Thunderbolts #2 (1997)Our OG Thunderbolts discussion continues as the Thunderbolts adjust to their newly heroic personas in a battle against the Mad Thinker and his plan to suck knowledge out of Franklin Richards's brain. Thankfully, the T-Bolts are here to handle the situation even though they pretty much get their asses handed to them by Thinker's Gumby-looking android. Also, Mach-1 gets amorous, Citizen V tells a joke and the mayor of NYC strong-arms a grieving child into allowing the T-Bolts to inhabit the home of his deceased family. All this plus Shawn talks about the DEATH OF SUPERMAN and Jen expresses her frustration with BATMAN: H2SH!*** PROPER COMIC BOOK DISCUSSION STARTS AT 00:15:03 ***Promo: MARVEL STAR WARS: FROM EMPIRE TO JEDI (https://fireandwaterpodcast.com/show/empiretojedi/)Continue the conversation with Shawn and Jen on Twitter / Instagram / Facebook / Threads / Bluesky or email the show at worstcollectionever@gmail.comAlso, get hip to all of our episodes on YouTube in its own playlist! https://bit.ly/WorstCollectionEverYTDownload the podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and wherever you get your favorite shows. And we did it. We made it to the last issue of FF. What a fun little series. Hickman put together some compelling stories and weaved them through this and Fantastic Four. We should take a moment to think about what we learned from our review of this series, FF, over this past year or so. Time has been spent on this book, and beer has been drunk. That all being said, what has been read and what has been discussed. We started with everyone thinking that the Human Torch was dead, and the hiring of one Mr. Peter Parker aka Spider-Man. This changed the team dynamics and beat of the team. We started with the team at a low point, but we end with a stronger and more knowledgeable family. There was also the introduction of the Future Foundation. This is the team that has our boy Alex having something mover tangible than what happened to him in the New Warriors, but not by much. At least he was treated like he had intelligence and not just a paper weight. But the Future Foundation was a great idea. A group of smart kids solving the world's problems. They were a weird group of punks who brought something different to the conversation. THe ensemble could have been used more effectively at certain points, but it was not bad. We discovered that AIM (Advanced Idea Mechanics) having the bright idea to free The Wizard from prison and making him their leader proves that their ideas really aren't too advanced as they gave him back at the end of the series and asked for a do over. We learned that having Spider-man on your team is a great idea, while having Dr. Doom is an occasionally good idea if you can stand the Doomness of him. Also, inviting The Wizard, Diablo, The Mad Thinker and The High Evolutionary to stand with you for some out of the box thinking is a great way to to get betrayed and stabbed in the back when the chips are down by people that you just fed lunch to. A surprising number of issues deal with Black Bolt and The Inhumans interacting with the Supreme Intelligence and the Kree...we both found these issues, storylines and interactions to be boring, unwelcome and a distraction from important things, like what the Future Foundation kids are up to in their own title. Unfortunately, what they are often up to is standing off to a side, quietly observing the actions of other characters while storylines unfurl around them and their contributions amount to them being able to say that they were there too. Speaking of surprises, a surprising number of beings were turned into pets. Dr. Doom to a multiversal Reed Richards, a couple of multiversal Reed Richards' to a Supreme Intelligence, Johnny Storm to Annihilus, Annihilus to a resurrected Johnny Storm, and Galactus to a Franklin Richards. All in all it was a fun series and a worthwhile read, but it really shined when it dealt with the title holders of this series, the kids. Their developments, their growths, their failings and their foibles, their interactions and all the things that make them the foundation of the future. Episode 16 - Murdock and Marvel: 1978 This week Marvel starts to steady the ship, even as the Distinguished Competition is kneecapped by their corporate overlords. Prices go up! Prices go down! Great new companies sprout up! Established companies die! And as usual there are predictions about the impending death of comics. Welcome to 1978, everyone. Preshow Listener Mail from Zach Duane at Fan Fusion (https://www.phoenixfanfusion.com/) The Year in Comics Notable and Newsworthy Dr. Strange TV Movie: https://archive.org/details/dr.-strange-1978-movie Industry Trends Eagle Awards The Year in Marvel Chaos continues and a big name leaves...again. Events & Happenings New Titles New Characters Series Ending Who's in the Bullpen Marvel Comics in the 1970s by Eliot Borenstein (https://www.cornellpress.cornell.edu/book/9781501769368/marvel-comics-in-the-1970s/) ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Frank Miller The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #150-155, Marvel Two-In-One #37-39, Human Fly #9, Thor #271, Marvel Team-Up #73 and Fantastic Four Annual #13 Writing credits: Jim Shooter (150), Roger McKenzie/Shooter/Kane (151), McKenzie (152-155) Pencilers: Carmine Infantino (150, 152), Gil Kane (151), Gene Colan (153-154), Frank Robbins (155) The year begins with Daredevil looking for Killgrave. Meanwhile, another of New York's elite that was manipulated by Killgrave hires the Paladin to hunt down Killgrave as well. Eventually Daredevil and Paladin meet, briefly fight and part ways. After a bad dream, Murdock decides to come clean to Heather Glenn about his Daredevil secret and tell her that Maxwell Glenn is innocent and he's working to find the person responsible. While waiting for Heather to come home, he answers her phone and learns Maxwell Glenn has committed suicide in prison. When she arrives, he still comes clean and Heather blames Daredevil/Matt for everything including Maxwell Glenn's death. She then disappears. In the Marvel Two-In-One, Matt Murdock is called on to represent Ben Grimm as he's trial for causing too much damage in New York but leads to Daredevil briefly working for the Mad Thinker whom is out to get Grimm. However, with the Help of Vision and Yellowjacket, they are able to take down the villain. Knowing he can't fix his relationship with Heather, Daredevil orchestrates an intervention/meet-up between Debbie Harris and Foggy Nelson in Central Park – which leads to them deciding they are going to get married again. While in Central Park, Daredevil has another run-in with the Paladin. Next Daredevil is lured into a trap with Heather Glenn as the bait by Mister Hyde and Cobra. After a lengthy battle that includes the Billy Club being destroyed (again) and Hyde and Daredevil falling from the 12th floor of Glenn's apartment complex, Daredevil is captured. That leads to an epic final show-down in which Daredevil must take on the Jester, Gladiator, Hyde, Cobra (and briefly Paladin) who are under the influence of Killgrave. This will be our spotlight story for the week. The year ends with Daredevil experiencing mysterious headaches which is causing him trouble with his radar sense. We also learn Death-Stalker is working on a plan to get Daredevil. At the Storefront, Murdock interviews and hires a new assistant. During the walk to dinner, Murdock learns Black Widow is in town with the Avengers so he bails on Becky Blake and Foggy. As Daredevil, he invades Avengers mansion taking down Beast and Captain America and calls out Black Widow saying “She'll pay dearly” New Powers, Toys or Places New Supporting Characters New Villains This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil #154 September 1978 "Arena" Recap Why We Picked This Story The Takeaway The Strange Case of Jack Kirby Questions or comments We'd love to hear from you! Email us at questions@comicsovertime.com or find us on Twitter @comicsoftime. ------------------ THANKS TO THE FOLLOWING CREATORS AND RESOURCES Music: Our theme music is by the very talented Lesfm. You can find more about them and their music at https://pixabay.com/users/lesfm-22579021/. The Grand Comics Database: Dan uses custom queries against a downloadable copy of the GCD to construct his publisher, title and creator charts. Comichron: Our source for comic book sales data. Man Without Fear: Kuljit Mithra's Daredevil site contains a staggering collection of resources about our hero, including news, interviews and comic details. The American Comic Book Chronicles: Published by TwoMorrows, these volumes provide an excellent analysis of American comics through the years. Because these volumes break down comic history by year and decade they are a great place to get a basic orientation on what is happening across the comic industry at a particular point in time. Joshua and Jamie Do Daredevil: A fantastic podcast that does a deep-dive into Daredevil comics. This ran from 2018-2020, and covered most of the first volume of Daredevil, and was a fun way to get an in-depth look at each issue of Daredevil from 1-377. My Marvelous Year: This is a reading-club style podcast where Dave Buesing and friends chose important or interesting books from a particular year to read and discuss. This helped me remember some fun and crazy stories, and would be a great companion piece to Murdock and Marvel for those who want more comic-story-specific coverage. BOOKLIST The following books have been frequently used as reference while preparing summaries of the comic history segments of our show. Each and every one comes recommended by Dan for fans wanting to read more about it! Licari, Fabio and Marco Rizzo. Marvel: The First 80 Years: The True Story of a Pop-Culture Phenomenon. London: Titan Books, 2020. This book is sort of a mess, as the print quality is terrible, and Titan doesn't even credit the authors unless you check the fine print. It's like this was published by Marvel in the early 60s! But the information is good, and it is presented in an entertaining fashion. So its decent, but I would recommend you see if you can just borrow it from the library instead of purchasing. Wells, John. American Comic Book Chronicles: 1960-1964. Raleigh: Two Morrows, 2015. Not cheap, but a fantastic series that is informative and fun to read. Wright, Bradford. Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001. This is the revised edition. Marvel Year By Year: A Visual History. New York: DK Publishing, 2022. The academic in my rails at using information from any work that doesn't have an author credit, but this is a decent (if very surface) look at each year in the history of Timely / Marvel from 1939 to 2021. Cowsill, Alan et al. DC Comics Year by Year: A Visual History. New York: DK Publishing, 2010. Because its nice to occasionally take a peek at what the Distinguished Competition is up to. Dauber, Jeremy. American Comics: A History. New York, W.W. Norton & Company, 2022. An excellent, relatively compact history of the domestic comic industry from its 19th century origins through to recent 21st century developments. An excellent successor to Bradford Wright's Comic Book Nation.

I had a wonderful conversation on this episode with Julius Spates, The Mad Thinker. Julius grew up with music and wanted to share it with everyone. So, at a young age, he had an idea to throw a party and get 500 people to attend. The party exceeded expectations, with over 600 people in attendance. With his love of music and his sister's love of travel, they created Mi Casa Holiday based on House Music. Mi Casa Holiday combines a unique travel experience to extraordinary locations with exceptional accommodations steeped in rich history and culture, music from a host of international DJs, and events. 2023 is their 15th Anniversary in Playa Del Carmen - Tulum, Mexico (tickets are on sale now). Julius is more than just a DJ; he is a businessman, curator of travel experiences, and producer. The character of Dr. Gonzo in the book and film Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is based on a real person: a one-time military airman...turned Baptist missionary...turned legal aid attorney...turned Los Angeles County Sheriff's candidate...turned author...turned missing person. This is the story of the intriguing life and mysterious, unsolved disappearance of Oscar Zeta Acosta. We'll take a trip back to Los Angeles in the 1970s that features psychedelics, Chicano civil rights activism--and a lone, self-described brown buffalo wandering the halls of justice. Paris' lifelong search for her family's genealogical records leads her to investigate the reason they are missing: the lynching of a 41-year-old African American man named George Hughes in 1930. Accused of assaulting a white woman in Sherman, located within Grayson County, Texas, George never gets his day in court. Instead, locals burn down the courthouse with Hughes trapped inside and later carry out a postmortem lynching. Special guest Melissa Thiel, a public historian and a native of Grayson County, joins Paris later in the episode to discuss her efforts in getting an historical marker placed at the county courthouse to memorialize this significant crime and to discuss artifacts from this case that she's uncovered in her own research. This episode provides little-known background information on George Hughes, his accusers, and the town of Sherman during the Jim Crow era. Please sign Melissa Thiel's historical marker petition at shermanriot.org and visit the Historical Marker for the 1930 Sherman Riot Facebook group for updates and more information about this true crime. If you like this episode, please subscribe, rate us with 5 stars on iTunes or your favorite podcatcher, and consider supporting this one-woman show at Patreon. Do you like dinosaurs! That is not a question, it is a statement! YOU....LIKE......DINOSAURS!!! OKAY! You are a kid with some money! You are at a mall with your bestest friend! There is a food court, a toy store, and a DINOSAUR EXHIBIT! What can make this any better????? How about having the writer of the New Warriors Continuity Conundrum,Corey (@NewWarriorsTalk) on to help us out! Like I said....BEST! DAY! EVER! The best thing!!!!The most wonderful thing!!!! Your story is being told by Judy Bogdanove and drawn by Jon Bogdanove. Is that cool or what? It is like beating up a dino-Mr. Fantastic! But what are we doing here? Watching some kids play, having fun, kicking some booty...or cleaning their rooms? Why we are doing all of those things, and we are having a lot of fun doing it! Many people will tell you that when you are fighting dinosaurs, you should always lead with your right foot. Actually, nobody says that, but what people do say is that Jack fighting a dino is awesome! What about villains....do we have any cool villains....? Well, sure...I guess....you could say that. I mean, I guess that the Mad Thinker is a well known villain, and he has a pedigree. You could also say that Jack is a villain in training. Speaking of double vision, check out there being two Franklins. How did that happen? What is going on? Why does our sweet little boy have a duplicate? Just because we want to leave you in a little bit of suspense, we will not tell you what is happening, but we will leave you with a couple of images of him being eaten.....that should make you afraid. The Indians face a Royals team that is normally pretty terrible, but thanks to Covid is down nine players and in even worse shape than most for the start of the year. The Royals are down most of their rotation, and several starters which should mean a sweep for the Indians, as the Royals were already one of the worst teams in baseball. We do make a correction to our 40 man talk, thanks to the Mad Thinker. We talk about expanded playoffs, which mean it would be shocking if the Indians don't make it. We also talk about the Betts extension and how it just goes to show Lindor's Indians days are numbered. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Marvel Two-In-One #38 (1978)We are back from a brief holiday break with a predictably ridiculous look at MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE with The Thing and Daredevil. The Thing is in jail because he’s raging rock monster. Matt Murdock is awful at his lawyer duties in his defense of Ben so its up to Daredevil to get The Thing cleared. Daredevil then beats up Tom Atkins from HALLOWEEN III and accomplishes nothing. Thankfully, Ben just breaks out of prison because he’s super-strong and confronts the culprit, the Mad Thinker, in his sewer lair. Robot violence ensues and at the end of it all, Ben and Daredevil are pretty much going to die because they stink.Continue the conversation with Shawn and Jen on Twitter @angryheroshawn and @JenStansfield and email the show at worstcollectionever@gmail.com

Guest-Starring Noddy Holder As Thor Hello, and welcome to episode 299(!) of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. This week, we're encountering one more Iron Man than expected, as an attack on the Baxter Building leads to an unexpected take-off, a bold-faced lie, a tiny Quinjet, an over-hyped eye, a confusing flashback, and the return of our favourite acronym in comics - the QUASI-MOtivational Destruct Organ! Marv Wolfman, John Buscema, Joe Sinnott, Janice Cohen, Jim Novak, Jim Shooter, and Dave Cockrum present Fantastic Four #202 - There's One Iron Man Too Many. And there's one comic too many, as we jump into Spidey Super Stories #38, in which a subway train-jacking punning Mad Thinker has to be brought down by the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man... assuming he can find somewhere to change, of course! The Torch is dead, but he's an android so how does that work? It's the best Mad Thinker story ever as Toro and the Torch return.Affiliate link included.Transcript below:Graham: How can an android be dead? Get ready to flame on as we take a look at The Torch by Mike Carey, straight ahead. Announcer:Welcome to the Classy Comics podcast where we search for the best comics in the universe. From Boise Idaho, here is your host Adam Graham.Host:Most people know Johnny Storm of the Fantastic Four as the Human Torch. However, he was not the first character in Marvel Comics to bear that name. Actually, the original Human Torch, presented first on the front cover of Marvel Mystery Comics number 1, was an android. An android named Jim Hammond. During the Golden Age of comics, he fought crime in a wide variety of different Marvel magazines and he also made a brief comeback along with Namor and Captain America in the mid-1950s. The 1970 series, the invaders told of how Namor, Captain America, and the human torch along with other heroes, such as the Union Jack Nazis during World War Two. The torch came out of the Avengers Invaders mini-series which featured the death of the Human Torch. However, as the villain of this story, the Mad Thinker, points out how does an android die? During the Golden Age, the Human Torch had a sidekick known as Toro and this is been fleshed out so his full name is Tom Raymond who also had flame powers and he joined forces with the Torch in his fight against evil. Tom Raymond died but when Bucky Barnes got control of the Cosmic Cube for a while, he undid that. Unfortunately for Toro, his wife had moved on and he has no place in the world as the story opens. Both Toro and the body of the Human Torch are set to be examined by the Mad Thinker who has been hired by Advanced Idea Mechanics (AIM) in order to build a weapon and his idea involves building a weapon involving flame and so he has the Torch's body stolen and kidnaps Toro but he's got his own planes and mind. I'll go ahead and discuss this kind of in segments. The main characters of this, Toro is an old character. He's got a lot of reason to be sympathetic. He's kind of lost in this new world and doesn't really know his place in it with nowhere to go and just nothing to do. You do feel for the guy. At the same time, while his present is very uncertain, what he thought he knew about his past is challenged. He definitely goes on a journey and I think at the start of the story I didn't much like him but as the story goes on, we really get to know him better and also see the type of the impact he makes on the Torch. The Torch, is part of the experimentation by the Mad Thinker, has many of the emotions and values, sort of, thought centres in his programming neutralized and so he actually starts out when he awakens, being just really a machine and he has to really rediscover what it was that made him seem so human-like as the Human Torch. And as the book goes on, really the relationship between Toro and the Torch becomes a lot more interesting. I also have to say I love the Mad Thinker in this. He is just a superb villain. I don't think I've ever seen him this well written. He's devious, he's got plans within plans and he even though he's at first in the early part of the book, he's hired by Advanced Ideas Mechanics and later on he is hired by a group of Nazis, who are running an underground city where the third rock continues to thrive, dominated by android citizens in New Berlin but the Mad Thinker really has his own agenda and there's an intelligence, a cunning and a ruthlessness about him that makes him formidable as a villain. I think he's almost written as practically Dr Octopus standards though not quite that over the top in the ego department but really he is just incredibly well written.
Forgetful Hypno-Specs Hello, and welcome to episode 280 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. This week, we're heading to the Mad Thinker's sewer hideout to discover why this nefarious villain wants to take over The Vision and enslave mankind. Or something. Only Daredevil, The Thing, Yellowjacket, and Eugene Everett can stop him. Which is good, because even Paste Pot Pete would make a better mankind enslavement overlord... Roger Slifer, Ron Wilson, Pablo Marcos, George Roussos, Peter Iro, and Archie Goodwin present Marvel Two-in-One #39. Featuring Daredevil's tighty-whiteys, Yellowjacket's thighs, the Avengers Coffin, a fake psychic, a not-that-fake psychic, a bunch of robot clones, a pair of completely blank metal spectacles, and the wrong Omnibus. No Such Thing As The X-Factor Hello, and welcome to episode 252 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. This week, we're returning to the many, many subplots in progress in the main title, with Fantastic Four #182. Between revolution in the Negative Zone, child abduction in Whisper Hill, spousal impersonation in the Baxter Building, and the removal of as many extraneous characters as the writers can get away with, this is one heck of a full issue. The fullness starts with the credit box, which lists Archie Goodwin, Len Wein, Jim Shooter, and Bill Mantlo as writers, alongside Sal Buscema (who we really like, despite the evidence to the contrary) and Joe Sinnott. They come together to present the misadventures of the Mildly Disturbed Thinker, and the long-awaited return of... ZANTE! I avsnittet hör du låten "Theme for The Mad Thinker" av Dr Frankenstein, nedladdad från freemusicarchive.org (CC BY 3.0).
In this jam packed episode, we present a villainous triple threat: Egghead, The Mad Thinker, and The Puppet Master! Discussion includes super science, true evil in the Marvel Universe, and ants.
Dr. Strange shows up and uses the team as a distraction to save the world, but leaves them stranded in Africa, so Black Panther takes them to his place where he faces off against the Man-Ape, and then they finally make it home only to see Hawkeye ditch his bow and arrows to become the new Goliath. That's a whole bunch of dumb.
Welcome back to Baxter Building, the podcast reading through the first 416 issues of the Fantastic Four! Today, Graeme McMillan and Jeff Lester are there when the legend ends, covering issues 95-102 of the Fantastic Four, the last by the mighty Jack Kirby. Join us to see how it all ends with guest appearances by The Monocle, World War III, The Monster from the Lost Lagoon, Neil Armstrong, The Mad Thinker, The Inhumans, a bunch of guys with pumpkin masks, Magneto, Sub-Mariner, so much more and yet somehow so much less. The Secret Origin Of Phil Hello, and welcome to episode 153 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. We're dipping our toes back into the world of Marvel Team-Up, with issue #5. The Thing is the guest-star for this issue, stepping forward in his own right for the first time. Can you tell that Marvel Two-In-One is on the horizon? This titanic team-up also features two (count 'em, two!) villains, the nefarious Mad Thinker and the strangely sympathetic Puppet Master. After a decade of radioactive clay, the time has come to discover his secret origin. Joining us for this team-up is Fantasticast artist Mike Georgiou. Creator of Steve and Bob, and Elemental Micah, Mike is the owner of a proud beard and a fluffy tablecloth. He's also the creator of our wonderful show artwork, and we're very pleased to welcome him back to the show. Check out his work at mikedraws.co.uk or follow @mikedraws on twitter. Enchantress tricks Hercules into wrestling the Avengers. When he snaps out of it, his daddy gives him a one year timeout on Earth. Since Herc is stuck there anyway, he decides to help the team face off against the Mad Thinker and his Triumvirate of Terror (more like "Terrible"). Black Widow gets conned into helping SHIELD. Cap takes off for a while. And, for as little as they do, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver may as well disappear too.
Welcome back to Baxter Building, the podcast reading through the first 416 issues of the Fantastic Four! Today, Graeme McMillan and Jeff Lester talk about issues 25-33 of the Fantastic Four, all by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, with much discussion of Diablo and Dragon Man, The Thing in a motorboat vs. The Hulk operating a subway car, a fresh new take on The Mad Thinker, the father issues of Sue Storm, the middle initial of George R.R. Martin, and much, much more! Show notes eagerly await you at waitwhatpodcast.com, we welcome your comments and questions at WaitWhatPodcast@gmail.com, and we invite you to look out for us on Twitter, Tumblr, and Patreon!
Lurgi Strikes Britain. Well, Manchester... Hello, and welcome to episode 110 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. This week on the show, Andy's been hit with a terrible cold, and it sort of shows... However, this doesn't stop him from teaming up once more with Steve and tackling the final Lee/Kirby Mad Thinker story. Can a good Mad Thinker issue be produced in the dying days of the run? And is it mere coincidence that Steve has been watching lots of Battlestar Galactica in the lead-up to recording this episode? Alex Callejo is back with a powerful new mix with inspirational messages and the beats to back them up. This is just a little taste of how the 3 Degrees / 5 Magazine party benefiting typhoon victims in the Philippines at Chicago's Primary sounded like earlier this month. The party raised funds destined to Doctors without Borders, and featured the likes of Roy Davis Jr., Julius the Mad Thinker, FLX, Monna, Big Sexy, and Jeremiah Seraphine. Here's what the invite looked like: "Join us this Wednesday as we donate our time and positive energy to people who need it dearly – those effected by Typhoon Haiyan. According to the BBC, more than 11.5 Million people have been effected by this super storm. That is roughly twice the population of Chicago. It is a disaster of staggering proportions. A few weeks ago, Czarina Mirani of 5 Magazine posted an appeal on Facebook to organize an event that would benefit those effected. We were moved by her instinct to try to help those in need and we felt compelled to donate the proceeds of a night to this worthy cause. Soon after offered to help, Roy Davis Jr., a DJ who needs no introduction, graciously donated his talent and time to the event. Longtime 3 Degrees member, Alex Callejo, will also be spinning and donating his time to support his fellow Filipinos. Also, Tonic from the Chicago Tribe b-boy crew, herself a Filipina is donating her time as an event host. Please join us on Wednesday at Primary and donate as much as you can spare at the door. 100% of the cover charge will be donated to Doctors Without Borders. Click here for event details. 3 Degrees co-founder Jeremiah Seraphine has donated in the past to Doctors Without Borders, and recommended this charity to be the benefactor for the event."
Happy Birthday Us Hello and welcome to the latest Fantasticast episode. Steve has just turned 30, and Andy has just turned a little-bit more, so it's celebration time. Or at least it would be if we hadn't recorded 2 weeks in advance and forgotten when this was due to be released... This week, we look at Fantastic Four #37, as the team head into space to exact bloody vengeance upon the party responsible for the death of Dr Storm. Then, in Strange Tales #131, Johnny and Ben face off against the Mad Thinker, who has clearly been watching The Dam Busters. If you're looking at the image and thinking 'gosh, that looks different', then you're right. Michael Georgiou - http://www.mikedraws.co.uk/ - has created a wonderful cover image for the show that you'll see rolled out across the websites, facebook and twitter pages very soon. Then, Samuel Savage took a shot at creating an episode cover image, so we thought we'd use it. Thanks to Mike for his amazing talent, and to Sam for the episode graphic. Reports from Mexico are equivocal in their expression, but not in their message: for those who went to this year's Mi Casa Holiday it's "Wow!", and for those who didn't it's "I won't miss it next year!" Earlier this month, a considerable contingent of the house music world descended on Mexico's bohemian Playa del Carmen, situated on the Yucatan Peninsula surrounded by Mayan ruins, palm trees, and breathtaking beaches. The annual event is 4 days of activities designed to bring this community of like-minded people together in a unique way and to build within it a strong bond that continues long after the party is over. This year, creator Julius the Mad Thinker, his sister Jennifer Hurst and co-organizer Keith Evans teamed up with innumerable Global Soul industry names to make the fourth season finale the best one ever. These include Wepa's Joanne Jimenez and Antonio Ocasio, Osunlade, Master Kev, David Sabat, United Music's Hallex M and Abel Rogers, Dive's DJ ALA and Mikeytown, Alex Callejo, Uhuru Africa's Adam Gibbons, Lady Alma, Ramon Rawsoul, Lego, AQBT and many many more. Here's what some had to say: "Best weekend of my life!" Master Kev "Words can not express how unique and fun this trip was" Househead "I let out tears of joy" Deborah Conton "Yes indeed PARADISE!" Sabine Blazin Julius's thinking pays off. He chills with fellow Chicagoan Alex Callejo... and sports his Chihuahua T-Shirt. Niiice Unfortunately, we could not make this year's Mi Casa (although we tried) but we join the chorus of all those who did not go in saying "we won't miss next year's!" It is now our goal and objective. And to do our part from this side of the Pacific to spread the love, we're featuring this week one of our all time favorite Julius the Mad Thinker mixes titled "Don't Be Afraid". Here's the tracklist: 1. George Levin - Late Discovery 2. Shannon Harris - ATEM RA 3. Pirahnahead Feat. Diviniti - Believe In Me 4. Reel People - It Will Be (Ezel & Kyoto Jazz Massive Mix) 5. Omar - Lay it Down (Andre Lodemann Remix) 6. Joey Negro pres. Akabu - Another World (Andre Lodemann mix) 7. Manoo - Kodjo 8. The Thinker's Fantastical Predictions Hello and welcome to a very special episode of The Fantasticast! Not only are we celebrating half a year's worth of the show (we're aiming for 26 a year), but we're also celebrating the birthdays of both Andrew and Stephen, born only 24 hours (and a handful of years) apart. Not that we realised this when recording the show, but I thought I'd put some metaphorical balloons up anyway! So, this time around, we get to grip with The Mad Thinker and his Awesome Android in Fantastic Four #15. Steve's been going on for weeks how much he dislikes the Thinker, so the contents of this episode may just surprise you. And then it's over to Strange Tales #109 for the threat of the Sorceror and the contents of Pandora's Box. And with a villain called the Sorceror, you just know we've gone overboard with the Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy music... We also cover our most recent e-mails, but we need some more, so please do send your feedback, thoughts, views, comments, abuse, dirty jokes, and requests for help in moving money out of Nigeria to: fantastic4podcast@gmail.com
[I]t's official: Julius the Mad Thinker will be performing in Manila on Saturday, January 28 at TIME. In our opinion, this is the year's "must-see" event. Few DJs have an effect on an audience the way Julius the Mad Thinker does. I first heard about Julius when I ran across his name in 2004 on the site UndagroundArchives.com, the authoritative guide to New York City's house music scene (today no longer operational), run by Donna Ward (a.k.a. Fotochick). The site hosted the annual Choice Awards celebrating the scene's top players, from artists, DJs, and producers, to clubs, record labels, events, and reporters. That year, Julius had been recognized as Best Emerging Talent, and Donna wrote about a great interview she had with him and described him as smart and mature. The following year, I was invited to attend the 4th Choice Awards in NYC. Everyone who was anyone was there: Danny Krivit, Quentin Harris, Jovonn, Kevin Hedge and Josh Milan (Blaze), Lisa Shaw, Anane, Stephanie Cook, Jada, and Andre Harris, to name a few. Awardees included Louie Vega, 718 Sessions, Deep House Page, Shelter, Roots, Bruce Tatum (Time Out NY), Cordell Mcclary. I was invited to present the award for Best DJ International, and the winner was Jojo Flores for the 4th year in a row (someone I had just met in Manila the year prior in 2004). Jojo was in South Africa at the time and his buddy E-Man accepted the award on his behalf (someone I met along with Jojo here). To say that being on stage in front of all these stars--I had only read about up until that point--was surreal would be the understatement of the year! Julius may very well have been in the crowd that night. In 2009, I was going to visit Chicago for the first time with Ines--who had lived there before I met her, and a DJ friend Joe DiPadova, who was going out with Ines' best friend years ago, recommended that I look up Julius once there. Joe was at the time living in Montreal and working with Jojo Flores. I remembered that Jojo was at the time the Montreal resident of a group of DJs called 3Degrees Global, a group co-founded by Julius the Mad Thinker 10-years ago. Once in Chi-town, I reached out to Julius and he recommended we meet at Evilolive (a palindrome). We finally met and he introduced us to Jamie326, Gene Hunt, and many of the people organizing that after-hour industry night. How's THAT for 3 degrees of separation?! The next time we saw Julius was in Manila about a month later. It was a bit of a surprise and his first time there. He came to attend a friend's wedding along with Tiesto. We hung out for about a week and got to know him much better. He came to our night at the Mandarin Oriental MUSIC & WINE, we took him to M Cafe, and he performed at Embassy on his last night. He even recorded a mix at my place that he ended up featuring on [MUSIC & WINE Radio]. (You can scroll down to find it.) Julius recording the mix "Traffic" at my Makati City pad. Also seen dancing, Channel St Claire Julius invited us to participate in the 2010 Winter Music Conference in Miami (me as DJ and Ines as co-host) at the Mi Casa pool-party opening the annual conference. It's amazing how many people in the global house scene we met in the matter of a few days. We have been trying to find the right time ever since to bring Julius back to Manila. Well, the stars are finally aligned and Julius will at long last be back in town to perform, this time at the city's number one dance club TIME. The Mi Casa pool-party at WMC 2010. Elian Habayeb, Julius the Mad Thinker, Zepherin Saint (Tribe), ALA (Dive San Diego), Hallex M (United Music), Keith Evan (House Society), and Nathan Adams (Tribe). With the hopes of adding the Philippines to his roster, Julius, along with hundreds of music enthusiasts are preparing for the incredibly explosive 4th annual Mi Casa Es Su Casa Holiday season to start March at the WMC 2012 in Miami and ending October 4-7 in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. This is the Thinker's annual birthday celebration, not yet published on his Soundcloud page. It's titled Celebrate and it's a real banger. Here's probably some of what you can expect on Saturday the 28th. Click link to access the invite, enjoy the sounds, and here's the tracklist: 0:00 - 1. Incognito - Freedom To Love (Original Mix) - Reel People 6:49 - 2. KemeticJust feat. Terrance Downs - I Got Life (DJ Spinna's Galactic Soul Vocal) - NDATL Muzik 14:20 - 3. It's simple enough. There's “Bro Code” and “Show Code”. What's the line that separates the 2? Ok… Maybe it's not that simple. Let's call TK1's mom while live recording and ask her! This one was created intentionally as a follow up to Soulful House Vol. 4, done back in 2008, which I still love to listen to. Lots of heavenly joints on here, LOTS of gems. BUT, my favorite has to be the Leon Ware track "On The Beach" with the ATJAZZ Love Soul touch. Tracklisting: 1 - Si Tew feat Pete Simpson - Need To Grow (Yoruba Soul Remix) 2 - Rami Deejay feat. Keely Timlin - Burn Burn (Original Mix) 3 - Leon Ware - On The Beach (Atjazz Love Soul Remix) 4 - Mathew Bandy feat Josh Milan (Frankie Feliciano Ricanstruction Vocal Mix) 5 - Marc Evans & N'Dinga Gaba - My Heart Remembers (N'Dinga's Main Mix) 6 - Bossru feat. [rating:4/5] MAJOR SPOILERS POLL OF THE WEEK We’re right in the middle of a seasonal change, and as the final leaves slip off the bough and nature prepares to slumber, it brings up the question – what is your favorite season, and more importantly, why? VOTE MAJOR SPOILERS DISCUSSION: Empowered Empowered is an original English-language manga written and illustrated by Adam Warren. Described by Warren as a “sexy superhero comedy”, Empowered began to take shape in 2004 with a series of commissioned sketches of a damsel in distress; these illustrations became the basis for short comic stories that helped develop the characters for the Empowered series. I first met Tommy Bones in New York City in 2005 at the Undaground Archives Choice Awards (the Oscars of the House Music industry) where I was invited to present the award for Best DJ International (the award that year went to Montreal's own Jojo Flores for the fourth time). Tommy that year accepted the Best Emerging Talent award (an award received by Julius the Mad Thinker the previous year). I got to meet him and he handed me his latest mix on CD. Ever since, I have been listening to his epic sets available on his website and we've remained in touch. Tommy has also developed into a respected producer putting out some really sublime tracks you may have heard me play at M&W. This week, we proudly feature Tommy's Winter Music Conference 2010 Mix recorded a few months ago. Here's also an insightful article on Tommy Bones featured in Chicago's 5 Magazine and written by Czarina Mirani: "I used to see Tommy Bones at the many New York clubs I visited in the last 5 or 6 years. He was that unmistakable white kid with the huge back pack, big smile, and always made you wonder if he was old enough to be at the spot. I then started hearing his name from my dance teacher, who always made sure she rocked one of his mix CDs for her House classes. Growing up and immersing himself in the underground party scene both in his hometown in Connecticut and in nearby New York, Tommy would often be the only white kid in a scene dominated by blacks and hispanics. By the time he learned how to spin at the age of 14, he was heavy into the culture as both a DJ and a dancer. Explaining why he is known as "the dancer's DJ," he explains that "the dancers in New York are the ones that support me the most." His mixes have been transported by them to other countries via the classes they taught. That's why by the time he played a gig in Japan in 2004 "every dancer there knew my name!" Tommy has a very old-school do-it-yourself self promotion ethic that is refreshing at a time when everyone now relies on the internet. Guaranteed if you've gone to any NYC clubs in the past decade, there has to have been a point when Tommy handed you one of his mixes. "DJs and producers within my scene might look at me like I'm crazy! What they're not realizing is not only does it make me happy to hand someone a CD and hear that they love it, but I'm reaching out to more people than they are! For one CD, there might be 5 people listening to it at the same time. Or it might end up in a restaurant, or a clothing store... The Ralph Lauren store on South Beach has my whole collection and that's all they play there!" By 2003, music production was inevitable, and his material can be found on record labels Kingstreet, Wave, Ransom Note, Lionimusic, Real Tone, Nufaze, and Defected. He also just finished two remixes "Mahwuelele" for Mzee and "Keep it Rockin" for vocalist Wunmi. His positive energy is infectious and when asked what to expect from his upcoming set, he says "when I'm feeling the music I'll leave the DJ booth and go out in the middle of the floor and dance! I want to feel the crowd's energy. I want to be in the middle of the dancefloor so I can shake people's hands. My goal is to get out there and make you smile." One click on button below =) We've been in touch with Brent Crampton for years and finally met him in person in Miami at the Winter Music Conference - Mi Casa Pool Party. We are very proud to bring you this exclusive [M&W Radio] set from an amazing artist who is properly holding it down in the Midwest. Multi-award winning DJ, including Best DJ in 2006-2008 for the Omaha Entertainment & Arts Awards, Scion/Imeem Breakthrough Emerging Artist in 2006, named one of Omaha's top artists of the year in 2009 by The Reader and recognized as a NextAid.org artist, Brent Crampton has been pushing the boundaries of music and culture throughout the Midwest. His sound centers around the deep house and global soul movement, yet defies genres, dropping anything from underground disco, conscious hip hop, party rocking classics, post punk and world flavors such as afrobeat, samba and bhangra. Most importantly, his music has a message: Bringing people together – connecting through music – releasing in dance. Crampton founded the global soul party by the name of "loom" in 2006. It has established itself as the longest running dance party in Omaha and has had international guest DJs such as Kevin Yost, jojoflores, Sabo, FLX and Julius the Mad Thinker. Essentially, Crampton created a soulful and multicultural dance party in a middle-tier Midwestern city that previously had none. His impression has been made throughout North America and beyond, having performed in places such as London, Mexico, NYC, Chicago, Miami, Montreal, Las Vegas, Boston and Hawaii. He's promoted shows or played alongside talent such as King Britt, The Rapture DJs (The Rapture), Todd Fink & Jacob Thiele of The Faint, Alton Miller, Colette (OM), Sierra Leones Refugee Allstars, Woody McBride, Josh One and Tim Sweeney (DFA). In all, his driving ambitions have made him one of the most sought after and active DJs in the area. “There is a healing power in music - and I want to get that out to the people,” says Crampton.
