Hello there. I can not believe we are wrapping up 2023 here on Industry Night. So for the whole month of December I have been taping this show at WREN in the Watermark Hotel. Last week we were up in one of the terrific suites and today we are here in the bar of the Japanese izakaya, Wren. Chef Yo Matsuzaki draws upon locally-grown ingredients and serves Japanese street food with modern American elements. Think shucked oysters and expertly-cut sashimi and wagyu steak and you get where I am going. But I don't need to tell you all about it! Chef is joining me today to fill you in and later in the show, I am very excited because two of the DC Area's most trusted food journalists, Washingtonian's Jessica Sidman and Anna Spiegel of Axios! Summary/AbstractDr. Jim welcomes Hamid Bangura to the show to discuss the importance of access to opportunity being the true foundation for success, rather than talent alone. They discuss how it is important to not confuse what makes sense with what drives one to make a difference, as well as why one cannot KPI their way to success if their product is people. Hamid reveals that he has been an independent contributor as a technical recruiter, covering a wide range of skill sets primarily on the IT side, ranging from engineering to executive recruiting. Hamid is a recruitment manager who has been in the staffing and recruiting industry for years. He has worked in management, director and national roles, and has traveled to other countries such as India to help build branches there. His current role is working for Amazon AWS, where he deals with high-level software engineers and software development managers. He is also responsible for offers and interacting with the business. Hamid immigrated to the United States from Sierra Leone when he was young, with his parents, in search of opportunity. They settled in a small town in Central Illinois.Hamid Bangura's parents made the decision to immigrate to the United States from Sierra Leone. In Sierra Leone, the quality of education and access to basic necessities like consistent power had been declining, making life there increasingly difficult. Therefore, they decided that the US would offer a better future for their family. He and Dr. Jim also discussed the similarities of their immigration stories, as both of them immigrated at a young age from their respective countries. Hamid shares his experience of life in Sierra Leone during the civil war. Hamid's family were still living there at the time and they relied on short wave radio for news. The war lasted 11 years, had a devastating effect on people, and the family tried to help in whatever way they could. Hamid only returned to Sierra Leone in 2017, and saw first-hand the extreme poverty and lack of resources. He also saw that people were still enjoying life and being resilient despite the difficult circumstances. He noted that there is no middle class, only those with money and those who struggle, and that the open-air markets are selling mostly goods from Asia. Lastly, he pointed out that many people lack access to clean water and food, making life even more difficult.Timestamps00:01:54Conversation with Hamid Bangura: A Journey from Sierra Leone to Amazon AWS00:06:11Heading: A Day in the Life of a Sierra Leoni During Civil War Conflict00:09:17Conversation on the Impact of Civil War and Underdevelopment in Sierra Leone00:15:14From the DC Area to Charleston, Illinois00:18:29 Navigating Cultural Identity in Central Illinois00:25:31Conversation on Immigrant Experiences and Educational Achievement00:30:00 Career Paths and Human Capital Management00:36:00Adjusting to a Career in Staffing00:39:17 Reconciling Metrics and People in the Staffing Industry00:40:49"The Benefits of Focusing on Outcomes in Staffing"00:44:00 Achieving Success in the Staffing IndustryMusic Credit: Music Credit: Maarten Schellekens - Riviera Follow us at: www.cascadingleadership.comlinkedin.com/in/drjimklinkedin.com/in/1lawrenceobrown

Hey girl hey! We are back with another episode. C'mon consistency! Welcome to episode 6 in the Healing Through Hospitality series: Break Bread.Tennille and I get into cooking, comfort, community, and the power of meaningful connection over food. As always, we chatted about what we're loving. Tennille's favorite thing this week is The Pivot Podcast on YouTube. And mine is probably the same as yours if you live anywhere around the DC Area! We mention some of our favorite acts of service that involve food, and one of mine is sending a good ole care package from Spoonful of Comfort. One thing about me, Imma send some soup! Also, over the course of our conversation we liken food to a soundtrack of our lives, as certain foods elicit certain emotions -- does anyone else remember listening to The Nutty Professor soundtrack. Just me? What about PB&Js -- do y'all still eat those? What memories do they conjure to, if any? Oh, and we do some free plugs as always! Be sure to check out Tennille's podcast - okay?! And our girl, Katryce -- The Funny Momma's -- cookbook: Sear. Whip. Sizzle. We share a few more favorite cookbooks:A Whole New You - Tia Mowry The Lazy Genius Kitchen - Kendra AdachiThanks for listening! And be sure to share with a friend. Until next time! November 5, 2021, a football rivalry renews, Gonzaga will play St. John’s for the 100th time under the lights of the recently upgraded Buchanan Field. “Go, Gonzaga, Beat St. Johns!” For decades students exhibited their purple-pride and school spirit with banners scattered around the DC Area... hung from overpasses, bridges, and other strategic places, exhorting the Eagles to Fly High! In 1957, a few intrepid students raised Gonzaga’s profile by hanging a “Beat St. John’s” banner out of two of the open windows of the Washington Monument. For members of the class of ’67, who arrived on Eye Street in 1963, these public displays of Gonzaga pride were part of the lore of Gonzaga versus St. Johns. The 1966 Gonzaga Football team was off to a great start, and the Booster Club seniors knew they had to do something big for the St. John's game. But how do you top the Monument stunt of 1957? Best friends, Jim Nelson '67 and Will Morris '67 share their memories. Will was the senior quarterback, while Jim headed up the Boosters Club. This is the story of the Capitol Banner Caper: the clever planning, the disappointment after getting caught, the unexpected next day triumph, and the hilarious punishment, it's all here. Next week in Episode 9 - more GGBSJ fun is on the way. We'll cover how in 1969, the class of '71 upstaged the seniors by turning the Monument Purple and White.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
