Let's start this morning with three questions, and I want to tell you this right away — I'm not over-speaking here and I'm not kidding — these are the most important questions you could ever ask yourself. What is your heaven?Who is your savior?Where are you now?Over the next 35 minutes I'm asking that each of you think about these questions as we dig into Philippians Chapter 3, and I don't know what each of you are bringing in here today, but I do know that God works by his Spirit through his word and I invite you to humble your heart to that fact. Let's pray:Father in heaven, our great God, you are King from of old and you are working your salvation right now in the midst of the earth. We ask this morning that you work in here, by your Spirit, through your word, for your glory, in Jesus's name, amen. 1) What Is Your Heaven? (verse 3)Look at verse 3. Now Pastor David Mathis talked a lot about this verse last week and it was so good, so we need to start here again this week, especially with that phrase “For we are the circumcision.” What does that mean again? What does Paul mean by calling this church and himself (that's who he has in mind when he says “we”) — what does he mean by “we are the circumcision”?The False TeachingNotice first that the phrase is meant to be a contrast to verse 2. In verse 2, Paul warns about false teachers and calls them dogs, evildoers, and mutilators of the flesh. And last week we learned two things about this: not all of us are dog people. … (there are some good cat people out there); we learned that these false teachers are Jewish false teachers who had been misleading Gentile Christians by telling them that the men had to be physically circumcised in order to really become part of the people of God.The false teachers said that if you wanted to be set apart by God, recognized by God as his people, then you have to obey Jewish laws, and the most central, life-adjusting law was for the men to be circumcised — that wasn't something you just did on a whim; it was a distinctive lifelong marker. And in the minds of the false teachers, circumcision was the marker that meant you were part of the people of God. They conflated the two: To be God's people was to be circumcised. To be circumcised was to be God's people. So, if someone were to say, “we are the circumcision” that's like saying “We are God's people.”Well, in verse 3, that's what Paul is doing. He says: “For we are the circumcision.” He's saying we are the real people of God — not these false teachers and those like them who think you have to be Jewish in order to be the people of God, but it's us, we — Paul who is ethnically Jewish and these Gentile believers — we are the real people of God, not by keeping Jewish laws like circumcision, but by faith in Christ. What They WantedAnd Paul is going to elaborate on that in the following verses and that's where we're gonna focus, but before we do that, I want to step back and ask a broader question … it's the question: What do they want? What did these false teachers want? That's another way of asking: What is their heaven? That's the way to think about “your heaven.” Your heaven is what you most want. I think for these false teachers, the answer is that they wanted to be God's people. That's the irony in what Paul says in verse 3 — These false teachers wanted to be the people of God (and they were trying to tell others how to be the people of God), but Paul says, No, you're actually dogs. You're evildoers and mutilators. We are the real people of God.The false teachers were wrong, but we should know they were probably sincere in what they were doing. And that's true for most false teachers: False teachers tend to really believe the lies they spread. Which is why it takes discernment on our part. The false teachers were spreading lies, but if what they wanted, if what they were after was to be the people of God, that's not a terrible thing. That's a pretty good thing to want. If your heaven is to be God's people, that's a good start to our first question. I mean, there are a lot of worse things to most want in life … Some people most want to be rich and famous. That's their heaven. Some people most want to be comfortable and cared for. That's their heaven. Some people most want to advance their cause at all costs. That's their heaven. So you have the worldly ambitious … and the comfort-loving don't-mind-me's … and the scorch-the-earth zealots — A lot of people fall into those three categories. Everybody has their heaven. What's yours? What do you most want? Pretend that this afternoon you meet a genie who gives you one wish, what are you asking? It can't be for more wishes; every genie shoots that down. What's the one thing you're asking? “What is your heaven?” — hold that question. Now here's the second question:2) Who Is Your Savior? (verses 4–7)Now, our first two questions are closely related. We're not done with the first one, but we need to see something here. We're going to focus on verses 4–7, but notice again in verse 3: After Paul says, “For we are the circumcision” (we're the real people of God) — he explains what that means in three things that we do. Pastor Mathis called these “three marks of what it means to really be a Christian” (verse 3) — We worship by the Spirit of God, we glory (or boast) in Christ Jesus, and we put no confidence in the flesh. And that last one is especially important because that's precisely the opposite of what these false teachers were doing and teaching. These false teachers were saying that in order to be part of God's people, the flesh does matter and you need to make it something you can put confidence in.So Paul directly shuts that down. To be a real Christian is to put NO confidence in your flesh — no confidence in your own efforts and energies as a way to earn God's favor. Christians are done with the flesh. But wait a minute …Confidence in the Flesh? The false teachers (or someone influenced by the false teachers) might hear Paul say that and think, “Well, he's just saying that because he feels sorry for these Gentiles who don't have anything good in their flesh!” “Paul is just stacking the deck in their favor!” It's like this: imagine I'm playing basketball with my four boys, and imagine, hypothetically, that a couple of the boys can't dribble well. They prefer to tuck the basketball like it's a football and run to the goal, hypothetically. Now what if we're about to play a game and I gather the four boys together and said, “Hey, boys, for this game, we put no confidence in dribbling. You don't have to dribble according to the rules of this game.”If I were to say that, the other two boys would say, “The only reason you're saying dribbling doesn't matter is because they can't dribble. This is rigged.”In verse 4 Paul anticipates that being said to him. He anticipates someone saying: The only reason you say flesh-boasting doesn't matter is because they've got nothing to flesh-boast about. And Paul goes like sanctified ballistic here. Notice he changes from the third person “we” in verse 3, and he starts talking about himself. He says: “[we, the real people of God] put no confidence in the flesh — THOUGH I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more.”This is what Paul is saying. He's saying: “You don't have to dribble in this game, but I can dribble. In fact, if anybody thinks he can dribble, I'm actually better.” Then in verse 5 Paul's like, Give me the ball. Let me show you. And he tells us seven things about himself that make him remarkably Jewish. He is so Jewish, and was once so committed to Judaism, that he beats these false teachers in their own game. He outscores them on their own scorecard. Paul was everything (and more) of what these false teachers could only hope to be. And it's fascinating what he says in verse 6 when he says that he was “a persecutor of the church.” This means that Paul has actually been where these false teachers were, except that he was so extreme in his zeal that he didn't just try to make Christianity more Jewish, he tried to end Christianity. Paul was better at doing what these false teachers are trying to do. This is a stunning passage. Paul says I could play your game. I once did — and did better than you. But verse 7. Counted As LossPaul says: “But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.” (More literally, he says here: “But whatever was gain to me, this I counted, because of Christ, as loss.”)He uses an accounting metaphor. And notice that the verb “counted” in verse 7 is in the perfect tense — it's something done in the past. That same verb is used two other times in verse 8 and they're both in the present tense. But first, in verse 7, there was a past action, a past “counting.” There was a time when Paul reconfigured his P&L sheet. He had been running hard in his Jewishness, excelling, accruing, building an impressive resume — lots of religious gains and profit. More than anyone. But then, he took that entire column, all those things he counted as gains, and he said “LOSS.” Why? Why the change? Because of Christ.Paul met Jesus Christ — against all odds. We can read the story in Acts Chapter 9. Paul retells the story himself in Acts 22 and 26. The risen Lord Jesus intervened in Paul's life. Jesus knocked him off his horse and saved him. Paul had been zealous for God, but Jesus told him he had been going about it all the wrong way. Which means, although Paul wanted God, he was trying to get God by trusting in himself. He put his confidence in his own gifts and achievements, which means he looked to these things to be his savior. Questions ConnectionAnd here's where I want you to see how the first two questions are connected: What is your heaven? And Who is your Savior?Your heaven is what you most want. Your savior is who you are trusting in to get you what you most want. We have to get both of these right, but you can imagine how easily this could go wrong. The gate of wrongness is wide here. There more than one way to mess thing up.Like, you could get it wrong both ways: false heaven and false savior. And that's probably none of you in here. All those people are working hard somewhere right now. They're running hard down dead-end roads. But what about true heaven, false savior? That's like Paul. You want God, but your savior is your own flesh. You're trusting in your own gifts and your own achievements to be why God accepts you. I know what that's like. My Own StoryMy heaven for the longest time was to always play baseball at the next level, which meant in high school I wanted to play in college. So I was pursuing that. And one weekend I was at this showcase event — and a showcase event is when you go to this place and try to showcase your skills in front of a bunch of college or pro scouts. Well, at this thing, one of the coaches there who had been recruiting me, about halfway through the showcase, he pulled me aside, and he said, “Parnell, hustle is what makes you good.”It was not a compliment. What he was saying was: “You're not very good, so you have to play really hard.” I was 17 and I remember it to this day (and there are some deep reasons why) but one reason is because I knew he was right. It cemented something for me: if baseball was my heaven, hustle was my savior. I better bust it. I better get after it. But then, I got into this car wreck, and God, in his mercy, started to do a new work in my life, and after about a year, baseball was not my heaven anymore. God became my heaven. I wanted to know him. I wanted to be used by him, so I left baseball and started to pursue theological training to be a pastor. But here's the thing: I was still hustling. I thought: If I want to know God, if I want God to accept me and use me, I have to really play hard. So I did. I had intense spiritual disciplines. I hit the books like I never had before, and I became religiously competitive. Until one early morning in prayer, when everybody else was sleeping and I was really playing hard, I told God that the reason he loved me more than he loved my roommates was because of my hustle. I told God that. And in that moment … I can remember exactly where I was — it was almost like Jesus stepped into the room and he said You've got this all wrong. It's called grace. Grace changed my life.“I Boast No More”See, Jesus is God's grace to us and all of him for us is grace. Which means, you can't be proud about discovering grace because it's only by grace that you know it's by grace. And then it's only by grace that you know it's by grace that you know it's by grace. It's just grace, grace, grace, grace until you get to God who “before the foundation of the world was laid, according to his eternal and immutable purpose, and the secret counsel and good pleasure of his will, hath chosen [a people] in Christ unto everlasting glory, out of his mere free grace and love, without any other thing in the creature as the condition or cause moving him thereunto” (1689, 3.5).Go back before time! Go as far back as you can! Turn every angle you want! It's all grace. And when we understand that, our own righteousness just looks stupid. All those gifts and achievements you once boasted in, if you are a Christian there was a time when you counted as loss. We have exposed them as false saviors. And we say:No more my God, I boast no moreOf all the duties I have doneI quit the hopes I held beforeTo trust the merits of Thy SonThe best obedience of my handsDares not appear before Thy throneBut faith can answer Thy demandsBy pleading what my Lord has doneJesus Christ is the only true Savior. He's the only one who gets you God … if God is who you want. Prosperity Gospel? What about those who look to Jesus to be their Savior, but they want Jesus to get them something other than God? What if Jesus is your Savior but your heaven is comfort and ease? So true Savior, false heaven.Well that's what's called the “prosperity gospel” — people who use Jesus to get themselves temporal pleasures. They use Jesus to get something other than God. And of course we think “that's not us!” — right? We would never do that, but this is where we need to stop and think. It's why the third question matters.First, What is your heaven? Second, Who is your savior?3) Where Are You Now? (verses 8–9)In verse 8, Paul is no longer talking about the past, but he's doubling down on his accounting. In verse 7 he said, “But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.”Verse 8: “Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.”So Paul didn't just get the math right one time, but this is a present counting. A current counting. And then Paul explains more of what this means, verse 8: For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him [Paul wants Jesus. He wants to be found in Jesus] not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith …Those things that Paul once trusted in — his own righteousness — that's all garbage to him now.“Savior” once he called his flesh. “Sewage” now he counts his best. His “own righteousness” does not get him God. The best obedience of his hands does not earn God's favor, but he needs the righteousness of God through faith in Christ — Paul says it twice in verse 9 — he's talking about “the righteousness of God that depends on faith.” That's what he needs.Paul needs GOD to call him righteous which God only does through his faith in Jesus. That goes for you too, for us. Listen: the only way God accepts you is by looking at you and seeing something not of you. I hope that doesn't hurt your feelings. It just means that Jesus, not yourself, Jesus must be your Savior. Jesus is who gets you God.The Ultimate GoalAnd more than that. Look at the first thing Paul says in verse 8. He presently counts everything as loss because of “the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” [He's going to pick this back up in verse 10, which we're gonna talk about next week (but to preach the same things to you is no trouble to us and is safe for you). So we'll talk about it now and next week.]What we see in this knowing Jesus is that Paul doesn't just want to be right with God — that's penultimate — but the final goal, the ultimate goal, the real heaven, is a relationship with God through Christ. That is what makes heaven heaven. It's to know Christ. And what's interesting here is that Jesus is not just the means to get you what you want, but Jesus also becomes what you want. Jesus is means and end. To know Jesus is of surpassing worth. That is what is most valuable — to know “Christ Jesus my Lord.” And this is the only time in the New Testament when Paul says it exactly like that. “Christ Jesus my Lord.” There are several times when he says “Christ Jesus our Lord” but here he says “my Lord.”What we see here is both “intimacy and devotion.” Devotion in that Paul has surrendered to Jesus as Lord. Jesus is King and in charge. So we do what Jesus says to do and go where Jesus says to go. Devotion. But it's also intimacy, closeness, in that Paul says Jesus is my Lord — he knows Jesus as my Lord. This is a deep, personal knowing. It's real experience in real relationship. Intimacy. The late commentator Gordon Fee says, “There is something unfortunate about a cerebral Christianity that “knows” but does not know in this way…”We Are Heart-PeopleAnd church, I don't want that to be true of us. Y'all know that we really value doctrine around here — what you think about God and his world matters. The head is important. But Cities Church, we are heart people, and we want heart-knowledge.And what that means at the end of the day, when our thinking is in order, when our doctrine is in line, we just want to know Jesus. Not in an abstract, distant, check-the-box kind of way, but we want to remember his realness in all of life. We want to be alive to the ever-present fact that he is alive. Jesus is near to us. His Spirit dwells within us. He never leaves us. He never forsakes us. I know this is crazy, but it's true — Jesus loves us. Jesus loves me. I want to know him like that. I want us to know him like that. And so, where are you now? Here's a little catechism for you:What is your heaven? My heaven is to be closer to JesusWho is your savior? My only savior is Jesus.Where are you now? I'm pressing on to know Jesus my Lord. That's what brings us to the Table. The TableWe come to this Table glad and grateful — not to work, but to rest; not to do, but to receive. For those of us who trust in Jesus, that's what's going on in this moment. But if you're here and you've not yet trusted in Jesus, it means you're still looking to your own efforts to be your savior. But listen: you can be done with that today. You can count all those things as loss right now and you can put your faith in Jesus. I invite you to do that. For those who don't trust Jesus yet, trust him now. For those of us who do trust Jesus, let's receive his Table and give him thanks.

Our latest Club Fusion entry spans a wide range of music, catching up on what we missed in January and February and previewing what's to come on dance floors in the next few weeks. There's plenty to talk about so let's dive in! John Summit returns with "Shiver," the follow-up to his massive 2023 hit "Where Are You Now," featuring another outstanding vocal performance by Hayla. While this track is a solid floor-filler, it may lean a bit too closely to the magic of its predecessor. However, that won't deter anyone from enjoying its deep atmosphere and haunting vocals. Summit also offers an exceptional update to Temper Trap's "Sweet Disposition," a song that never tires in its various versions. In fact, "Sweet Disposition" is on track to rival Underworld's "Born Slippy" as a DJ favorite for revitalization. Summit's take maintains the original's integrity while adding his unique flair to the track. Both releases are essential for any DJ set. Among the tracks we're excited about is Becky Hill's latest single, "Never Be Alone," from her forthcoming album. The D.O.D remix cleverly incorporates the bass synth riff from Armand Van Helden's 90s remix of "Spin Spin Sugar" by Sneaker Pimps, elevating an already stellar track on the dance floor. Ariana Grande and Dua Lipa also contribute new offerings. Ariana's "Yes, and?" has been stuck in our heads like glue, echoing Madonna's iconic "Vogue" and inspiring numerous mashups. Felix Jahen's version stays true to the original while giving it a contemporary lift. We eagerly anticipate Grande's next album. Dua Lipa's third album seems to explore similar themes as her groundbreaking "Future Nostalgia." Personally, I would have chosen "Training Season" over "Houdini" as the lead single (excluding "Dance the Night Away" from the "Barbie" soundtrack). The songs don't fall flat, but they lack the captivating edge of her previous work. Nevertheless, the remixes manage to elevate them for the dance floor, keeping Lipa relevant in the house music scene. It's time to spotlight emerging DJs you should be following, starting with AVALAN ROKSTON. Currently in Beatport's Top 10 with their remake of Moby's "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?" they've also released "Faith," a song teased on TikTok for over a month that truly lives up to the hype. The emotional depth of "Faith" is undeniable, especially when the euphoria hits. Their remix of London Grammar's "Strong" from 2023, though new to us, is so impressive it deserves recognition among the top dance songs of last year and has been included here despite ...

We had the pleasure of interviewing Jill Andrews over Zoom video!A few years ago, critically acclaimed singer-songwriter, Jill Andrews, went back home to sing at the memorial service of a childhood friend. In mourning, surrounded by relics of her past, the things and people she used to know, she was struck by how much life had changed. Perfectly preserved brick homes, sidewalks on both sides of the street, untouched jungle gyms and corner stores had her calling out for childhood, an age she realized all at once, had passed by. Fridays were a trip to Blockbuster and a couple of Fruit Roll Ups. Freedom was a bicycle and daylight. Andrews reminisces, “I had so much independence….and played so much kick the can with my friends.”Standing at the intersection of memory lane and tomorrow, Modern Age is a stunning reflection on how far we've all come, but one that leaves the listener wondering about the price of “progress.” Produced by Lucas Morton at 4115 Studios in Nashville, Tennessee, Andrews latest effort features ten tracks that range from anthemic, Kate Bush-esque pop dreams with ethereal synths and lush vocals, to intimate acoustic confessions that hit closer to Madison Cunningham's Where Are You Now. On opening slow burn, “80s Baby,” Andrews remarks with some wistfulness on just how different the world has come to be since the days of making mixtapes and cruising the cul-de-sacs. In the chorus is a bittersweet declaration: “I'm an 80's baby/I'm an 80's baby/I've been thinking lately/How much has changed.” Indie-pop masterpiece “Connection” follows, continuing to explore the schism between then and now, contrasting today's tech savvy love with meeting someone the old-fashioned way in an irresistible, roll-the-windows-down throwback, ready and waiting for Tiktok covers and a perfect placement. “Better Life,” the song that inspired the record, has Andrews grieving the loss of a “golden-haired beauty queen” to addiction, wishing there had been another path, before turning on the back half of the record, to the path she has gone down, her relationships, failures, hopes, and fears. Leaning into the contemplative writing that launched her career, Andrews explores complexities of looking back and moving forward simultaneously, giving grace to a partner as he processes his past on “Dark Days” before asking for grace herself in “Patience.” “Boundless Love,” a track Andrews reveals “might be her favorite” closes out the album, assuring us that even though much in life looks different than it used to, love remains.Modern Age remembers an era where the rhythm of life played slower, when we rewound cassette tapes with our fingertips, and talked on the phone for hours. With thoughtful and brilliant performances by multi-instrumentalist Tyler Chester (Madison Cunningham, Sara Bareilles), vocalists Becca Mancari and Anthony De Costa, and producer Lucas Morton, Modern Age is an ode to simpler times, an album that goes beyond nostalgia to veneration of what were to so many, the golden years. We want to hear from you! Get early access to our latest psychology lectures: http://bit.ly/new-talks5 Repeated and chronic exposure to large volumes of difficult stories can erode our sense of empathy for others. We can become hardened and desensitized to suffering – or conversely, we can become swallowed up by empathic strain. Since the demand often outweighs what we can offer, we may also find ourselves experiencing moral distress when we cannot help everyone who turns to us. What is the impact of this on our physical and emotional well-being? How can we stay well while providing support to others? In this presentation, based on her popular Tedx talk, Françoise Mathieu will explore: — Levels of Exposure: Assess what elements are risk factors for you — Where Are You Now? “It doesn't matter how hard we work, or how many hours we put in, if OUR Paradigm (or mental program that has exclusive control over our habitual behavior) does not change, the results will ultimately remain the same, year after year.” Bob Proctor, from the Paradigm Shift Seminar. Welcome back to The Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast, where we cover the science-based evidence behind social and emotional learning (for schools) and emotional intelligence training (in the workplace) with tools, ideas and strategies that we can all use for immediate results. I'm Andrea Samadi, and for this week's Brain Fact Friday, I want to revisit how exactly we change our identity, to build a stronger, more resilient, 2.0 version of ourselves, by reviewing our self-image and self-belief that we covered on EPISODE #199[i] that had over 1300 downloads, showing me that you are just as interested in this topic as I am. In this episode we will discuss: ✔ What is PRAXIS (the application of a theory) and how can we use this idea? ✔ What is our self-image vs our self-esteem? ✔ How is our self-image/identity formed? ✔ How do we identify gaps or areas we can improve? ✔ How can we change our self-image/identity? ✔ Can our confidence levels be seen by others? ✔ Can we predict a person's self-esteem levels (or what they think of themselves) by looking at their brain? ✔ 4 Steps to create a 2.0 version of YOU! What is PRAXIS and How Can We Use it For Improved Results? This weekend I was thinking about life, and how we just get one shot to make it a meaningful one. I'm sure I'm not alone with this line of thinking, especially these days, when it comes to acknowledging how fragile life really is. Earlier this month, I lost another mentor—Mark Low, who was my neighbor in Toronto, who was the one who handed me “the” book that would change my life forever. You can read the story I've told often in the show notes[ii] but for this episode, after thinking about how precious life is, and all the lessons I've learned from the many mentors along the way, there was one profound lesson that stood out to me, that I want to tie into this episode that I'll dedicate it, to my neighbor, Mark Low. When I first went to work in the motivational speaking industry, back in the late 1990s, I was hired by my neighbor, Mark, to help with administrative tasks, that eventually moved into sales, leading me to travel to each of the seminars and learn from all the speakers and connections made over the years and I talk about everyone I've learned from often on this podcast. In those early days, I would receive a paycheck from Mark's company, that was called The Praxis Group. I remember looking at my check one day, and asking Mark “Hey, what does Praxis mean?” and he looked over at me from the desk on the other side of the room (we worked out of his parent's basement back then, with our desks facing a wall that was covered in charts with our upcoming seminars, and he replied, “Andrea, it's when you integrate your beliefs with your behaviors.” That's was it. He just stopped for a minute and watched my face looking confused, and he added that “people really change when this happens and that they become an entirely new person” with this concept of Praxis. I looked up the definition that Miriam Webster[iii] gives today and it says that Praxis is the “practical application of a theory” or the “practice of an art, science or skill.” If you look up “becoming a better version of you” these days, the topic is still of high interest. I remember thinking “that's incredible”, as I love everything about change, growth, or skill-building but looking back now, I'm sure it took me over 22 years to get the full understanding of the meaning of Praxis and how exactly we integrate our beliefs with our behavior to attain this sought-after change which happens when we repeat the new habits of what we want, over and over again. I had to dig a bit, but I did find an old photo of our offices in those early days, before Bob Proctor Seminars took off and became The Proctor Gallagher Institute, with an official office. But in these early days, Mark Low worked at the desk to the left of me, and while it's funny to see all of the old technology we used to use, or how we manually kept track of the seminar attendees with wall charts, there is much more behind the work that was done in those early days and it had to do with Praxis, which was why people paid the money that they did to attend these seminars. Seminar attendees were all looking to create a new version of themselves, by changing their old beliefs, and then integrating their new beliefs (that they had learned) with their current life. They were paying for this concept of Praxis---whether it was around changing their beliefs about their ability to earn money, (there were many seminars on that topic) or improve their relationships, or creativity, or productivity, there was a change of thinking required that would lead to a paradigm shift, and then to permanent change, which I'm sure is what we all want in life. We are either improving and moving forward, to this new version of ourselves, or we are not. PHOTO of Andrea working with Mark Low, selling Bob Proctor's Seminars in Toronto, December, 2000. So What Does Praxis (or Integrating our Beliefs and Our Behavior) Have to do with Our Self-Image? The Mountain State Centers for Independent Living has a definition of self-image that I can relate to. It says that “Self-image is how you perceive yourself. It is a number of self-impressions that have built up over time… These self-images can be very positive, giving a person confidence in their thoughts and actions, or negative, making a person doubtful of their capabilities and ideas.”[iv] Our self-image is what we see when we look in the mirror, but like the definition we just read explains, what we see can be either be positive, giving us confidence, or negative, making us doubtful of our capabilities and ideas.” Our self-image is something that's built up over time and I would say that it exists in the non-conscious part of our mind. See the image in the show notes that I took from my notes from the Winner's Image Seminar, that eventually went into my first book, The Secret for Teens Revealed. This way of looking at our mind originated from the late Dr. Thurman Fleet, the Founder of Concept Therapy, and is a good way to think of where our “self-image” exists in our mind. REMEMBER: We can have a self-image that controls our ability to earn money, where we either see ourselves as a strong income earner, or not. We can have a self-image that controls our weight and health, where we see ourselves as healthy, or not. We can have a self-image that controls our grades in school, where we see ourselves as a good student, or not. If we look at the image in the show notes of our self-image in our mind, it's easy to see how what we think about ourselves, (our self-image) controls our results in life. To change our paradigms, or old way of thinking, we need to do the work to overcome the old self-image that controls our results with a NEW self-image that with time, will override the old, outdated version of ourselves. Our NEW 2.0 self-image that's based on the new actions we must take, will eventually cause us to create new conditions and circumstances, setting us up for a whole new life. Who wouldn't want to choose this new path, over the old version of you? It just takes WORK and THE WILL to do it. When We Believe in Ourselves, We Will Do That Work Required for Our New Results. Our self-image also has a lot to do with our self-esteem “which is the overall sense of respect for ourselves and involves how favorably (or unfavorably) we feel about ourselves.”[v] Obviously when we are earning more money than less, we will feel more confident, or if we are a student achieving excellent grades, this boosts our confidence levels. It's these strong confidence levels that we will need to override our doubts, fears and uncertainties that will come our way, allowing us to achieve PRAXIS, and the change that Mark Low mentioned comes along with creating a NEW identity. You become a winner, or a good income earner or an excellent student. You Become a New Version of YOU! Can Our Confidence Levels Achieved by This Thing Called Praxis Be Seen by Others? When I look at the photo of myself that I found back in December, 2000, (I was 29 years old) I can remember sitting in that chair like it was yesterday. I know that I felt confident with myself, (my self-esteem) enough to quit my teaching position, and try something entirely new, but there was something missing with my equation. While I had a strong self-esteem (what I thought of myself) I had a weak self-image, as I worried about what other people thought of me. I think this is an age/experience concept, that shifts with time. But what goes on inside our minds, shows on the outside (with our behaviors and end results) like we can see with the diagram I drew out, so I do think that we can see someone's confidence levels, or lack of confidence. It's almost like this cybernetic mechanism that keeps us stuck from moving forward with whatever it is we are working on. When we are stuck, or unable to move forward, there's something blocking our results at the non-conscious level. And we can, with some introspection, figure out what it is. While writing this episode, I was talking to one of my close friends from high school she said to me “do you ever look back at pictures and think, wow, I wish I knew then, what I know now?” She got that right for sure. I wish I knew this quote 22 years ago, from America's leading psychiatrist and brain health expert, Dr. Daniel Amen, who reminds us-- “When you're 18, you think everybody is judging you, and you care deeply about what they think of you. When you reach 40, you no longer care what anybody thinks about you. At 60, you realize nobody has been thinking about you at all because most people only think about themselves.” (Dr. Daniel Amen). Try This Activity Yourself. Find a photograph of you from a long time ago, and see what you see. It's really easy to see it in others, and more difficult when it comes to self-reflection. What do you see when you look at older photos of yourself? Do you remember how you felt in the photo? How is your self-esteem equation (what you think of yourself) vs your self-image (how you see yourself based on what you think others think of you), leading to your level of confidence? You can learn a lot about yourself, and what you can improve from this level of self-awareness. Once We See Our Gaps, How Do We Build Up Our Confidence? Once we see our confidence equation, if you were like me, and noticed that for whatever reason, you had an area of your equation that you could change (either your self-esteem levels, or self-image) then this week's brain fact Friday is for you. On this episode, we will create a plan to fix our gaps, and override the older version of YOU. The Brain and Self-Esteem Before we create this plan, for this week's Brain Fact Friday, I want to revisit a part of our brain that researchers at Dartmouth College have identified as a region of the human brain that seems to predict a person's self-esteem levels, or what they think of themselves (where our identity begins that leads us to our self-belief). We did cover this on EPISODE #199 but I want to look at this part of the brain from a different angle and how it relates to PRAXIS, or integrating our NEW beliefs with our NEW behaviors, for NEW results, and increased confidence levels that we will need to build this 2.0 version of ourselves. This part of the brain that researchers discovered can predict a person's self-esteem levels is called “the frontostriatal pathway, and the stronger and more active it is in the brain, the more self-esteem someone has.”[vi] The lead researcher of this study, Robert Chavez found that self-esteem lies in this pathway as shown in the image in the show notes and that “this pathway connects the medial PFC that deals with self-knowledge to the ventral striatum that deals with feelings of motivation and reward.” He called this pathway “the road” and that “a person with a strong road was more likely to have higher long-term self-esteem.” He also reminded us “how repeated behaviors (like meditation) can alter brain traits,” and we've talked about why repetition, or doing things over and over again can strengthen these neural pathways that lead to “stronger roads” and “higher levels of self-esteem.” How Do We Build a New and More Confident YOU? Or How Can We Integrate Our Beliefs with Our Behaviors? This comes with time, experience and like we learned from Dr. John Dunlosky's research from EPISODE #37[vii], from repeating the same thing, over and over again to strengthen those neural pathways, leading to “stronger roads” in the brain. This weekend, as I was thinking about Mark Low and his business name, PRAXIS, and all the people he helped over the years, I went back to those early days when I watched many people “switch on” something with their thinking, and make significant changes in their lives as they changed their self-image, overriding their old paradigms, and created this NEW 2.0 version of themselves. I'm always on the look-out for those who do the work to make this change as many people get stuck in the process along the way, which is why I wanted to cover this on this week's Brain Fact Friday, to bring clarity to how we can all accomplish this change. So How Do We Create A NEW Self-Image and Override Our Old Paradigms? Now this is the part that I think took me over 22 years to really understand. I think this part is clear, that over time, or doing things a certain way, we can override our paradigms, creating a new self-image, leading us to new results and “stronger roads” in our brain, leading us to higher levels of self-esteem. That makes sense, right? When I asked Mark what Praxis meant and he said “it means integrating our beliefs with our behaviors” I don't think I really understood how “Praxis” happens, like how do we make this change? How do we integrate our beliefs with our behaviors? It doesn't just happen one day….it happens over time, after doing the same thing over and over again. One day, we look up from whatever it is we are doing, and notice that this change is now permanent. Like my high school friend reminded me, “don't you wish we knew what we know now, back in those days?” I wish I was more confident in my abilities, and didn't worry what others thought about me. I hope this awareness can help others to shorten their curve to changing old beliefs and habits, and create a NEW 2.0 version of themselves. I saw it when I interviewed Ryan O'Neill, with EPISODE #203[viii] on “Making Your Vision a Reality” because he changed in front of my eyes into an entirely different person. A NEW 2.0 version of himself. When I began working with Ryan, around 10 years ago, he mentioned that he never imagined where his life would be today, starring on Television shows around the globe for his work as a Paranormal Researcher. I thought about the hard work Ryan put in, to change his self-image, leading to new results, and I thought it was almost like taking a glass of water, and putting one drop of food coloring into it, likening the food color to the repetition of daily activity that's required for this change. To make a long-lasting color change on the water, we have to keep adding new drops of color to the water, every day. We can't just add a drop or two, and expect the color change to last. It will fade away, unless the drops are repeated. Exactly like the way we must repeat our daily actions, grinding away our old self-image, and building a new one in its place. It's a process, but this new self-image, leads us to new results, and this new version of you. This is all possible with a vision, hard work and persistence. How to Achieve PRAXIS and Integrate Your Beliefs with Your Behavior? I've included a ROADMAP for you to use in the show notes for the next steps, but it doesn't matter what you use. This is just a vision to help you to plan out where you are and where you are going. WHERE ARE YOU NOW? Start with the Self-Esteem Equation and Look for Your Gaps. Strong Self-Esteem (what you think of yourself) + Strong Self-Image (how you perceive yourself based on how you think others see you) = Strong Confidence Levels. Where is your self-esteem (your overall sense of self-respect)? Does this are need work? Where is your self-image (how you see yourself based on how others perceive you)? Are you like me, and just need to let go of what others think of you? Once you can see the gaps, you know where to begin. Write out the OLD identity you want to override (where you are now) and replace it with your NEW identity or vision. WHERE ARE YOU GOING? What is the NEW Self-Image you would like to create? (ie, good student, lose weight, leader in educational neuroscience?). Write out your NEW identity in as much detail as possible. DO THE WORK: What do you need to do to achieve this goal? Find someone who has achieved what you want to do, and ask how to begin. Create an action plan, and don't stop until you get to where you want to go. INTEGRATE YOUR WINS: As you make incremental wins along the way, you must integrate these into your life. Celebrate each win, every step of the way, since the brain is a “prediction machine”[ix] (Andrew Huberman) and if you have too many losses in a row, the brain will begin to predict more losses. REVIEW: To review this week's Brain Fact Friday, did you know that researchers found a part of the brain that predicts a person's self-esteem levels called “the frontostriatal pathway, and the stronger and more active it is in the brain, the more self-esteem someone has?”[x] Did you know that we can change our self-image (how we perceive ourselves) by repeatedly taking action towards something that we want, (like Ryan O'Neill did in the Paranormal Industry) and this action will override our old self-image, watering down the paradigms that once controlled us (like we explained with the glass of water changing color with each drop of food coloring added), and giving us heightened confidence levels, and new results? Like Mark said to me 22 years ago, “It's called Praxis or integrating our beliefs with our behavior” and when this happens, it creates an entirely new person. It just takes WORK and the WILL to make this change. I hope you enjoyed this episode that took me back 22 years ago, as I thought of where my journey began, in those early days of working in the motivational speaking industry. This episode is for you Mark, and for all those people who you worked with, including myself, helping us to change into this NEW 2.0 version of ourselves, that we could barely imagine without your vision, and I hope that it impacts listeners, the same way it did for me, all those years ago. See you next week. We had the pleasure of interviewing The Wrecks over Zoom video. The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows by John Koenig which defines made up words for indescribable emotions classifies the neologism “sonder” as the “profound feeling of realizing that everyone, including strangers passing in the street, has a life as complex as one's own." The Wreck's vocalist/producer Nick Anderson landed on "Sonder" as the title of their sophomore album, which is out now via Big Noise Music Group. The band's most recent singles, the sparkling post-breakup anthem “Lone Survivor” and liberating alt-rock track “I Love This Part,” showcase that they've fully honed-in on and embraced their characteristic genre bending alt-rock, as well as having evolved and matured their sounds for this triumphal venture of a second album. Anderson says that experimenting with minor keys and calculated lyrics. On Sonder, there's not only their distinctive witty, frantic genre-bending tracks (“Sonder,” “Don't Be Scared,” “Unholy,” “Ugly Side”), but also their take on mesmerizing alt-rock love/loss ballads (“Where Are You Now?,” “Dystopia,” “Unrequited,” “No Place I'd Rather Be,” “Normal”).Sonder follows the release of the band's 2016 debut EP We Are The Wrecks (their first single “Favorite Liar” currently has 36 million+ streams on Spotify), their 2018 Panic Vertigo EP, their 2020 Static EP as well as their 2020 debut LP Infinitely Ordinary (58 million+ streams on Spotify). The Wrecks continue to rack up the massive fan base that has already given their top five singles on Spotify over 80 million listens. Poised for a wide-open road ahead of them, Nick Anderson and The Wrecks continue to charge into the limelight. Not too shabby for a kid from Wellsville, just two hours south of nowhere. The Wrecks begun as vocalist/producer Nick Anderson's sole endeavor and has since been rounded out by Aaron Kelley (bass), Nick “Schmizz” Schmidt (guitar) and Billy Nally (drums). The Wrecks also collaborated on a select number of tracks off Sonder with producers Westen Weiss (Meek Mill, Camila Cabello, Post Malone) and Dillon Deskin (Flo Rida, Will Sparks, Different Heaven, Myrne) to expand their sound. We want to hear from you! This mix is created for radio broadcast between 5-7 am, but it is not intended to induce sleep: it is way too 'active' for that. I created this with the intention to manipulate your dreams when you're asleep or half-awake at the time of the broadcast. In that case, it shouldn't be played too loud or you'll probably not be able to sleep at all. When listening on-demand, at different times, sleep is not an issue. Just enjoy the ride and let the sequence guide you. But be sure to sit back, relax, and forget about time. Winter Solstice 3 is created from bits, pieces, samples, and short fragments of music that deserve to be explored in its full original form; only very few tracks are represented in their full original length. note: first time is start time, second time is fragment length Part 1: 05:00 - 06:00 00:00 06:40 Loren Nerell - Last GamelanThe Gong Prophet, 2021, Soundquest Music05:08 06:08 Erik Levander - MassaJöker, 2021, Glacial Movements Records09:54 03:31 Alva Noto - Hybr:ID Oval BlackholeHYbr:ID I, 2021, Noton12:39 02:30 Slim Vic - Ebenist (Part 1)Mörkrets Narr, Lamour Recordsa14:51 02:26 Lustmord & Karin Park - PerihelionAlter, 2021, Pelagic Records16:34 02:26 Hans Zimmer - Bene GesseritDune OST, 2021, WaterTower Music18:05 02:43 Clarice Jensen - The DevilIdentifying Features, 2021, FatCat Records18:06 01:54 Scanner - Drones Places 01Earthbound Transmissions, 2021, Room4018:22 01:40 John Luther Adams - Arctic Dreams 7. Music For Long Winter Nights This is my 2-hour contribution to the (7-hour) ambient music night on Concertzender Nederland radio, which was broadcast in the December 19-20 night. When compiling this set, I tried to keep in mind that this was intended to be listened to in the deepest and darkest of the night. But it is not a 'sleep set', due to the variety of moods and atmospheres. It's a celebration of the dark of night that can be enjoyed at any time - every time you're in the mood for a moment (or 2 hours) of unhurried immersiveness. Today on The Neil Haley Show's ProVision Celebrity Segment, Eric Couch of ProVision and The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Country Music Legend Clint Black. After 30 years of ‘killin' time,' Clint Black is ready to celebrate. The multi-million selling country icon is set to embark on a tour commemorating the 30th anniversary of his groundbreaking debut album Killin' Time, which all but altered the landscape of country music. Three decades later, Clint remains humble as ever about the massive influence he has had on the genre. If Black won't say it outright, his staggering career speaks for itself. His is one of the most storied careers in modern music. Black surged to superstardom as part of the fabled Class of '89, reaching #1 with five consecutive singles from his triple-platinum debut, Killin' Time. He followed that with the triple-platinum Put Yourself in My Shoes, and then a string of platinum and gold albums throughout the '90s. Perhaps most impressively, Clint wrote or co-wrote every one of his more than three dozen chart hits, including "A Better Man," "Where Are You Now," "When My Ship Comes In," "A Good Run of Bad Luck," "Summer's Comin'," "Like the Rain" and "Nothin' But the Taillights," part of a catalog that produced 22 #1 singles and made him one of the most successful singer/songwriters of the modern era.
009. This is a meaty episode so you might want to listen to this one when you have a pen and paper handy. Listening to this after january 1st? Who cares? It's never too late to work on your goals for the year. There is no perfect start date. REFLECTION - start with reflection - what do you want more of? Less of?WHERE ARE YOU NOW? Look at the main pillars of life and rate where you are right now in those areas. 1 is not satisfied at all, 10 is it couldn't get any better. this a zero judgment zone. Then pick up to 3 areas you'd like to focus on in 2020. Write them down. How do you want to FEEL at the end of 2020? We start with the WHY you are choosing the goals or the habits you are choosing. And i believe that if you dig down to the deepest meaning of the WHY, it is just an emotion that you want to feel. So, i try to come up with 5 feelings that you deeply want to feel at the end of each day, each month, the year. Once you have your list of 5 feelings, imagine a person who feels that way. Maybe it's future you, maybe it's someone that you look up to. If you are going to be a person who experiences these feelings, what thing are you doing to make that happen. Make a brainstorm of all the thigns that come to mind that are actins or results that you would be doing if you were feeling that way. WORD OF THE YEAR: Some people also like to choose a word of the year or a phrase of the year.BRAINSTORM L Now you're going to brainstorm a list of possible goals for 2020. Write down alll the things you can think of that you think would be a cool goal. Don't worry about HOW you will do it, don't worry about if you have the time or the money or the skills or the emotional capacity to do them. CHOOSE GOALS:: Let's pick a few goals that will get you closer to where you want to be at the end of the year. Take your list of feelings, your word of the year and the 3 life pillars that you want to focus on and you're going to make up to 7 goals for 2020. You want each goal to be getting you closer to that list of feelings, you want it to improve at least one of the 3 life pillars you're focusing on, and you want it to align with your word of the year. You also want to make sure you're not choosing too many big, giant goals at one time. You want to set yourself up for success here. Write them down. You are already ahead of the game. Writing down your goals makes them more powerful. When choosing your goals, pick what works for you. Not what you think is right or what someone else would approve of. This is your life. This is your day. Live it for you. When you are living your truest life you are showing others they can do it to. If you are capable of having the idea of this goal, you are capable of accomplishing it. Don't doubt yourself. Just go after it. Your goal is not going to be easy everyday. It is not going to be fun everyday. It doesn't have to be permanent - keep at it for a quarter and then revisit. Don't worry about doing it the right way. You do you. You have your goals. Now how the heck are you going to keep going after them? Listen to the episode to find out!
[Ep 201] In the first episode of this series, I described a hypothetical character in a hypothetical game—a little dragon that gains power or abilities after playing the game for a while. This dragon demonstrated what it means to level up in a video game. Depending on the rules of this hypothetical game, the dragon might gather certain tokens, interact with key players, or conquer a small castle, and by completing the tasks and achieving the goals, he gains enough experience and skills to level up. And leveling up transforms him and empowers him with bigger flames, broader wings, better aim. As he emerges at the next level, he then plays in that evolved state with more powerful skills to gain even more experience and level up yet again! You are that dragon. Where Are You Now? You've been at this writing game, so to speak, for a while, working the plan you made to level up. For the past few weeks, you've awakened each morning with more intention about your writing. You've implemented your plan intentionally, faithfully, relentlessly. You've broken down goals into smaller goals and tasks, scheduled the work, completed tasks, and made progress. You've evaluated how things are going and adjusted the plan as needed. It's been about a month. After this purposeful effort, where are you now? Have you leveled up to where you thought you'd be? Did you exceed your goal? Did you fall short but realize you're closer than you were before? You Leveled Up Let's start with leveling up. Did you level up to where you thought you'd be in a month? Did you achieve your goal? If so, congratulations! This is why you made a plan and set out with goals that you've chipped away at, one after another, with grit and determination. Look back to see where you've been compared with where you are now, and celebrate. You, my friend, are on fire! You Exceeded Your Goal Some people double-down on areas showing promise or take advantage of an opportunity that arises. In doing so, they exceed their goal. Is that you? Did you level up beyond what you expected? If so, wow! Make that a double-congratulations! Roll with that momentum and keep doing what works. Lock in your routine, because it's working for you. At this pace, you may level up again before you know it! You Fell Short of Your Goal It's possible you got blown off track and fell short of your goal. You wouldn't describe your current state as having leveled up. If that's where you find yourself, take heart. You can press restart and try again. I know you can, because I've been there and pressed that button myself. You can always start again. Celebrate Progress And yet, you don't have to return to square one. If you consider where you were with where you are now, you'll see that you've made progress. Even if you've inched forward, you're closer to the next level than you were when you started! That's progress! Be glad you set off with that original plan and celebrate that progress. Then decide if you want to revise the plan before you relaunch. You've Grown as a Writer At all levels of achievement, you've changed as a writer—you've gained experience and grown—all because you made a plan to level up and faithfully did the work. You wrote, polished, and shipped out content. You surged forward with a big effort to complete something challenging. You followed through with daily tasks in a constant drip that added up over time. You realized what didn't work for you and felt energized by what did. Questions for the Next-Level Writer When you first started this next-level writer process, you set one-month and three-month goals. As you head toward that third month, ask those same questions along the way to determine where you are now: Have you leveled up to where you thought you'd be? Did you exceed your goal? Did you fall short but realize you're closer than you were before? At the three-month mark, my friend,
[Ep 194] When a client brought me along to New York City, the airport shuttle bus dropped us off near Times Square and we had to find our way to the hotel. For a couple of Midwesterners who had never set foot in New York, this was magical. Getting around, however, was a tad mystifying—at first. As quickly as possible we had to evaluate our location and figure out our next step. We pulled out our phones and used an app that located where we were in order to guide us to our hotel. It helped us find our way to the next destinations, as well. The app located where we were and guided us to a restaurant that night and the publishing house the next day. Where Are You Now? Mall maps show a big overview of the layout of the place and mark the keystone stores. You look for a big red arrow pointing to where you stand labeled “You are here.” It helps you figure out your next steps so you take the right path based on your destination and your starting point. That's what we did in New York and that's what we can do as writers. We can take time to figure out where we are right now in the world of writing—we're kind of looking for a big red arrow labeled “You are here,” though it won't be as obvious as when we stand at that big kiosk in the mall. Nevertheless, with some reflection we can orient ourselves. It's time to evaluate. If you look at the writing and publishing landscape—and your writing life so far—where are you now? Orient Yourself with These 10 Questions The following questions will help you evaluate your writing world so you can orient yourself and identity your starting point. To help you articulate and solidify your thoughts, record your responses on the downloadable worksheet (below) or copy the questions into a journal answer them there: 1. Describe the writing you're doing. If you're writing and submitting poetry and short stories to literary magazines, your world looks different than if you're writing self-published thrillers, blogging in the travel market, or seeking traditional publishing of a book about cooking with kids. 2. Describe the writing world your work is part of. For instance, are you part of the self-publishing world, traditional publishing, blogging, or the literary market? 3. How long have you been here, doing this work? 4. What kinds of readers are here and how many are reading you? How are you known in this writing world? 5. What projects reflect your best work in this world? 6. What are you still figuring out (or have yet to figure out) to make the most of this writing world? What knowledge or skills do you need to fully inhabit this world? 7. How close are you to maxing out every possibility in this world of writing and at this level? Are you feeling stretched every day, or are you so experienced you're bored, just skating along as you wash-rinse-repeat? 8. Who has done exemplary work in this space? Who do you look to for inspiration or as a model for what‘s possible? The next question that may take some courage to say out loud or write in a journal: 9. Is this the world you want to continue to write in? For example, do you want to continue submitting to literary magazines? If so, great. You can work on leveling up within that world. It's smart to ask this question early in the process, because as you continue learning what it takes to level up, you want to be sure you're investing time and resources moving up in the world that you value—the writing world where you want to continue. The last question is this: 10. If the answer to the previous question was “No,” and this is no longer the world you want to write in, where do you want to write next? A specific goal might drive this, such as wanting to seek traditional publishing. Or someone's work may model the kind of writing you'd like to attempt next. Want to Shift to a New World? Are you done writing self-published thrillers and now you want to pursue literary fiction with a t...
