string band music with his mom and her banjo-picking sister. Years later when he was all grown, Doug bought his mom the best guitar she'd ever play, a big, beautiful Gibson Dove, a study of love in maple, mahogany and rosewood. Well, we've not seen that guitar — it's been in its case for decades — but at its coming out party last night it jumped right into the mix. Just listen to it shimmy on this jive tune from about a hundred years ago.

Phil & Jake are joined by old friend (and fellow Pomolita Junior High School survivor) Sarah Walsh to rank the 1983 movie Flashdance, middle school, and sandwiches on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: We chat briefly about the 90s sitcom Sister, Sister, which leads to Phil wonder if there was a TV adaptation of the movie Sister Act, but he was probably thinking of Sister Kate. Nuns used to be much more common in popular culture; there are fewer than one-third as many in America now than there were in the 1960s. We discuss depictions of breakdancing in popular culture, including the 1984 movie Breakin', which is perhaps what Phil was thinking of when talking about the theme of street dance vs. classical dance. We also mention the sequel Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo, which came out later in the same year. Micheal Jackson moonwalking at the Grammys happened in 1983 (the year Flashdance came out). The song “What a Feeling” by Irene Cara was  produced by Father of Disco Giorgio Moroder. The music video for the song perfectly demonstrates the marriage of MTV and Hollywood in the 80s; see also “When Doves Cry” by Prince (from Purple Rain), “Footloose”, and pretty much any movie from the era produced by Don Simpson & Jerry Bruckheimer. Phil wonders if no-nudity strip clubs were really a common thing in the 80s, or if they only existed in movies like Flashdance and Tango & Cash.  In Queens in the early 2000s there was a place like that  under the N Train in Astoria.  Dames is a 1934 movie that has some really amazing dance sequences but it's mostly done with editing. Phil notes that the music video for “Papa Don't Preach” by Madonna is similar in imagery and overall style style to Flashdance. Could Madonna have played the lead in the film? In the climax of the movie Akeela and the Bee you don't see her spell out the final word “pulchritude" but you see the people in her life, including Angela Basset, Curtis Armstrong and Laurence Fishburne spell the word out. It's great. Phil wanted something like that at the end of Flashdance. Sister Kate found her true calling when she learned to organize her life to be in tune with the moon, and she works every day with her community at the Sisters of the Valley in California where they put their beliefs into practice of putting Mother Earth first and second and serving the cannabis plant and producing some wonderful products for our health and wellness. In a recent show review, The Huffington Post said, "Her heart ignites a sea of beauty expressed in a myriad of harmony, rhythm and passion.   Musically, she is seamless. She effortlessly and brilliantly flies through a wide swath of styles, from blues to country to ballad to gospel and beyond." Kate fronted her own rock band at fifteen, and by nineteen had signed her first recording contract with Atlantic/Cotillion under the tutelage of her manager, legendary producer Peter Asher. That album, "Sister Kate," produced her first charting hit, a cover of Elton John's "Country Comfort," recorded with his encouragement and blessing.   She later recorded two albums for Columbia Records, "Kate Taylor," produced by her brother James Taylor and "It's in There," produced by acclaimed Muscle Shoals/Nashville producer Barry Beckett. Her duet with James, "The Shoop Shoop Song," from "Kate Taylor," became her next charting hit single and remains an audience favorite today. Kate's 2002 release, Beautiful Road, received 3 stars from Rolling Stone, who dubbed it a "heartfelt folk-rock gem." And her 2009 release, Fair Time!, her first of all original compositions, debuted to critical acclaim nationwide. A production of WCWP Studios - LIU Post Public Radio. Visit us at WCWP.org

On today’s episode, my sister Kate makes her debut to introduce the Sister Series, as well as to reminisce. Check out today’s post on what I’ve learned from my sister over the years. Questions? Sister Kate came to California after surviving a financially devastating divorce, and as a single mother of three children, found it impractical to continue her chosen career, as the amount of travel would have meant the children raised themselves. Instead, she looked to California’s most new and most interesting de-regulating market: the cannabis industry. Sister Kate founded a non-profit cannabis collective in the Fall of 2009 and opened for business in 2010 (Caregrowers). After three years of serving local terminal patients, after developing teas and tinctures for the express reason of avoiding having the sick and dying risk torching themselves with fire and pipes, she decided to close that business and focused on developing a non-smokable product line that would reach more people. During the Harvest Moon of 2014, she developed her first line of products for the Sisters of the Valley. In January of 2015, she launched the business and the Sisters support themselves through the growing business of making and distributing CBD products. Sister Kate has been called the "Weed Nun", "Cannabis Nun", and she and her order has been featured globally for their growing efforts and mission. In light of CBD taking taken off the WADA banned list as of January 1, 2018, and at the same time current political and cultural movements on both ends, it seemed Sister Kate would be an interesting guest to talk about what CBD is and what it isn't.
