"I've found that the books that have resonated with me the most are books where your body is incidental, but it's still something that you can never leave behind.” - Julie MurphyJulie Murphy has an unexpected story, one that involves a winding road to her writing career. With equal parts quick wit and matter-of-factness, Julie shares that part of her confidence that she could dare to be a writer came after falling deep into the Twilight series. If Stephanie Meyer, an untrained author, could write an international bestseller about shiny vampires, why couldn't she write a bestseller too? Okay, possibly not that easy, and of course Julie's journey to self-assurance and self-love, both for her writing and herself, has been far from just getting caught up in Team Edward vs Team Jacob. Navigating the tumult of unstable finances, queerness within Christian religious environments, and body image issues, Julie's coming-of-age years were full of challenges. Yet, through writing, reading, and self-reflection, she has cultivated a deep love and appreciation for her authentic self and her body. Now, she writes stories that feature characters who undertake similar journeys of self-discovery and who live in and love their bodies.Julie Murphy is beloved by kids and adults alike. Her acclaimed novel "Dumplin'" was adapted into a popular Netflix film. Along with the “Dumplin'” series, Julie has written the middle grade “Camp Sylvania” series, the "Faith Herbert Origin Story" series and was widely celebrated for her 2014 debut novel, "Side Effects May Vary." In all of her stories, Julie features plus-sized characters whose bodies are incidental to the story, but that inclusion is central to Julie's own story and to the die-hard fans of her books (raises hand!). In this episode, Julie tells us about the double-edged sword of her self-deprecating humor and how she feels about the response she gets not just from her young readers, but especially from their moms. She also discusses the evolution of body politics. She shares the college class that bored her into oblivion, leading her to discover the Twilight series and sparking the chain reaction that landed her in the literary world. ***Connect with Jordan and The Reading Culture @thereadingculturepod and subscribe to our newsletter at thereadingculturepod.com/newsletter. ***While Julie's own love story is rom-com worthy (she'll share in the episode!), for her reading challenge, “Love Hurts”, she wants us to read love stories that also… well…. hurt.***This episode's Beanstack Featured Librarian is Lauren Mobley, a middle school librarian in Atlanta, Georgia. On our latest weekly roundup, Terri's making a Lenten sacrifice and exploring its technicalities. She may need to be more specific next year. What we're watching: We continued with season 2 of Reservation Dogs with episodes 3 and 4: "Roofing" and "Mabel." Both had their share of humor as well as a hearty helping of melancholy and heartbreak, as Elora lost her grandmother but connected with their community.Catherine's library find this week is actually her book club find that could become a library find for someone else. It's called Raft of Stars, by Andrew J. Graff, and it takes place in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. Mentioned: Terri's current audiobook listen, From Cradle to Stage: Stories from Mothers Who Rocked and Raised Rock Stars by Virginia Hanlon Grohl (mother of Dave Grohl, whose own book was a past Terri rec).In the archives, we revisit episodes in which we discussed parenting-related job titles (March 1, 2021); bedtime quandaries (February 26, 2020); and our priorities as parents (March 1, 2017). Mentioned: Dog probiotics, Jamie Lee Curtis's viral plea for afternoon concerts, and VEEPS as another old-person option: Stream concerts from home instead!Next week, we'll watch the next two episodes of Reservation Dogs, season 2: E5 “Wide Net" and E6 “Decolonativization.” Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.

This is the month of giving and every year in December I like to focus on ways we can give to others in our life that do not necessarily involve material gifts. One of the ways I do this is by including discussions and interviews with people who are involved in the nonprofit world. So in that vein I am honored to introduce Nadine Templer, the Senior Director of Volunteer Programs for the non-profit, HOPE Worldwide. This organization has been around since the 1990s. It has been serving people since the AIDs epidemic in South Africa. They are an international organization that serves many people all over the world. Nadine lives in Nepal and works specifically to impact the people of Nepal. For the last 30 years HOPE worldwide has run a sustainable educational program for the poor and under-served children of Nepal. The school teaches the children that are the poorest of the poor. Many of these children come from families that have migrated from the Himalayas and the villages of Nepal. Many of these families come to Kathmandu in search of work and their children do not go to school. Those are the children that are enrolled in the school. It is an elementary school that goes from preschool to the 5th grade. The classes are small and the children are fed 2 meals a day. Nadine shared that the children are very energetic and eager to learn. Over half of the staff are graduates of the school and the perfect fit for this school as they understand the background and the life these children are living. Many of the kids are provided with scholarships so they can continue their education and most importantly HOPE worldwide follows through with this kids until they get to University and get a job. Nadine had this to say, “We are very proud of the sustainable practice we have created. We do that by engaging with the child until they are in a career. We like to live by the saying, From Cradle to Career." I shared with Nadine how this practice for me comes down to how “one person” can lift up others – all it takes is one person to begin the change and make a difference. Anyone who wishes to give to this program specifically can do so through the HOPE worldwide website and they can give directly to the Nepal program by specifying that when they donate. It's all about learning how your gift can help others and volunteering is also another way to find joy. And the lessons we can learn from the many communities around the world are endless. Linda Cundy is an Attachment-based psychoanalytic psychotherapist and supervisor with a private practice and over 35 years' experience. Linda is a Consultant at the Bowlby Centre in London that specializes in training psychotherapists in attachment-based psychoanalytic therapy. Linda has also written and edited several books including: Love in the Age of the Internet: Attachment in the digital EraAnxiously Attached (about Preoccupied attachment)Attachment and the Defence Against Intimacy (about ‘Avoidant' / Dismissing attachment)From Cradle to Kitchen: Attachment, Relationships and FoodI have asked her to come onto the Finding Psychotherapy podcast today to talk to us about attachment theory, psychoanalytic psychotherapy and how the two join together to form this unique and specialized working model. In recent years I have noticed how attachment theory has gained a lot of popularity, it is a theory that seems to resonate with so many of us. My feeling is that attachment theory has become popular because it helps us all to get an understanding of how our past relationships influence those in our present and it makes sense. However, as it is often the case when theoretical models are made popular, they can be over simplified and misunderstood. My hope is that through this conversation, attachment theory can be explained in a way that is simple but not simplistic, giving it the credit due. https://www.lindacundypsychotherapy.co.uk/Follow Finding Psychotherapy on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/finding_psychotherapySign up for updates, blog articles and resources on https://www.findingpsychotherapy.comSupport the show

THE FINALE IS HERE. And it's AD-FREE! That's right, Part 5 and the conclusion of The Marybeth Tinning Saga. The episode is a bit longer than usual, but Kendra was ready to be DONE thinking about this real piece of work that only excelled at one thing in life: popping out kids, but that's about it. The ending includes the death of their adopted son, Michael. The shocking (or not so shocking) impregnation of Marybeth with her 8th bio baby, Tami Lynne and the surprising (again, not so surprising) subsequent passing of Tami Lynne. However, this last death was finally the breaking point and Marybeth is arrested, convicted, and sentenced to prison. And Kendra is excited to move on to a different case next week!! *TRIGGER WARNING: This episode includes the deaths of children* Kendra continues with Part Two of (???) covering the case of Marybeth Tinning who had 9 children, between the ages of 11 days and 4 1/2 years old, that all died over the course of 14 years. Part Two will discuss the deaths of her first three children, starting with her third born, Jennifer, who was born with hemorrhagic meningitis and abscesses in her brain. She died never leaving the hospital. Within 2 ½ months following her death, her older siblings Joey, aged 2, and Barbara, aged 4 1/2, both suddenly also died. We're back with Milton Friedman's Free to Choose tv series… moving forward with Episode 3: Anatomy of Crisis and Episode 4: From Cradle to Grave. Here we dissect The Great Depression… Milton makes the bold and controversial claim that The Great Depression being caused by the failure of the free market IS A MYTH. Allow me to summarize his argument and reasoning for debunking this myth… we then naturally transition into how The Great Depression led to politicians, such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, pushing for more government spending and interventions to prevent NEW GREAT DEPRESSIONS! A popular and well-known government program we dig into is the Welfare System. Sure enough… those who echo it's need for existence, conveniently oversee the fact that it actually does more harm than good. We will go over specific examples where Milton visits housing projects in The Bronx, NY and Manchester, England… it is quite eye opening on how these welfare housing projects look terrifyingly identical… same system… same symptoms… same victims… coincidence? You be the judge. Enjoy. Or not. Join us through a ranty session discussion about why it costs more to be a women . From cradle to cane shiz just costs more, what can we do to change it? The pink tax refers to the broad tendency for products marketed specifically toward women to be more expensive than those marketed for men, despite either gender's choice. Congressional Democrats are working on a $3.5 trillion bill that would vastly expand the social safety net. But what exactly is this thing we call the social safety net? “We’re talking about things like the earned income tax credit, child tax credits, a cash transfer program called TANF, or Temporary Assistance [for] Needy Families … but if you think about how long it might take you to get on your feet, it is a relatively meager and challenging system to subsist on,” said Tina Sacks, associate professor of social welfare at the University of California, Berkeley. The idea that the government should help catch Americans if they fall on hard times started during the Great Depression, for obvious reasons. But Sacks says today that net doesn’t work as well as it should. There are a lot of gaps in the system, and at the end of the day our programs are pretty meager compared to those in other developed nations. On the show today, Sacks walks us through the ins and outs of the social safety net. What it looks like in practice and whether the Democrats’ plan could make a real difference. The welfare state arises from the attempt to do good with other people’s money. Such attempts always fail because nobody spends someone else’s money as carefully as their own. Those spending the money use force to collect it and to ensure those receiving it use it for the ”right” purposes. Good intentions are corrupted by bad means. In today’s podcast, “From Cradle to Grave,” Friedman visits the U.S. and Britain to explore these topics. A four time death race finisher, and two time race director Robin will partner with Peter Borden to direct the 2020Death Race. Robin is matter of fact about his endurance background, but between you and me, it includes things like barefoot trail ultras. This episode includes many of the Death Race’s most legendary stories. What do $50 of Pennies, an Onion King at the top of the mountain, and a Greek textbook have in common? The 2010 Death Race. What about 1,000 sets of stone lifts, Slosh pipes, and a Broken foot? Those all happened in Robin’s 2011 Death Race. Betrayal, carrying kayaks over Bloodroot, and hours of rolling? Those are all part of Robin’s 2012 Death Race. From Cradle to Grave, Death Race In everyday Life from a four time finisher. See photos of Robin in action http://peakraces.com/death-race-podcast/ Lessons: Age is just a number Challenge your children by example Working your body and mind, for a balance in life. Finding the Death race ( be inquisitive). The themes embedded within the Death race have life long meanings. As in life these themes are part of the challenge. Think past the obvious, sometimes what you hear or see is only a part of the story. Challenge yourself to be your best, when you are at your worst. Don't fail to recognize your failures as potential success. There are times, when what is left unsaid, can be as important as what has been said. Achievements are meant to be celebrated, and learned from. This week Shelley and Christian review 'From Cradle to Stage: Stories from the Mothers Who Rocked and Raised Rock Stars' by Virginia Hanlon Grohl with forward by Dave Grohl. Published by Seal Press, April 2017. Written by Dave Grohl’s mom (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) to answer her own questions about the experiences of other mothers who had raised rock stars, and based on interviews with women who had done just that. She was curious about whether they were as surprised as she was about their children's fame; whether they worried about their children's well-being in an industry fraught with drugs and other dangers; whether or not they had actively encouraged their children's passions despite the odds against success; and whether they were raised in musical households. During her two year journey she interviewed a several moms of musicians covering a range of genres and generations, such as the moms of Dr. Dre; Amy Winehouse and Geddy Lee. With exclusive family photographs and a foreword by Dave Grohl, From Cradle to Stage will appeal to mothers and rock fans everywhere.
