Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: The passing of Sebastian Lodemann, published by ClaireB on November 23, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. With immense sadness, we want to let the community know about the passing of Sebastian Lodemann, who lost his life on November 9th, 2023, in a completely unexpected and sudden accident. Those who have met him know how humble and kind he was, in addition to being a brilliant and energetic person full of light. Sebastian was deeply altruistic, curious, and took seriously both the challenges facing our world, and its potential. He loved connecting with humans from across the globe and supporting as many people as he could, so there will be a wide international community of people who will keenly feel his absence. Sebastian has been involved with EA since 2016, working on a wide range of projects in AI governance and strategy, pandemic prevention, civilisational resilience and career advising, and taking the Giving What We Can pledge. We extend our deepest sympathies to Sebastian's wife, his children, his parents and the rest of their family during this incredibly difficult time. We stand with them in mourning and in honoring the memory of a wonderful person who was taken from us far too soon. Sebastian's funeral ceremony took place on November 18th. Here are some steps you can take to commemorate Sebastian: You can make a donation to Sebastian's wife and children here (in euros) or here (in USD or in CAD). For other currencies, you can contact us as commemoratesebastian@gmail.com* If you would like to be invited to a virtual gathering in memory of Sebastian, please complete this short form or email commemoratesebastian@gmail.com To share memories of Sebastian for his family and his young children to know who their father was and how he was a force for good in the world in ways they might not otherwise get to learn, you can use this link, or share your thoughts in the comments. A late surprise guest arrives at the party, but oh so welcome – and with a sonic sting in the tail. Yes, it's time for that bonus remix we promised on the epic ‘Closer to Closure'. It's a label debut, from a firm favourite at Selador HQ, why, ‘tis only one of Germany's finest, Andre Lodemann! We've been working to get Andre on the label for longer than we care to remember, but both parties agreed it needed to be the right project – and here it is. Carlos Barbero and Dom Fricot are the lucky recipients of the Lodemann magic. Emotionally-charged and always atmospheric, Andre hits the dancefloor sweet spot with this driving yet intricate interpretation that is the perfect bed for the impassioned vocal, and has had the likes of Undercatt, Fur Coat and Marco Resmann getting all excited. Building to a finale that will have your goosebumps and spine tingles neck and neck in a race to the dancefloor, this is not to be missed. Team Selador – we wanna get Lodemann, and we wanna have a good time, and that's what we're gonna do, we're gonna get Lodemann, we're gonna have a party

Reports from Mexico are equivocal in their expression, but not in their message: for those who went to this year's Mi Casa Holiday it's "Wow!", and for those who didn't it's "I won't miss it next year!" Earlier this month, a considerable contingent of the house music world descended on Mexico's bohemian Playa del Carmen, situated on the Yucatan Peninsula surrounded by Mayan ruins, palm trees, and breathtaking beaches.  The annual event is 4 days of activities designed to bring this community of like-minded people together in a unique way and to build within it a strong bond that continues long after the party is over.   This year, creator Julius the Mad Thinker, his sister Jennifer Hurst and co-organizer Keith Evans teamed up with innumerable Global Soul industry names to make the fourth season finale the best one ever. These include Wepa's Joanne Jimenez and Antonio Ocasio, Osunlade, Master Kev, David Sabat, United Music's Hallex M and Abel Rogers, Dive's DJ ALA and Mikeytown, Alex Callejo, Uhuru Africa's Adam Gibbons, Lady Alma, Ramon Rawsoul, Lego, AQBT and many many more. Here's what some had to say:  "Best weekend of my life!" Master Kev "Words can not express how unique and fun this trip was" Househead "I let out tears of joy" Deborah Conton "Yes indeed PARADISE!" Sabine Blazin Julius's thinking pays off. He chills with fellow Chicagoan Alex Callejo... and sports his Chihuahua T-Shirt. Niiice   Unfortunately, we could not make this year's Mi Casa (although we tried) but we join the chorus of all those who did not go in saying "we won't miss next year's!" It is now our goal and objective.  And to do our part from this side of the Pacific to spread the love, we're featuring this week one of our all time favorite Julius the Mad Thinker mixes titled "Don't Be Afraid".  Here's the tracklist: 1. George Levin - Late Discovery  2. Shannon Harris - ATEM RA  3. Pirahnahead Feat. Diviniti - Believe In Me  4. Reel People - It Will Be (Ezel & Kyoto Jazz Massive Mix)  5. Omar - Lay it Down (Andre Lodemann Remix)  6. Joey Negro pres. Akabu - Another World (Andre Lodemann mix)  7. Manoo - Kodjo  8. Groovement Soul Podcast No.14 is Leftside Wobble's live set from our monthly residency in The Grand Social on the 29th September 2012. Check the grooves that rocked the party on the night. INTERVIEWQuestions by Colin Leopold Q: Where is your favourite place to (a) have a beer (b) have a dance (c) eat dinner? A: Not that I'm swerving the question but in all three cases it's anywhere where the company is great. Q: Do you think there are less boundaries between soulful music in 2012? A: If anything, I think over time dance music has become even more controlled by ever more micro genres. In the 80s before the advent of house music, the better clubs weren't afraid to book DJ's that played diverse music that crossed genre boundaries. New York DJ's such as Mark Kamins, John 'Jellybean' Benitez, Arthur Baker and Francois K were so good at putting together diverse sets that fused multiple musical influences together. Those DJ's have probably been my biggest influence. Q: What advice would you give to best join the dots in a DJ set?A: For me, it's about being in tune with the crowd and not being afraid to play with the mood and energy of the room through the music you're playing. Q: What DJs do you listen to? A: As many as I can. Monday's generally involve me booting up the iPlayer to listen to Giles Petersens show but I also ensure I download mixes from my favourite club DJ's. People like Chris Duckenfield, Gerd Jensen and Move D. Q: You worked a lot with Dazed and Confused magazine in the 90s, what magazine do you read these days and if you could set up your own non-music magazine what would it cover and what would it be called?A: Most of my reading habits have moved to digital media formats these days, but I still keep an eye on what's happening in print publishing via a great blog called Magculture. It specialises in finding those really interesting micro publishing titles that cross the boundaries between culture, fashion and music. From a digital sperspective though, I'm really excited by tablets as a magazine format. There's a really great iPad magazine called Letter To Jane the reminds me very much of the early days of Dazed & Confused in the way that it does really original stuff with it's publishing medium. In the same way that Dazed made you think differently about print media, Letter To Jane does the same with interactive media. Not that I've got any ambition to set up my own magazine, but if I did it would definitely be something for digital tablets. As for a name, Jefferson Hack got there first when he named his Dazed & Confused spin-off Another Magazine. Q: Where do you find your new music? Name your hottest recent discovery or 'one to watch'? A: Soundcloud has obviously become a very important source of music discovery for me in recent years as I love the direct contact with artists it provides which isn't coloured by the opinions of others such as music journalists or record store employees. I obviously don't rely solely on Soundcloud for music discovery, but I just try to ensure my ears/eyes are always open, whatever the source – radio, social media, email newsletters, promos etc. The most exciting band I've discovered this year is a band called Public Service Broadcasting – so hard to describe but in a strange way they remind me of Lemonjelly. Search out a track of theirs called Spitfire on YouTube and you'll get what I mean, the visuals are such an integral part of their music. Q: You did an edit of The Beatles' Tomorrow Never Knows. Who's your favourite Beatle and why? | A: That's a really hard one as it constantly flips between John Lennon and George Harrison. At the moment it's George but probably only because I recently bought the Martin Scorsese documentary about his life 'Living In The Material World'. I've just been asked to DJ at an evening to launch the DVD/Blue Ray release of The Beatles 'Magical Mystery Tour' movie so my opinion will probably change again after I've been exposed to the psychedelic joys that evening brings! Q: What's the last country you visited to DJ and what was your best, and worst memory of it? A: I've just got back from Barcelona, where I was DJing for a night called Playtime. It was at a brand new venue on the Ramblas which if I'm to be totally honest, I had grave reservations about seeing as the Ramblas is in the centre of Barcelonas tourist district. But it was a fantastic little club with the best small club sound system I've come across outside of London's Plastic People. My favourite memory of the weekend was meeting so many friends that I've made over the last few years through things like Soundcloud. It's a beautifully strange sensation when you feel you know somebody pretty well but you're only meeting them face to face for the first time. The worst part of the weekend was arriving back at my hotel for a quick kip 15 minutes before check-out and finding out that my room was already booked by somebody else so I had no way of bribing the staff into allowing me an extra couple of hours in the room! Q: Did you go to Notting Hill Carnival this year? How was it and what are your top three essentials to bring to make it a good Carnival? A: Notting Hill Carnival is one of my highlights of the year and I'm lucky enough to DJ on what for me is Carnivals best sound system – Sancho Panza. I also run an after party with the Sancho crew on the Sunday night. As for three essentials, 1.) A smile 2.) Your dancing feet 3.) Some form of carnival guilty pleasure – pick your own!

For our fifth podcast of our series we have a Deep house & Techno mix from Best Works boss Andre Lodemann. The mix is an hour of soothing deepness, that will most definitely get you in the mood for Andre's Leeds appearance when he comes to play for us in January and make his city debut. ENJOY! **INTERVIEW WITH ANDRE LODEMANN** BSU > Hi Andre, how are you? I am ready for a holiday as I had a lot of work to do both creative and administrative preparing my album "Fragments" on Best Works Records which is to be released in may 2012. BSU > You have a number of projects constantly on the go, such as running the Best Works label and producing solo material... how did you first get involved in the industry? If I am honest I started my career playing trance records in the early 90ies :) and then moving on to hip hop and finally house... BSU > What is your most memorable experience of your career so far? My most memorable moment was 1995 buying records in London. the stores in London had a totally different music selection compared to the stores in Berlin. The day I came back from London I played all the fresh tunes on a party in Frankfurt/Oder and the crowd went mad. The tune of the night was "Everybody be somebody" from Ruffneck. BSU > What inspires you? Everything that touches me in my life from bad weather to very personal emotions. BSU > In your mind, is there one album that you feel everyone should listen to at some point in their life and what is it? Kate Bush "Kick Inside", Radiohead "In Rainbows", Massive Attack "Protection", Talk Talk "Laughing Stock", Joni Mitchel "Both Sides Now",... BSU > Butter Side Up prides itself on its eclectic taste in music, what can we expect from your set on Friday? A journey from deephouse to techhouse and back with a touch of disco. BSU> Who are you looking up to at the moment? Can you tell us something about you that not many people know? I like to keep certain things private :) BSU > What can we expect from you in the future? As above mentioned my album incl. a double cd and two 12"es and of course a few new eps and remixes. Thanks Andre, see you on the 13th!

Here at Groovement Soul HQ we are delighted to have the talented Andre Lodemann laying down an exclusive guest mix to kick off our new podcast show. On Saturday 23rd of April Groovement Soul will be back in the basement of the Twisted Pepper & will be joined by a very special guest and one of the most exciting DJ's/Producers on the House scene at the moment - Mr Andre Lodemann (Best Works - Berlin). Andre's work really caught our attention in 2010 with his absolute classic remix of Omar's - Lay it Down and we've been paying close attention ever since! With his unmistakable trademark Deep Electronic Groove's, it's right up Groovement Souls street and we can not wait for him to bring it to the basement of the Twisted Pepper on April 23rd. Exclusive GS Interview with AndreQuestions by Colin Leopold and Keith DaltonQ: You've lived in Berlin for x amount of years, working and having fun. If I had 24 hours in the city, how would you recommend I spend it?A: A lot of  people who come to Berlin are here to party. Of course Berlin boasts great clubs such as Weekend, Watergate, Berghain, etc. but Berlin also has other great sites to see. I love the canals and parks in Berlin. You can take a boat through the whole city and you can play soccer in the beautiful parks here. I also like to check second hand records stores and look for things that inspire me. For the evenings programming there are great bars and restaurants to visit in different areas in the city such as Friedrichshain, were I live. Q: With people less willing to pay for music and a lot more people making it, do you think it's harder to make a living from it? What's the worst job you've had to do to support your music career? A: For me things have been different. I have been djing over 20 years now and always had a regular job as a socialworker taking care of juveniles. It was a fullfilling job that I loved. But due to my passion for music I decided to quit the job 2 years ago to concentrate myself 100% on music production and dejaying. And since I quit I have been very lucky to be able to live from my music. I feel gratefull to have this possibility. Q: What's your favourite city or club to have played in recently and why?A: I actually had a great gig in Essen, Germany a few weeks ago. I played over 5 hours and the crowd was to my surprise very open to deep music and the trip I took them on. Clubwise I also really enjoyed Prater Sauna in Vienna and Bob Beaman in Munich. I look forward to playing Trouw in Amsterdam soon as I heard great things about it. Q: A lot of countries and scenes have put their own spin on house music in the last few years, what do you think makes it such a rich source of inspiration for DJs and producers?A: House music is open to all kinds of influences. It is a universal language that everyone can speak in their own dialect.

Q: Do all the records you play when you are djing have to have an element of soul in them.A: Of course. Q: What type of house music do you think we will be listening to in 2020?A: I can’t really tell you what is going to happen . At least my vision and hope would be that house music receives more muscial richness leaving the tool-approach behind. Q: Who would you love to collaborate with from any scene or genre?A: I would love to work with Mark Hollis of Talk Talk. And also Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays. Q: Are you quite an ambitious person - what's your main goal or goals for 2011?A: I am ambitious but honestly my goal for 2011 is to reduce my work and enjoy daily life more. Q: Have you been to Dublin before? What are you expecting from Groovement Soul on the night? Any treats in store etc?
A: From dj friends I hear that Dublin and Ireland love House-Music. I expect a cool crowd. As to treats I just finished a few remixes and new tracks (Freerange, Room with A View) that I intend to play in my set. Q: Who's going to be big in 2011 apart from you obviously?A: Steffi. Ladies and gents, happy new year! A belated offering from me, as I meant to release this mix at the end of 2010. More vocals in this one than is normally the case with me, but vocals makes the ladies ... well, dare i say? :) I will say though that those fascinated by 007 (James Bond) should delight in the very last song, an Andre Lodemann twist up of Joey Negro's twist up of a Bond theme song (which Negro entitles "Another World" under the guise of Akabu), which I think was taken from the countdown in Moonraker, though I'll have to verify. This is sure to have you doing your jumping jacks or whatever passes for dancing. Enjoy! :) More to come in 2011!

This one is a one take, no edits, no mastering mix. Conceptually, the idea was to keep things kind of groovy and sophisticated. At the same time, I wanted to reach for that part of my repertoire of sound that I hardly showcase. I'm quite pleased with how it turned out in the end, especially because the sound defies easy categorization or classification. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. :)
