A researcher thinks teachers rewarding kids with lollies is a sweet idea. Sarah Cowie, is an associate professor of psychology at the University of Auckland and spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
A Northland parent claimed teachers at her son's first school routinely rewarded children with chocolate and lollies, sparking debate about whether this is a good idea. Health Ministry guidelines say schools should not serve sweets or chocolate at all, and concerns have been raised about the health impacts. Auckland University professor Boyd Swinburn says there could probably be better ways to reward kids for good behaviour. "Plenty of schools have done it, plenty of schools do say they're providing the best environment for kids, they're being institutional role models - and they'll find ways to do it." Should teachers give children lollies or chocolates for good behaviour? Health ministry guidelines say schools shouldn't serve confectionery at all. Some principals agree, but others say sweets are fine. Education correspondent John Gerritsen reports.
Are low sugar lollies actually healthier… or just clever marketing? This week on The Nutrition Couch, Susie and Leanne take a deep dive into the booming “better-for-you” confectionery trend and unpack whether these fibre-based, low-sugar lollies are genuinely a smarter choice — or simply another ultra-processed product wearing a health halo. With brands like Fun Day dominating supermarket checkouts, are we being lured into a false sense of security? But that’s not all. Leanne shares compelling new research (January 2026) linking body fat distribution — not just body weight — to brain structure, cognitive performance and neurological disease risk. The findings raise important questions about muscle mass, abdominal fat, rapid weight loss, and long-term brain health. Plus: A practical review of convenient pre-prepared vegetables and whether they’re worth the price The truth about Aldi’s lower carb white bread and why not all “low carb” options are created equal A bigger conversation about ultra-processed foods and health star ratings This episode cuts through marketing noise and brings you back to what truly matters for long-term health, metabolic function and cognitive protection. If you’ve ever stood in the lolly aisle wondering “Is this actually better?” — this one’s for you.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A few years ago, we had a bunch of stories about Santa parades getting cancelled because of red tape and traffic management. NZTA was the Grinch that stole Christmas. And guess what, two years in, despite a change of Government, despite a Minister and Ministry of Regulation, despite the road cone tip line, the Grinch is back. This time it's Piopio. Population around 500. Rural. Between Hamilton and New Plymouth. SH3. They want to close the road on the main which is their usual route. It's close from 5:30pm to 8pm. Two and half hours. Kids get to see Santa's sleigh riding through town. Lollies would presumably be thrown from floats driven behind Utes - or do they still throw lollies, or would you be fined for hitting somebody? Anyway, you get the idea. We've all been to a Santa parade - great fun when you're a kid. Guess how much it was going to cost them because of the Grinch's traffic rules and the resulting bill for traffic management costs? It would normally cost around $1000. This year? $10,000-$14,000. If you're organising a Santa parade or an ANZAC parade or community event, don't worry, on the NZTA website you'll find a helpful guide: the New Zealand Guide to Temporary Traffic Management. It's 88 pages long. That's not the only problem. The first sentence of the foreword (yes, there's a foreword to this magnum opus) outlines the problem. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is committed to Road to Zero - a safer Aotearoa New Zealand where no one is killed or injured on our roads. Now, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is an absolute pipe dream and will never happen. Aiming for that outcome is mad. What you get as a result is 88 pages of rubbish and a $14k bill to get Santa in a sleigh for two hours. The organisers say they'll have to do a Christmas meet and greet but no actual parade. Christmas is the season to be jolly and the season for giving. NZTA is giving Grinch vibes and a bad attitude. Whether it's working from home, health and safety, or curriculum changes, there's a wall of bureaucracy that seems impenetrable. A change of government and direction doesn't seem to change anything.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It was a memorable afternoon with the Wests Tigers showing how far the team has come in the past 12 months. But, sadly, in 15 minutes, the Cowboys managed to wrestle the game away from us at a sold-out Leichhardt Oval.On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Joel is joined by Nick, Zac, and Jordan to look back at the many highs and lows of Sunday afternoon's game. Yes, of course, Jordan contemplates whether he has put a curse on the club after so confidently tipping the boys to win three straight games last year.Well, it's now the end of 2025, and that mini streak still hasn't happened. With only two games left in the 2025 season for the Wests Tigers, we will have to wait until next year! See what Jordan has to say for himself on this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast. Some other talking points from the 6-point loss to the Cowboys include:Why do we tend to struggle in big event games? How much of an impact was it losing Adam Doueihi to injury? How the Cowboys showed up to playOur continued struggle in the red zone with our attackSome of the key moments from the game are also up for discussion, including the remarkable Wests Tigers try that was so akin to Pat Richards' Grand Final try twenty years earlier. There's a discussion about the continued impressive performance of Taylan May, the 'Rocks and Diamonds' that is Brent Naden, and concerns about our lack of bench strength as well.As always, heaps of Wests Tigers Podcast Forum 'One Word' submissions feature as well, and we take a look at the big news that the club has secured tens of millions of dollars in funding for an upgrade of Campbelltown Stadium. It's not a post-victory edition of the pod, but we hope you enjoy our take on an afternoon at Leichhardt that was oh so close to being a classic! What sequel would you actually want to see? The team dives into the madness of fake Titanic trailers, forgotten cult classics like Porky’s, and even a few shows we wish would come back (looking at you, Fleabag). Plus, we hear some of the most creative and downright brutal parenting threats, from tossing lollies out the window to actually removing bedroom doors. The end of an era for one of our most iconic sweets. Levin confectioner RJ's has discontinued production of Jaffas, due to poor sales. The orange-coated balls of chocolate were previously produced by Cadbury in Dunedin and have been on our shelves for almost a century. Mike Hutcheson, former Managing Director of Saatchi & Saatchi, told Mike Hosking that a competitor would pick up Jaffas in a heartbeat. He says it's not just a sweet, it's a symbol, and it's possible to turn it around and make Jaffas a brand that means something. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Police investigating the Auckland City Mission meth lollies are now looking into claims someone is trying to sell one of the class A sweets online. Earlier today, they'd located 29 of the sweets that contain potentially lethal doses of methamphetamine. The lollies were unwitting put in Auckland City Mission food parcels received by 428 families. The faux sweets are labelled as pineapple flavoured and branded as Rinda confectionery, they were donated to the Mission. Helen Robinson, from the Auckland City Mission speaks to Lisa Owen.
A drug researcher suspects small blocks of meth wrapped to look like pineapple lollies may be linked to Mexican cartels. Illicit Drug Monitoring System at Massey University head Dr Chris Wilkins spoke to Guyon Espiner.
Auckland police have recovered more meth-laced lollies overnight, and are investigating a report someone tried to sell one. The fake Rinda pineapple sweets were donated to Auckland City Mission - which unwittingly distributed them in food parcels. Police have retrieved another 13 since yesterday, bringing the total to 29. Massey University's Professor Chris Wilkins suspects Mexican cartels may have been behind this incident. "The Mexican cartels are particularly innovative and have expertise in smuggling, because they have been, for many decades, transporting drugs across the borders of the US." The Auckland City Mission is racing to contact hundreds of food parcel recipients, after chunks of methamphetamine disguised as pineapple lollies were found in food packs it distributed. Three people have needed hospital treatment after tasting the lollies, including two children. There are fears that more of these lollies are circulating in the community, and a police investigation is underway, Lucy Xia reports.
It's unclear how far meth-laced lollies could have been taken across Auckland. The Rinda brand pineapple lollies were donated to Auckland City Mission, and given out in food parcels. Drug Foundation Executive Director Sarah Helm says each lolly has about 300 doses of meth. She says even a single suck is dangerous. "There's still a range of effects, so you're likely to still feel an effect - possibly still needing to seek medical attention." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
