Ceri speaks with polymath Louise Gray, whose creative career spans textiles, fashion, costume, sound, and writing. Louise shares her experiences in fashion, textile design, and education, discussing her bold aesthetic choices, fearless approach to creativity, and commitment to authenticity. Her journey from establishing her own fashion label to teaching at Central Saint Martins, and currently venturing into new creative areas, provides insightful guidance for anyone on their own artistic journey. This discussion explores sustainability, the significance of creative freedom, and the necessity of staying authentic to your own values. KEY TAKEAWAYS Having grown up in rural Scotland, Louise learned to see extreme colours in nature, which later influenced her distinctive colour palette in fashion, combining contrasting hues that both clash and complement She deliberately kept her fashion label small and focused on high-quality, handcrafted pieces rather than bending to industry pressure to make more commercial products or use digital printing Louise views collaboration as essential for creative growth, seeking out artists and creators who challenge her while still maintaining her unique vision and voice Rather than trying to please everyone, Louise focused on creating work that excited her personally, knowing that authenticity would attract the right audience who truly connected with her aesthetic When teaching at Central Saint Martins, Louise rewrote the MA Fashion curriculum to emphasise sustainability and encouraged students to deeply question their identity and values as designers After closing her fashion label, Louise took delivery jobs to fund her creative work, choosing financial freedom over prestige to make art on her own terms She approaches textiles as a feminist practice, seeing it as a way to amplify historically overlooked women's work while pushing boundaries of what textile art can be Louise has learned to separate her sense of self-worth from her creative work, leading to more artistic freedom and joy in the making process BEST MOMENTS "I'm not trying to be you, I'm trying to be me. I'm interested in creating something that I know will talk to other people, because it's interesting." "I've had to really detach my sense of value from my work because I thought that they were the same thing, and since I've detached them, there's so much more lightness to the work that I do." "Joy is about connecting with other people, like true joy is always about other people.” "I'm so grateful that I have chosen a creative path. It is not easy. I didn't need it to be easy. I haven't learned from easy." "I liked making things which had multiple technique fabrics. I wasn't trying to make it accessible to people, I was trying to make the most beautiful things that I could dream of." "Sometimes just saying this is who I am and this is how I want to do it is good." "If you can make work that makes somebody feel something, you've won." The author of The Ethical Carnivore, Louise Gray takes a journalistic approach to questioning trusims about fruit and veg being better for you and the planet.Mike Berners-Lee wrote about the carbon footprint of 100 things in 2010's How Bad Are Bananas. As many businesses attempt to go carbon neutral, ethical and environmental sourcing is more of an issue than ever.In her book, Louise interviews banana, potato and avocado experts, adds some history and scientific references plus some personal worries related to her own baby in an attempt to bring clarity to the dilemma many consumers face when choosing what to eat.Louise discusses the use of avocados, beloved of millenials and vegetarians, and long used by anti-vegetarian campaigners as a stick to tell them they are being bad for the planet. She talks about how much less carbon is produced importing avocados from abroad compared to producing beef in Britain. Avocados are a lot less bad than meat and airfreighted asparagus, but are worse than UK-grown potatoes, she says. For apples, English Apples and Pears' Ali Capper is the interviewee and Louise discusses how the loss of apple biodiversity is a cause for anxiety. She concludes that the perfect diet does not exist and that food stories (the growing and selling of plants) are 'complex'. If you think not enough is happening in the FASD world, or wonder what exactly is happening, then you will want to tune into today's podcast. The FASD Success Show is all about highlighting success stories and today we go to the top of the leading FASD organization in the world – NOFASD Australia. I think it is so important that we take time to see the bigger picture, because sometimes when we are focused on our own reality, it is easy to think nothing is changing. Maybe it isn't fast enough, but things are changing. I believe this episode is the inspiration some will need right now. In this episode, I talk to Louise Gray, the Executive Officer of NOFASD Australia. She is an experienced leader in the not-for-profit field. She holds a Master of Sociology degree from Murdoch University awarded for a research project centred on community knowledge and awareness of alcohol in pregnancy and has travelled to Canada to observe approaches to therapeutic prison environments, FASD awareness and education, and employment programs. She has been the EO for the last seven years, however, has been part of the FASD community for much longer. “Too often FASD globally suffers from ‘Let's do an FASD alcohol and awareness project, and let's solve the problem in 10 months and let's solve the problem short term.' Short-termism is deadly for FASD'.” Louise and I talk about what led to her involvement with NOFASD and how Australia came to surpass Canada as the global leader in FASD awareness and support. Including: The similarities and differences between Canada and Australia, the turning point that triggered change at their government level and the need to break down silos in the FASD world. What NOFASD Australia is and is not, the programs and services they offer, partnerships they've created or nurtured and the role of the EO. Observations about facial features, the global alcohol industry, and an interesting take and comparison about awareness of COVID and FASD. “The term FASD describes a very specific disability that has a very broad range of symptoms that cause a lot of impact on individual's lives.”  We also talk about Louise's thoughts on the global awareness campaign: Red Shoes Rock and why she feels that it is an excellent tool for awareness. And if you stay with us until the end, I ask and Louise answers: “Wouldn't it be nice if…” I think as caregivers you will be interested in her first response. So have a listen. Let me know what you think and if you are inspired by what NOFASD Australia has achieved and some of the ideas presented.  Show Notes:  Website: NOFASD Australia - National Organisation for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Podcast: Pregnancy and Alcohol: The Surprising Reality: What is FASD? - NOFASD Australia  A five-part podcast series.Report: The hidden harm: Alcohol's impact on children and families | FARE Support the show

We have a truly brilliant conversation (hence this episode being so long) about the ethics of eating, outing our disordered eating, working through it and finding both stress but also great joy in eating. Ooo and she cooked me a wild Scottish rabbit. Mind and mouth: blown. Honourable MentionsHERE is the brilliant Observer article about being a food writer and bulimic which first made me aware of Louise.BUY LOUISE’S BOOK HERE - THE ETHICAL CARNIVORE - packed with information and inspiration whilst being unputdownable to boot. "Poverty rather than wealth gives the good things of life their true significance. Home-made bread rubbed with garlic and sprinkled with olive oil, shared - with a flask of wine - between working people, can be more convivial than any feast." So writes Patience Gray in the introduction to her 1986 award winning book 'Honey From A Weed: Fasting & Feasting in Tuscany, Catalonia, The Cyclades and Apulia'. To some, Patience's name evokes a masterpiece, one of the most evocative and imaginative food books written in modern times. To others, her name will mean very little; Patience Gray, by her own admission, kept a low profile, living and writing for most of her working life among rural people in Italy, Greece and Catalonia. Patience, who died in 2005, would have been 100 in 2017. So Sheila Dillon looks back on Patience Gray's life through food with the help of Adam Federman, author of a new biography 'Fasting and Feasting: The Life of Visionary Food Writer Patience Gray' and food writers Jojo Tulloh and Louise Gray. They hear from the Food Programme archives. From two visits to Patience's home in Puglia recorded by Derek Cooper and Simon Parkes. Presented by Sheila Dillon Produced in Bristol by Clare Salisbury.

Discussing the ethics of food production, we have Louise Gray on the podcast this week. Author of The Ethical Carnivore and a newspaper columnist, she embarked upon her own journey of discovery, delving into the source our meat consumption, vowing to only eat meat she had killed or sourced herself. It makes for interesting and thought provoking listening, and will make you question your own decisions when it comes to how you source food. This is certainly a show for everyone who consumes food…so everyone. As always we have a new competition running, this week to win a Hornady beer mug and ballistics bands. For more info see our website or social media feeds, or of course listen in.   www.thepacebrothers.com Email podcast@paceproductionsuk.com   This podcast is supported by the Scottish Association for Countrysports.

http://www.tropicalmba.com/hiremymom/ Dan and Ian know that all entrepreneurs struggle with hiring, and specifically hiring remote workers. One thing that they have learned over the years, through listeners of this podcast and members of the Dynamite Circle, is that stay-at-home moms tend to make model team members. On this week's episode, you'll hear the stories of three women. Kiri Masters is the founder of Bobsled Marketing. She shares some of her experiences finding great team members, and why that strategy revolves around stay-at-home parents. Louise Gray is one one of Kiri's remote employees. She had a very successful corporate career at Sony, before having a baby and reconsidering how she approaches work. Lesley Pyle is the founder of HireMyMom, a well-established agency that places stay-at-home parents at companies around the world.

Is it only ethical to eat meat you kill yourself? We interview author and journalist Louise Gray, who spent a year doing just that. We find out what it's really like inside an abattoir, how likely you are to be a psychopath if you work there, and whether the thrill of the hunt is a real thing.  And we ask: should everyone be prepared to kill animals if they want to eat meat? Louise's book, 'The Ethical Carnivore', is out now. Sustainababble is your weekly comedy podcast about politics, prattle and the planet. Music by Dicky Moore from Bearcraft and Dream Themes.
